Elite: General talk

The PP system needs a massive overhaul, the 3 week merit get the prize concept it terrible, its could and should be so much more.

As for Odyssey, i cannot believe FB will make it the stand alone game it seems. Like Horizons made the SRV necessary by linking it to mat farming and engineers, i expect they will do something similar with the FPS in odyssey. Which for the non fps fans, and i am one, will be quite the hobson's choice.

I fired ED up last night for the first time in months, and it was obvious I even forgot where the throttle was. I have about 3 more engineers to unlock, but it's going to be tough to get back into the grind frame of mind.

I had fun Saturday, I must say. My squadron, Canonn, held a CQC session, and I managed to play it in VR this time, before the server crashed after about an hour. Awesome stuff! CQC in VR gives you a much better idea of distances, speeds and maneuvering.

That aside, I would really like to get involved more with multiplayer. I joined a wing Friday evening, but there was a bit of a language barrier (German wing, me not so good with German yet), and it was my first time in a wing, so I was not aware of the ins and outs and protocols involved. I’ve done my post-experience required reading, so next time should be better, hopefully.

If anybody out there would like me to tag along in future for the odd mission or whatever, please drop me a message. I’m fairly adept, like cats, shower regularly and am good with power tools. I’m fairly shy and retiring, hence only have two friends from Inara in-game, and circumstances for simultaneous play are rarely in alignment.

Khm. Interesting question appeared here.
If I intentionally get myself dragged into some bloody exhausting war of attrition, that will last a week and require a constant CZ action, leaving me no time do to anything other than CZ, even affecting the IRL scheduling of things, just because of being personally interested in such a process of waging a space war... Will it count as game playing me? Or it's still me, playing the game in this strange way, which I see fit for myself?

It's not about game of numbers, rep, or credit, or rank, or combat bond, or any other kind of raising another numeric bingo-bongo, I just love the stuff. Okay, I want my first Elite badge being Combat, but who says that I'll stop after this.

Unless you want it to, & then, no right to complain.

Not that I'm trying to argue or somehow undermine this phrase. Quite the opposite, in fact, I found it quite interesting. People play a game vs. game playing with people. In ED you have dozens of ways to play a game, and almost all of them (except outright gamebreaking) are considered "a right way to do it". Even some episodes of grind (yes, materials, damn them) can be justified.

But from now on I'll always remember about "game, that plays with people". Maybe it even played me, touching the needed strings. And this eventually made me play my way. And everyone else, playing their way, too.

I know that I avoid games or situations/activities in games, where I don't sense that I have the liberty to play it at my leisure, at my convenience, for my enjoyment. I mentioned this topic before... https://inara.cz/board/2/390557/#390557 as in, I'd have the obligation to log in daily/regularly, rather than at my convenience. Then, to me at least, it becomes a chore.

"Not what I signed up for".

I would, in essence, be setting myself up for letting the game play me. Some may find that perfectly fine. I don't. I've played some games where I could sense the 'gaming psychology' at work, trying to compel me to logging in daily, to avoid the "FOMO Effect" (Fear Of Missing Out) which in those cases, there was a daily grind requirement in order to obtain something very special, either exclusive or very expensive otherwise.

Might I be sensitized due to those experiences? Perhaps. I hate the sense of something/someone trying to manipulate me & whenever I do, I actively resist it.

Is that the same for everyone? Obviously not, but it's an easy trap into which to fall. To each their own.

Synthya Wylderthere was a daily grind requirement in order to obtain something very special, either exclusive or very expensive otherwise.

Exactly. This is the worst thing you can run into in games. Some projects have amounts of tedious, numbing, mandatory grind, that are just incomparable to running SRV for a pair of days of your choice. And you'll be a beating bag if you don't do that grind. It is easy to see and understand how "game" plays "people" in these occasions. Developers are implementing one grind hole after another and people have to do it, in order to stay competitive.

But I was speaking about more metaphoric stuff that seemed to be far from original meaning (as usual, phah).

changing the Subject slightly

I bought a pre-order of Odyssey over Christmas - my reasoning was at the time that the game had already given me my monies worth in E:D Horizons and that i wanted to be in on the action from the start.

Now I hear about not buying into pre-orders and that they are a bit of a scam - looking at Star Citizen, which I have not bought into and it looks likely I will not for the foreseeable future  - was I a bit of a Noob buying into Odyssey?
