Elite: General talk

EpisparhIf Drew declares DOOM it will be all over

He is not, rather the opposite.

It'll be over for ED if either of these things happens:

  • SC enters beta
  • NMS implements a proper flight model

SakashiroSC enters beta

Then it'll be over... in about nine years.

Yeah, we count on the competition not wanting a piece of ED's pie. I think that's the very definition of living on borrowed time.

No Man's Sky will never replace Elite, and it's not meant to. NMS is its own thing so it is difficult to compare it to Elite and SC.

I know It is not OA who was most positive about ED. Drew is by large the best fan boy of the franchise.

Personally, I do not care for either of those but I am playing other game genres, so I am not bound to space games.

I'd say NMS compared to SC and ED is like comparing Nintendo to PlayStation and XBox. It's unique enough in it's own way that it doesn't really compete with the other two.

NMS is ok if you want a space-age Elder Scrolls experience, SC is permanently incomplete and resource hungry.

Other than that they’re both great

I kind of think that for SC to have a good future, they need to take the time to put a pause on developing beyond where they are at now (3.14) and push to port over everything to Unreal Engine 5. I think their Lumberyard engine will be obsolete by the time it hits Beta phase at this rate.

IMO Elite:Dangerous was handed the yellow card with the botched and tone-deaf release of Odyssey. Those who are currently playing other stuff are just waiting (and hoping) for FDev to get their issues straigthened out. If they manage to do that before people get too invested in another game they might get away with a black eye... if they take too long or screw up yet again in the near future the playerbase might decide to hand out a red card instead.

Getting too invested. Already got into SC and bought a couple of their ships and might spend the money on another if it goes up for sale with their next update. These are not cheap mind you but the level of detail put into them is amazingly mind blowing. That is money I'd have been fine giving to FDev in the past. Not so much now. Maybe if they offered up a Majestic lol. I still play ED with the squadron I'm in but my overall activity in the game is way down at the moment.

I see that Zac is continue the small talks at the forum. IMO, that is some ostrich tactics that will not work in the current situation.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The difference between NMS and Elite is that there are more players on PC and consoles combined. Oh, not only that, but there's crossplay. Oh, not only that, but NMS has since put out a patch to support PS5 and Xbox X/S.

Until I get my new PC to run SC, I've been playing NMS exclusively. I uninstalled Elite when they dropped console support for the near future.

I find the planets in NMS vastly more interesting than those in ED. People say ED's planets look more realistic, but how realistic really is the appearance of a lonely handful of complex plants on an otherwise barren desert planet without weather and protection from cosmic radiation? The plants in ED don't seem to be part of any ecosystem, they're just easter eggs to be found and scanned, so that on-foot explorers have something to do. I love the fact that NMS has caves, water, rain and storms, and that you can actually find someone else's base on a planet or build your own, even under water. I've enjoyed base building since I first played Fallout 4.

There are only two things I'd miss if I switched from ED to NMS: the flight model, and human avatars. Space combat is still very good in ED, and the Holo-Me editor greatly facilitates roleplay. I'm still having fun fleshing out Sakashiro's character and background story, so I guess that'll keep me in ED a bit longer.

They stick out of the ground like poorly placed 3D models... Wait a minute...
