Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Amar awoke to a small but poignant alarm going off. Proximity alarm, He shrugged, feeling groggy after emptying most of his liquor cabinet. Sniffing the air, he caught a wiff of a foul odor. After a minute, he realized the odor was originating from his person. The alarm was still softly calling throughout the ship. First things first! The three S's (Shit, Shower, and Shave).

A couple of minutes in the shower rejuvenated him, and although the effects of the alcohol had not quite worn off, he felt much more himself. He stepped over to the mirror, and saw the first beginnings of a beard. I might let it grow this time. He tossed the towel into one of the empty bins, and then quickly changed into dark green pants, an olive undershirt, and a matching green jacket with camouflage highlights. He meandered into the galley, everything was clean and orderly, exactly the way he had left it. Amar opened one of the cabinets and pulled out a package of instant coffee. As disgusting as it was, the mixture would just about wake the dead. It did not take long for the mix to dissolve in the mug of water, and swallowing with dread anticipation, Amar put back the glass. Strange, after the first cup, I could drink this stuff all day... This was probably because every single taste bud in his mouth had just been pulverized by the strange mixture. He made himself another cup.

The alarm continued to sound, so Amar ventured to the bridge. He sat at his chair, and began going through all the systems. It took him a minute to find the source of the alert. AHA! The alarm was someone requesting access to the loading bay. Might as well have a look. But, before he boarded the lift to the loading bay, Amar strapped on a LI-73 energy sidearm. His recent experiences made him regret ever leaving home without one.

Stepping off the lift, he found the bay light control, and then proceeded to open the bay doors. "WARNING: STAND CLEAR OF BAY DOORS" Blared the ship computer. Slowly the ramp extended after. Amar stood at the top of the ramp, sipping on the galaxy's worst cup of coffee. At the foot of the ramp, to his surprise stood Markus Omni, beside him all of Amar's personal items from his old office and apartment. He sat the cup down on the control panel, and walked to the bottom of the ramp.

"Markus! Long time no see." Amar said jokingly, as he went to collect his personal items from the bottom of the ramp. "Still looking for that ride to Nanomam? I might be heading that way myself, rumors are there's a lot of good merc work for freelancer's out that way."
23 Jan 2017, 7:49am
Standing nearly eye to eye Markus crossed his arms.

"Yes, I am still looking for a ride. Considering that you ran off after some lunatic, my previous supposed ride was last seen with his arm hooked around a girl heading to his ship. I'd take that avenue is out the picture now."

Markus stuck a thumb out directed to the luggage and other materials.

"You get fired or something?"

Wincing, Jemine gasps at the thought of the pain Stryker must have endured in cutting off his own arm.

"How horrible!" she says. "I'm not sure I could have ever summoned up the courage to do a thing like that, even to save my life."

She touches Stryker's arm, her fingers tenderly stroking the area where flesh merged with cybernetic, where human became artificial.

"This Jubei fellow," continues Jemine. "I take it he was the one who scooped your escape pod. Does he also work for Black Omega?"
23 Jan 2017, 3:00pm
Amar shrugged, "They prefer, 'Opportunity to find Employment Elsewhere,' but yeah, same difference. Turns out, chasing someone hyped, crazy, or on drugs, that creates a hostage situation, is not on the station priorities." He picked up one of the boxes. "Welcome aboard. If i recall correctly, you had a Tiapan that needed to be transported." He remarked as he walked up the ramp. "We can store it in the rear bay. You can put your personal items in here. Just keep them to the left side under the stairwell, I plan on loading a shipment of supplies to trade."

Amar set the box down and turned around for another, He looked up at the faded paint, FSS EAGLE"S FLAME - MORS VICTORIA! She had flown him halfway across known space and back. And the best years are still before her, he thought as he continued to load his personal items.
23 Jan 2017, 3:38pm
Stryker watched the finger trace around the interface of flesh and machine.

He spoke softly.

"Ya, he did. Which of course I'm grateful for. But no, he doesn't work for Black Omega. I don't know him to well, but he works for the Empire. Quiet bloke. But he seemed quite centered."

He shrugged his strong broad shoulders.
23 Jan 2017, 5:37pm
"Hm. Well I'm sorry that had to happen." Markus said, his frown softening.

Seems like he's already payed for his mistake with me. Markus thought regretting his previous tone.

"Thank you." He inclined his head slightly. "I'll see to it that a trade administer will help with my belongings. I'll have everything transferred within the hour. Do you have a second that I can talk to in the case you're not here when I return?"
23 Jan 2017, 10:02pm
Ah the vice-commander... When Amar had been freelancing for the Fleet his old war buddy Jansen DeWilder had flown as his honest and trustworthy second. Then, when he joined the Station Security, DeWilder and he parted ways. This was one of the many items to be taken care of before the Flame would be ready to depart. Amar's mental checklist now included: Contacting DeWilder, to see if he was up for a bit of freelancing, finding a ships doctor, finding a Navigator, recruiting an engineer, and recruiting a pilot. He already had several names in mind, but he needed to double check.

