Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I must point out that Cait's orders carry the same weight as Isaiah's. They both tend to make use of... amenities aboard the ship. That said, no offense taken at all. I couldn't care less anyway."

Cait wore a self-assured smirk as she followed Lilith along, but it was quickly banished when her mind drifted towards darker thoughts. At that moment, her only concern was getting Isaiah back and making sure he was safe - but if he wasn't, what then? Her brow furrowed, her heart began to race.

Don't think about it, Cait. Pull yourself together. Get him back. Then you can chew him out for all of this.

Bloodfeather continued: "I'll push a message through the transaction server. Hopefully Glaboski still has his slate on his person."
01 Dec 2016, 11:50pm
"C'mon Bloodfeather... Gimme something for Petes sake..." Lilith said slightly exasperated, "I thought we were becoming friends."

Turning the corner, pad 20 came into view and she approached the door and punched in the code. The doors slid open to reveal the vessel, this time devoid of the connecting pumps and cables that had decorated the hull during her last visit. The foreman was still present though, as were a few others tidying up various tools.

"All done then?" Lilith asked the foreman.

"Yup, just need to sign over payment" He replied, clearly surprised that she wasn't biting his head off like last time. He held out the pad for her.

"So I'm clear to go now?" She replied, pressing her credit chip to the pad, and watching it light up as 'payment accepted'.

"Yup, soon as you're ready. See ya miss." He replied, tipping his safety helmet.

Walking up to the access ramp, Cait in tow she stopped at the bottom and turned to face her with a stern look in her eyes.

"Hear that? I'm free to go. Just one request to Flight Control and I'm gone." She growled, "You've established that I'm just a simple guttersnipe. A piece of crap you stepped on by mistake. So, you've failed to appeal to my good side in any way. I have a reason to help Isaiah. He's there because he tried to help me. But, well, I don't have any obligation to help him. I operate alone. Have done for the most part since I left Sol. So I put it to you, nice and simple so you can understand it."

She spoke slowly and deliberately, with sarcasm oozing from every word.

"Why...Should...I...Help...You??" She smirked.
02 Dec 2016, 12:15am
"Help me? No. You'd be helping yourself. See, the only thing keeping me from turning you in for every single bounty on your head right now is the fact that Isaiah stuck his neck out for you. I hate it, but that's the kind of person he is. He obviously thought enough of your predicament that he'd risk his own life to protect you. And if you have any ounce of honor in that little body of yours, you'd understand what kind of person would do that for a stranger."

Cait stepped in close to Lilith, locking eyes, letting a few moments of silence pass to accentuate her point. "You can walk away right now and leave and never return. And if Glaboski is carving him up right now, you've left him to a terrible fate. If that's the case, and if that's who you really are, then get on. I'll go and kill Glaboski myself."

"But I promise you this: whatever horrors Glaboski visits upon Isaiah, I'll visit upon your head tenfold. It won't be about your bounties, Lilith, it'll be because you had a choice to help someone who offered their life in exchange for yours, and you were selfish enough to let them do it."

Her eyes moistened at the thought of losing Isaiah, and though she tried to hide it, she could not stop the tears at the corner of her eyes. "Don't do it for me. Do it for yourself. Do it for him."
02 Dec 2016, 12:40am
Lilith rolled her eyes at Caits rantings. This was the second time she'd sat through this whole 'Save your soul' styled garbage. Funnily enough, the first time was from the very man at the centre of the discussion at hand.

"So, basically what you're saying is, despite being just a petty, scruffy criminal. You're plan is to appeal to my sense of honour and decency?" She scoffed, "Yeah, that's smart... You might as well have called me a virgin hooker you imbecile!!!"

She turned on her heel and stomped up the access ramp. Closing it behind her to stop Cait following her up. She was hoping to give the impression she was leaving, but instead she went straight to her quarters and opened up her hidden compartment. Retrieving the data stick she turned it over in her hand, examining it as though the memories inside would somehow transmit through her skin and into her brain. Of course, she knew fine well what was on it, so such an effect would have been completely unnoticed.

"Bloodfeather, if Cait hasn't already run off crying, could you kindly inform her she needs to stay put?" She asked solemnly as she inserted the memory unit into her datapad. Instantly, it lit up, informing her that the memory was being read and within a second, all the pictures were there. She sat for a moment, scrolling through them. All of them dark haired, all of them wearing the same shade of lipstick, all of them unconscious. Then she came to her own image and her heart froze momentarily.

Recomposing herself, she made her way back to the access ramp and hit the switch to reopen the door. This time, she had the datastick with her as she descended the ramp.

Cait fumed as Lilith went back up the ramp, already coming to terms with the reality that she'd have to do this herself. She was angry - borderline hysterical. She turned away from the ramp, fists clenched, striding towards the corridor with full stride.

