ZagmeisterGreetings fellow pilots, I'm a newcomer to Elite and I have to say, the simulation has grown on me. I'm (hopefully) in this for the long run, I'm trying not to grind too much, but rather enjoy the space vistas, planetary landings and grin as I turn wanted NPC scoundrels into space debris every now and then. Currently playing solo, but I'm willing to try open-play one day as well.
Also, using the INARA web site more and more, love the layout and the vastness of information on Elite. Super useful site!

You will find many who prefer the views and exploration aspects almost exclusively.
Jump into VR gear and you may not want to leave.
Open play is quite safe with a minimum of outfitting. Running is almost always successful.
With rare exceptions most pilots you meet are friendly. Use your coms for first contact and say o7- Hi - Hello - Greetings -

Yes, I've heard a lot of positives from people running Elite with VR gear. I haven't got a VR set myself, but I'm enjoying the visuals Elite offers nonetheless,

On a side subject, today I got my first ever notoriety point for accidentally blasting a neutral NPC pilot while I was doing some bounty hunting in a High RES in Ross 129 system. Was just finishing off the last wanted NPC and was about to head back to dock for resupply when it happened. Sure wasn't fun having to wait out 2hrs before it wore off. Well, at least I prospected some raw materials and drove around a bit in my SRV while ticking down the time.

Notoriety only happens for murder, so as soon as you get a fine or bounty added, run to the nearest IF to pay it before the guy dies.
