Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Phisto wiped the steamed mirror in front of him with his towel, bringing the cloth across and down its reflective surface with his right hand.  As he peered into his own eyes, he brought the towel away from the mirror and wrapped it around his bare waist.  He sighed, turned from the mirror and stepped out into the narrow hallway outside his ship’s washroom.  Stepping barefoot onto the cold, metallic surface he smiled at the sting of the floor against the warm bottoms of his feet.  Stepping across the hall into his small bedroom, a gentle red light caught his attention.  He had a message.

Stepping over to the display, he opened it, “Still around City Gateway?” It was Isaiah.  Phisto had "met" Isaiah via a chatroom on Galnet.  They had several seemingly in-depth conversations, albeit virtually, and Phisto felt a strong kinship with the man.  While not cut from exactly the same cloth, they shared a lot of the same material.  He smiled, swiping a keyboard image onto the display to type, “Sure am, buddy.  What’s up?”

He turned from the display towards his closet.  The door swished open at his approach.  Quietly he began leafing through some dress shirts, his fingers deftly passing them across his field of vision.

With a laugh Leif remembered the story of the drunkard Bryan told him earlier.

"Just don't treat every passenger like that, and don't let him even come near the passenger lounge once that happens."

Tensing his belly muscles, he brought the feet up from the dashboard and settled them down on the ground again while bringing up a holopanel showing a work contract. It showed up in front of Bryan's seat aswell.

He took a breath. "So," he started, then paused to breathe out and in again, "I don't have any more doubts or questions to here and I like you. If you don't have any either..."

With a smile he rose his arm and moved his hand, palm facing upwards, towards the holopanel.

"Funny thing, I just happen to be in the neighborhood. Just landed a little bit ago, as a matter of fact," Isaiah typed back quickly, stopping to look up every so often.

"Heading down into the station proper right now. Wouldn't be much trouble to meet up for coffee or something, would it?"
19 Apr 2017, 7:46pm
Phisto flipped back and forth between two red shirts. Each a similar tailored cut, their hues varied between a dark, blood red and a more conventional shade. Phisto looked between the shirts, then to the black suit on his bed, and back to the shirts again. A pleasant ding interrupted his debate. Tightening his towel, he walked over to the display and pulled up Isaiah's response. Typing quickly,

"Really? That's great! So was that Bloodfeather I saw? She's looking a little plucked, my friend. Coffee sounds perfect. Just let me get dressed and I'll head out. Where am I meeting you?"

Sending the message, he turned back to his closet. The dark red shirt was pulled to the side slightly, holding space between its hanging neighbors, catching a bit more light from above. Phisto grinned and pulled it out of the closet.

When in doubt, go with what you know.
20 Apr 2017, 10:11pm
"Yeah, that was her," he typed back. "There's probably a dozen coffee shops around here so I'll find one and let you know."

The lift came to a stop and people disembarked, Isaiah among them. Walking along the main thoroughfare, he kept his eyes up and about, scanning the crowds and vendors as he always did. The place felt familiar to him, despite the fact he'd only spent a few days total aboard the station.

Never thought I'd be passing through here again.
21 Apr 2017, 4:55am
Phisto laid out the blood red shirt on the bed, just above the pants.  He stepped back to inspect the outfit.  Nodding with satisfaction, a fresh notification chirp hit his ears.  Pulling up Isaiah's message, he continued nodding and typed back,

"Sounds good.  Just need a few minutes to dress and I'll head your way."

He hit send and turned back towards his bed.

Alright, that'll do. Best not fuss around and keep the man waiting.
22 Apr 2017, 12:57am
"Well then, I guess this is the start of a glorious partnership then," He said thumbing the 'I Accept' button on the contract. The ship's systems auto filled in his credentials having already identified him as soon as he'd stepped aboard.

Bryan stood to shake Leif's hand as if to make it official. "A pleasure doing business with you," he said as they shook hands.

Bryan got the feeling that he and Leif were going to get along swimmingly, although he was beginning to wonder if Leif would mind calling it a day soon as he was anxious that he'd also arranged to meet with Stryker around about now. He'd said he'd send a comms message if the meeting was going to overextend but there was still some time left before he'd have to do that.
22 Apr 2017, 1:38am
Smile spread over Leif's face.

I didn't expect it to be that easy, he thought while shaking hands.

Taking a step back, he put up his arm onto the pilot's seat.

