Elite: General talk

True. The only reason X series won over Freelancer is due to how you had more control over what happened in the simulation. Freelancer was absolutely mindblowing with mods though. Can't forget Freespace either.

And then of course there are the classics, like the Wing Commander series or my personal favourite from that sub-genre of space-sims:

The only space-sim I've ever played other than E:D has been MS Space Simulator, & that was back in my MS-DOS days. (I still have that DOS machine & the stack of 3.5" floppies for the game).

Oh heck yeah, I've played that too. It was mindblowing at the time

I'm with Amata here... I loved the Wing Commander games. I was obsessed with Privateer, it was being told that E:D was like Privateer that got me to buy it.

Tie Fighter & X-Wing were awesome too. Seeing the cover again makes me really miss it.

It's more "space combat sim" but yeah, hell yeah, it was awesome!

After all the time passed from these days, I'm starting to be happy about my first PC being awful backward piece of trash (having a P-2 in early 10's was kinda awkward). I've enjoyed playing Frontier, Wing Commander and another oldschool gemstones for a pair of years until I could buy a newer PC. I guess it shaped my tastes.

Don't forget "forced alliance: the glarious mandate" It was considered to be terrible, but holds a spot in my heart Mostly because you could work your way up to admiral and gain control of a capital ship, all the way from new recruit. Your actions impacted diplomacy and the story. At the time that was pretty cool.

Heh, Wing Commander Privateer is why I’m here. I put money towards Star Citizen when it was first kickstarted, but we all know how that’s going. Then one day I remembered having played Elite on the Commodore 64 and that Elite Dangerous had also been kickstarted but was an actually released game. Been hooked ever since. The Imperial Cutter is a lot more luxurious than my Galaxy or Tarsus ever was, ha!

For some nostalgia, here’s an unfinished version of one of that old game’s best songs that I started working on... Jesus, back in 2016? Maybe I’ll finish it someday.

You know what I definitely don’t miss? Having different autoexec.bat and config.sys files for different games. That and Wing Commander II sucking up half a hard drive after installing the game, two expansions, and the speech pack. Was like what, ten 3.5” floppies that needed installing?

Pleasure base theme using the New Detroit landing pad thumbnail... Tut tut.

Also, modern remake of Privateer when?

Yeah, definitely amateur hour there.

Also, that reminds me, Privateer had a sequel... and I recall hating it since it had no connection to the previous game in any capacity. I should see about trying to play it again and give it a fair shake. I never tried to finish it.

I had Privateer 2, it had Clive Owen as the main character... you're right, it had no connection and didn't feel like a Wing Commander game. I'm not sure if I finished it but I do remember not enjoying it at all. It didn't help that I've never been a Clive Owen fan.

Ah yes, Discovery Freelancer times between 2008-2016. Wonderful community which turned into circle-jerking and toxicity underneath damn good job expanding over original game. There was even a moment when players even held server hostage (TL;DR staff got rid of most toxic people who also were people generating a lot of activity as respective faction leaders). This is why I poke at the fact that what is considered toxicity on INARA or respective player groups is nowhere close to what I remember from Discovery GC - and one of the reasons why I finally turned to Elite in the first place.

I remember there also was a total conversion mod (in Russian BUT more or less translated into English though), which had a simple goal to restore what initially Freelancer was supposed to look like in the first place. That mod, despite lack of a lot of polishing, was like exploring a wholly different game. Freelancer has fallen the victim of over-expanding Chris Roberts' ego though - what made him kicked from lead designer(?) role if I remember right.

Anything at least partially related to the Elite:Dangerous, but doesn't exactly fit the Game talk thread. Elite community, astrophysics and so on...
