Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I wonder if this counts as torture or fun," I quipped, a smirk starting to dance on my lips as I alluded to her interrogation techniques.

"Either way, I'm itching to find out if we'll… squeeze… anything useful out of her." By now I was grinning from one ear to the other.

I gave an encouraging nod in her direction, then, with a swift motion, I jabbed the button for internal comms.

"Hey, can someone snag me that suit computer? I want to try my luck with it."
06 May 2024, 8:10am
“It will only be torture if there is no other way… except, maybe, mentally… annoying.”

I felt like shrugging a little, but instead just… got off the console, which had been covered by my rear half for a little too long.

“I will just go now. And you… have fun.”

And so I did, walking out in the direction of the cell block… not quite quickly, whatever the word still meant in my case, but also not too slowly. In any case, getting to watch those hips of mine moving was probably quite something of a sight, to anyone that beheld it.
06 May 2024, 11:39am
I wasn't quite sure if 'having fun' and fiddling with a suit's computer were entirely compatible concepts, so I responded to the remark with a nonchalant shrug.

"Have fun yourself..." I retorted, with a sly grin. "And above all, good luck!"

Then I watched her as she strutted out of the room. That walk was indeed a sight to behold, but also one I hadn't quite gotten used to. For the umpteenth time, I wondered about the practical problems that came with such a figure. The need for a special pilot's seat was surely just one of them.

Which reminded me, we still needed to make that adjustment for our upcoming jaunt to the Musashi. I flicked on the comms and barked out instructions to the engineering crew aboard my carrier to prep a ship accordingly.
06 May 2024, 12:10pm
As I was walking toward the cell, trying to be as mindful to personal space of the various crew members as possible, with my oversized self, I began to think about what the crew of the other carrier had to think at getting a… ‘special’ seat made, when their captain was definitely not one to need it. And then it occurred to me, I’d have to walk a certain distance through it in order to reach the ship we’d be taking… which would be a whole other lot of fun. And staring from people. Because I enjoyed it so much.

Arriving at the cell block of the capital ship pulled me out of my thoughts. Other than occasional post-work drunkenness, it was never used, except for today. The guards outside let me in without question, and I found my Azimuth ‘guest’ brooding in her cell, wearing regular civilian clothing.

“Come to gloat?”, was thrown at me, before I even had a chance to say anything.

“Yes… and no.”, I replied, crossing my arms, placing the feet slightly further apart, which didn’t really do much to move the thighs away from one another. “I want to know what you know.”

“What I know? Shit-all. I’m just the idiot they sent out to get someone’s fat breasts in the face.”

I tilted my head to the right. “Insulting me, will not work.”

“Oh, well, won’t it? You can barely even form sentences without stopping, but apparently your brain worked enough to make you get breasts the size of your goddamn head, and an ass fat enough to fit it on three people.”

“And I also beat you with that big size.”

“Give me another few days and I’ll maybe have figured out how you’re not an immobile slug, with thighs twice as wide as the rest of your legs. Or more.”

“I practiced.” I had nothing else to reply to that. “And you are not going anywhere until you tell me the things I want to hear.”

“Then we’ll both be stuck here for a while longer.”

I sighed.

“You are not being helpful.”

I maybe would need to change my approach. The woman definitely didn’t recognize me right off the bat, but perhaps revealing who I was would get her to talk.
06 May 2024, 4:44pm
The moment I got my hands on that suit computer, I dove straight into the thick of it, living by the old creed: the sooner you start, the sooner you’re done. But, oh boy, was I in for a surprise.

Turns out, “being done” is a pretty loose term in terms of actual time needed. That gizmo was a beast of complexity, way more intricate than I’d bargained for. Azimuth seemingly had their mitts on the shiniest tech you could dream of, as already confirmed by the slick drones they had buzzing around the outpost I’d slipped into. Now, I’m no fool - I knew they weren’t cooking up all this fancy gear on their own, even if arms dealing was their bread and butter, but that top notch gear still surprised me.

