Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Lilith: Passenger Lounge
*Shit...* Lilith thought. Slightly embarrassed, she got up and moved on swiftly.

"Uhh.... False alarm." She said to Bloodfeather. Clearly this entire escapade was getting to her and she was beginning to see Glaboski everywhere.

"I don't think he's boarding this liner. I think it's a cover meant to throw us off." She added in frustration, "Given the added security on public transport..." She fisted her eyes, scouring her brain for possibilities she wandered towards the viewing window and stared out.

Glaboski could be on board any of the vessels leaving the station and she was powerless to stop it. Punching the glass with the side of her fist she ignored the strange looks she was getting from the other tourists and other travellers crowding the lounge.

"He might be looking into private vessels then. Might try and pay off a smuggler to get him off the station..." Cait's voice trailed off as she racked her brain, trying to think of any other possible escape routes. "He could even stow away on a cargo ship if he has a Remlok."

There were too many moving parts now, too many things to think of and consider. Cait swore under her breath, feeling just as helpless as she imagined Lilith must have felt. She knew she needed to stay aboard the ship in case they did get a positive ID on something that was leaving the station, but it felt... wrong.

I should be out there too. No... I should be with Isaiah.

"I'm going to have to disengage from the network, Lilith," Bloodfeather said. "We know he's in the docking bay, that much we can glean from the reports, but it's hard to say which part of the bay he'll be in. If we still had Isaiah's microdrones, I could keep searching for him without using the station network, but I can't activate them remotely."

Cait seethed quietly, her hands curling into clenched fists. "If you find him Lilith... I'll come to meet you. I have a few words for the 'good doctor.'"

"Jacob I've got a problem," Ten said suddenly while Cartlidge was still deep in thought.

"What is it?" Cartlidge asked.

"I think I set something off because the server is trying to kick me out. I don't know why it wasn't this sensitive before. Maybe someone else is messing with the security feed as well and the two of us working made it too obvious."

"Do you think they'll be able to trace you?"

"No, but I didn't get the code either."

"It's fine. I've got an idea. Can you get remote access to the ship's computer and set off its security alarm?"

"As long as they haven't disabled everything. Give me a minute," Ten concluded. Cartlidge stood up to get ready."
09 Dec 2016, 3:46pm
The pilot of the unknown ship, wearing a Remlock suit walked down to the end of the gangplank and waved the doctor onward.

Dr. Glaboski did a "duck and run" his feet clanking against the metal of the plank as he made his way to the interior of the Diamond Back Explorer." The pilot followed him in closing the door. "Felix McDowell?" He asked the doctor.

"Yes." The doctor lied.

"Take a seat in here." He pointed to a crate.

"In there?" The doctor asked."

"Yes, in there. Gotta mask your bio signs as much as we can...." The pilot explained as the Doctor climbed in. The lid slid over and sealed the doctor in.

The pilot made his way to the cock pit. He looked over at the controls and requested departure. He did a bit of electronic scrambling confusing the signal from his ship to that of another ship. A few moments later he was cleared for departure. The ship lifted off and and slid through the mail slot having spent less then 10 minutes in station.

He made his first jump and when the star came into view, he called up his communication pane. He typed a simple message "I have him. Will make a fueling stop in Akbakara, Fairbairin Platform......"
09 Dec 2016, 5:29pm
"Warning! Security breach detected!" an automated voice bellowed from the impounded ship, followed by an obnoxious ringing noise. It wasn't particularly loud, just loud enough for the noise to cut past the door the guard stood in front of.

Lilith: Passenger Lounge
Standing staring out at the ships coming and going, as her breath fogged up the glass her pad beeped alerting her to a message.

"Cait, you know you can just... Oh!" She began to chastise before reading the message. Looking around first amongst the bustling crowds then back out towards the ships. Hoping to catch a glimpse of the messenger, and maybe the Doctor. Frowning, she looked back at her pad. *Akbakara, Fairbairin Platform....*

"Bloodfeather, any chance you can trace the source of the message that just came through to my pad?" She asked, knowing it was likely a fools errand, "Cait... We have good news and bad news, and no way to confirm if they're fact or fake."

She turned to make her way to her own ship, having made up her mind to follow the lead regardless. Knowing full well it would probably get her a hurl of abuse she picked her next words carefully.

"I have someone informing me he has Glaboski and to meet him at Fairbairin Platform, Akbakara," She took a breath and continued, "I'll follow... You stay here." Entering the corridoors of the ship docks she followed the directions to pad 20. Awaiting the inevitable scolding she was going to get from Cait.