"I should still be here when you get back. As far as a second goes, he should be here in a couple of hours." he paused and then remembered, "Markus, here." He said as he rummaged through an old locker. He then tossed Markus a pass. "That will get you on and off the ship, and give you access to this bay, the rear bay, and Decks 2-3." Carefully, Amar then locked the locker. "You can give that back when we dock in Nanomam."

He then went back to loading his personal items. Finished. He thought. Leaning back he took a drink from his cup of coffee, and immediately regretted it. He looked around and then decided to just spit it back into his cup. Nothing like cold coffee.

"Marcus, If you need anything I'll be in the com room on deck 2, have to place some calls."
23 Jan 2017, 10:28pm
Markus' eyes dilated a hair breath as his hand snatched the pass out the air.

"Understood sir. Please alert me when we depart." Markus bowed and turned sharply out the bay doors.

An hour and a half later the refurbished Taipan hung suspended in the FSS Eagle's Flame, ready for deployment should then need arise.

This is oddly familiar.

Opposed to his previous account, this Anaconda was built like a tank, ready for war.

Just hope it has the same jumping power. It's 110 light years to Nanomam.

With little much more to do, Markus strapped in, taking the time to continue recalibrating the Hummingbird.
23 Jan 2017, 10:49pm
Jemine gazes up into Stryker's eyes.

"It's good to have friends," she says, giving him a soft kiss on his broad chest. "It's good to have someone you can depend upon..."

She kisses him again, this time on his neck.

"It's good to have company. Do you like having company, Stryker?"

Without waiting for a reply, she wraps her arms around Stryker's shoulders and pulls herself up towards him so that their lips are almost touching.

"Well," she says. "Do you...?"
23 Jan 2017, 11:07pm
Stryker gazed back. As their lips were about to touch he whispered "Of course I do." The large man kissed her with abandoned inhibition. His large calloused hand wandered over her back. With a pull, he easily lifted the beautiful woman. The bodybuilder carried her towards a door. It slid open then closed behind them as they disappeared into the quiet quarters beyond.

"Alright, sounds good." Amar concluded the last of his calls and let out a sigh of relief. Fortunately, some of the people he had interviewed for security were the people on his list. Even more fortunate that he had rubbed off on them in a good way. A message appeared on his PDA, "Cargo Status: Ready for loading upon transference of funds." Good He headed back for the Docking bay.

Sitting on the cargo was a face Amar remembered all to well. "Jansen!" He shouted.

"Well what do you know, I heard someone was in need of a good co-pilot." Jansen responded, as his face broke into a large grin. "When's the rest of the crew showing up?"

"I just finished calling the last of them, they should be here any minute. In the mean time, how about you and I load this freight?"

Jansen climbed down from his perch and said in a more serious tone, "I took the liberty of looking at the manifest, since when do we just transport menial items?"

Amar nodded towards a small pallet, just close enough not to raise suspicion, but just far enough away to be obviously separated. Jansen and Amar wandered toward the pallet, and Amar gingerly opened one of the crates.

"LR-360s... wow..." He said under his breath.

"A client in Nanomam wanted us to deliver 500 units. The money is good."

"But Amar, this is only 100 units."

"The other 500 are already loaded, these are for the armory."

"Okay, just as long as we don't get scanned, gun running isn't exactly illegal, but its not strictly legal either."

Amar and Jansen finished loading the cargo into the Flame's primary cargo hold.

"Who's the jock?" Jansen asked indicating the Tiapan hanging in the other bay.

"Markus Omni, he's hitching a ride to Nanomam. Good guy."

Finally the rest of the crew arrived, and then an extra. Amar was shocked to see the smiling face of Hellen Kamarus, a security cadet. "Cadet, what are you doing here?" He asked rather taken aback.

"It's former cadet, I quit yesterday. I was wondering if you had an extra seat, heard some rumor about needing another fighter pilot."

Amar closed his eyes and placed his right hand on his forehead. Slowly he shook his head back and forth. What the actual... He opened his eyes, and she was still standing there.

"Did I say something wrong sir?"

"No, it's just that, you have a better chance making it here than out there, but your impulsiveness has" I cant believe I am about to say this. "Gotten you a ticket, go see VC Jansen about your cabin. After that, stow your belongings and stand by in the mess." Did you really just say yes to that upstart?! He then reminded himself that not to long ago he had been that way. He watched Jansen direct her to the cabins, and then yell something after her departing figure. Jansen then turned back to Amar and shook his head in a What are you on way.