"Blood, get me everything you have on the station layout, specifically for the medical wing," Cait said.

Of course. What did you honestly expect from a criminal like her? She's nothing more than a two-bit fiend and--

"Wait there Cait, she's coming back," Bloodfeather assured her.

Cait stopped halfway across the docking bay, looking back at the Spearhead. Despite herself, there was a moment where her heart leapt in her chest, hoping that maybe the appeal had worked.
02 Dec 2016, 1:09am
Lilith stomped towards Cait, still staring absolute daggers at her and holding an absolute death grip on the datapad. So tight was her grip, she was pretty sure the poor thing was in danger of cracking. Fortunately it survived the journey and she thrust it right into Caits chest.

"Here!! Have a look and tell me I have no intention of helping Isaiah!!" She practically shouted, "Go on!!! And feel free to tell me how dishonourable and unrespectable I am!!!"

Standing back a bit she folded her arms and scowled at her.

"Once you're done... I'll ask again... Give me a reason to help you and specifically you!!" She spat the last sentence. Then took a deep breath while Cait examined the pad.

"Bloodfeather... Any luck on establishing communications?" She asked softly, having no issue with the computer in the slightest.
02 Dec 2016, 1:51am
She looked down at the pad, the images. Her demeanor shifted as she sorted through them, finally coming to Lilith's picture. She winced, handing the pad back to her, turning her back on Lilith to compose herself.

"I don't have a reason for you to help me," she said softly. "But the man that did those things to the women in those photos - the man that did things to you - has taken someone that I love very much, and right now he's doing gods know what to him so that he can try and get to you. Isaiah isn't a bounty hunter in the same way that I am. He's too much of an idealist, has too many scruples about killing for the wrong cause. That's why he's doing this. I hate that he sees some redeeming quality in you because I know you're nothing more than a criminal, but it's because he sees that in people that I love him."

Cait turned around, tears in her eyes. "You don't have to help me. I'm not asking for it. But I am begging you, pleading with you to help me get him back. You want something in return? Glaboski's head on a plate. That's what I'm willing to offer."

Meanwhile, Bloodfeather checked the status of the contact message pushed to Glaboski's slate. "Nothing yet, Lilith."
02 Dec 2016, 2:18am
Lilith clicked off the pad and disconnected the memory stick.

"A simple please would have sufficed." She snarked, "I don't want his head. It irks me somewhat but, as I've said to Isaiah, he's a brilliant doctor. The proof? Here's a bullet wound he fixed up." She pulled her top down her left shoulder blade, revealing a faint white mark where she'd been shot previously. It was still clearly a bullet wound, being slightly circular but was otherwise healed up very cleanly.

"What I want, is for him to learn he is not invincible. He thinks his position means he's untouchable and I have the unfortunate task of proving to him otherwise." She said softly, "It scares me too. I can't just lure him into an alley and pull the trigger because all I have are those images. I don't know if he... I don't.... I have to ask him..."

She was takin deep breaths now to keep calm.

"Now. If you have any shred of dignity left, you'll stop begging and I'll pretend I didn't see it happen. But you will stop treating me like a common as muck convict. I have reasons for my life choices. Just because you neither know, nor understand them, does not invalidate them." She said, in a strange blend of venom and reassurance, "To me, you're just an opportunistic money grabber who cares not who she kills for that money. But undoubtedly you'll insist otherwise. Do I make my point clear?"

02 Dec 2016, 2:38am
"I don't deny it," Cait said. "I've done this for nineteen years. It's what I'm good at." Thoughts crept into her mind, of the assignment that ultimately led her to meet Isaiah. Her mood darkened, and she lowered her head. "But you need to understand that nothing matters to me more than making sure Isaiah is safe. He's..."

Damnit. Stop.

"Never mind. I'm done talking. We need to get up to the medical wing and find where they have Isaiah so we can get this over with and move on with our lives."
02 Dec 2016, 2:56am
"I don't deny it, she says after labelling me the cold blooded criminal." Lilith rolled her eyes at the statement.

She sighed, and patted herself down ensuring all her weapons were still secured in place, adjusting the one on her thighas it had begunto work itself loose during her time crawling through the Bloodfeathers maintenance tubes.

"Right, we'll head up to the Medical Ward, but we aren't making a move until we establish contact. In fact... We might be in luck.... There's a possibility of having a staff outfit stashed somewhere if you fancy some espionage?" Lilith asked, slightly jokingly.
02 Dec 2016, 3:12am
"Go on," Cait said, gesturing for her to continue her line of thought. "You have an idea, let's hear it."

