Seriously, this is either another CDPR-style train wreck in slow motion, or one of the most daring marketing stunts in recent gaming history. Either way, I'm looking forward to May 19th.

I was mining in a type 9 at 6pm down under time last night.

My main concern is optimization. That alone will make or break this. I really hope it is in phase 4. I don't want to have to pray for it to make it in the launch version.

They already said Alpha isnt optimized due to them having to ensure the availability of files for editing. Optimization will come on release just like after any other major Alpha stage of any other game. WoWS was absolutely horrid during alpha because of the same thing, as soon as it went into Beta / Release it was perfect.

I'm a QA/Dev, trust me I know. We usually put optimization in Beta but since Frontier isn't doing a beta, it needs to be in phase 4. Waiting for launch isn't acceptable from a quality perspective but if the customers don't care they will get away with it. Elite is one of only two products I have left that I can support and I'd rather not have that change. It's really concerning how the quality of products has been sliding for decades and no one seems to mind.

After thinking about it further, if it were up to me, I'd launch EDO into an open beta and describe it as such (progress carries forward) on May 19th for PC and then do the full release when it drops on consoles. That would give a better impression. I would do this if what we've seen quality wise is in any way an accurate representation of what they have. If the internal build has progressed much further ahead and we don't have the full picture, then they're fine.

You may want to take that up with FD, they stated a while ago there would be a beta before the official release after the Alpha completion (not sure how they would do it to begin with unless they will just overwrite the Alpha server). With the delays in the Alpha it may only be a week or two but I havent seen anything on it since then saying they wont be doing it anymore.

Yeah, I'll have to see if I know anyone that knows anyone that works there. For the time being, I'll wait and see what Phase 4 reveals when I run my tests.

I don't think they said there will be any public beta and also the absence of the public beta doesn't mean there will be no beta at all (they may run it completely internally). In fact, it may be already running on their internal game build which doesn't need to be same as the alpha build put to public and may be a couple of weeks ahead.

That would make a huge amount of sense. Gives them time to polish whilst the user base continues to feel part of the process without going straight to "I bought this and it doesn't work" type rage that (rightly) follows a rushed formal release.

Sadly marketing often dictates deadlines, I've known projects get pushed out the door simply because marketing had already booked the billboards. Companies will live with our disappointment but hate any negitive press.

Had to be really.

Theres better choices to use, but I too had to get my super-chromed Cutter snapped. Gonna enjoy walking around and jumping onto that.

I hate marketing and sales. Those Sau always sell things that don't exist yet and then I have to build it!

Phase 4 is so short, I wonder if it's even possible to walk around a Cutter...
