General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Oh, hi there," I stopped on my tracks entering the bar and immediately seeing Kasumi sitting nearby. "Not the farthest corner today?"

Giving that place a look, I noticed that, except staff members and few random unremarkable locals, the bar was almost empty. Which was quite unusual. I barely resisted the urge to ask one of the waiters, like, did they have any major firefights or nuclear explosions lately that wiped off the largest part of the clientele. Instead, I addressed to Kasumi again.

"So, what's the story? Hells I'm hungry after so much flying... After more flying."
18 Oct 2023, 10:55pm
I shrugged.

“That far corner is reserved for when I’m sure I’ll be staying here. Which I can’t without knowing what you’ll prefer for today.”

I stretched, yawning a little too loudly at the same time, then tried shaking off some of the tiredness from my head.

“And you guessed right about the story. Heard… well, heard. Picked up some weird signals from one of those barnacle matrix sites as I was in one of those systems - “ I blinked with my right eye to give away that it was merely meant to be a convincing cover for ‘Those idiots made me learn about it through my link to the hive’. “ - and had a look. Let’s just say… I wasn’t expecting some really fucking big towers there, like they’re building a city or some ship-launching outpost.”

I shifted around on the couch slightly, feeling quite at ease in the low G environment, instead of getting my spine compressed by 1.3 Gs.

“Anyway, I think I wouldn’t mind some - “ Another yawn escaped my mouth. “Sorry. Some food, either.”
18 Oct 2023, 11:15pm
"Yeah... I guess we'd better move to that pizza place. Stuff they can fill your table with beats this bog completely."

I nodded towards the exit; but then, hearing about the towers, turned to stare at a random direction unfocused, rubbing my chin as I tried to compact my own knowledge into a somewhat laconic form.

"Heard about them too. Saw footage in first reports. Looks... Ugly. And foreboding. My command haven't given any new instructions yet, and... It might also mean that they're changing their plans real quick, maybe even now as we speak. Let's move then, I guess. I also have an idea to share, about those VR thingies and you'll be the first person to hear it, since you can't report me. Phah."
18 Oct 2023, 11:25pm
"Ugly, foreboding... however you'd like to put it, there's just no way those things... they just popped up right out of nowhere. One week, the places looked a bit... creepy, maybe, with some barnacle lookalikes that aren't as good as their siblings, and then from one day to the next, you've got a fucking three kilometer tall tower just sitting there, with a bunch of smaller ones next to it? It's not going to be good, no matter what."

I stood up.

"Anyway, we can talk about it more once we're in the place. Or maybe we'll come back here, dunno. But hell, can I tell you a lot about the stuff I saw around there. And, as for the food, today's not a pizza day for me, but it'll still be good."
18 Oct 2023, 11:43pm
"Ah," I chuckled, "I guess they could do some eggs and bacon for you even if it's not on the menu. And my tastes... Well, seems like they specialise in it, phah."

I enter the bar and make my way over to a secluded table. The bar had certainly changed since my last visit, the darkened corners now illuminated and security was now making regularly irregular patrols. One of the bar staff makes their way over to me a little excitement seen in their movements.

"Hello Ms. What can I get for you?"

I pause briefly before answering.

"I'll just take a citrus soda please."

The look I received in response was of disbelief. I didn't really blame them because who comes to a bar and orders a non alcoholic beverage. The waitress bounds away to grab my drink. I pull out a my data tablet and pull up as much information about the events leading up to Creamy disappearing.

'I need to find Vodan.' I thought to myself 'He was with him last so if anyone has any information on his wearabouts it would be him.' I finish as the bar staff returns with my drink.

The Leaping Lamb would be ready to go within the hour. Porters were already reloading her supplies and luggage from the apartment, leaving her with time to kill. Christmas day was just around the corner, so Lambast would have to put the search for Lord Goodness on hold for now.