Amar turned to the last pallet, the one he and Jansen had examined. Activating the hover function, he pushed the pallet to the ramp, and then directed it down the row of neatly stacked cargo to the service lift. Jansen joined him before the lift departed for floor 1. Once there, Amar left Jansen to packing the crates contents into the small storage room that had been converted into an armory, but before departing he glanced around the room. How many times have the contents of this room saved your neck? Too many.

Riding the service lift back to the cargo bay, Amar wondered what the next few days would bring. These thoughts quickly ended as he focused on the tedious matters of preparing for launch.
24 Jan 2017, 7:47am
The rumbling of the ship's engine layout caught Markus' attention. He stopped twirling the ring around his finger and jumped out the Taipan eager to watch the launch from the bridge. It was only when he'd reached the thick armored doors leading to the rest of the Anaconda that he remembered it wasn't the  Hiatus. he was aboard. He let his thoughts of viewing the takeoff when a young man entered the bay. There was something about him that Markus couldn't put my finger on..

"Markus Omni?" He said.
Unsure as to how Markus should address him Markus formally responded: "Yes sir?"
"I am Vice-Commander Jansen DeWilder. Commander Epsilon would like to have you on the bridge at launch if you deemed it worth your time."
Markus nodded loosing a crooked smile. "It would be an honor Vice-Commander. If you would, lead the way."

Jansen turned sharply and marched out the door with Markus in tow. His boots clattered against the heavy metal floors.
Wonder if those are Magboots he's wearing. Markus laughed inwardly, feeling the ground as he took slow deliberate steps to tell if the floors were made of any ferromagnetic materials.
They passed several doors leading to various labeled rooms such as the ship's primary cargo hold, armory, engine and other module-accessible rooms.
Markus was busy watching the perfectly smooth lines on the walls fluctuate in delicate patterns when a woman ran into his shoulder. Her attitude made it perfectly clear it wasn't an accident.

"Hey, look where you going!"
Alarmed Markus took quick note at the woman. She was short, piercing blue eyes, and an equally contrasting brown hair with red highlights.
Markus decided a subtle reversal was the best approach.
"My apologies ma'am, I am new onboard this ship. I should've been more on the lookout for crew members sprinting through the narrow hallways."
The woman opened her mouth to give a heartfelt retort but was silenced by a single look from the Vice-Commander. She gave me a terrorizing look and fled in the opposite direction.
"Quite the level of command here sir."
"The Commander likes a tight ship." Jansen answered firmly.
Markus turned to him then. "Now see, why is it that I keep thinking I know you from somewhere.."
"Like I said before, I assure you, we have no me-"
Markus snapped his fingers. "I got it! You were on the Galnet." He stated factually. "You were in that hospital with another man and a woman being shot at by that terrorist. I saw your arm got shot. And a doctor murdered.. The media never did complete it's story with that. Did they find who the man responsible?"
"That was on the Galnet? I did not know that.. You better ask Epsilon for more information on that."
Markus leaned back with a certain delight. He loved solving puzzles and after figuring out who Jansen was he felt as though he was flying. "Alright. I will then."

With that they entered the bridge without another word.

"Stand-By to release docking clamps."

"Roger, Clamps disengaging in 3, 2, 1."

The ship shuddered, with a sound like thunder, as the landing gear separated from the pad. Amar sat comfortably in the center chair, to his immediate right sat navigator Gladstone, she had flown once with him before. The left chair sat vacant, waiting, invitingly for its rightful occupant. The bridge doors opened, and Amar turned his head to see Marcus and Jansen file into the bridge. Quietly, Jansen joined him in the left chair.

"Gladstone, plot route to refueling checkpoint Alpha."

"Roger, plotting route to SPOCS 280"

The ship lurched as it left the pad, nosing toward the exit. Slowly, they cleared the dock and began the final checks prior to entering witchspace. Then a mysterious voice chimed in. "Good day commander, are you ready for me to engage the Frame Shift Drive?"

"Good day to you too Vega, and not quite yet. We have yet to clear mass lock."

"I understand," the onboard AI responded. "Just give me a nod before we engage."

After three minutes of "casual flying" to appear inconspicuous to station authorities, they finally cleared the no fire zone.

"All right Vega, have at it." Amar declared releasing the controls and standing up from his console. He walked over to Markus while the FSD was spinning up. "Have you ever gotten to watch the launch from the bridge before?" he inquired as Vega began counting down.
25 Jan 2017, 3:27am
"Yes, I have." Markus dipped his head in memory. "And that's why I wanted to meet you on the bridge Commander."

Markus wasn't a man with a military history, but he did his best to stand rapt and to attention. "Commander Epsilon, I've had previous engagements when it comes to working aboard Anacondas. I spent two and half years as a mechanic aboard the Hiatus. While the ship I served may not have been of the combat variant, I am a quick learner. In repayment for your services, I would like offer my assistance during the journey to Nanomam sir."