"So now you should get your things over here," he said, "and we could have your ship transported to my base aswell. It's probably cheaper there than here to have it docked for longer."
23 Apr 2017, 3:57pm
Phisto was walking from No Data Available's hangar to the lift leading from the dock to the interior of Citi Gateway.  Seeing one closing, he raised his hand and called out, "Hey!  Hold that, would yah?"  A woman reached out to stop the lift, resting her hand on the door and following it back into its slot as it opened.  Stepping into the empty lift, Phisto nodded politely at the woman.

"Appreciate it," he looked her up and down, his eyes lightening slightly as he appreciated her features.  She was slightly taller than him, his eyes meeting her chin were he to look at her level.  Her face was sharp, fit, with short black hair cut neat highlighting the dark skin tone of her face.  She pulled her hand from the elevator door and it moved closed.  Phisto and the woman took up position opposite each other, with Phisto in the back corner reclining against a railing and her in the opposite front corner near the lift controls.  The elevator shifted as it began to descend.  She turned to face him.

"No problem." taking the chance to regard Phisto, her eyebrow raised quizzically.  "Dressed pretty fancy there, aren't you?"

Phisto smiled, "Meeting a friend for coffee."

"Coffee?" she chuckled, her eyes following the cut of his suit pants up through his red shirt and black jacket, "If that's for coffee, can't imagine what you do for dinner."  Phisto's eyes narrowed at her, a slight glint shooting through them.

"Much the same," he waited for her eyes to meet his, "Name's Phisto."

"Maya. Pleased to meet you," she moved forward and extended a hand.  Phisto took it, his smile turning into a grin at her strong, firm grip.  They shook once and dropped the grip, moving back to their corners.  Returning his grin, she spoke, "You from around here?"

"No, just visiting.  You?"

"Just stopping off for some supplies, refuel," she smiled, "Been through here quite a bit on my normal routes.  Never heard of anyone just visiting."

Phisto shifted his weight, moving one hip into the corner and resting his right elbow on the handhold. Folding his hands in front of him, interlocking the fingers, he tilted his head to the right then back straight again, "Sort of just... stumbled upon the place.  Not much to look at, but the people are interesting."

"Ah, people person, are you?" she joked.

"You could say that."

The elevator continued its descent.

The scent of coffee wafted from a nearby storefront, grabbing Isaiah's attention by his sense of smell. His eyes searched for the source among the hustle and bustle of the crowds around him, finally sighting the glowing holographic sign out in front. The Vignette.

Glancing back down at his slate, he typed out the name of the shop to Phisto. "Look for the guy in the tan jacket. Probably going to find a corner to sit in." Old habits die hard I guess.

Tucking his slate back into his jacket pocket, he smoothly moved through the crowds and stepped into the shop, the smell of roasted coffee beans bordering on cloying. The bell dinged at his passage through the door, the patrons ignoring him for the most part as he got into line and studied the menu.

Coffee. Why did I pick coffee again? I don't even drink it. Tastes like chalk.
23 Apr 2017, 10:59pm
Maya smirked at Phisto's reply, "Smart-asses always seem to be that way, don't they?"

Phisto grinned, "That's what I like about seasoned traders, always so perceptive."  A loud buzz interrupted the pair.  Phisto looked down at his jacket pocket, feeling the vibration of his PDA against his chest.  Pulling the PDA from his jacket, he apologized to Maya, "Sorry, one moment... might be my friend." Pulling up the screen, he typed his response back to Isaiah,

"Sounds good. I'm black suit, red shirt, debonair demenor."  Placing the PDA back in his pocket, he looked back up to Maya, finding her eyebrow raised at him.  Phisto grinned at her, "Can I help you?"

"What makes you think I'm a trader?" she asked.

"You said you're stopping for supplies," Phisto continued grinning, "you obviously know this station, don't carry that long stare I've seen some shit look, and from your handsome features you've clearly done well for yourself."  Phisto felt his cheeks turn warm as he brought a hand up the back of his neck to scratch. "I mean, just a hunch."

"Not bad," Maya smiled, "because you just happen to be right.  What about you?  Fancy get up, meeting a friend for coffee in some station you just happened to visit?  Figure you're some big shot executive meeting a business partner... or otherwise... on the down low?"

Phisto laughed, "Sorry, not exactly.  I believe the preferred term for my line of work is Consulting Combateer."

Maya playfully sneered, "Oh, good.  My favorite.  And the friend?"

