Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Cartlidge strolled through the pilot's market, subtly trying to avoid the solicitors here and there. The last time he let his guard down here, he ended up purchasing a rather overpriced bobble-head of an anaconda. Though he was unhappy about the amount of credits he ended up spending, he did admit to himself that the tiny ship was enjoyable to look at every now and then.

Stryker strode through the docks. He spotted Cartlidge, and quickly tossed the credit chip he had blackmailed back to him with a nod. Saying nothing else. The bodybuilder made his way up the service ramp to the Broken Bow. The ramp retracted and the door sealed behind him. He knew the ship was bugged and he had a plan for that.

Cartlidge caught the chip with ease but was utterly confused as to why it had been given back to him. Before he could ask Stryker walked away.
What was the point of all that then? he thought. At a loss for an answer, Cartlidge sighed before making his way to the vehicle bay that contained his ship.

"Follow it, Disable it, whatever... The warning is clear." Lilith spat. This hit too close to home for her not to say anything.

She exited the lift and her attention was drawn to the emergency broadcast playing on the monitors dotted around the corridoors. Unable to resist cracking a grin at the attention the Doctor was now recieving she made her way towards the passenger lounge, hoping to find the destinations for the ships Bloodfeather had just named and maybe... Just maybe... A hunch would lead her to the same ship as Glaboski. Assuming of course, that actually was where he was heading.
07 Dec 2016, 11:03pm
"Jesus, what's her problem?" Cait said under her breath, working through the preflight procedures - something Isaiah was very thorough about based on the number of items listed.

A text prompt appeared on the HUD, displaying a typed message from Bloodfeather. Her mother was a crewmember aboard a ship attacked by Imperial forces. She's after the killers, it would seem. It might be best to not push the issue with her but be mindful of it.

Cait sighed, gnawing on her lower lip as she read the message. It seemed like that was always the story with nearly everyone she'd met. Was there anyone in the galaxy who was happy and hadn't been touched by tragedy in some way? Or was that just part of the human condition?

"Hey," Cait said softly to Lilith. "I'm not killing or damaging or destroying passenger ships. That's not how I do things. I'm not going to get people mixed up in Glaboski's mess. There's enough people with sad stories and vendettas in the galaxy and I don't intend on creating more."

Lilith: Passenger Lounges
"Uh huh... I'm sure." Lilith said blandly not wanting to pursue it but feeling more intent on preventing Glaboski from embarking onto a transport ship. An lightbulb came on in her head as the broadcast continued on the monitors she'd been passing.

*Oh this is brilliant...* She thought as a large smile appeared on her face, pulling out her datapad and entering the contact information provided by the broadcast.

I have reason to believe Glaboski is attempting to head off station via public transport. I saw a man matching his description heading towards the docks roughly ten minutes ago. She typed in, sending a copy to Caits datapad too before voicing her reasoning.

"I presume you spotted the broadcast initiating a stationwide search for the Doc? The mesage I just sent, I sent it to the contact details on the broadcast. That really ought to slow him down if nothing else, right?" She said simply, a slightly cheerful bounce in her voice and step. The net was closing and she knew it.

Security Guard (Ship Docks)
A lone guard stood at the entrance to the pad. He was a rookie, hence he'd been given a simple duty. Guard a locked door. He should really have had a partner but there was an escaped mental patient on the loose, a near murder had occured not long before and their resources were being stretched very thin.

So here he was, stood in his crisp uniform, radio on his shoulder blade, Security Logo emblazoned on his chest and Automatic Weapon held across his torso in a relaxed stance, but ready to position into an actionable stance at a moments notice.

He'd been instructed that a Man and/or Woman might attempt to recover the ship and as a result the code had been changed. Of course, he knew that code, just in case entrance was required, but if it came to that he had also been instructed to call for backup. A large muscular man with cybernetic claw passed him by before entering a different pad, the guard had tensed up momentarily but relaxed as he'd made his way by, bringing with him a fresh draft of cool air that sent a slight shiver up his spine.

It wouldn't be long before the recovery team came to impound the ship and either dismantle it or sell it on. The longer it remained abandoned here, the greater the monetary loss it generated on the station. Admittedly, it hadn't actually been here very long. During training, he, himself had encountered ships that had been parked for months by Pilots that had moved on from their Sidewinders and purchased larger vessels such as Type-6 Transports, or even Anacondas. But apparently the owner of this vessel had caused some trouble before leaving, and since he or she had escaped, Station Administration was keen to exact some form of punishment on the pair.

