Great discussions overall with lore and all. Really though, and this question maybe misplaced, but Imperial patronage aside, can Space Feudalism be trusted to be a good, realistic form of interstellar government? a second question based on opinion, how do you think of how the Empire was written in Elite Dangerous? do you think that Braben and Fdev really did research about these ancient cultures and how they could be applied in this interstellar setting, or was it just a matter of copy and pasting the Roman Empire just because it was cool?

I think the idea is that all superpowers are most likely indirect in control of their systems, as long as the taxes are paid to their and no one else's treasuries. With Empire, it is rather simple as back in Ancient Rome the respective governors (I forgot the actual term, blame late hours over here) had a lot of autonomy in which direction their province should go, mostly given that direct command from the capital city would take weeks to arrive given the vastness of Roman Empire in its top periods.

I imagine the vastness might be also a factor in case of Empire, which may rely on army of competent individuals who are given a free hand (within certain limitations) how to develop their own systems.

The answer to that is the same as it is for medieval and modern feudalism - it's certainly realistic, but trusted and good?
Of course not - it's designed to benefit the top of the hierarchy.

From my understanding, it was Michael Brookes who fleshed out the workings of the Empire for Elite Dangerous, based on the snippets in the Frontier Gazetteer handbook by David Massey. It's partly based on the Roman Empire, but as always it's a nod to it, not a direct analogy by any means.

XeknosI still haven't seen a credible source as to how Fed stations look more "run down" than Imperial ones. If anything, you're seeing a difference in aesthetics - Federal stations and ships tend to have a more industrial feel, while Imperial stations and ships feel more... handcrafted? Though that doesn't speak much to the difference in quality, if any.

I'd also need to see some evidence to back up the "Imp ships outclass Fed ships" argument.