"Just that, a friend.  We're allowed to have those, right?" Phisto quipped back.  Just as Maya was about to respond, the elevator slowed, approaching their destination.  She looked back at the control panel to confirm, then turned back up to Phisto.

"Looks like our stop," she said as the door opened.

Phisto motioned to the door with his hand, "After you."

Maya smiled and moved through the doorway.  Going to the right, she turned around and nodded at Phisto, "Thanks for the chat.  Elevators rides are usually a lot less interesting..."

Phisto walked through the doorway, returning her wave with a lazy salute, "...or memorable.  See you around, Maya." Maya waved her fingers at Phisto one final time as he dropped his salute, then they both turned their backs to each other and went their separate ways.

Walking to a station map kiosk, Phisto typed The Vignette into the search function.

"Oh, you have a base? That's handy, where abouts? Bear in mind I don't usually come out this side of the bubble so you may need to be a bit broad with your answer." Bryan asked.

He thought moving the "Nomadic Wayfarer" to a private hanger would probably be a better option in the long run. If he could save a few extra credits on a hangar lease he wouldn't complain.

Bryan gave just enough time to hear out Leif's answer before he told him "Hm, it might take a while to move my stuff to the Beluga, I have to meet someone soon before I start moving my stuff. Don't know how long it'll take, depends on what he wanted to show me. I'll message you when I'm done to let you know."
24 Apr 2017, 2:28pm
"Yeah, it's a sort-of base. Because I am friends with the locals, they're giving me the hangars extra cheap and I am the first one called to carry their VIPs. I usually take my breaks there."

He turned back to his seat, bringing up the station service panel.

"Take your time. We will be in this ship for some time anyway," he said while seating himself, "and while you do so, I'm gonna see if there's passengers for the return trip."

Supporting himself on his elbow on the left armrest, he began clicking through the passenger list.
24 Apr 2017, 9:22pm
Turning the corner, Phisto spotted a sign ahead reading The Vignette.  Walking briskly to the entrance, the door dinged as he opened it.  Seeing a line for the counter, he stepped into place at the end.  Turning his head around the store, he searched for Isaiah.  Spotting a man in a tan jacket ahead of him in line, he grinned.

Better wait till he turns around.  Make sure it's him.

Crossing his arms and shifting his weight to his right foot, he looked at the menu.

Ooh... dessert!

"Ok then, I'll see you later," Bryan said as he went to leave the enormous cockpit although it was more of a bridge going by the size of it waving a salute as he left. The door shut behind him and he headed off to meet with stryker.

Bryan marvelled at the size of the Beluga once again as he walked down the hallway on his way back to the boarding ramp but what he arrived at wasn't the boarding ramp but instead an engineering cupboard.

"Hang on," he said out loud although there was no one around to witness. He thought back and realised he hadn't been paying attention to his surrounding because he was distracted by the size.

He looked around to see if he could find something the would give him a sense of direction. He wasn't surprised to find a ship map on a board on the wall back a bit the way he'd come. He walked over to have a look at it. Generally, he had a really good sense of direction. The only reason he had gotten lost was because he was distracted, he didn't like being lost, it unnerved him.

Eight floors?!?! Fuck sakes, that just unnecessary

He located the 'You Are Here' blip on the map and quickly memorised the layout for the first floor, that was all he needed to find his way out. He had plenty of time to memorise the other seven floors later.

He found the exit a few minutes later without a second 'scenic detour'

"Bloody maze" he muttered jokingly to himself as he stepped off of the boarding ramp. he wasn't used having to remember a floor plan for his ships, them being small to medium at most.

Bryan took out a small PDA that connected remotely to his ships comms. "Dock 12 if I've remembered correctly. Ah yes, Stryker Aune" he sent a simple message that read 'Finished with the meeting be over in a few' He put the PDA away again and began the trek to Dock 12, luckily it wouldn't take long to get there from his current position. It would've taken longer if he was coming from his own dock which was located almost on the exact opposite side of the station.

He walked at a brisk pace and found himself outside the hangar in a matter of minutes.

"Federal Dropship?  At least it's not another hotel with thrusters" Bryan was starting to feel tired from walking back and forth in these massive ships everyone seemed to posses. Not to mention his walk from the Ingaba to his ship and then from ship to ship to ship.

Will I ever just get to sit down for a while he mused in his head. He was merely whinging for fun.

Bryan walked up to the Dropship's boarding ramp but before that he had to circle round to the front of the immense ship.

For the second time today Bryan called out into the gaping maw of the ship and could almost swear he heard an echo.

"Hello"
