Elite: General talk

My ultimate point is this.

You cannot change how others play and you cannot criticise them for playing differently then you if it is within the EULA & ToU, all they are doing is "whatever it takes".

If you want to avoid hostile interactions then you better learn to "survive in a futuristic cutthroat galaxy". Or visit PG or Solo.

Bickering about who does what is absolutely pointless, whether you think it is legitimate gameplay or not, whether you think they are bad people or not, it makes no difference, people will still play how they play in a game that is not real life and at the end of the day is entertainment. It is not on the levels of gladiatorial entertainment, so I thank my lucky stars that I am only being shot in the eye's with relatively harmless light.

Igneel PrimeBut there is the fact that they fly in open knowing they're not equipped to deal with players who are out to kill them and then scream as soon as they get looked at. They go where the gankers are (Open) and complain about gankers. Yes FDev does a very poor job at delivering that information to new players but there's no excuse for players who have been around for a bit. All that Frontier would have to do is throw community tutorials in their face. Like link them to Exigeous.

If people get blown up on their way to a station after hours of mining or days of exploration, you can make the case that they were inexperienced, not careful enough, or even downright stupid.

What you can't say is that they were consenting. If you need their consent to feel good about ganking them, watch how they react to interdiction. If they fight it instead of submitting, it's a pretty good indicator they're not consenting. Simple as that. If you blow them up anyway, you're doing it without their consent, and the fact they were in open is not a valid excuse.

No commander requires consent to attack another commander in Elite: Dangerous.

Fly Dangerously

Fair, but we can still argue about the (lack of meaningful) game mechanics around PvP.

Fly Dangerously

Oh I do. Always bulldozing my way through the mailslot, clattering off every ship and surface as I career towards the pad, before smashing into it and finally flicking the V's to the ATC person who kept telling me to slow down. How dare they tell me to be mindful of other pilots....Everyone else keeps telling me to fly dangerously!

RenraikuThe game defaults to Open because that is the intended mode to play in.

Which later is developed with a flawed p2p mechanics.... And what was the initial design for offline/solo ? Default or nor, the other modes are hidden for new player until  chosen to end and start the game again.

However, it also states the following:
"In Open Play you may encounter other Commanders Connected Via This Mode"

It is not technically a warning, it is advisory.

However, before you purchase Elite: Dangerous explicitly on the Epic Games Store the following blurb appears:

Elite Dangerous is the definitive massively multiplayer space epic, bringing gaming’s original open world adventure to the modern generation with a connected galaxy, evolving narrative and the entirety of the Milky Way re-created at its full galactic proportions.
Starting with only a small starship and a few credits, players do whatever it takes to earn the skill, knowledge, wealth and power to survive in a futuristic cutthroat galaxy and to stand among the ranks of the iconic Elite. In an age of galactic superpowers and interstellar war, every player’s story influences the unique connected gaming experience and handcrafted evolving narrative. Governments fall, battles are lost and won, and humanity’s frontier is reshaped, all by players’ actions.

The thing that something is written somewhere is not  guarantee for consent upon a button click.  Consent is only when you clearly understand what is given as information.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terms_and_Conditions_May_Apply  gives a very nice explanation of how the things works with this consent thingies.

Oof.

Just pointing out why some people compare it to rape. The idea that people switch to open because they consent to ganking is a bit far fetched, don't you think?

Go where gankers go? LOL. Where do you think the most gankers congregate?

Without any prejudice...

Every player has the option to choose to incorporate potentially hostile players in their game - presented the moment they choose to start the game...

If the prospect of losing ship / cargo / data is not an issue everything is fine & dandy...  Otherwise it will always be the player's decision to take the risk of loss by actions of another player, there is always a choice.

True, but some people claim that open implies consent. It doesn't.

Why would anyone even want it to be a walk in the park? It’s called Elite ‘Dangerous’ for reason!

I don't recall saying anything about consent.

I've heard this a thousand times and I'm sure it'll be annoying for the next thousand.

The rank of Dangerous implies that the commander who has achieved it will not be a walk in the park to deal with if you get on the wrong side of them.
Fdev also used it to imply that the galaxy was also dangerous.
Clever people, who'd have thunk it.
