Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

As the young women enters the docks through the main access door a man bumps into her.

"Hey! Be carefull!" Erinia says. The person ignores her walking onwards.

She shakes her head and walks over to the Mordrema. After checking the Imperial Couriers Outside she enters the ship and runs a system check to make sure the maintenance crew did proper work.

"Citi Gateway Control, this is the Mordrema, requesting permission to take of." Erinia called the station.

"Permission granted. Docking restraints lifted. Please exit the station safely and promptly." the flight controller answered.

"Roger that, Mordrema out."

The young bounty huntress elegantly steers the ship through the mailslot and activates the afterburners to quickly gain distance.

"You have left the station perimeter, Mordrema. Safe travels commander. Flight control out." the flight controller said.

"Thank you and have a nice day." Erinia cut the line and activated her FSD smiling and eager to see some action again.

This place is not bad for some vacation, she thought as the Mordrema entered witchspace.

As a young pilot flew in his brand new, shiny little Type-6 transporter, he goes in to the dock. And then, everything breaks as he does repairs. What exists? What does not? And, he then wakes up within the sleeping cabin in his brand new, shiny little Type-6.

Jemine and Sam arrive at the docks, and head straight to pad 35 where they board Sam's Cobra III.

"It feels strange being in a ship again," says Jemine as she settles into the copilot's chair. She looks around the ship's cockpit, smiling faintly.
15 Feb 2018, 4:39pm
Sam smiles back to this a little more resolutely as he sits into the pilot's seat, his glasses now having more information coming to his eyes from them as he checked through routes and other data.

"Long time coming isn't it? And when was the last time we were in a ship together?" He asked curiously having forgotten the previous occasion.

"Course laid in, 15 jumps to LHS 3447, should be what.. 25 minutes give or take?"
15 Feb 2018, 4:54pm
"That sounds about right," says Jemine. "Assuming there are no delays, we should have sufficient time on Dalton Gateway to get some food before we make planet fall."

She flashes Sam a grin, then takes a deep breath and slowly lets it out.

"Ready when you are."
15 Feb 2018, 4:58pm
"In which case I'm the one buying food, and I'm going to insist on it this time."

Sam grinned back, like the happiest man alive.

"That makes two of us."

Sam had been starting up all systems in the meantime as the ship left the hangar and was lifted to landing pad level, awaiting the familiar sound of a clamp being released.
15 Feb 2018, 5:25pm
"It's been quite a while," Jemine says in response to Sam's question.

She looks to left and right as the access corridor passes by. She absently gross the controls, and drums her fingertips on the inactive flight-stick. She checks the holographic readout before her, nodding in approval.

As Sam prepares to engage the FSD to take the ship into witchspace, Jemine clears her throat.

"Sam... what did you mean earlier, when you said you had some 'funny cargo'? What sort of funny cargo, exactly?"

Continued in Off-Station...

Jubei woke up to the sound of his bunk-side alarm making the usual incessant beeping. There was no sun to be seen, but galactic time was 0830 and it was time to wake for the day's activities.

The past couple of weeks were filled with visits to the medical ward to check up on Miss Ibara and make sure the assassin didn't come back. She was progressing well enough for having a hole blown in her chest. Jubei also had to deliver the news that her partner, Tom, was found dead on their ship. They were obviously targeted, probably getting too close to whatever they were looking for. So, Jubei took precautions to make sure that the inspector was at least guarded during night hours, and that the room was prepped for any intrusion.

He also investigated around the station for shady characters, of which there were plenty. At first it was overwhelming, but he narrowed down the possibilities with some help from a former rival in the Federation, making the task more manageable. The Inquisitor also made sure to keep tabs on Morgan and her crew to make sure they weren't involved and so that he could avoid them, especially her big protector. Jubei's findings also took him off-station and back to Miss Ibara's system to check up on a few leads, but he always came back to Citi Gateway.

Jubei also visited Suki (the greeter at the Olive Grove) often. Sometimes just to have a conversation, other times for some sparring. The more the Inquisitor talked with Suki, the more he liked her. She reminded him of a more serious version of Veronica. Suki often spoke very highly of her employer and her partner, explaining how kind and attentive Jemine was to the staff and how supportive Sam was of her.

There were newscasts of how the Thargoid threat was approaching the bubble all over the holovid screens, talks of eventual doom and what the powers were doing to avoid annihilation. Jubei would have to get involved soon he figured, but he had to make sure that humankind didn’t destroy themselves first, even if it was person by person, mystery by mystery.

Jubei left is bed to shower and dress for the day. He already had people to help, and a mystery to solve. He figured that he’d be in Inara for a little while longer to make things right. The day will properly starts after a shower and some coffee.

Phisto Sobanii crosses his arms, leans back against the boarding stairs of his Cobra III, and smiles broadly.  Breathing in deep, he takes in the sight of his newly re-christened ship the Ferin Sha.

As a work crew passes, one of its members catches sight of Phisto's smile and slows down.  Catching Phisto's gaze, the worker head nods back at the ship.  "Nice ride."

Phisto nods in return.  "Thanks."

