MAD_DOG_MacD@Son of khzvoltz - Age is a state of mind. My recently married daughter thinks it's funny when she comes over to visit to see me in my "Gaming Chair" blasting away at games. You may grow old, doesn't mean you have to grow up to some degree. I'll be 85 and still be a gamer.

@Darthjazzhands - The Commie 64 was awesome. I was a huge fan of the C128 though. I've been with computers since my first one (Altair 8800 which you had to build) in the late Seventies. Elite back then was fun. My friends and I would call each other and trade co-ordinates to things we've found. No planetary landings and no one in my group ever found a Generation Ship which was rumored to be in the original game.

That is awesome. You have my respect

My first was Pong in the 70s at my stepbrother's home. We had a Texas Instruments computer with a tape drive on cassette tape. I recall we had Zork and defender and a few others. My friend across the street had an Atari 2600 so I was at his place a lot. The local arcade was at the bowling alley so I hit all the classic coin ops there every weekend. Great times. I think the closest thing I got to Elite was a fun little shareware game called Escape Velocity, an XY scroller from the mid-90s. Most recent version is EV Override. Fun, quaint game

TI-99/4A?
Also, check out Endless Sky for an EV like game.

Cut my teeth on the 2600.

Not following the conversation really but just wanted to let you know, you aren't alone... I remember those games/systems new in the box at Xmas. My GF finds it amusing that my friends have 'man caves' but I have a 'bridge' (and no one is allowed on deck when the ship is in motion )

I'm a substance abuse social worker for adolescents in trouble with court and they find it really funny that I have a grey beard and can speak in-depth to nearly every game they play, it's my go to ice breaker when they don't want to talk. Cheers.

Wow I think it's safe to say that Elite has drawn back in (or in some cases kept) us Old Timers. Even for the new to the game and lore it's good to see a decent community springing around it. Something that we barely scratched the surface of back in the days of no Internet and no mobile phones.

Big thanks to all that welcomed me in and responded to my responses. Kudos to us that are the bigger kids in the playground. Fly safe CMDRs...

My first game was also Pong. Picked it out of the 1975 Sears Christmas book. Few years later convinced our parents to get us the Atari 2600. They also got us Pac Man with it, but we could never get my Mom off the game. We would come home from school and she would be hogging the game until dinner. Then make us do homework after dinner so she could keep playing, lol. Of course our friend had to one up us with a Colicovision in 1982.

I'm beginning to think we need to start a wing and name it "The Silverbacks"

I just recently joined up with Deep Recon X (can't get enough of just exploring) recently, but that would be a good idea down the road. I feel better knowing that I am not the only "old timer" here.

I just created The Silverbacks. Join when you can or simply support it. Let me know if you have any ideas on sprucing up the wing's page.

Certainly, you aren't the only 'Old Timer'. I started playing Elite in the late 80's on the Atari ST, by which time I was into my late 30's. Then Frontier three or four years later and First Encounters a couple of years or so after that.

Finding this version much more attractive for exploration, mining and trading rather than just combat and assassination missions, which is about all I did in the second two versions. Been at it for fifteen months now and it's giving me something new to smile about every time I boot it up.

This will take you to the Silverbacks, or click "WING" or open DarthJazzHands' profile and go to the bottom and click the name of the wing.

Hello from another ex C64 gamer! Was the "Generation Ship" you mentioned a mission target, stolen from a Military shipyard? If so, I actually found it (or rather it found me!) It didn't register on the radar and was one hell of a fight.
