Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Indeed, 33 you said?" Lilith muttered, before adding, "Sorry...."

She gathered herself up and adjusted herself into her commanding stance before stepping out into the cool air of the Docks corridoors with a determined stride, following the signs to pad 33.
28 Nov 2016, 5:44pm
"Don't be. It's your life, like you said." He walked alongside her, glancing about the docking bay at the ships coming and going. "The universe is a big, cruel, unforgiving place. It's easy to become just like it."

They turned the corner to the hangar for pad 33. He stopped, turning to her, catching her gaze.

"All I'm trying to say is, don't lose that basic goodness. Don't forget who you are. I can't tell you who that is, but I saw glimpses of it in the bar." He managed a slight smile. "You're more than the bounties you have. Remember that."

As they entered the hangar, Bloodfeather's running lights warmed to them. The white Fer-de-Lance had blemishes in places; scored duralium hull panels told the story of hundreds of jumps and thousands of lightyears. On the panel behind the hardpoint door, the familiar Imperial eagle insignia, ringed by the silhouette of two planets and four stars, stood in defiance of the elements. The boarding ramp lowered, and Isaiah started up the ramp and into the ship's interior.

The ship was modestly equipped with creature comforts - the forward cabin was a functional-but-otherwise-drab setup, while the cargo hold was adorned with different storage lockers and empty cargo racks. The ladder that led up to the cockpit was folded and stowed, but as the interior lights came on, it unfurled and locked into place.
28 Nov 2016, 5:59pm
*These bloody goody-two shoes* Lilith thought to hersef, mentally grinding her teeth but maintaining a calm exterior. *If I hadn't had that goddam breakdown in the bar.... When I get my hands on that damned Doctor...*

Lilith climbed the ramp behind Isaiah, looking around for any signs of a trap. There was still no guarantee he was completely trustworthy so the risk of there being other crew members aboard was high as far as she was concerned. Instinctively, she paced her right hand close to her gun holster and kept it unclipped as she examined every corner for signs of another person.

"S'pose I better say now. If there's anyone else aboard here I'm shooting first and asking questions later..." She said loudly, "No offence Isaiah, girls gotta look after herself."

She was on high alert now. This was basically the wolfs den and she was the unwitting rabbit. But she followed him into the cockpit nonetheless.

"Never been a fan of these things myself. Too specialised..." She commented, standing at the back by the side of the ladder hatch in case anyone tried to climb up unexpectedly.
28 Nov 2016, 6:12pm
"Relax. It's just me. I don't typically have passengers," he said, sitting down in the pilot's seat. "Say hi, Blood."

"Hello there, Lilith," Bloodfeather's vocoder filled the cockpit, speaking with a pleasant tone. "If there's anything I can say for certain, it's that you're the first person to be on this ship in some time. Isaiah is typically very particular about who he lets aboard."

He chuckled at Lilith's statement regarding the ship. "You know how many people tell me they don't like the Fer-de-Lance? Quite a few. It's definitely not a ship for everyone." He ran a hand along the back of the flight stick, smiling to himself. "The one I had before Bloodfeather was something else. It used to be a diplomatic transport. It was one of the original ZPG R6's, the ones that didn't have the power plant and thruster upgrades, so you had to be careful with power management. It required a deft hand to fly - probably the reason why people hated it so much. Bloodfeather's one of the newer ones - people don't complain nearly as much about the new R6's because they're a bit more nimble. Now every gunslinger this side of the Pegasi Sector is running around with one."
28 Nov 2016, 6:27pm
Lilith eased her stance a bit, but remained at guard by the access hatch.

"Hiya Bloodfeather," She replied cheerily, "Nice to meet you...uhh... Face to... Umm... Well, nice to meet you! Any dirty little secrets to share with me?" She added mockingly.

Hearing about the upgrades to the FDL model Lilith continued to smile. *Seems he really likes his ship. Here's hoping he doesn't give me cause to break it.*

"I never said I don't like them, just not a fan of them. I had one myself for a while. But in my line of work, it pays to be flexible and the Fer-De-Lance doesn't offer much in that sense. Hence I fly my Python, which reminds me... Bloodfeather, any chance you can see if those imbeciles on pad 20 have finished fixing my FSD?"
28 Nov 2016, 6:38pm
"I'll have a look," Bloodfeather said. "And no, no dirty secrets. None that would give you anything to hold over Isaiah's head, at least. Although... now that you mention it--"

"Ha...ha, okay Blood."

"--there was this one instance that I recall where he and Cait were--"

"Okay, that's enough." He laughed nervously, rubbing the back of his neck and shooting a glance at Lilith. "It... it's a long story. Don't ask. Not that you were going to."

Bloodfeather took a few moments before coming back with an answer to Lilith's inquiry. "The maintenance tag on your ship has been changed to 'in progress.' It does not give an indication as to how long it'll take or how long it's been since the maintenance crew started, however."
28 Nov 2016, 6:51pm
Lilith chuckled at the back and forth between the pair.

"You know, I could get used to this... Bloodfeather, I mean..." She replied.

Remembering the discussion she'd had with the foreman she thought to herself about how long he said the job would take.