Branders (Guard): Ship Docks
Branders nearly dropped his gun in surprise at the horrible racket that was bursting out through the doorway. Quickly he turned and punched in the code to enter the landing bay. The door slid open, and despite his rookie status, his training kicked in.

He shouldered his gun and raised it to eye level, scanning the entire bay. There were plenty of hiding spots for any hostiles, so he briefly turned away and hit the doors lock. As it slid shut with a hiss he took comfort knowing that the only escape was now closed.

Pulling his radio to his mouth he clicked on and opened communications.

"Sir, Branders here, security alarm sounding off, requesting backup" He spoke clearly into the radio, including the pad number for clarity as he returned his hand to his barrel and moved slowly anbd carefully further into the bay.

"Show yourself now, hands in the air and we can settle this peacefully!!" He called out. "I have authority to open fire!!"

Noticing the guard jump in shock, Cartlidge peeked around the corner to watch the guard punch in a few numbers into the key pad.

"Three... Two... Seven... Four... one," he whispered to himself. He watched the guard walk in and shut the door behind himself. "Awesome. Ten, you can shut off now," he said into his earpiece. A moment later the ship's alarm fell silent once again. Now he just had to deal with the guard himself. Quietly Cartlidge stood up and walked over to the keypad, his right hind tightly holding the pistol in his pocket.
09 Dec 2016, 9:20pm
Cait was about to protest the idea when she stopped herself long enough to think about it - she really didn't want to leave the station, because it meant leaving Isaiah behind and alone. Although frustrated that Glaboski had slipped away, she had to remind herself that this wasn't necessarily her fight either. The tables had turned; Glaboski was on the run, Lilith was safe, for the most part - but if the message she'd received on the datapad was a hoax, it might have also been a trap.

"I can verify that the message came from a pilot named Rex Castro, but as to a definite location, I couldn't say. Not within the station at least," Bloodfeather informed Lilith.

Cait chewed on her lower lip. I really shouldn't care whether or not she runs off chasing after this guy. It's out of my hands anyway. She's going to do what she wants.

"You know if you run after him, he could be pulling you right into a trap," Cait said finally. "There's too many unknown variables, and with no one watching your back out there..." her voice trailed off.

Branders: Ship Docks
The alarms shut off, but Branders guard didn't falter. He had something to prove but was going to make sure his job was done properly. After a moments silence he clicked his radio on again.

"Branders Reporting, still no sign of intruders, alarm shut off but still requesting backup. Please acknowledge request " He said, voice shaking slightly but remaining professional. Still scanning the landing bay for signs of a presence.

"I say again, surrender now or  I will shoot on sight!" He bellowed. Hoping his volume wouldn't betray his confidence.

Lilith: Ship Docks
Lilith was taken aback at the concern in Caits voice. Especially in contrast to the rebuttal she had been expecting.

"You stay with Isaiah. Tell him thanks." She said, "If it's a hoax, you're still here to continue searching. If not, I'll send the git your regards." By this point she was approaching her pad when she spotted the man who'd hospitalised her crouching around a corner. She grabbed his collar and pinned him to the wall.

"You are lucky I'm busy... Next time, I'll be sure to have a clear schedule." She sneered through gritted teeth. Releasing his collar and storming off. That's twice she'd bumped into him since the grenade incident. She was sincerely hoping for a third meeting with him, preferably with that strange woman at the same time.

Punching the code into the doorway, she entered the landing hatch and boarded the Spearhead and began the process of undressing before pulling on her Remlock Suit.

"Unknown variables are my specialty, you've seen my rap sheet after all." She added with a smile, knowing Cait couldn't actually see her.

"Assume he's still out there unless you hear from me again. You have my contact details, you know how to find me." Lilith bit her lip at the thought of adding the next bit, "I hope Isaiah recovers, and when I get back we can go for that drink."

With that she recieved authorisation to depart the station, so she ignited the engines and began her ascent from the pad and began her departure from the station.

"If you run into trouble, let me know," Cait said. Why did I just offer to help her? A little while before, she'd wanted to kill Lilith. But in light of what had happened, and what she'd learned about Lilith's situation, she found a small part of herself that sympathized with her.

Don't forget what she is. If the circumstances were different, she might have turned on you...

But she didn't. No, she actually stuck around and helped me find Isaiah. That has to count for something, as much as I don't want it to.

