Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Leaning back against a rail with Leif to his front, Phisto crossed his arms.

"Sure, Leif, go ahead.  I got a little more time to spare."
16 Apr 2017, 2:06am
"Alright."

Leif went to lean onto the rail next to Phisto, his arms resting to his side on it.

"Where was I? Ah, the trading. Long time in short, I made my way up to a Cobra. One fine ship, that is, I really enjoyed flying it. Back in those days all this tuning, or what do they call it, engineering, wasn't that widely spread, so it was really the fastest ship on the market. Fled from quite a number of pirates with it."

For a brief moment, he got lost in thoughts, seeing old pictures in his mind.

"But one day there were these two eagles. At first they went like the usual pirates, like 'loose your cargo or your life', but I ran from them aswell. I cruised over to the starport I wanted to go and there I met them again. Turned out, this was their home and they were part of a cult for a sausage. This may sound weird to you now, and it did to me aswell, but they worship a holy sausage. At that time I didn't really have any bonds. I was free to go anywhere I'd like, without leaving anything behind. The Cobra was really everything I owned. So, they caught me somewhat with my pants down at the station and talked me into joining their cult. Weird feeling, they made me pray to the sausage and I had a bit of disgusted feeling about it, praying to something to eat. But once you know the background, that the recipe of their holy sausage once saved the planet there from starving altogether, it doesn't seem so weird anymore."

He looked at Phisto.

"From then, it was a bit similiar to what you told me. They teached me fighting in a ship, also hand to hand combat, and they didn't seem to be pirates anymore. Within a year I went up to ... I'd say PR-manager, talked to the public, companies and other various groups in their name. Along with that my Cobra turned into a Python. I don't regret anything till today."

Taking a breath his shoulders followed along, then he continued.

"Then, like eleven months ago, I got myself an Asp Explorer, told them goodbye and vanished into the deep darkness of space. I set my goal on the center of the galaxy and just started jumping in a spiral pattern around it. Got quite some sights along, and nearly lost my life in the stream of a neutron star. Kept a cool head, which probably cooled the entire ship," he chuckled, "and managed to jump out of it. Dragged myself over to Colonia for repairs, just around christmas, and finally arrived back at home a week after new year. Handing in all the exploration data took me and the guy of Universal Cartographics over three hours."
16 Apr 2017, 2:24am
Phisto laughed, nearly doubling over at Leif's accounting of his cult experience.

"For crying out loud.  Is there anything humans won't worship at some point? Is nothing sacred?"

Wiping the tears from his eyes, he moved forward from the railing, turning to face Leif and leaning back against it.

"Good on you for getting out of there..." he trailed off for a moment, looking back up at the quietly listening Beluga starliner, "...cults have a way of inspiring that get the hell away from everything decision."
16 Apr 2017, 3:06am
"It wasn't really that bad being there. You may know it, you just grow into it, without knowing it any other way. But I just made that decision. Point on my bucketlist, you know. So I was able to scratch that off. Only three more places I want to visit and three more ships to call my own."

Leif smiled.

"So, I returned from this big trip, and against my expectation I didn't get the Elite rank right away. It was nagging on me. But somehow, I disturbed enough waters for one explorer to come up to me and ask me to take him out to a system with three black holes. After some thinking, I said yes, fitted a cabin into my Asp and lifted off three days later. He gave me a timeframe of three weeks to get there and back, which I used up entirely, but it was worth it. Another load of beautiful sights. Should've seen the eyes of the Universal Cartographics guy as he saw me entering his office again!"

He laughed.

"So, that rather short trip of fourteenthousand lightyears finally got me Elite. From all that exploration rewards I bought this very ship. Did I say people go crazy about flying with an Elite Explorer?"
16 Apr 2017, 3:13am
Phisto listened, but his thoughts were elsewhere.  Hearing Leif talk about the beauty of nature and the incredible sights he'd seen especially affected him.  These wonders of the cosmos hit him in a unique, emotional way, bringing his intelligence in touch with his heart as few things could.  While often these feelings were positive, the discussion of cults, of organization of belief darkened his demeanor.

"Hmm... yeah, I'm sure they do.  Not unlike folks hiring Elite and Deadly combat pilots..." he trailed off, looking back up to Leif's ship, then back to him, "...listen, Leif, you think there's anything out there?  Something like a god, or gods?"
16 Apr 2017, 3:36am
Leif turned to Phisto, taking a breath.

"My honest opinion? I don't think so. Every higher spiritual instance was founded because people hoped that praying to them would change something in their life. In the stone age people worshipped fire, then they worshipped gods of rain and thunder, gods that ruled the land that comes after death. Did that make their lives better? No, there broke out quite some wars about that, ending countless innocent lives. I do accept that people believe in such entities, they are free to do so as long as they don't harm anyone else with it. And this cult was a peaceful one. They made it their burden to help those in need for food. Not without background thoughts, of course, but never tried to spread their religion on the path of war."