"Right... Well if it's in progress, we have a maximum 4 hour wait until my ship is ready to go. That's assuming work started right now... and that they don't stop for 15 tea breaks..." She added that last part sarcastically.

She switched to a slightly more serious tone as she switched the topic of conversation.

"So... How do we play this? I doubt Glaboski knows I'm with you but we may have to assume someone else has kept an eye out and is relaying information." She said, still not 100% at ease inside the ship.
28 Nov 2016, 7:12pm
"I'll just shoot him a message via my slate and have him meet me here. I can hand off a data stick to him and say that you're in the forward cabin, and then you can do as you please." He raised his hand to make a point. "But please don't get blood everywhere. I have to clean that mess up and I don't want it looking like a crime scene."

"May I make a small suggestion?" Bloodfeather interjected.

"What?"

"I would conduct all of this business in the cargo hold. I can keep all the doors locked, no upholstery is in danger of being bloodstained, and there's a vast array of implements that can be used to make a point - if you catch my meaning."

Isaiah turned to Lilith, an eyebrow lifted.

"Sometimes she scares me," he said.
28 Nov 2016, 7:31pm
Lilith nodded in agreement.

"He'll probably want to see me before willingly entering the ship...." She pondered, "I'll stay in the quarters and keep myself amused. You can have one of those little drones transmit a camera feed as proof I'm on board. When you're ready, just come get me."

She chuckled at the idea of Isaiah scrubbing the floors after she'd torn Glaboski limb from limb.

"Don't worry, I have no intention of doing anything brutal. I just need to give him a scare. Let him know he can't get to me." She grinned, "With a bit of luck, maybe even convince him to quit his hobby. The sad fact of the matter is, he is a damn good surgeon. I'm not robbing the station of that. But right now, he thinks he's invincible. It's time that changed."

Thinking about her own cargo bay she figured there could be use for some of the stuff there.

"Bloodfeather? I presume you have control of some of the equipment in the bay? I may need your help to shake things up a bit." She added.
28 Nov 2016, 7:46pm
"Alright, that'll work. I'll start writing the message to Glaboski." He pulled his slate out, bringing up the contract information and Glaboski's details.

I have her and the data. But you'll need to come and get it. I don't want to make a scene out there in public. Pad 33.

"Certainly," Bloodfeather said confidently. "What do you need?"
28 Nov 2016, 7:52pm
Liliths heart skipped. This was it. She was going to be meeting Glaboski and find out once and for all if Isaiah was true to his word or not. Taking comfort in the fact she had her weapons she took some calming breaths.

"Nothing immediate. But if things go south, I'd like to know you have my back..." She said, "Mind you, does he know you have a ship AI of sorts?"
28 Nov 2016, 8:07pm
"Nope. I haven't had any contact with him since the initial exchange when I took the job."

Isaiah could sense her trepidation - it was compounded by his own. There were so many ways that this could go wrong. Glaboski could flout the entire deal and go straight past him, or worse. Lilith's life was in danger, and by choosing to side with her, his life was too.

But that's what I do this for. Getting on the right side of a cause, trying to help people rather than hurt them needlessly.

He was resolved to see it through.

"Listen. I know you have no reason to trust me. I know that if this were any other system and you were any other person, I might consider handing you off to the authorities. But Glaboski isn't the authorities, and you and I both know something about him doesn't add up." He fixed her gaze. "I want you to know that if things do get out of hand and he does try something, I'll have your back. I'm not going to let him do anything to you."
28 Nov 2016, 8:16pm
"I appreciate it... I really do... But you'll understand it doesn't make me feel any better about this whole thing." Lilith said. "Bloodfeather... When he arrives, keep quiet please. Don't let him know you exist... I'm going to need an ace up my sleeve and you're it ok?"

She wobbled on her feet a little bit before deciding what to do.

"Get that drone ready, I presume you have guest quarters? If nothing else, I'm going to have to compose myself for the big performance." She added with some resemblance of a grin.
28 Nov 2016, 8:26pm
"Of course. I'll stay in Isaiah's ear in the meantime," Bloodfeather said.

Isaiah retrieved the drones from his pocket and pulled one out. It whirred to life, then fluttered about the cockpit as Bloodfeather put it through its paces.

"We're good to go," she said.

Isaiah exhaled a long breath, then rose to his feet. "I'll show you to the forward cabin. Once I hear from Glaboski, I'll let you know."

He guided her back down from the cockpit and towards the fore of the ship, opening the door to the cabin. "Door code is 4845." He managed a wry grin. "Just in case you don't trust me and want to poke your head out to see if I'm still here."
28 Nov 2016, 8:55pm
"Ok... Thank you... I guess...." She said as she entered the cabin. Unsure what to do with herself, she perched herself on the end of the bed. Realising the possible implication she quickly stood up and wandered over to a chair instead.

Her nerves were frayed and she was in desperate need to sort that out. One question was on her mind, driving her insane. She'd concluded she was in the clear earlier but the closer the confrontation got, the more doubtful she was of that. It was definitely one thing she was going to ask him. Quite possibly the only thing that mattered to her at this point.

How far did he go?

"Any chance of a drink?? Non alcoholic this time." She asked, looking up at Isaiah.
