Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The usual bang marked the end of the supercruise for the Midnight flash. With sparkling red flames coming out of the thrusters it immediately sped up to cruise speed. Matthias ran the usual scan he did when entering 'alien' territory.

Just one civilian ship ... a few security ships, good.

With the station so vast of ships it was easy to perform a quick, unscanned landing. Getting a positive response on his docking request with the permission to land immediately lead him to challenge himself to the fastest landing he could do.

9:55 read the docking timer. Being already aligned to the station's front he hit the boost.
9:52. Speed display read now 555m/s. Flight assist off, said the ship voice. He pulled hard on the stick.
9:51. The airlock slurped as the Midnight flash passed it being in a vertical position to it.
9:50. Just as the ship was pointing back to the airlock again, he hit the boost again. Landing gear deploying.
9:48. In a half circle oriented to the front of the station, it moved down into approach on the previously overhead landing pad.
9:46. 30 meters from touchdown. Flight assist on. Matthias did last tweaks to the approach vector. Landing gear deployed.
9:45. "The eagle has landed," he said with a low tone and a wide grin on his face.

He took off the black helmet, hastily threw a jacket and a jeans over his Remlok suit and grabbed a data stick.

Hopefully I find this guy quickly, don't wanna stay here for too long, thought to himself as he sled down the railing of the boarding ramp.

The screeching noise of this made the dock workers look up. To the dock master's question if he should do anything, Matthias responded with a brief "None" and a serious look. With long steps he swiftly left the docks, holding the data stick firmly in one of his fists.

Jacyn had been given a lot to think about. Phisto and Snipe's were probably correct. He had been interdicted on a simple courier mission, and the affair had rattled his cage. The young pilot aimed his sidewinder towards the mail slot. He was behind an imperial eagle, cued up to enter the station when the eagle's afterburners burned brightly and the ship just vanished through the slot. Jacyn moved his ship in, and heard the strange enveloping sound around him and watched overhead transfixed as the pilot of the Eagle expertly flipped the ship over, hit the boosters again bringing it to a stop, and deftly landed the thing in one unfailing stroke.

"Commander! Make way for on coming traffic!" came the voice of station actual. He felt his ship shake violently as a T-7 came up from slightly under him. He hadn't been paying attention. The shields were drained from the collision, and he was buffeted to one side and cartwheeled.

"Shit, shit, shit, shit, SHIT!" Jacyn fought to regain control of the ship. He lost sight of his landing pad and had to rely on the compass. A habit he needed to get into anyway.

He had overshot his pad, and he wasn't really sure how to fix the problem.

"Should I back up, or turn over?" he said to himself....

He decided to turn over. It was a good plan, for the most part, but he came onto the pad backwards. He turned the ship in an agonizingly slow yaw. The Turn of Shame and he felt his face flush.

"Sorry," he said to a passing Cobra, but of course the pilot couldn't hear him.

The ship's A.I. spoke up, "Warning, landing gear is not deployed!"

"Fuck!" Jacyn swore, flipping the switch. He was truly flustered. He felt the small ship make touch down, and sighed taking a deep breath.

Not the most graceful of landings.....

Mentally absent, Leif scrolled through the contact list.

Imperial Eagle, "Midnight Flash", seems very nimble.
Type 7. Cumbersome and slow.
Sidewinder.

"Target shields offline," said the ship voice unexpectedly. Oh. Either he kissed the station or tried a rendezvous with the Type 7.

This event brought a smile to his face, while the forehead still hurt a bit.

After a while just sitting in his seat, he went on to scroll through the passenger list.
23 Mar 2017, 11:29pm
There's some weird people around here...

Matthias looked around. His contact was still nowhere to be seen.

Instead of further waiting, he returned to his ship, where he put up his comms panel.
Seconds later, a female voice, filled with anger, sounded up in the Eagle's cockpit.

"This is an unsecured line, I told you not to contact me before you return! You know the urgency and discretion of this!"
"I know," Matthias responded calmly, "but there is a major problem to it: Your contact. Not at the spot he's meant to be."
"Damn it!" The female voice screamed now. "Get out of there now! Keep your head low and check your tail!"
"Understood. Over and out," he responded while flicking switches and pressing buttons to get the Midnight Flash away.

"Mike Echo Dash Mike Foxtrot, cleared for takeoff, please obey the speed-" -  "Fuck your speedlimit!"
The ship raised up a few meters and retracted its gear, shortly after the engines spit red hot flames accelerating it to supersonic speed within the docking bay. The sonic boom resulting from this echoed within the bay, shaking it violently. Before the tower could radio a warning, the ship was out and spooling up its jump drive. The security forces tried to chase it, but their few shots hardly hit the Flash's shields, unable to keep up with the insane speed of the ship.

For nothing, Matthias thought to himself as it entered witchspace.

Stepping out of the bar, Phisto turned left and began walking as quickly as Marcus' weight would allow.  Looking over his left shoulder, he glanced back at the entrance, trying to see if anyone followed him out - familiar, or otherwise.

A sudden heat on his head demanded his attention.  It was coming from the stares of several onlookers.