So there I was, elbows deep in the guts of this tiny marvel, and found it’s packed with all sorts of gizmos for keeping tabs on the wearer’s vitals. Probably the reason why that captured soldier managed to cling to life after getting roughed up, no doc in sight, as reported by Kasumi. But wait, it got juicier - this thing could also transfer position and health data to some shadowy third party. Couldn’t tell if it had spilled the beans, but I snapped a pic of its innards and shot it over to Kasumi with a few notes of explanation.

Might come in handy for her to shatter the prisoners hopes for rescue... though I was hoping she already made headway on her end by now, not needing any of this.

"I wouldn't be expecting you to be helpful either, if our roles were swapped."

Annoying and smug, too, on top of unhelpful. I chose to pose a question, short and simple.

"Do you know who I am?"

"No.", the woman replied. "Should I?"

My answer to that was to present my right arm - the wrist, specifically. That seemed to make something click.

"But - that's a - " What could best be described as panic bloomed on her face. "You?! Shit, why haven't they even tried to send someone after me?"

"I can hear you.", I nonchalantly stated. "And I will not hurt or kill you, unless you give me a reason to. Again."

She sighed, rather deeply, perhaps realizing that she was definitely in it now. "Fine. Not like I can do anything but rot in this cell. But I need to ask a question first."

I put on an annoyed expression. "What?"

"How the fuck did you end up fattened like this? It's like someone tried to get you obese for a few months, and all it did was go to your breasts and ass."

I ignored the clearly mocking undertone, not letting it get to me. "That is not important. But as you do not seem to have understood, you will only leave in one piece if you talk. What were you doing down there?"

"What does it look like?" The. frustration in her tone was hard to miss. "Go down, get the data, which those incompetent pirate idiots failed to do, get out. Instead, my squad's dead, and I'm stuck with a weirdo with a body that'd fit on someone twice the size... if you had a normal body."

More dumb, ignorable insults, which only served to make me roll my eyes. I looked at the message I got with some of the info on that funny suit computer, and the picture. Deciding to keep it as a 'last measure', I looked at my prisoner again, and got ready to throw what I thought to be a - figurative - bomb, into her face.
06 May 2024, 7:08pm
I was nearly through with the suit’s computer… and my own smarts. Only the comms unit of the device itself still held some secrets. Well, at least that’s what I kept telling myself as I fiddled with it. Somehow, this whole mess had to be good for something - that’s what I hoped.

After a bit of back and forth, hitting dead ends and some confusion, both on the computer’s part and my own, I managed to coax out a few tidbits from the stubborn thing. First up, there was a call sign, and the confirmation of an ID request. That might come in handy, might be enough to answer a radio request for personal ID with an original, un-forged code. The only question was, how long would it stay an option before they started missing the soldier and wiped her from the personnel database? I was just hoping that the bureaucracy of an arms corporation wasn’t any faster than any other company of comparable size.

Then I stumbled upon something that looked like a hint to a higher rank, presumably the boss of the soldier lady. Unfortunately, at this point it seemed I’d used up all my lives in this computer game, as the machine now showed me a red circle, clearly indicating a countdown… and it was ticking down quickly. Plus, smack dab in the middle of this circle, bold and ugly, was a message reading ‘Self-destruct activated’.

That’s when I decided it was time to hack the device for good. With a move as quick as it was rash and ill-considered, I reached for the sidearm at my hip, fully aware that this tale was gonna have an ugly end, either for the device, or for me…
06 May 2024, 10:20pm
“I know about the project.”

All that got me in return was a confused stare.

“The project? What project?”

I tilted my own head, equally confused.

“You do not know about it?”

“Even if I knew about ‘the project’, you’d have to be more specific. Azimuth aren’t just doing a single thing at a time. And they’ll be sending someone after me soon. They’ve got to be.”