Eyeing Phisto up and down, the dock worker cocks his head.  "What's the name mean?"

"'Dancing ground.'"

"Huh."  The dockworker shrugs to himself then walks quickly to rejoin his team.

Phisto pops forward off the boarding stairs, grabs the hand hold, and swings gracefully around to the first step.  Trotting up the stairs, he disappears into the belly of the craft.

Margot Looked out the cockpit glass of the Cobra as the ship was lowered into the hangar. Her ship she reminded herself. Hunter had said that all his assets were hers, and he had kept his word. Now it was time for her to keep the promise she made.

After quickly getting her bearings Margot made her way towards the entertainment district, in search of the nearest bar.

Standing with her hands on her hips, Dasha looked over her new ship, a pre-owned (and heavily modified ) Viper Mk. III that had found itself falling in her hands. The damage to her old Courier was apparently too much to repair. Costs to fix it's hull were much more than it was worth as scrap value, so after serving her well for over a year, it was time to say good-bye to her. Rest in Pieces Corvid, Rest in pieces...

Her eyes narrowed slightly as Dasha judged the bright green paint of the second hand ship. It was a little more garish than she was used to, but the colour was growing on her. Its leaf like sheen reminded her of a lizard she'd seen once at some dive of a bar back home, a large beady eyed thing that liked to sit across the bar tenders shoulders and flick it's tongue at patrons as they tried to ignore it.

"Yep, that's settled it then. Reptile. Works well for you, dont'cha think?" she joked, typing the new name into the ship registry on her holographic display. Hopefully the vessel would serve her well enough to get back on her game.

Dasha took a few careful steps around the front of the ship, poking at a few keys to deploy the ships hardpoints. The weapons bay doors slid open fluidly to reveal the lower multi-cannons. First glances said that the guns were something special, the modifications to the barrels and ammo belts screamed extra power, and the bluing of the metal surrounding the barrel ends hinted at some generous heating somewhere within it's firing mechanics.

With a grin quickly spreading across her face, Dasha made her way around to the back of the ship, her excitement building as she took in all of it's details. This was looking to be quite the bargain buy!

The shiny new Lakon Chieftain made it's way through the dense station traffic, officially named FRC Hudson's Stryker. Teuf chuckled at the thought of the name that his fellow Federation pilots gave it, "Teuf's Bug Blender" Ironic that's it's never been in a Thargoid encounter. Teuf activated his comms and hailed ATC for a vector. The reply came back "Lakon Foxtrot Romeo Charlie, cleared for vectors to pad 18 and welcome." Teuf gave a automatic acknowledgement not immdiately realizing the irritation in his voice. After he closed the comms he realized his irritation and thought "Why in the hell am I so agitated? I've just cashed out a huge bounty on some obnoxious pirate in the TZ Arietis system and am flush with credits for the time being." Teuf said to himself "Probably because I've never been here. I'll just get a drink and relax before I look for quarters for the next three days." The Stryker touched down with a gentle thump and settled into place on pad 18... that's when he saw the individual standing in the cargo area of the control building. "Great." he thought. "This can't be good news at all." He powered down his systems and dropped his new Remlok helmet into the seat, pulled off his gloves and headed for the hatch. "Might as well get this over with..."

As Teuf stepped off the ramp, he hooked  his foot on a fuel hose, stumbled forward, and regained his footing. "I've been in that damned chair too long." he chuckled. He looked up to find the person he was looking for... she was gone. "To the bar it is then." He wondered to himself did I really see her? Dismissively...he trudged on to the bar.

(Feel free to jump in, the story can be as fluid as need be)

Luke led Ten and Jacob into the hangar bay where his Fer-De-Lance, Pseudonymous, was parked. The Jet black vessel stood proudly above the trio, filling the space with it's presence more than the hull itself could.

"Here she is." Luke said, a smile on his face. She wasn't the best Ferdie around by a long shot, but she was his. "Had some slight modifications done here and there, but nothing too extreme. For the most part, she's bought and paid for with blood, sweat, and credits."

Being in the lower gravity of the dock area had the added benefit of easing his leg off too, which lightened his mood somewhat as he gestured towards the entrance ramp.
13 Mar 2018, 1:10am
"Interesting," Cartlidge muttered, taking in the view of the ship. "I've always been a fan of the factory standard colors, but I'm sure it's nice having a ship that can blend with the backdrop of the void. Are the exterior modifications for added atmospheric performance or...?"

As the pair followed Luke up the ship's entrance ramp, Ten remained silent, primarily out of utter disinterest in the topic at hand.
13 Mar 2018, 1:58am
"Honestly? I haven't hit atmo in... oh... probably since I got my licence I think..." Luke said with a shrug. "These are mostly just a case of form over function really. But the black paintjob has that added bonus, and the pods around the thrusters help conceal the exhaust which is nice. Easier to kill someone who can't see you."

He took a few steps up the ramp and tapped in his access code to open the door.

"Pulse lasers, Multi-Cannons, and a Huge Plasma Accelerator on the bottom, for when I really need someone dead. I like to be adaptable so there's a little of everything here."
