Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Sydney relinquishes a cynical laugh, so maybe he was telling the truth- but she wasn't sure if that made it better or worse. One thing was for certain in her mind- if one of her friends went missing, she'd be more concerned. He didn't seem all that worried, which meant either there was something in it for him, or Rex was a better friend to him than Marcus was. In either case, it didn't put Phisto in a position that would garner her trust.

"Oh don't you worry, I will." She turns and walks towards the ramp of her clippper.

"Good talk. Let's do it again sometime." Another well practiced feigned cordiality directed to her 'guest'.

Before completely out of view she turns and smirks at Phisto. "With friends like you..." she winks as she presses the button that retracted the ramp of her ship.
26 Jun 2017, 10:51pm
Phisto sticks his hands in his pockets as Sydney walks away.  Following her path up the ramp, he continues to smile, saying nothing.  At her final jab, he raises his hand delivering a quick, disingenuous salute.  Watching the ramp close up, he walks out of the dock, smirking at the Clipper one final time.

Snake.

He shakes his head scornfully and pulls his PDA out of his jacket.  Pulling up Snipes' contact, he quickly types.  "Rex - Get Marcus back safe.  Don't trust those two.  Good hunting. - P."

Tucking the PDA back in his jacket he scans the crowd before briskly walking away from the dock.

"Oh, not too long," Leif casually responded as he hit the boost another time, "Charge to supercruise only takes a few seconds and there's no larger vessel around, but you should know that."

"Halt, Commander, slow down or we will be taking actions," the radio sounded, apparently from one of the Vipers.

With the press of two buttons and a hard pull on the stick the Beluga started drifting, facing back at the dock, and the FSD started charging.

"I love this evasive maneuver," he commented as the drives howled up again.

"Ready to engage," came the ship voice just as all inertia was cancelled out and the craft accelerated back towards the station. The Vipers managed to lay some fire on the Passenger Liner's shields, but overshot their target by far.

"4"

The ship moved back in directly on the mailslot.

"3"

Sparks of light flew past the canopy.

"2"

The blue of the atmospheric barrier from the docking bay seemed to flood around the ship, forming the typical tunnel.

"1"

Leif cracked a grin, keeping his view straight forward.

"Engage."

The Moto Meli blipped off into Supercruise, leaving only smoke trails and some confused security pilots whilst the darkness of space engulfed the cockpit.

To be continued off station
30 Jun 2017, 4:09am
Back on his ship, Phisto smiles as he secures the items from Isaiah's canister in his master bedroom.  Remlock on and ready to go, he heads up to the cockpit.  Settling into his chair, he lingers for a moment, gazing around the inside of Citi Gateway.  Upon clearance for take off, he smoothly guides No Data Available out of the dock and into the void.
30 Jun 2017, 5:04am
Sydney looks over to Blake with a shit eating grin as she watches Phisto depart.

'Ready to follow some bread crumbs?' She arches one of her eyebrows with the oddest of mischievous expressions the world should never have seen.

'Best get to his wake while it's fresh there Dr. Evil.' He responds, a half grin of his own on display.

With that Sydney's clipper rises from its pad and gracefully coasts through the mail slot. Within a few seconds they scan the remains of Phisto's sly departure and follow suit.

"Tango Romio Delta Delta Echo, please divert course to pad number Three one" the docking facilitys reply to my  docking request, after which the 'Lucky Starflower' manovered into the mail slot and directed her course to the docking pad. After slowing down and landing her pilot, CMDR Jonathan Kingsley-heartson stepped down her ramp.

"Inara's Citi Gateway, I'm finally here, and could use a drink" he starts to walk towards the entertainment district of the station, looking for a bar
25 Jul 2017, 3:24am
"CMDR TC Requesting permission to dock" I say nervously

"Confirmed. Please divert to pad zero six." I wait as long as I can and hit silent running as I go through the mail slot. I fumble with the controls a little bit as i land, causing one leg to land before the others. I struggle to right the ship as it teeters on one leg but eventually force it down as the heat alarm starts blaring. I shut down the engine and disembark from my ship, the " Lucky Lucy," and I cautiously search for anyone to sell my stolen goods to.
26 Jul 2017, 12:16am
Touching down on the landing pad for the last time for weeks, the Cobra MK.III, Agenor's, landing gears hit the landing pad with a thumb followed by the hissing of the engines coming to a stop. When prompted to do so, the pilot chose to enter the hangar and sat back at the pad lowered into the station.

