RotwhylrWelcome, Ease R.W!
First of all, Open is pretty damn good. It's actually way better than solo, for the reasons you mentioned. I went from Solo to Open years ago, and I almost never encounter hostile players. Being a member of a squadron is not necessary, but I found it makes Open easier and far more enjoyable. Also, most hostile PvP can be avoided or escaped without too much trouble. Flying with seasoned players can help with learning how. I'd be happy to discuss it further if you're interested.

I've heard about squadrons! Just haven't been bothered to check it out yet. I might do it once I get back to the bubble, though. I'm currently exploring above the galactic plane, but should be back home in the bubble tomorrow.
I've never been much for PVP, which is why I've avoided Open thus far. It's purely due to a lack of self-esteem, however. Aaand since I'm mostly in my lightweight exploration vessel, I don't have much protection nor do I wish to sacrifice my very pleasant 64 ly jump range.
But I know you can avoid them, I just dislike how stressful it is. I even get stressed out while getting interdicted by NPCs sometimes. But from what I've heard, engineered thrusters and good shields should do the trick, right?
I'm sure I'll give Open a try someday. A squadron sounds like something I should look into for sure.

I myself am ~relatively~ new; but I've only ever played Open, and in all those hours so far I've never encountered a single hostile player. All my time has been spent in the bubble, flying bulky freighters, without a squadron to back me up.
Should tell you something
Some systems are probably much more dangerous but overall I think the "you will be instantly ganked in Open" is a bit of an exaggeration.

If you're worried about open, then check the security report on the galaxy tab and avoid the top systems (or go there in solo). The galaxy is big, real big and it's easy to avoid people - harder to avoid apes

Nah, it's easy to avoid apes on Inara... just eat the banana they give you and throw the peel back at them. If they slip on it, they'll be so embarrassed that they won't come back for days!

We apes do not speak of such horrors. For an ape to slip on a banana peel ... it is quite rare. For those unfortunate few who have, it brought shame on their families for many generations.

This site is an invaluable wealth of information that I have turned to on more occasions than i'd like to admit.
