While I love exploring and doing exobiology, I can't help but feel that this aspect of the game remains lacking in potential. The vistas are all beautiful for sure, but when it comes to alien life, there's still a lot missing. Now, I fully understand (a) that the galaxy might be rather empty other than the most basic life forms, so ED needs to keep it realistic, and (b) procedural generation of diverse biomes is no easy feat with an existing game engine that wasn't exactly build for it. It would also require something like 2 to 3 years of development, time and resources that could be spend on developing stuff that's already in the game. However, the thought of more diverse biomes and new gameplay tied to those is enticing to me:

Interactive Flora: Imagine plants that do more than just sit there. Some might glow in low light, others could release spores when disturbed, and a few could even provide rare resources for crafting or trade.

Alien Fauna: What if planets had creatures roaming their surfaces? Some could be harmless, grazing in herds, while others might be territorial or even dangerous. Imagine missions to study their behavior, protect settlers from them, or harvest valuable resources.

Diverse Biomes: Expand the variety of planetary landscapes. Ice worlds could have glowing moss or slow-growing lichens, while desert planets might feature sprawling cactus-like plants that thrive in extreme conditions.

Tied to Gameplay: These additions could fit seamlessly into existing loops. Advanced exobiology could involve multi-step research tasks or studying how fauna interact with their environment. Resource collection could focus on unique materials found only on certain planets. And settlement missions could involve gathering alien plants to support terraforming efforts or defending colonies from wildlife.

What do you folks think about that?

If Frontier weren't so stupid, they would support the modding community by allowing independent volunteers to create new content. This content could be tested on a beta server by other volunteers and then reviewed by a Frontier committee, which would either approve or reject it. We could have ship interiors, forests and weather on planets, cities on starports, shops, activities, community centers, and more... and Frontier wouldn't even have to lift a finger.

This is already in the game to some extent. Some plants like the anemone are bioluminescent, and some (like brain trees) when shot, provide raw material resources, similar to shooting nodes off of vents.