With the ship in park, the back door opened, the ramp lowered and at that door was a young man with a slight stubble on his face and a clean haircut. Taking several glances around, he realizes what he's about to do and the repercussions of what he is going to do and began to walk down the ramp towards the station's bar.
27 Jul 2017, 3:43pm
The Mudpuppy, an Asp Explorer in classic blue paint, calmly makes its way towards the mail slot. Timidly, it's pilot switches on his communicator to request a landing pad.

"This is Commander Newt requesting docking clearance, over."

"Clearance confirmed, set down on pad 05."

"Affirmative," Newt replies, switching his communicator off. As he enters the station, he can't help but wonder if it was the proper thing to say. In doing so, he overshoots the pad and is forced to realign himself. Upon finally making contact with the pad, Newt lets out a sigh and climbs out of the chair.
29 Jul 2017, 10:27pm
"Here again? What is it with you and this place?" Nick groaned as Cartlidge's steel blue Anaconda exited supercruise. The station's traffic seemed quiet for the time being, so Cartlidge decided to let his docking computer do its job.

"I'm not sure. The drinks I guess? Don't worry. We'll meet my contact and be on our way," the bounty hunter replied.

"Were are we meeting them?" Ten asked as the ship sailed though the mail slot.

"The bar of course, unless we beat him here," Cartlidge replied, pushing his controls away to get out of the seat once the ship had landed. With a metal clank, the Man o' War locked itself to the landing pad, allowing the trio to leave the bridge.

After saying a good-bye to Giyari at the Galactic Bar Adam made his way back toward the docks of Citi Gateway and his ship. He sat near the edge of the Ghost Orchid’s landing pad, sort of just looking toward the Anaconda that had been freshly coated with a matte finish of white paint in admiration. For the moment he watched as the Citi crews went back and forth finishing up their extensive check-up upon his exploration craft, lips pursed with slight annoyance that the bill would be high. Given such a repair cost might have been expected after a few months out of human space.

Thankfully, Adam was the only one around having to deal with it. Most of his crew had either taken to staying on Citi or have managed rides back to their respective systems, families, or whatever they had waiting for them back at their homes.

The crew chief looked toward Adam over his shoulder before waving his ground crew off. Job done. Without a word he presses a few buttons upon his holo-display and fronted Adam a rather extensive bill for repairs and maintenance as well as a message stating “Commander, you might want to look into getting yourself a new Anaconda. Get rid of this RimLiner model, go Delacy. This one is going from Vintage to Piece-Of-Junk fast. Hope you're liking the repair costs.”

Adam scoffs at the message, locking eyes on the back of the crew chief’s head as he wandered off toward his next job of the day. “Figures!” The explorer muttered with a sigh as his hand reached up to run through and ruffle his auburn hair. “No one likes the classics anymore.”

“DeLacy heavy sierra tango romeo, you have been cleared for landing. Proceed to landing pad three niner.”

Stryker smirked as the Vanguard coasted through the mail-slot. The apparently rusted out hull of the anaconda was covered in thick metal plates and a twisted mass of spikes and other sharp objects. It’s rounded front had been modified into some sort of wicked battering ram. The red thrusters kicked in as the ship noiselessly drifted through the flight deck.

Overhead, Stryker noticed an old Rim-liner, painted in a fresh coat of matte white. She was a slick looking ship, no doubt about that. He turned his beast over and brought her down. The hydraulics hissed as they took on the weight and the ship's engines whined down. Stryker slipped out of the pilot's seat, and peeled off the Rimlock. He didn’t much care for the claustrophobic sensation it left him. He was still unable to find one that fit him properly.

He rode the docking lift down out of his ship with a number of men clad in black and a piece of machinery resembling a forklift. He was wearing a open leather jacket with the sleeves ripped off showing off his massive tattooed arms, and a fishnet like tank top. The pants were black, and of heavy duty leather with a belt hung low, and plated boots. The lift shuddered to a stop and the squat dock master came huffing up.

“I haven't received you cargo manifest,” he said in a nasal voice.

Stryker looked him in the eye. “Oh, my mistake, I thought I sent it beforehand.” The beefy pilot slipped the official a number of credits.

A smile broke about the man’s face. “Oh, ho! No problem,” the dock master continued, “next time be sure to send it directly to me….”

