Born in space, Rhys is the last son within a gang of pirates operating under the umbrella of the Crimson Fleet. Growing up, his criminal parents and older siblings made sure that he learned all the tools of the trade. By the time he reached adulthood, Rhys was talented enough to stay behind and pilot the family's ship while the rest of the crew boarded fat merchant vessels in search of easy loot.

One such raid changed everything. Hidden mercenaries aboard a seemingly ordinary hauler ambushed and killed his family. Rhys barely managed to jump to safety after taking heavy fire from the hauler's suddenly active turrets. After learning that bounty hunters were still looking for him, Rhys sold the damaged ship to acquire a new identity on the black market. He found employment as an ordinary miner as he laid low and bided his time, trying to figure out his next move.
