I consider myself a newb even though I was a kickstarter. I have recently returned to E:D after a couple of years and never really got into it, until now.
I am hooked after two weeks time now and am enjoying learning the ropes. Hope to see other Commanders out in the black!
I am currently just running boom delivery missions and throwing some mining in there willy nilly. I think my favorite roles will end
up being trader/explorer/miner. I've never been big on PvP but will engage in some combat on PvE opponents. Hoping to make some new
friends here at Inara.

I was the same as you almost. Bought the game 6 months-ish after release, and after 6 months I kinda left it. Came back around the end of 2.2 start of 2.3, and i can honestly say, the last 6 months even have been the best Elite has been. Joining Inara only made it better!
So i hope you make some friends here, and have yourself a blast with the game. I also highly recommend joining the Discord server, we're a chatty bunch, but friendly and always willing to help a "newbie" out!

Been playing ED for just under 2yrs, mostly PvE, just now contemplating spending more time in open.
I go back to the days of one-man-and-his-Cobra, on the original C64 version of Elite, so Darthjazzhands' Silverbacks Wing is the one for me
Ah... a Johnny-cum-lately C64 eh? BBC Micro for me. Get in the target practice and warm-up the Mil Beams by tagging a Coriolis to stir up the nest; a few Vipers away and then off to get in some Thargon blapping before the waltz with the mothership.
Anyways... same for me regarding the "spending more time in open" — so much more interesting flying around the mail slot when it's not all NPC shipping. Seen far more burned-out hulks drifting around inside since running in open.
Thought about sidling over to the Silverbacks myself (great choice of name Darth o7) but feel I've got to keep the Midnight association for now. I'm trying to drum up a few of the online Midnight guys who fly to come over here to Inara.

Welcome to the forum. A brand new wing has started up, they seem to focus on thargoid related stuff. Might be your thing, Alien scout corps. If not then drop by the wing page. You can filter by platform and powers. If your Xbox and federation then I hope you'll consider my wing. If not, then no worries, still happy to answer any questions you have regarding gameplay.

There's a large learning curve to ED, so my advice to you would be to take your time. Find out what the game has to offer, and try out its various aspects.
There are also a lot of groups and wings available to join. The more you learn about the game, the more sense you'll be able to make of the aims of each group.
If you have any specific questions, don't be shy to ask. There are a lot of players here who will be only too happy to share their knowledge when asked. You can usually find quite a few of us on the Inara Discord channel, so feel free to jump in!

Hi and welcome. Like you I watched and debated for a year or more. I made such a pigs-ear of Elite 2 back in the day that I was deterred. Wish I'd got braver sooner!!
