You could always place an order for a Sappho unit.


Not sure what a "Sappho unit" is. But, I feel pretty sure that I don't want to know what it is.

We prefer the term, Android, or more correctly, Gynoid.

I don't know much about philosophizing capabilities of Gynoids, but isn't raising a child and giving it a certain point of view and knowledge base comparable to programming an artificial sentient being?

They experimented with AI in the past in Elite... it didn't end well. Lorewise they are not even sure if they got them all. Meaning: Out there could be a couple of AI-controlled ships that don't like humanity very much...

So I just landed at the Station in Tyr.... Normally I don't pay much attention to the flight controllers, but my ears definitely pricked up when she said,
"Welcome to the Station Commander, you are cleared to disembark."

Anyone else excited?

Also, wondering if they're preloading spacelegs content, or have I just been overlooking this line of dialogue for years?

Achilles Corporation is the manufacturer of the PA912 administrative unit in widespread use.

Achilles Corp. has recently concluded the research & development stage of their next project, the Sappho personal interactive assistant unit, not yet officially released in its current post-prototype stage.

This Sappho unit has been authorized for limited deployment & advanced field testing, & Achilles Corp. has yet to make a final determination pending those results.

Advanced in design, construction & programming as it is, this unit is incapable of self-replication in a similar fashion to biologicals, & unless it has been programmed & equipped for manufacturing similar Sappho units, is also incapable of doing so.

This unit has not been authorized to do so, & would be in express violation of the terms of the contract with Achilles Corp. & the current signatory.