She stared out of the canopy at the bulkhead at the opposite end of the hangar, part of her mind still struggling to come to terms with what had transpired over the last few hours. Everything was quiet now; even Bloodfeather had gone silent now that Lilith had departed the station. It was unsettling. When Glaboski was still on the station, she had something to focus on, something to keep her mind occupied. Now she had to confront the reality that awaited her in the medical ward.

"Okay Blood, let's shut it down," she said, methodically working through the ship's shutdown checklist.

"Will you be going to see Isaiah now?"

"Yes. Send his room number to my slate."

"What about Lilith?"

"If she sends word back, pass it along to me as well."

"Certainly."

Satisfied that everything was in order, Cait rose from the pilot's chair and went back to the forward cabin to change back into her normal attire.
10 Dec 2016, 5:52pm
As Cartlidge motioned to walked over to the door someone grabbed hold of him and started to speak. It was the woman that had blackmailed her earlier. Before he could react, she finished speaking and walked off. Letting out a sigh, he looked down at the pistol he had aimed at her stomach during the confrontation. Now aiming it at the woman's back as she walked away, he considered it for a moment before deciding against it, turning back to what he was doing.

Cartlidge put in the code and let the door slide open, hugging the outside wall in case the guard was watching the door. Hopefully he'd be able to do this the usual way.
10 Dec 2016, 7:03pm
Branders was now by the boarding ramp of the Fer-De-Lance aiming his weapon upwards. The hatch was still sealed shut and he was about to make his way up to clear the vessel when a familiar hiss drew his attention back to the doorway. Turning to face the entrance to the landing pad he raised his weapon and aimed it at the opening.

Given that only security knew the code, he had assumed it was his requested backup but given that the entrance remained empty, his instincts told him otherwise. He returned to his radio once again.

"Branders here at the Fer-De-Lance Registered as Paladin. Still requesting backup and acknowledgement of request. Entrance is now opened by unknown persons. This request is to be treated as urgent, please respond ASAP". He said quietly, so as not to tip off whomever had opened the door.

Taking cover by one of the struts, he crouched and resumed aiming at the doorway.

"Announce yourself and enter slowly, hands where I can see them, or I will open fire." He yelled towards the posdible intruder. Was this going to be his first gunfight or just a false alarm. His adrenaline pumped in anticipation of the former but he was sincerely hoping it was the latter.
11 Dec 2016, 4:17am
"Seems a little jumpy," Cartlidge muttered into his earpiece. "Did you find anything on the guy before the server kicked you out, Ten?"

"Yes, It would seem that the guard has only been on the job for a few weeks. Perhaps you can use that to your advantage?"

"Already on it." Cartlidge turned his attention back at the door. "Oy! I'm not gonna walk in there, just to have you accidentally shoot me! What was your name again? Branders, or something? What's going on in there?!"
11 Dec 2016, 5:04am
"I asked first!!" Shouted Branders back through the doorway, "No one has access to this scrap heap without clearance from Security. It's impounded and is now the property of Citi Gateway Administration to do with as they see fit!"

He didn't expect whoever this was to actually comply with his instructions but he'd be damned if he wasn't going to do his job properly regardless. Suddenly a crackle from his radio caught his attention.

"Backup is on it's way Branders. Apologies for delay in response. It seems whoever was hacking the systems blacked out comms on their way out. ETA 5 minutes, over?" Came the voice of his commander.

"Roger that, Over and Out" He responded.

"Hear that?!? Backup is on it's way. Leave now and I'll put it down to a misunderstanding or malfunction. Your choice!!" Branders shouted back to the door, "I assure you, if you come through this doorway, it won't be an accidental shooting!!"

The thought of backup on it's way had given hm a surge of confidence. All he had to do was stall the intruder and everything would be fine. It's not lie he could get anywhere even if he did getaboard the ship. It was still in lockdown... Right?
11 Dec 2016, 4:26pm
Commander Reiffis made his way off the elevator with his female companion close behind. They had ended up stuck in there for numerous hours as the damn thing broke down on its decent. He looked about and made his way to hanger 32 to board his ship. He hated delays and too much time had already passed.

His female companion didn't seems amused by been stuck in the elevator with him and knowing she would be spending countless hours with him in his Python made it a little worst for her. If she had gone for a luxury liner for her journey, it would have created too much suspicion for her. She needed Reiffis to drop her off in the Sol system. Bit risky for her and him as they were both known to be allied with the Empire.