I shook my head and simply played back that recovered recording. By the time it ended, it was more like I looked at a ghost. Any paler, and it would’ve needed to be an artificial white like my own skin.

“This - what the fuck is this?”

“It is what Azimuth do.”, I replied, in a dry tone.

“You’d better not be making this up out of thin air.”

She was still trying to act tough, but tone was nervous. I could see the facade breaking.

“It is not, made up. I found shipping logs, that data you were supposed to recover, it was all very hidden.” Now seemed like a good time to mention I also wasn’t acting alone. Just to drive the nail in further. “And someone else found boxes of Guardian tech, and old AI relics, at your other site in this system, going to your megaship near here. What defense do you have?”

I crossed my arms, leaned back a little and began to tap with my right foot at a slow rhythm. Meanwhile, my captive was now visibly nervous. And undecided.

“But - you - I - fuck!”

“Do you need more convincing?”

It probably was not necessary, but I provided the picture of the suit computer getting its electronic guts poked, too.

“What the hell? What did they… put into my suit?”

We don’t know.”, I answered, while turning off the display. “Maybe, you should say what you were really doing here.”

“I don’t know shit, alright? I’m just some fucking grunt paid to do my job and not ask questions. I was told there was a risk of sensitive corporate material remaining on certain computer equipment, and that I should be on standby to clean it up if ‘outside contractors’ failed to do it properly. They didn’t say what that data was, but were sure as hell willing to pay a shitload of credits on top of the usual.”

“Because they wanted to hide it. And now you failed.”, I factually stated. Which prompted the woman to sigh.

“No one’s coming for me, are they?”

“They are not, no. And even if they wanted to, they could not, without exposing themselves.”

“Damn it, what a hole of shit I’ve got myself stuck in now.” She said something else under her breath, which I caught due to my particularly sensitive hearing. “Ordinary weapons manufacturer my ass …”

The woman looked up again.

“What are you going to do with me? Can’t work for those bastards now.”

“That depends. If you are willing to help, maybe you will live.”

“Even if I wanted to, I don’t see how. The only thing I had access to was some mostly low-level comms and databases of where Azimuth operated - legally. Don’t need anything else when you’re just told to stand around playing security all day. Or to run a recovery job in a pinch. And they’ve probably already purged all of that by now, anyway.”

“I expect you to try. Then I will decide what happens to you. EDI, give limited network access, no comms, to our ‘guest’.” I didn’t hide my disdain in the last word, and looked at her with a very telling gaze. “Try anything, and you will regret it.”

I decided to send a shory message to my partner in uncovering shady Azimuth business that I’d made progress with our “friend”, basically recapping what I’d just been told about her relative lack of knowledge, not even aware of what ‘Dawnbreaker’ was or that it existed.

And I continued to observe the work being done in front of me - any sneaky attempts to get a signal or message out to Azimuth would almost certainly be caught by EDI. There wasn’t much better than a fully-fledged AI to monitor a network like this - it would notice trying to hide a transmission in ‘background noise’ much easier than a human.
07 May 2024, 2:40pm
Of course, I didn't shoot at the suit computer, although the thought naturally crossed my mind in that high-stress moment.

Instead, I hammered at the device with the solidly made weapon - since there was nothing else readily at hand - until the power supply finally detached from the rest of the contraption. The countdown halted immediately as the suit computer ceased its operation due to lack of power. I’d call that a successful hack!

I tucked the weapon away and set about cleaning up the mess before me. As it turned out, the now-severed power supply had suffered some damage during the admittedly not-so-corporation-approved maneuver. I realized this the moment my fingers made contact with the thing. The subsequent discharge was quite impressive.

“Damned piece of space junk,” I cursed loudly, simultaneously jumping back and shaking my hand. I could already see - and unfortunately feel - the burns from the discharge on my fingers, prompting a few more choice expletives to race through my mind, ones no translator in the galaxy could adequately capture. But hey, at least I’d outwitted the damn suit computer and got all intel the device possessed.