"Security's going to be setting up checkpoints in no time," Cait said, perusing the message Lilith had pushed across to her. "Blood, just keep looking and scanning for him. If we can pin him down, that'll give us the best chance of finding him."

Cait knew that as the noose tightened, Glaboski would get more desperate - and crafty. There were plenty of pilots willing to haul someone in their cargo bay in a stasis pod, looking the other way, if it meant getting paid exorbitant amounts of credits. The increased security might help, but it wasn't going to be the thing that eventually caught him - they'd have to do that themselves.

"Look on the bright side," Cait added. "If we get him, you don't have to pay anyone for hauling him in."

Lilith: Passenger Lounge
"Meh... Money was never an issue really... But yeah I suppose." Lilith said, quite neutrally.

She was still considering her approach to the Doctor when she arrived at the Passenger Lounge. Crammed full of civilians of all walks of life, from tourists wearing loud, flowery shirts to businessmen in sharp, suits and ties. It was loud, busy and definitely the ideal hiding spot for someone not looking to draw attention to themselves.

In the corner, a man was playing 'Find the Lady' using a deck of cards. Lilith scoffed at the man, knowing full well it was a scam. You show the punters there are only three cards, one of which is a Queen of Hearts, place them face down, shuffle them and have them guess which of the three is the Queen. Of course, sleight of hand ensured that they never won. It was a trick that predated even the first ever moon landing in the 20th Century, yet somehow people still fell for it.

"I'll check the departure listings for Pads and Destinations. Bloodfeather, you free up some power to do whatever else you think will help track him down." Lilith said simply, "And Cait... When we get those drinks, I'll explain to you exactly why Isaiah saw fit to help me. If you still think I'm a simple guttersnipe afterwards, fine. We'll part ways, and our next meeting will be fair game. But at least then my conscience will be clear for him getting caught in this."

There was some remorse in her voice. She'd always worked alone, maintaining almost complete detachment from anyone that did her bidding. But Isaiah had gotten under her skin and now there was a small kevel of guilt for putting him into Glaboskis path, and sympathy for Cait as he was her partner in both the professional and personal sense.
08 Dec 2016, 11:29am
"Isaiah knew the risks," Cait said, growing quiet. She knew if Glaboski got off the station, she'd have to track him - but she didn't want to. She wanted to be at his side when he woke in recovery, but she was torn between doing what she did best and doing what she felt was only right.

"Blood, can you check on something for me when you get a chance?" Cait asked, rubbing her temples with her fingers. "Can you check on Isaiah's status for me?"

"Let me check," Bloodfeather answered. "They have him in intensive care at the moment. I don't have any more details than that to give you right now."

"So he's alive."

"For the moment, yes... hold on. I might have something. Citizen report, someone saw Glaboski disembarking from the 011 tram." There was a momentary pause as Bloodfeather searched for the tram schedules. "That's... the docks. I'm pulling feeds from cameras now. Focusing on the queues for the passenger ships."
08 Dec 2016, 2:22pm
Cartlidge slowed his pace as he reached his destination. Around the corner he noticed a lone guard, standing nonchalantly near the door to the vehicle bay that housed the Paladin. Keeping out of sight, he sat down against the wall.

"Ten, I see a guard at the door. Is anyone else posted inside?" he spoke into his earpiece.

"No, but if the roster is up to date, this guard is supposed to watch for any civilians trying to get access to the ship. Furthermore it seems that they've changed the code on the door lock. I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to get it from here," Ten replied from her place at the bar.

"Got it. I'll think of something."
08 Dec 2016, 5:51pm
Dr. Glaboski had slipped into the crowd and vanished among the throng of traveling humanity.

The patrons in the line leading into the Beluga Liner, Pōmaikaʻi,  were starting to become frustrated. A frazzled Steward was trying to explain the situation.

"The station is in a security lock-down." He said. "We have to verify that all passengers match up with their passports before boarding."

One overly obese man with an Imperial accent spoke up. "This is MY vacation your messing with. How dare you! Do you know who I am...." Other people in the line groaned and rolled their eyes.

For the first time in a long time, Dr. Glaboski felt vulnerable. He had taken it too far, and was now facing the possible consequence. He sat there, head down, fingers wrapped between each other. At first, there was a hint of remorse, and then anger. Seething rage. At his ex-wife and what she had done to him. Leaving him. She forced him to "create" other Susans in her image. And now, some bitch got a hold of his Susans. He was furious that the outside help he had hired turned on him. But a thin smile broke across his face. He had made some interesting discoveries probing around in that mans brains.