"Nothing of concern here, folks!  My friend just had a bit too..." his face cracked into a sheepish grin, "...well, much."

He continued walking, searching around for a good place to stop.
01 Apr 2017, 1:25am
Marcus let's out a small groan, momentarily seeming to have some life in him somewhere. It was extremely short lived. He is seemingly down for the count.
01 Apr 2017, 1:57am
Peering over at Marcus' head as he groaned, Phisto smiled  As his friend passed out fully again, he spotted a sign, "PUBLIC RESTROOM."  Taking a glance over at his charges' bloodied hand, he turned towards the entrance.

"Alright, man, let's see if we can't clean that up a little bit."

He spotted an on-looker staring at them.  An elderly grayed man in a black suit, he raised an eyebrow as they made for the restroom entrance.  Phisto sneered at him, "Eh, in your wildest dreams."
01 Apr 2017, 2:29pm
Making his way into the bathroom, Phisto surveyed the scene.  There were a couple stalls, a couple sinks, and the standard array of bathroom supplies available.  Walking over to a sink, he gingerly lifted Marcus off his should and set him down, back to the wall.  Bringing Marcus' bloodied hand up to the sink, he inspected it, speaking softly to himself,

"Ok... doesn't look too bad," he ran the sinks water, washing Marcus' hand under it.  Soon he was picking out glass fragments, chuckling to himself,

"About that money you owe me..." he reach out with a hand, and patted Marcus playfully on the cheek, "Instead of condemning you to a poor house or worst, why don't you clue me in as to what you've been up to?  I don't like being in the dark, especially if there's an unknown intelligence lurking there."

Marcus' head drooped to one side.  He began to drool.  Phisto continued,

"That so?  Damn, man.  We're all screwed!" he laughed, tilted his head, then smiled again.

"Hope Syd's good.  She was... striking," he paused, allowing himself to linger the memory of seeing her the first time.  Shaking his head clear and satisfied Marcus' hand was clean enough, he looked around for a makeshift bandage.  Looking down at his own shirt, he shook his head.  One didn't find "Risky Business" shirts so easily outside their typical touring areas.  He removed Marcus' flight jacket, reaching up to the shirt underneath and tearing away a sleeve.  He wrapped that around Marcus' injured hand, securing it tightly.  After putting the jacket back on Marcus, Phisto moved in front of him, reaching out with his right hand to cup Marcus' face, turning it to him.  Phisto's voice dropped, a growling whisper,

"But seriously, friend.  I don't like surprises of a certain sort.  Someday, I'll come talk to you about what you've seen out there, and for the sake of you and yours, you will speak." He slapped Marcus' cheek again, lifted him back onto his shoulder, and headed out of the restroom.

Under the ambient noise Leif's steps didn't stand out. With his thoughts moving between employing a pilot, what he drank earlier and what just happened at the bar, he didn't notice Phisto carrying the body until he already passed.

He stopped and turned, staring at him in an awkward silence for a second.

"Hey, umm, you need a hand with that?" he asked to break the silence.
02 Apr 2017, 8:57pm
Phisto turned, surprised to have been address with an offer of help, not arrest.  Seeing it was Leif, he smiled.

"Oh, hey!  Um... no, I'm alright actually," he said, "Marcus has got a big head, but that's about it."  Spotting a sandwich kiosk on the other side of Leif, he nodded in its direction.

"You hungry?  My treat."
02 Apr 2017, 9:42pm
"I won't refuse that offer."

Leif was relieved that Phisto reacted that way and turned to study the kiosk's menue.
03 Apr 2017, 2:01am
"Great!" Phisto looked over at the kiosk, swinging Marcus around.  A bystander gasped as Marcus' legs swung around in front of their face.  Phisto ignored this, making his way over.  Setting Marcus down, back to the counter,

"Want anything?" he paused for a moment, "No?  Your loss."

He looked up at the attendant, pointing to the menu, "Let me take one of those," motioning back at Leif with his thumb over shoulder, "And what ever he wants.  My treat."

Moving to the side of the counter, he waited for Leif to order.
03 Apr 2017, 2:09pm
"I'll take a cheese-ham sandwich, please."

Leif turned towards Phisto.

"So what do you plan to do with him? Apart," he wildly gestured, "not bringing him to the medical ward?"

"Marcus?" he looked down at his friend and smiled, "Get him back to his ship, let him sleep it off. He'll be fine," Phisto tilted his head, then his eyes lit up, "That reminds me..." he knelt down, searching Marcus for anything that might show where his ship was docked.

"Ah, here we are. Dock 23. Anaconda. The Virtue?" Phisto laughed, and smiled at his unconscious friend, "Fake it till you make it, I suppose," Phisto stood back up and turned to Leif,

"Earlier... about the leaving you with an empty glass..."
03 Apr 2017, 5:13pm
Leif's sandwich had arrived, and Phisto stopped talking while he was in the middle of his bite.
He chewed quickly.

"What about that? You took me more literal than I expected."

By making grimaces he tried to get out the crumbs out of his cheeks.