And if anyone asked, I’d just say I’d given it a little “manipulation”.

"Are you just going to stand there watching all day?"

My presence clearly greatly unnerved the Azimuth soldier... to my delight, of course.

"If it annoys you, yes.", I answered.

"Whatever I did to you personally ...", she muttered. "And you're disturbing my work. If you were any fatter, I'd feel threatened in my personal space, too."

"Not fat, just 'big'. There is a difference."

"Whatever you say."

"Azimuth made it personal, when they ruined my life. People who work for them do not have an excuse. Or do you?"

"I don't." That answer came faster than expected. "When I'm done, are you just going to let me leave?"

"No. I do not need you running around telling them what we know. You will stay right here, until this is 'dealt' with."

"I figured." She sighed. "If you do find that Dawnbreaker shit, be so kind to give Hothis my greetings, would you? Damned bitch. 'Good enough' was not actually good enough for her."

"I will... consider it. But why?"

"Well, for starters, putting whatever that weird shit in the suit computer is in without telling me, even if it kept me alive. Just "experimental device" supposed to provide better in-field analysis and whatever. They did warn me to keep an eye on its performance, and what it was doing, so it probably skirts a little too close to a few laws. Hell, could swear I overheard some of the tech guys at our production base talking about some old AI relics, the kind that's outlawed to hell and beyond."

"We found one of those. But did not know what it was for, yet. And you would not know where this base is, or the name?"

"Above my paygrade. If that wasn't obvious to your half-dead brain. All I know is that I was never told where, or the name, no nav systems allowed during transit or presence, and data got purged after each visit. Should've thought they were up to some shit then, already. As for those chips... not surprised, I'll tell you. And I doubt that's the only thing they used them for."

"You seem to know me, even though you are just a soldier, or guard."

"Of course I do. I don't know whatever the fuck you did in the past to piss off management, but they really want to make damn sure everyone knows about the human-Thargoid hybrid amidst society. Maybe they're afraid of you bulldozing their public operations." The woman looked my figure over. "Though I think someone missed the memo on you making yourself fat. Or wide, whatever. It's got to be fat under there."

"Of course, it is. And yes, it is soft.", I factually replied.

"Yeah, whatever. Don't care. And if you need another reason why you should greet the bitch for me, I was just about to ask for a different post before I ran into you. That should tell you enough."

"Maybe it does. But I am already getting in their way. They do not appear to care yet."

"Only because they're not idiots enough to try fucking with you directly. Since that means Aegis'll get involved, and it's going to look a lot less pretty when they actually have a reason to be." She paused briefly. "Not that I have a particular reason to care any longer. At this point, I might as well prefer to have them be consigned to become space dust. What are the chances I wouldn't be shot on sight because of 'failure' or 'collaboration with the enemy' by an Azimuth hit squad. now?"

"Not... very high."

"Genius."

Being annoyingly sarcastic was apparently still not going to leave this woman.

"I am going to go now. You stay here. And I will decide what to do with you when I return."

"Like I have much of a choice. You're keeping me locked up until you've gone through with this anyway."

"You should also think about what you will do next. And the choices which have led you here." I turned around on my heel, as gracefully as I could manage with my body. "The system will tell me when you are done."

I began to walk to where I'd left my companion in this matter - actual companion, whose name I still wasn't used to. Somehow, I had a feeling I'd find some kind of a mess over there.
07 May 2024, 7:23pm
I stashed everything in its place, giving a sleeve a couple of swipes over the bits and bobs of the device, making them look as shiny as a newly born star. Overall, it was a pretty satisfying sight, if you ignored the fact that both the service time and any warranty on the suit's computer had expired forever. None of it was usable anymore, at least not as a whole. Might salvage a few chips, though.