If I get out of this.... He thought, ...I would very much like to continue that work....but how? It was an entertaining thought, but the reality of his situation brought him back. He had to get off this station...

Lilith: Passenger Lounge
"Any help in narrowing down the possibilities would be great." Lilith said, "What do you think? A nice sunny moon with beaches and babes? Or black market doctoring with unlimited access to potential Susans?"

As she scoured the listings, one popped out at her, the The Pōmaikaʻi was delayed. While a few others had been delayed for varying reasons, minor malfunctions, booking errors, that sort of thing, this one gave no reason.

"Bloodfeather, any chance you can scrounge up a reason for the Pomakai, Pomkai... Oh for christ sake, I don't know how to pronounce it... Pom-eye-ka-ee? It's delayed but no reason given." She asked.

Security Guard: Ship Docks
The Guard shifted on his feet uneasily. Looking up and down the corridoor revealed nothing, but he was feeling little tenser than usual. Putting it down to nerves he cricked his neck and resumed his stance. A burst of static on his radio signalled a voice about to come through.

"Officer Branders, Status report?" Came his Commanders Voice

"All clear sir. Nothing to report." Branders responded

"No problem, I expect a report every 15 minutes. There's a number of intrusion softwares hacking our systems. They seem to be coming from multiple locations making them hard to trace. Could be that whoever owns that ship is on the station and is hoping to retrieve it" said the Commanding Officer

"Roger that sir, over and out" Said the guard. What he'd wanted to say was 'Send me backup then' but he'd learned a long time ago that his opinions didn't matter.
08 Dec 2016, 9:49pm
"The Pōmaikaʻi is being scrutinized by security forces," Bloodfeather said. "Many others are as well, but they're not in their departure window yet."

"That might be your best bet then, Lilith," Cait added. "If I were Glaboski I'd go for the ship that's leaving the soonest. That delay might give you the time you need."

"Sadly, our time is growing short," Bloodfeather continued, bringing up an alert notice on the HUD for Cait to see. "There's someone else in the station network and it's getting a lot of attention. Not a computer either, a person."

"Glaboski?"

"Uncertain. What I do know is that station security has noticed and we're on the clock as of this moment. We'll only have a limited window to work with before I have to disconnect entirely from the station network, otherwise we run the risk of being compromised."
08 Dec 2016, 10:32pm
Lilith: Passenger Lounge
"Pull yourself out if needed Bloodfeather. Don't need you being shut down remotely." Lilith said, heading towards the Terminal for the Pōmaikaʻi. Taking note of the frustrated passengers all waiting to board but instead being scrutinised by armed guards.

She scanned the seating area for the Doctor and... To her delight, spotted a familiar looking face.

"Guess who I just found ladies. Passenger lounge for the Pōmaikaʻi" She said a huge grin escaping her otherwise stoic façade, "Moving in now." Before waiting on a response she sidled over to where he was sitting and placed herself opposite him.

"Do you want to run again or shall we go somewhere private to talk?" She said, flipping her trenchcoat open partially to reveal her gun. Feeling her non verbal point ought to be made clearly enough.

Dr. Glaboski looked out the window of the waiting lounge he was sitting in. Craning his neck to look up across the hollow flight deck to the far opposite side he could see the top of a Beluga Liner. In fancy Hawaiian like style calligraphy, the ships name was proudly displayed Pōmaikaʻi. If he squinted hard enough the doctor could barely make out the line of people boarding the ship. He wondered if his pursuers were wasting their time over there, then looked at his chronometer.

Where the hell is he? He thought savagely. He's late... He paced for a moment then turned his attention the far off mail slot. A single black ship slipped through. He wasn't very versed in the make and models of the pleathora of ships, and he didn't really care. He watched it buzz closer and his heart skipped a beat as it flipped over and descended onto the pad directly in front of his waiting room. He heard the ship's landing struts to make contact and the hissing sound of gas escaping. The gang plank extended and the outer hatch opened...

Meanwhile, in the waiting room for the Pōmaikaʻi a man looked up at a woman who made some outrageous demand about "running" and a "private talk." Totally perplexed, he looked up from his pad. "Excuse me?" He asked, then spotted a woman with a child of 8 or so. He stood up and waved them over. He gave her a kiss and walked away arm in arm with her. The child skipping in toe.

"What was that about?" The wife asked.

The man just shrugged. "Who's ready for a vacation!"
