Elite: Lore

Synthya WylderOn the topic, the image of the Achilles-type robot appears masculine & purposely artificial.

Is there any Lore which describes their aesthetics in any other way, & if they were constructed with an otherwise feminine appearance...

& here's the feather-ruffler & wave-maker... are they ever mentioned being developed, programmed, &/ used in or with the additional capacity as a "personal assistant", specifically, in the area of/with the abilities of a 'Pleasure-Unit'?

I mean, on those long, dark, lonely voyages out in "The Black"...

Well, Frontier is a very g-rated company when it comes to all things sexual (the publication of Nemorensis notwithstanding), so while there's no specific mention of pleasurebots in the lore that I'm aware of, I would be absolutely floored if such didn't exist in 3306.

I think it's a gray area and not mentioned on purpose in order to avoid the game getting ranked over in PEGI +7 - although in some countries that ranking, I think, is +12 for Tobacco & Alcohol references ALTHOUGH I think they aren't uppering PEGI for being REFERENCES and not depicted as being used. Same goes for Slavery I guess.

There's a reason why space strategies are (usually) getting lower rank PEGI due to virtually no violence shown. Homeworld had PEGI 7 despite obvious genocide shown quite early in the game but it wasn't graphic.

In defense of the 'Sappho concept', IMO it's easy to portray any such possible erotic activity in a non-specific & non-graphic manner, & leave it to the reader to fill in the details/blanks for themselves, for which they alone are responsible.

I've no intention of writing anything that would be unsuitable for minors & will continue to fully respect & maintain the integrity of the Inara site.

I posted the query in order that I may know the boundaries & respect the E:D Lore when considering different avenues & storylines for writing RP in Inara.

I appreciate all the responses in all the different aspects of E:D Lore here.

I don't think that many minors frequent this page... and besides, I've written some semi-explicit material on my Kyndi alt with nary a single clutched chest.

I find it amusing how FDev go out of their way to keep Imperial slavery in the family-friendly zone.

As a fan of Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, Ex Machina and similar movies, I like your concept a lot.

Galactic proctologist required. Apply within. And before you go any further, there a no Klingons in the ED universe.

It's a difference between a mere information and suggestion rather than actual presentation AND the fact you can be punished for that. That's why there's a difference between a strategy game and shooter (with certain exceptions depending on how graphical strategy presents that stuff) their ratings are different: a typical strategy usually gets no more than +7 while most of the shooters almost immediately get +16/+18 mark. The fact that you can eradicate, enslave or even put species into being nothing more but a cattle food for "superior races" doesn't put Stellaris as +18 game, because it is not shown - but provided as an information.

For the reference, Stellaris is a game with +7 age restriction, like Elite: Dangerous.

Oh and remember that If you weren't punished for heinous acts (i.e. terrorism, smuggling, piracy, slavery), all the ratings would skyrocket - in case of GTA games, which already have +18 since GTA 3, if there wasn't any punitive mechanism, that game would receive the highest restriction mark: Adult Only (and basically make it unsellable in a lot of countries).

While ED doesn't show what it looks like to jettison a cargo load of Imperial slaves into deep space, it doesn't punish players for doing so either. At the same time the lore tells us that Imperials go into slavery voluntarily if they have debt to pay off, and that the Empire has laws to protect slaves from abuse. Oh, but there's an abolitionist movement within the Empire anyway, to free all those volunteer slaves from their chosen condition. The game makes sense but the lore doesn't.

The Lore makes sense in that way... well aside from not being punished in Imperial territory for jettisoning Imperial Slaves.

Yes, Imperial people voluntarily go into indentured servitude to pay debts so they themselves are not destitute. The people behind the abolitionist movement use it for popularity and political gain, using a mix of misinformation and real-life abuse (in game/lore that is) examples to get people to join the cause. Given what we see in current real life, such campaigns can be very successful even though they don't make perfect sense.

From Galnet (emphasis mine):
Under Imperial law, citizens are not permitted to sell their Imperial Slaves for service to non-Imperial citizens, nor are they allowed to sell Imperial Slaves on worlds outside of Imperial space. Those found breaking the law run the risk of being forced into service themselves

Forced into voluntary slavery!

You've got my vote guys. Don't hold anything back! I'm a bad influence.

Perhaps it's dancing along a semantic line, but my impression on the difference between 'slavery' & 'indentured servitude' was that the former was involuntary whereas the latter was not.

IMO, what the Empire practices would be more accurately described as something akin to the latter. The former is shorter & easier to spell though.

Of course, no empire would put themselves in a bad light by applying the term "slavery" to indentured servitude. More likely they would do the opposite and use the term "indentured servitude" to sugarcoat actual slavery.

It really is the weakest part of Elite lore IMHO.

^^
Considering the Imperial culture of tiered levels of social status, I would think slavery would be the term; placing them just below the level of peons, drones, or whatever they call the lower tier of working-class citizens. And I doubt all the sales are voluntary. Some may volunteer to work off debt, it would also work nicely to put those who would defy the upper stratum in their place.
