Elite: Lore

I responded to:

Isaiah EvansonOf course. Not everyone is cut out for large scale fleet battles and years-long wars between corps.

I know I'm not. I don't have that kind of time. But I see the appeal and wish Elite allowed for the same scale conflicts.

The peer-to-peer servers can't handle large-scale conflict in Elite the video game, no. And even if they could it would be a chaotic mess for all but the most focused players.

Lorewise they would absolutely exist.

Your point?

Having been in some large PvP fights in the past, it was a mess.

The biggest one was the Salome event as part of her wing. Fun stuff right up until instancing got her killed.

SapphoI guess the question to ask then, is something like that in the E:D lore?

Are you seriously asking whether large scale conflict is in the E:D lore?

It's a legitimate question.

Yeah, large scale battles happened in the past, for example like battle of Achenar (talking about the lore). Even in the "present" there is no military doctrine against large conflicts, as far as I know.

My point was my question, which I asked.

M. Lehman gave an answer & so did Artie.

I recall a comment on Eve was that you didn't fly a ship so much as play a spreadsheet.

I've never played it, only examined the game prior to choosing E:D.

Which, IMO, was a much better choice, but that's me. YMMV.

If I had to describe EvE it would be a mixture of an Excel spreadsheet and Star Trek Bridge Commander as in that you only give commands to your ship and it responds to those.

Well, large scale conflict in terms of Alliance vs Empire vs Federation is one of the core themes in the E:D lore, so I was not sure whether that question was serious.

Just watching Drew Wagar on Twitch. He's analyzing the technology that Dredger ships use to suck rocks into their shredders, and concluding that it's violating the lore!

Whooops

On a more serious note: What exactly did he critizise? Because on first look it seems to be a rather basic piece of tech: "eat" something, let crushers smash it in teeny-tiny pieces, use those.

There is some sort of force field sucking things into the shredder, including your ship if you get too close. It appears to be artificial gravity, which of course shouldn't exist in Elite.

Hmm... I thought it was something similar to a magnetic field, like you'd see on a railgun. This would have the limitation though that something magnetic needs to be inside what's getting sucked in.

strong magnets would make sense and it has that weird mouth part that is weirdly electrical so they could have many ways to do it.

why do pirates fly in imperial ships and how do they get them. also you never see them flying federal ships. like never the cutter or corvette. but you see them in couriers and clippers.

One man's pirate is another man's privateer. Letters of marque and other connections probably exist and made it possible for them to acquire those vessels.

Or maybe they took them as a prize.