Sauntering into the Galactic she compared the room to what little security footage there was of Lord Goodness when he was here. A DJ booth stood where the stage had been, and the piano had been pushed aside, and left half covered in a dark corner beside the booth. Sticky rings from glasses and bottles decorated the fallboard. Even the accompanying cushioned stool was ripped and stained. Moving a few abandoned snack packets, Lambast opened it revealing the keyboard.

More rings and chipped keys greeted her, causing Lambast to shake her head at the disrespect shown for an expensive musical instrument. Moving the rest of the rubbish onto the cloth, she bundled up the lot and dumped it on the floor, so she could investigate further. Caring not for the looks she was getting from staff, she opened the lid. The waft of real wood filled her nostrils, and she admired the harp-like arrangement of strings inside. She was glad to see there wasn’t much debris, and no one had vandalized its inner workings.

There was a felt pocket containing tools, cloths, brushes and oils to take care of the piano, and it was clear that no one had bothered to use it. Knowing Lord Goodness, Lambast knew he’d ask someone to take care of his piano if he had to leave it behind. There wasn’t a lot Lord Goodness didn’t mind leaving behind, but his wine collection and instruments he cared for.

Above the lock rail, something that looked like a data pad was fixed to the frame. It wouldn’t budge when she tugged on it, so Lamb contacted Holly, and pointed the lens of her own pad at it.

“Holly, what is that old boy?”

“Er, that is a holo-projector and media storage for displaying written music” replied a droll older man’s voice.

She doubted Lord Goodness would be bright enough to leave a message on the device, but it was worth a look nonetheless.

“Be a good chap and download what's in it if you please Holly?”

“Oo, yeah. That’s gonna take a bit. ‘Ang on, I’ll get on it” replied the same, almost single toned voice.

Having drawn nothing but blanks and uncovering no leads the bar was always a place I could go to try and clear my mind. Entering the bar I take a brief look around and notice some of the staff seemingly concentrated on a sole individual near a "darker" corner. Glancing over I see the unkempt piano and my heart sinks. Creamy had asked me to take care of it while he was away. Due to some unfortunate circumstances I was unable to uphold the request.

The individual snooping around in the innards of the instrument catches my attention. Cautiously I walk over to them and clear my throat gently so as to not cause a panic response.

"Excuse me.... might I be of some form of assistance. I'm not entirely certain the owner of this piano would appreciate you digging around the insides."

I let out a sigh as I place a hand on the neglected instrument a mournful look on my face.

"I am soo sorry love. I should have been here to keep you safe." I say to the piano then look back at the individual.
21 Dec 2023, 1:41pm
She very much looked his type thought Lambast evaluating the woman at the piano. Female, young and alive. She was wearing an expression Lambast had seen in too many of her staff or passengers when Lord Goodness was mentioned. A sort of expectant longing for news that he was nearby, the unspoken question hiding behind a thin veil of casual interest.

“How astute of you. He most certainly would not appreciate me digging around the inside of his anything. However, as his employer and would-be owner of a ship he donated to the cause, I will continue digging” said Lambast clearly indicating she did not intend to stop.

A hint of pity wriggled in to Lambast’s mind as she looked at the young women in front of her, and she expelled an annoyed snort as the festive spirit encouraged her to be nice.

“Listen here” she said a thin slice less directly “Lord Goodness is a slut, unworthy of your affection. You will find a better man here” she said gesturing to the bar “Anyone that doesn't get too drunk to make it back to their cockpit for example, would be a better partner. Forget Goodness, and .. Merry Christmas or some such”
21 Dec 2023, 1:56pm
That was certainly not the response I was expecting. It left me with a dumbfounded expression on my face. Then realizing this person possibly thought I was speaking of Creamy I let out an unhindered laugh.

"Oh... oh my no. Absolutely not. He is certainly attractive but I could never."

I take a moment regain my composure and in a more serious and controlled tone continue.

"I was talking directly to the piano. You mentioned being his employer... what exactly are you looking for? Has something happened to him?" I ask the question in the hopes to let on that I may know more about his disappearance than her.