I shoved my hand, where the thumb, index, and middle finger looked quite red, under the opposite armpit, pondering whether to call for a medic. Decided against it, though - the pain was already fading. The discoloration, on the other hand, seemed keen to stick around longer as an unwanted guest, I reckoned.

But hey, we got the data.
07 May 2024, 8:47pm
I casually strolled into the room, not even bothering to hide the - natural or not - swaying of my enlarged hips, partly as it was just a byproduct of my adjusted walk cycle, the equally larger breast lightly moving up and down as part of this walking too. And then I stopped, taking in the situation.

Computer looked normal, but its power supply definitely showed signs of taking a bashing, its 'inspector' was hiding one hand under an armpit, and I placed both hands on my hips as fists.

"I expected a mess, but I also wanted to be disappointed."
07 May 2024, 9:01pm
“Think your guest - if she survived the interrogation - was lucky to make it this far,” I said, flicking my free hand towards the suit’s computer.

“That blasted thing had a self-destruct mechanism. But no worries, I’ve tinkered with it. It won’t be blowing up anything anymore,” I said with a smirk, tilting my head to the side.

“Don’t look so glum now... There wasn’t much intel to scrape up anyway. Sent you the bits and bobs while you were playing bad cop with the prisoner. Besides, I snagged an authentication code that’ll let us masquerade as the captive soldier on demand."

"...So, how’d your little tête-à-tête go?”
07 May 2024, 9:17pm
"I have 'tasked' her to get us info. If she can. And think about what got her stuck in this mess. Was not so... keen, on Azimuth, after I showed your pictures and the audio thingy you recovered, earlier. We will learn soon enough if she can get us any result. But, we should still look at the megaship, for the case that it is not the truth."

I moved over to the remains of the computer, leaning over the table it was placed on, one leg placed forward slightly, both hands on said table. Which, of course, presented my backside, and the thighs as well to some extent.

"I sent you what she told me. And recognized me, except for insisting that I looked different on whatever Azimuth shared of me, without 'fattened hips and breasts'. But, the important part, I think they used the AI chip stuff for this. Maybe more. She did tell me, about overhearing 'techs' discussing with this, and that there were no details to the 'experimental technology' used in... I guess, this."

I raised a hand over the defunct device.

"And to 'watch its performance and what it was doing', apparently. Whatever is in there may not be completely legal... not that they would care." A brief glance went toward my companion. "Or you, I... guess."

I focused back on the computer again.

"Maybe analyzing the hardware components would be a good idea... if you have not. And I can also send you a recording of the full 'chat' I had. If you want it... for now, I am making her stay in the cell, until we are done with the project. I will decide what to do after that... she will have to survive Azimuth, if I let her go, anyway."
07 May 2024, 11:30pm
"Ouch," I shot back at the jab about my, let's say, 'flexible' approach to legality. "So you used to be all sleek and slim, and I had a virginal take on legality. Seems like age played us both dirty..." I retorted with a mischievous glint in my eye. I didn't hold it against her; us pirates often got a worse rap than we deserved. Slaughtering ship crews, for instance, was more a discipline of large corporations.

"Azimuth's got reach, but even they can't be everywhere. I reckon each of us has had a bounty on our heads at some point..." I pondered, glancing at Kasumi, "...well, almost all of us. Anyway, you can usually lay low somewhere if you can stomach the outer worlds. That's probably her only shot."

The fact that our guest was miffed about the revelations concerning her gear didn't surprise me. I'd be more than just ticked off if someone wired me up to be monitored and blown to smithereens.

"These AI chips aren't exactly lying around, so either they're sitting on a stash for some reason, or this gadget here is in extremely short supply. Some kind of prototype, perhaps?"

True to my nature, I often unconsciously gesticulated wildly with my hands to emphasize a point. I had done it again this time when I suddenly realized that my hand, which had been injured by the electric shock, already had healed completely - which perplexed me.
