Elite: Lore

Yeah, I agree Synthia...

That's why I wanted to respond to the facts about religion within ED and not my personal opinions on religion.

In my own RP I've mentioned JB, and some of the other smugglers, having a Saint Malverde bobblehead on their dashboard. Not exactly a religion but still a sort of belief that someone's looking over them.

As long as humans aren't immortal, they'll make up religions to help them cope with that reality.

MeowersMany years ago, when humankind was making it's first tiny and cautious steps into outer black, a first human who went into space, Yuri Gagarin, said: "I see no God up here". Perhaps we still haven't found one, even living on countless worlds and crossing the Galaxy.

That quotation is actually a hoax. Yuri Gagarin never said that and such words never appeared on the original recordings with ground control. If anything, the quotation was likely added by Soviets as part of their propaganda, as the USSR had anti-religiousness at the core of their ideology.

Pretty much maybe. And maybe it's now deemed as a hoax, because at this day Church have great influence on what's now on ex-USSR territories.

And this is where I cut the discussion, because it neither has any to do with ED lore nor that you ignored the fact I pointed out original Soviet ground control recordings with Gagarin.

Not to mention neither this section nor entirety of INARA forums is for criticizing religious organizations or other people's faith. You have other sites for that, so please do that on INARA.

Recordings could be edited one way or another, but yeah, I guess it isn't the best topic for discussion.

I honestly think the disconnect isn't that Frontier has established ED as an anti-religious setting. Because from a technical perspective religion is very present. But as with many things in ED it lacks detail, in their effort to encourage you to fill them in yourself. ED was absolutely built on the concept of building your own story, hence the massive fan fiction and role play community around the game. But because of that, if you're looking for details like christianity, islam, buddhism or scientology you won't find them as you are intended to fill in those sorts of things yourself. You're meant to find or make a religious organization and fill in those details yourself. Make your own prayer circle or meditation group and it is fully supported both in-game and by the community

It's absolutely for the best that Frontier is sidestepping the mention of specific, real-life religions in its game.

Agree with this. It's a minefield.

Religions were present for the last 10,000 years and they are part of social construct to put it in the most simple ways. They are very unlikely to be gone and will be still present, albeit in different forms we see them now - they may even go into more broad definition (i.e. Asimov's Foundation series). Being religious does not mean being evil and in the end it all boils down to the people themselves, as what has never changed - even in terms of ED that is fictional future to us - the old Roman maxim "divide and conquer" is still present despite the time or ideology represented.

When you think about it, all the arguments about Federation, Empire or Alliance - or staying independent - have some mark of "religious" zealotry that "our stuff is the best", while ignoring all the bad present in respective powers or totally missing the good points of the other superpowers because they aren't your superpower.

All this Religion is reminding me that it's around this time of year I like to advise Commanders to take a trip out to 47 Ceti and pick up a pair of the two Rare goods on offer there.

47 Ceti is one of the only places with two Rare goods on offer.

It might not be obvious at first glance but when you think about they are an Overt (or should that be oeuf-vert?) reference to the ancient movable feast that happens to be today.

Like a lot of the themes in our galaxy these reference things which are central to the Human Condition. There are many others, the people of the Golconda produce another product you might find of interest.

George Pantazis is a conman though so don't buy any of that trash he is peddling.

I like very much the setting of BattleTech, taking place in year 3050 approximately, and who is a multi-cultural and multi-religion setting because cultures and religions are like languages: they take part of the people's cultural identity. I don't see any reason from religions to disappear, no the different languages as secondary languages. Except if the E:D setting is specifically says the opposite ^^

That is actually a very interesting concept, especially we are never told how different planets look like. My impression is that language itself will be different in every single star system, even if it was similar. Take into consideration that even today two people who are considered English speakers might not understand each other due to different influences in the regions they are from. Not to mention generational lingual gaps within just one country. Or the countries which have over dozen regional words for something as simple as potato, despite everyone speaking the same language.

Battletech was interesting in that it at least tried to account for the way that language would evolve if one group of humanity was separated from another for a long period of time (i.e., the clans' use of "aff", "neg", and "battle language", which is a hyper-efficient linguistic shorthand to convey maximum information in minimal time). Fifteen-year-old me was quite impressed.

Elite is an extremely conservative sci-fi universe by any measure, in that language seems not to have evolved at all and that humanity has retained most of its present-day aesthetics, customs, and conventions (which makes sense given that that the lore functions to enrich the game, and not the game to enrich the lore such as in Jurassic Park). It's tempting to speculate that religion would have also stayed as stagnant, but again: the lore is totally mum about its specifics.

And obviously the Clans (except Jade Falcon) are superior to the Inner Sphere.
