What others said - take it slowly and earn some cash by tagging bounties, which is good exercise.
I usually recommend to have specialized ships as that way you can make ship fairly good in one thing. There are some ships that can have multipurpose, but often you will have to change modules / refit ship for different task.
Earlier in this threat I posted suggested exploration ship @ price of less than 1M (remember, never take off without rebuy). This ship does not require engineering and can be used as ship to unlock some of engineers.

If you create this ship and do Road to Riches (scan only bodies that tells you to scan), in couple of hours you should have enough to get DBX or Asp Explorer. Once you get some good cash, then I suggest to get SRV and start exploring lendable planets and collecting materials etc...

I might add try minning to get credits unless you have a good fighting ship.

I've been using Inara for quite a while, through several different resets, but have never really looked at these Discussions. So here I am introducing myself, Alone Wulff. I have moderate experience in most areas of Elite and hope I can contribute to some discussions in the future. I also hope there is much less toxicity in this Discuss section than I've experienced in other places (sorry to be so sceptical...).

Inara tends to be calm & friendly. It does have its moments, but generally, the people are helpful and chilled.

I have moderate experience in most areas of Elite and hope I can contribute to some discussions in the future. Welcome AW! I'm a fairly new E:D player myself but I've found Inara to be overwhelmingly friendly.

Coming from a 'relative Newb' in game, I've found Inara to be extremely helpful, & most of the members very informative.
My sense of the community is that of being above-average in maturity, & well-moderated by the members, & in the occasional instance of heated debates, Artie has & will step in & advise & caution with his omnipotent Dojo powers.
Those instances are most notable for their rarity.

I'm rather new to Elite having picked it up for the first time while it was on sale just before Halloween, and I'm even newer to Inara. The fact that I found the site has increased the joy I already had with the game with all the Roleplay logs of other commanders making it feel like a more connective environment. I am a lover of games that seem to let RP in some form flourish, and am glad to see it here. I hope to get to know you all, and hopefully learn a thing or two along with all the fun!

Heh choose your topics; Half the players here will cry if you mention menu-logging, but are quite happy to flip-flop the menus to collect materials. It's an absolute laugh.

StandemosI suggest you find a good squad to join. Ask lots of questions no matter how dumb you think they are. Go at your pace and don't try to be the rabbit. Explore all the different aspects of the game. I would add that Angels of Death are always requiting and we would be happy to have you in our ranks.

I wandered around trading for a while, found it a lonely spreadsheet game.
Then I did this and within hours transformed from a lone lost sheep into leading combat wings into battle in CZs shooting up everything in a Dropship, and racking up hundreds of millions of credits while bringing people news of the latest imperial court gossip and where to find the best mutton vindaloo in the galaxy.
10/10 will tell sorties of setting fire to attack ships off the shoulder of Orion and taking screenshots of wingmates Corvette crashing through the letterbox on yet another failed approach.
