Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Guess I'm meeting your entire entourage at this rate." Lilith laughed nervously. "Those medics are surely bound to be here soon... What do we do about them?"

She picked up the chair she'd knocked over and sat down downoing the rest of her water to distract herself.

Heading up the ramp of No Data Available, Phisto made his way to his cabin.  Tears streaming at this point, he slid the door open and headed to his floor safe.  Kneeling down, he deftly flashed his right hand fingers across the numerical keypad while his free left hand took the die cast ship model out of his pocket.  Popping the safe open, he finally took a moment to wipe the tears with his now free right hand.

"You'll be safe here."

He slowly and cautiously laid the die cast ship model on a considerable pile of identical models already in the safe.  Closing the door, he quickly rose and sat back on his bed.  Starting to remove his flight suit,

"Data, would you kindly inform Starport Services we'll be renting this dock for several hours?"

Finished disrobing, he swung his feet up onto the bed, wiped his face one final time and closed his eyes.

"I'll deal with them. Say that I tried to incapacitate you but you got away. That should put a damper on things while we make our move on Glaboski."

"I have Cait on comms," Bloodfeather informed Isaiah. "Patching you in to her now."

"Well, well, well," Cait said, her voice clipped and measured. There were hints of an Imperial accent, but one could hear that the flat, forceful tones of the Federation were more prominent. "I see you're having fun on vacation without me. Did you get into trouble or is this one of those 'wish you were here' messages?"

"You know I wish you were here with me, Cait," Isaiah said. "Drinking, fucking, fighting, would've been a fantastic getaway."

"Mmmhm," Cait's voice went up in pitch slightly. It was something she always did when she was entertaining an idea. "You know you don't have to go all the way out there for that sort of thing. Plenty of pirates to take down here on the border with Kumo space."

"Needed a change of scenery, that's all," he said.

"The scenery here is just fine. Speaking of which, when are you coming back?"

"Actually, I was hoping for a favor."

"What kind of favor? The kind that puts you forever in my debt or the kind that I get to dangle over your head for other favors?"

"Both, maybe. I'm in a bit of a bind."

"Bind," Cait hesitated, making a low humming sound. "Binds are not good."

"I took a bounty but things have gotten complicated. Things aren't what they seem to be."

"Authority job?"

"No. Private contract. Someone wanted this person pretty badly. Didn't look right, so I took it and decided to investigate a little. There's some shenanigans going on here. Creepy doctor type wants a woman back for some reason. Seems she's got something that might or might not incriminate him in some unsavory activities."

"And I'm guessing you want my help."

"Yeah, that's the long and short of it."

Cait's smile was audible even over the comms. "Look at you, asking for my help. I thought you said you could handle things yourself?"

"Lives are on the line here, sweetheart," Isaiah said quietly, his tone serious.

"I hate it when you call me sweetheart." She didn't, actually - it was actually a soft spot for her. "You know you're going to owe me more than just a thank-you if I come up there, right?"

"You can take whatever you want from me after this is all over with."

"Oh, I intend to," Cait said, a hint of mischief in her voice. "What do you need me to do?"

"I need you to keep touch with Bloodfeather while I try to force this guy's hand. We're meeting in a public place to make the exchange."

"Sounds like a trap to me."

"Thus why I'm calling you. Another set of eyes and hands with a gun helps."

"Right. Okay. I'll be leaving shortly."

Isaiah was silent for several long moments, thinking about Cait - what if this did go south and something awful happened? Not just to Lilith, but to him as well? He hated the idea of there ever being a time where he felt like he might not come back, but the closer he'd gotten to Cait, the more he realized just how quickly things like that could have happened.

"Hey Cait?"

"Yeah?"

"Be safe, okay? Get here safe so I can make good on the whole fucking and fighting and drinking deal."

"I'll be fine. You will too. Be seeing you soon."

The k-cast cut off, and Bloodfeather sighed. "Two peas in an escape pod."

Isaiah rolled his eyes. "Bite me."

Lilith kept quiet the entire time, feeling like an intruder to what was, for brief moments, an intimate conversation.

"So...." She said sheepishly, "She sounds nice...."

She couldn't help shake a lingering feeling as though she had been poaching on someone elses man. Nothing had happened of course, not even close, but here she was in a small-ish cabin, after a few drinks, with a man who had seen her very vulnerable. She couldn't shake that vulnerability didn't mean intimate. She knew it in her head, but that didn't shake the sensation in the slightest.

"They'll want to search the ship you know, and if I'm supposed to have escaped you'll need roughed up..." She added cheekily.
29 Nov 2016, 11:30am
"Nice? Oh no, she's mean as all hell." Isaiah chuckled quietly, waving a hand dismissively. "I jest, of course. But yeah, if you'd pulled the trigger on me in the elevator, that's who you'd be answering to."

He sensed something off in Lilith's demeanor, the awkwardness of having listened in on the conversation. "Sorry if that was a little... weird." He shrugged his shoulders, rising to his feet and rubbing the back of his neck. "I didn't expect it to be as... suggestive as it was." He laughed, shaking his head. "Usually her idea of favors involves me collating intel reports for her while she sleeps in."

Strange though it was, doing that sort of thing gave him a sense of normalcy and happiness. Cait often handled the logistics side of Reach operations in the Pegasi Sector, doing more "homework" than actual flying. He'd spent more than one long night in her company, going over reports of Kumo Crew incursions into Imperial space, watching her as she stressed and spoke of her growing discontent with how the Empire was handling the Pegasi pirates. But seeing her asleep on the couch while he finished her work, it made him realize just how much he missed that sort of menial taskwork, and how much he enjoyed knowing it was relieving her of a source of stress.