Turning back to the ship, he kept silence for a moment.

"But if I take your words on something being out there," he let it fade and turned back, "there is something out there. We just gotta figure out if it's friendly."

Grunting, Phisto put his head down and shook his head.  Slowly raising, his eyes locked on Leif with intensity,

"I'll tell you right now, it ain't friendly."

"Is that so?" Leif asked surprised, "what makes you so certain of that?"
16 Apr 2017, 4:12am
Phisto's jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing.  Tension rose up his back, into his neck, and caused his head to start buzzing.  He looked down at his right hand, again forming it into a fist and releasing it, breathing out as he did so.  His eyes softened.

"Just looking around, mostly," his face forced a weak smile that quickly dissipated, "What I mean... is if there's a God, look at its creation: destruction, pain, all that.  At best, it's indifferent, but consider what I've seen?  What I've done?  All the proof I need."
16 Apr 2017, 4:32am
Leif kept silent, impatiently shifting around as he didn't know what to say.
He tried to wrap his head around what this seemingly insignificant man next to him has seen, and what shit it must've been.
16 Apr 2017, 5:01am
Phisto sighs, shifting his weight in empathy to Leif's movements.  He runs his left hand through his hair, shaking his head to clear his mind.

"You ever hear that old question?  About how if God exists and is good how can there be evil in the world?"  He paused, his neck tightening again, his head buzzing.  This time he did not clench his right hand, "Well, my answer is hunt the bastard down and shoot him in the head," he chuckled, "Hold him accountable for this shit place he dreamed up."  He looked down, rubbing the back of his head.

"But, of course, I'm just a man.  Ain't gonna get anywhere with God.  But his creation?" A slow grin formed on his lips and as it finished, he looked back up with his eyes returning to a blaze of fury, "Plenty of work I can do on that."
16 Apr 2017, 9:28am
A practiced hand gently nudged the nose of the Fer-de-Lance into alignment with the docking corridor, the ship passing gracefully through the forcefields on the way to its berth. Isaiah Evanson inhaled deeply through his nose at the sight of Citi Gateway's green-tinged docking bay.

A mixture of emotions welled up in him - some good, some not so good. The last time he'd come to Citi Gateway, he found himself in the center of someone else's tribulations. A series of mistakes, perhaps. I could have stopped at any time. I could've ignored that bounty.

I could have walked away.

But those thoughts were irrelevant. He couldn't change the course of events or the ripple effect it had on him and his relationships.

Carefully rotating the ship, he brought the Bloodfeather into a hover over the landing pad, checking his clearances and gear before descending slowly. His seat rocked slightly as the landing gear fixed itself to the landing pad.

"Okay, cut engines," Isaiah said aloud, the ship responding in kind.

"Will we be staying long?" the distinctly digitized sound of a female voice said. The virtual intelligence wasn't asking out of curiosity; it was a security measure, a sort of dead man's switch.

"Just a few hours. A day at most."

"Recreation?"

"Reflection is more like it," Isaiah said, rising from the pilot's chair and stretching. "I'll have my earpiece in. Just route any messages through it."

"Certainly, Commander. Enjoy your stay."

He grimaced slightly, clearing his throat. "Yeah. Sure."
16 Apr 2017, 10:51am
His head down, Leif thought of an appropriate response. A witty one wouldn't fit the mood, and he didn't know Phisto well enough to know how he would react. Finally with a response in mind, he looked up straight at the ship, and talked slow and quiet:

"You sure got a good tool to do so."

Shit, he regret what he'd said a few moments later, it's more than a tool to him, you fool!

"Ship, I mean."

His right heel anxiously moved up and down.
16 Apr 2017, 2:47pm
A good tool to do so...

Leif's words rang in Phisto's ears about the same time another sound caught his attention.  The familiar roar of Fer-De-Lance drew his attention upward to the ceiling of the hangar.  He strained his neck, tilting his hear at the calming sound.  Chuckling to himself, he wondered if it looked anything like his own Lance.  Turning his face into a smile, he breathed out as the tension left his head and went back down his neck into his back.  His mind wandered back to Leif's words...

Shit!  Leif!  You're probably scaring the poor fellow.  Calm yourself down, Phisto.  This isn't the place for this.

Flexing his right hand again, he turned back towards Leif with a broad smile on his face.  He pointed up.

"Hear that?  New Fer-De-Lance just rolled in to dock."

Leif followed Phisto's gaze to the ceiling, his heel stopped moving on the spot.

Phew, he got something else to focus on than me calling his ship tool. He's really sensible about that.

"Ah is it? I can't tell combat ships apart, although some pilots of the cult had one and I watched them docking on a regular basis."

He turned to Phisto, relieved that he got a distraction to talk about.

"I like that ship, too. Sleek design, those wings and," he rose his hands, his fingers forming around two imaginary balls infront of him, "dat ass."

Although he started laughing, he wasn't sure whether his company would like the way he just described his favourite ship.