I mean I was one of the last people he was "with" when he went missing and I certainly didn't need or want people thinking I had some hand in his disappearance. If it turned out that this woman was indeed a non threat I may give what little information I have available, to her. For now though it was wise to err on the side of caution.

"Myself and some of the other staff have been informed that he seems to be missing shifts frequently around here. Some of us have even had to take up extra duties to cover for him since his last shift." I mention alluding to me being a bartender here.

Taking a closer look at the girl's face, Lambsat took her pad away from the data store inside the piano.

“Ere, I ain’t done yet” complained Holly’s voice.

Ignoring him, Lambast checked the list of people last connected with Lord Goodness, scrolling until she found her file.

“Do forgive me m’lady” said Lambast with a shallow curtsy putting Holly back in the piano. “Your latest hairstyle has very much transformed your aspect”

“S’better” jabbed a muffled voice from inside the piano.

“Count Goodness has expressed an interest in discovering whereabouts of his son” Explained Lambast. "As Lord Goodness has not been in correspondence with anyone for some time, they, the count and countess, have grown concerned. Would you happen to know where one could find Ina Muir? Her flight command was less than cooperative with my inquiries. Understandably”

"Ina? Haven't heard from her in months not since.... well it's been a while since we last spoke. It's also doubtful she would know any more than......"

I cut myself off.

"His parents are worried about him? That seems almost surprising considering he seems to hold much animosity towards them.. at least it seems that way when they are mentioned."

Realizing this person seemed to have detailed information on me I figured it best to not hold any information back that may be of use. I look around at the members in the bar not seeing anyone of particular interest I lower my voice to a level only perceptible to the immediate area.

"If you are looking for Ina thinking she has any information regard his whereabouts she won't know much. At least I don't think she would. I don't know where he is but I do think there is someone who might... A man named Vodan was seen in this wearing Lord Goodness' clothing and cologne."

I observe Lambast closely ensuring I wasn't about to be on the receiving end of something.

"I know for certain he was with him last and I have been trying to figure out how to get in touch with Vodan to gather more information. Problem is raiders don't play nice and I doubt he would be even remotely willing to answer any contact attempts made by myself or anyone not in his crew."

I shift uneasily thinking about what could be happening to Creamy at this very moment. For all I knew he could be stuck in a cell much like I was being fed scraps. My mind flashes with memories of being trapped in the dark hold of Diaz's carrier moments of beatings whipping by. My expression goes blank and my face flushes pale as the fear I had suppressed flooded to the surface. I back away from Lambast, her face contorts and shifts into one of Diaz's crew members, stumbling over the piano bench and falling onto the torn seat.

"No! Get away!" I scream out not aware what I was seeing wasn't real and just a memory of the torment I had been subjected to.

Hysterics were not uncommon when a girl discovered Lord Goodness had only been interested in a good time, and the pillow talk really was just pillow talk, but this woman should have been immune to that particular problem.

Checking her short foil had not made it to her hand, and she hadn’t in fact assaulted Silvia with it, Lambast looked around the room with mild embarrassment, wishing she didn’t have to stand there with her pad while Holly downloaded the piano’s data store.

Thankfully, Lambast found she hadn’t stabbed Silvia, the girl was simply having some sort of personal breakdown. Tapping a foot, Lambast watched Silvia with interest, making it clear to anyone looking their way, that there was a large musical interment between them, and Lambast hadn’t done anything to cause the spectacle in front of her. Observing overt emotional displays was interesting, but Lambast’s dispassionate obviations were never well received.

“Right, all done ‘ere” said Holly

“Well, thank you and .. .. I wouldn’t worry about Lord Goodness” said Lambast uncomfortable, and unfamiliar with giving emotional support “Scum floats, so it’s a safe bet to say he’ll soon drift along” She said sidestepping Silvia with her hands in view, so everyone could see she wasn't doing anything to the emotionally fragile woman.

Lambast was eager to get into the well-lit area of the bar, out the way of unfounded allegations, if not back to her ship.