Truth was, Cait wasn't big on taking the cautious route, not in this case. Not with something of immeasurable value on the line. She took a look down at herself and realized she needed to change into something less obvious - an armored Remlok suit didn't blend in well.

"I need to go back to the Bloodfeather regardless. I need to change out and gather a few things that might help us," she said, turning towards the corridor. "Explain to me on the way."
02 Dec 2016, 3:29am
"Well, quite simply, if the uniform is still there and if I can somehow lure Glaboski away from Isaiah, you might be able to sneak in and get Isaiah out of there." Lilith said calmly. "The issue for you is going to be in finding him, but there's always the chance Glaboski will cut him loose the instant he thinks he has me."

She thought for a moment about what she was doing. Basically offering herself up as trade for a man who had been set out to capture her, and for the benefit of a woman who would sooner slit her throat than become friends with her. *Why can't something just be simple for fucks sake* she mentally groaned.

"Although this will be much easier if that damned Doctor would let us establish communications with him..." She said out loud, "Bloodfeather, if he doesn't answer by the time we are ready to move into the Medical Ward, is there any chance you could put the image of Susan onto the interior screens? The actual Susan that is. Maybe with a message requesting the attention of the good Doctor? Someone's bound to notice that..."
02 Dec 2016, 4:53am
As the last of the passengers filed out of the Queen’s Dance Beluga liner, a thin man with greying hair steps down the ramp.  His posture is erect and proud, yet his approach tentative, pointing to his unfamiliarity with the surroundings.  As he takes a deep breath the smells of the docks wash over him.  He pulls up the hood of his robes over a white skullcap with black trim.  He wears the garb of a shepherd of souls, yet not of a style familiar to those that he now ministers to.  His grey-white robes are at the same time functional and a statement to the world of his nature.  His only identifying insignia, a black double octagon emblazoned on the chest of his robes.

It is time to move on and begin what he has come here to do, so he takes his first steps on this station and considers his approach.  There are so many in this system to reach, yet he is only one person…and the least of them.  Will they listen to his message?  Will they even allow him to give it?  The next few days will determine much.  Walking into the terminal he rejoins his fellow travelers.  They are mustering around the information booths and Pilot’s Market, looking at the wares that are being hocked or searching for answers regarding where to go next.

It is as good a place as any to begin.

Crossing his arms by placing them in the wide sleeves of his robes he steps into the middle of the noisy throng.

“Why have you come here?” said the shepherd, his parade voice belying his former days as a military man.  Those around him barely noticed, so he said louder, “WHY HAVE YOU COME HERE?”  Now some of the curious stopped and looked, but not with true interest. They looked at the shepherd with mild confusion, or simple derision.  They were going about their normal day, why should they be interrupted by this person?

“You come and buy trinkets, gifts you do not want with money you do not need.  I come with a message!  It is the message of Pleiades; the message of the Thargoids; the message of the Faithful; the message of the Angels of Heaven!  Repent from your ways of corruption and deceit, for the Apocalypse comes.  And it comes not in the form of fire or ice or plague or disease.  It comes in the form of what you call Thargoids; what I call the Angels of Heaven, because they bring the message of our doom.”

More people now stopped to stare at this man.  Is he a lunatic?  Is he a threat?  What is he talking about?

“The Angels of Heaven have visited us in our past; giving us a warning of our impending doom; but we have not headed their message.  Now we find their ships in the Pleiades Nebula, a sure and undeniable sign of their existence and the warning of their final coming!  It is only a matter of time before they return to take the vengeance of the divine on our lives.  Now is the time to repent and see them for who they truly are; not invaders to be fought, but agents of the Divine who will spare the faithful.  So it is written.”

With that he gathered himself and began to walk towards the terminal’s exit, but before he reaches it there is a tug at his robes and he turns to face three fearful looking locals.  The nearest of them finally finds the words to speak and says “we want to know more”.

The shepherd takes a rare moment to smile slightly and simply says, “come with me.”
02 Dec 2016, 5:08am
"It would be possible, but as I said earlier, the security protocols for the medical ward is different from other areas of the station. I could try brute force, but that's going to attract attention. I would recommend biding our time until and unless Dr. Glaboski does not heed our request," Bloodfeather said. "I've pushed another request to his slate in the meantime."
02 Dec 2016, 3:38pm
"Yeah... I know... I just thought maybe the monitors wouldn't be as protected as the security feeds." Lilith said dismissively, "Don't do anything that might compromise yourself alright Bloodfeather?"

She kept in step with Cait as they made their way back to the Fer-De-Lance, paying little heed to the man announcing their impending doom.

"You, know... I recall an old Earth Myth that the world was supposed to end in what... 2012?? Something about an ancient calendar ending... And I mean ancient even by those standards." She scoffed, "Some things never bloody change do they?"
