I stand corrected. My aging memory once more shows itself.

This is a bit off topic, but Arthur C. Clarke is probably my favourite Sci-Fi author. Can highly recommend the rendezvous with Rama series.

Well, just look at the design of so many stations in space in E:D game, especially the interiors!

BIG double-plus to you!

Out of curiosity: Is there any source on how those Federation and Imperial ranks actually look like? I was thinking of something in the lines of epaulettes, shoulder marks and/or medals? Or maybe even some concept art decals (if those exist)?

I don't remember seeing anything visually or even described in a novel. It is something we have talked about extensively both in the Chapterhouse and in the Lore discord. I don't remember if we came up with anything definitive.

I guess it depends on whether you'd like to try to extrapolate from current/existing rank indicators, as The Feds seem to do, or 'borrow' hints/clues from other franchises (the collar pips, uniform trim, stylized medals on the left side of chest, as ST does, for instance) or work on something based on any clues according to E:D. Just possible ideas.

We've generally agreed that the Fed ranks would follow a hybrid of UK and US navel structure. Since a lot of the current world uses some variant of chevrons, they would stay for NCOs. It's the Commissioned Officers that may have the most change. The bars would stay, but the crowns (star) may change. Although, given the space-faring nature of 330X, stars would probably be the main stay (it's also used currently by the US, China, Russia, N. Korea, and Greece, maybe more).

The Empire is more complicated. Since they go toward more elegant and 'organic', we haven't come up with an agreed on insignia structure. Although Navel rank structure may still follow British/Canadian style with influences from Ancient Greece and Rome. Lavigny's Legion has a very well thought out rank structure, and that may well reflect a good Imperial rank structure.

Iirc they arent *really* ranks. Theyre more of an honorary thing

Seeing how the individual ranks got named I don't believe they are just some note in your dossier. While you can compare most of the ranks with the Feds (with exception of "Post Commander" and "Post Captain", never heard those ranks before inside any navy) to ranks inside RL militaries, it gets a bit more complicated with the Empire and its list of aristocratic titles and how to symbolize them in a way you can slap onto a Remlok suit or onto your ship as a decal...

On a different note: While grinding Empire ranks ("Hail to the King, baby!" ) I recieved a couple of mail from a "Mysterious Stranger" pointing me to several crashsites and/or other planetside locations a few hundred lightyears from my current location. Are those worth investigating?

Depends on if you like adventure and bitter disappointment.