“I’ll be sure to do that.” He turned back to his men and waved his finger in a circular like gesture.

They started unloading the ship. Large unmarked containers were being transferred into the station’s secured receiving bays.

Stryker oversaw the operation until he was satisfied that it was well taken care. Turning on his heel, he disappeared down the lit corridor, and into the station itself.

Passing through the busy market, he decided to do a bit of window shopping. A holo-novel store, caught his attention and he wandered in. It was a quaint shop and the patrons all gave him the wooly eye. He was use to such things. He picked up some documentary about some explorer and gave it look over. He pressed the preview key, and a holographic display sprung to life, casting his chiseled features in dull red glow.

There was a chirrup, and the bodybuilder pulled out a pad.

"Gary fucking Winkler...." he hissed. Where did that fucker get the nerve to move my assets without clearing it first by me? Typing an encrypted message back, Stryker made an appeal to have the assets moved to HIP 104471, and not Nuen.

"That guy is a hack." Adam gabbed loudly over to Stryker from where he stood, motioning toward the documentary the larger fellow was holding in his hands. "The guy in the Holo I mean." Scoffing, Adam shifted around a bit and placed his own holo-device down, speaking to Stryker once again about that documentary. His tone was friendly, but slightly preturbed at subject matter of the holo. "He always goes on and on about how important the newest hardware is for explorers. Ha! Like they are around enough to upgrade anyway. The old stuff can work just as good if not better than the new stuff, if you ask me. He's a salesman more than he is an explorer, despite all those documentaries. Just in it for the money."

The explorer shifted around in his attire, a seemingly new jacket with the Pilot's Federation logo for Exploration on the shoulders, t-shirt, with plain looking jeans and boots.

Clearly having no trouble speaking to a stranger, Adam continued and motioned toward another set of documentaries a few shelves down from Stryker. "If you're looking into details on exploring, try those over there. No fancy-shmancy technology fads, just expeditions." Adam thrust his hands into his the pockets of his brown jacket, and casually wandered over with a oddly friendly grin on his face. "Saw that Anaconda of yours though as you landed, pretty mean looking ship." He let out a laugh and waved off his own comment. "I mean that in the best way possible, of course. Although I wouldn't take you as the exploring type!" Adam had, in fact, just stereotyped Stryker in the most obvious way possible.

"That guy is a hack..."

Stryker looked up from the preview and towards a man who was standing relaxed with a brown jacket. The large man took notice of the explorers patch proudly displayed on the shoulder, then looked back at the holo-novel.

It was in fact, the call to explore that got him off that speck of dust in the first place; and in his heart, he wanted to do more. But life has a way of marching onward, and that dream was all but dead.

"You don't say?" Stryker said in his deep voice setting the novel back on the shelf and looking in the direction the man was pointing. "I have found that older junk, tends to function better anyway. Besides, you can work on it. All that newer shit, they make it next to impossible to work on yourself."

He picked up one of the titles that were recommended, and turned it over in his wicked looking mechanical claw. "Ya, she is," he said looking back at the man. "The ship I mean. But she gets the job done."

Stryker turned his blue eyes back upon the man and nodded to the patch. He was obviously an explorer and he gave him the benefit of the doubt. "So, you're some explorer then? If I wanted to, just get away for a bit, what would you recommend?"
02 Aug 2017, 4:18am
Adam shrugged casually, offering a small chuckle as he strode up a little more. His eyes traveled the man, noticing attire and the rather abundant muscle mass. Yet, he continued on in the friendly manner as before, motioning with his hand to the so called 'Hack's' documentaries. "Exactly, if I have five credits for ever time someone told me to update something, I'd be rich. Well, maybe not rich, but you get the picture." Adam laughed, breathing out through his nose. "You hit it right on the head though, all this new stuff is so complex it's nearly impossible to figure out yourself. Frankly, I'd rather have something a engineer can fix rather than having to turn my 'Conda around and make an earlier voyage home."

"What would I recommend?" Adam laughed as he looked around. "You meaning documentaries or just equipment?"

There was a slight pause as Adam pursed his lip and listed again before replying. His eyes briefly met the metal claw that Stryker sported, eyebrow raising curious but with no ill intent. Adam scratched his nose a bit then spoke. "Trader then?" He made an aimless gesture back toward the docking area. "Or you some sort of bounty hunter?"