"Anyway. Yeah. I guess I should have something to show the medics if I'm going to pass off the deception that you'd hightailed it." His face twisted into a scowl, eyes turning to her. "Please don't leave me with a concussion if you're going to take a swipe at me. I'd like to be able to see straight after all of this is over with."

Dark shapes flash. Streams of color. Fight. Flee. An explosion. Panic.

Phisto shot up from bed, sweat soaked, sucking in air, eyes wild.  Noticing the cool, familiar colors of his bedroom, he gripped his bed sheets tightly and focused on his breathing.

Inhale, count to four.  Exhale.  Count to four. Repeat.

Calming enough to get his bearings, he glanced at his floor safe. Satisfied in seeing it, he expertly began his post-sleep routine: strip the bed, sheets and previous flight suit into the wash unit, shower, fresh suit, consider breakfast options.

"Data, any good breakfast spots on this station?  Preferably something where I can get a morning cap?"  A moment passed as his ship computer collated the relevant data, "Ingaba?  Very well!" Exiting No Data Available at his typically brisk walking pace, he bee-lined for the nearest lift.

"Oh goody, I get to hit you at last!" Liith said jokingly, "I was thinking more of an ice pack to turn your cheek red with the cold, and maybe tear some clothes you don't care for. Throw some water over you to seem sweaty."

Shifting a bit on the chair, she began cracking her knuckles anyway then added,

"But if you really want a black eye, it would certainly relieve some of my stress." She added with a tongue in cheek tone, "I'd rather not cause you permanent damage, unless you give me reason to of course..."
29 Nov 2016, 4:50pm
Reiffis stepped into the elevator and stood at the back as he heard his data-pad go off. Pulling it out he quickly read it over "Ingaba? Can think of worst places to meet my contact." he thought out loud.

The doors were about to shut when he saw someone running towards him.

Pressing the buttons to stall the lift he stepped aside to let the person enter "Which stop are you needing?" he inquired as he put his data-pad back inside his jacket. He rested his hand on the hilt of his gun for the ease of mind.
29 Nov 2016, 5:07pm
Turning sideways to slide between the now re-opening doors, Phisto skipped into the lift. Moving to the back of the enclosure, he slipped his thumbs into his empty flight suit pockets and rested his back against the wall.

"If you'd kindly hit the button for Ingaba, I'd be much obliged." He nodded at the stranger, smiling politely.
29 Nov 2016, 5:22pm
Reiffis nodded back in acknowledgement to the Commander who joined him in the elevator and pressed the button.

"You're in luck. I'm off to the same stop." He leaned back against the wall and shook his head as some old elevator style music played through the speaker system.
"You would think we still lived in the 20th century with this music." he joked. "Mind if I pry and ask the reason for visiting Ingaba?"

He didn't really care why the guy was going there but it was much better to talk than travel and end up having to listen to that awful music.
29 Nov 2016, 5:38pm
Ah, this one wants conversation.

"I don't mind at all, friend.  Specifically, I'm finding myself in need of food and drink after a good, long sleep. More generally, the station seemed a good a place as any for a bit of vacation.  Already found what I was looking for, in fact!"

Phisto started tapping his right foot to the beat of the music. Grinning cheekily, he said "Don't be too hard on the 20th century.  They were just trying their best, I'm sure."

Found what he was looking for? What could he be looking for in this place?

"Ah, I'm here on business. Meeting someone at Ingaba." He became a bit more rested and crossed his arms. He didn't feel anything threatening about this guy.

He chuckled slightly as he noticed Phisto tapping his foot along with the music "Guess I can't be too harsh. I heard they had some decent food, unlike the slop they sell at some stations these days?"
29 Nov 2016, 6:12pm
"I suppose there were culinary benefits from only have to ship your wares mere kilometers instead of entire light years, yes. Hard to say, having been born just last century."

Phisto started to bop his head slighty.  This music wasn't half bad.

"I get the sense many people come here to meet others.  Saw one couple earlier act quite hostile to each other, go to the bar, and then come back from it friendlier than ever.  Maybe we'll get equally lucky!" popping a quick wink, he continued, "But business is hardly ever so pleasant, isn't it?"

29 Nov 2016, 6:38pm
"Indeed they were, I hear." he laughed. "However in defense of modern day tech we can now make food last longer that hours or days."

He listened in to what Phisto was saying. "Oh really? Sounds like it could be amusing. I'm at a bit of disadvantage in my business meeting. I am lost as to who my contact is, just an Alias." his hand rested on his gun once more but quickly calmed and moved his hand back down.

"Not always. I've had my own share of run ins with unpleasant people over the years. My apologies if I seem jumpy at times. Old habits die hard."
29 Nov 2016, 6:48pm
"I understand. "People" is often a synonym for "unpleasant."  Allow me to reassure you: I have a rule.  If I know a person, I significantly downgrade my chances of ever killing them. Besides, even if I did try, you'd be in your ship, out in the black.  Casual violence on stations like this is so..." Phisto looked up at ceiling, as if searching for his word choice there, " ...unpleasantly chaotic."

The lift slowed and stopped.  They had arrived.  Phisto stopped tapping his foot and made for the door.

"Good luck finding your alias.  For now, I beg you excuse me.  While my sleep was refreshing, I need to... " Phisto snapped his fingers several times, looking at the ceiling once more "...smooth out.  Perhaps I'll join you in the bar, later?"

Looking back down at his elevator friend, he warmly smiled.
