Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Hey, that's no way to talk about a lady," Phisto grinned, "I think I'd like to get some air.  Gonna head back top side, alright?  See if I can't get a look at that new Ferdie."

Phisto turned, heading for the exit of the hangar, waving back at Leif.
17 Apr 2017, 1:57am
Bryan finally arrived back at the ship hanger that currently held his baby. "The Nomadic Wayfarer", it would've been quicker if Bryan had forked out a few credits to a station cab but he was currently in the mood to wander. It helped to clear his mind and let him seriously consider Leif's offer.

He looked up at the Asp Explorer, this faithful pile of junk had carried him to and from most places in the inhabited bubble and quite a distance from it too. He noted that the ground crew had finished applying the new paint job. The old one was practically gone after his latest voyage into the great unknown. He'd decided to go for a new style after having the stock blue for so long. It now sported a "Squadron Green" paint job instead. Bryan wasn't actually a part of a squadron or anything he just liked the contrast of the cool gray and the green stripes that ran the length of the ship.

Bryan wasted no time climbing aboard now that he was finally here. His arms were starting to ache from carrying around the small but surprisingly heavy crate of synthetic wine cartridges that he had been carting up and down the station since leaving the Ingaba.

He dumped the crate besides the drinks dispenser on his way to the captain's cabin. As the familiar 'Phiiish' Of the pneumatic doors closing behind him sounded he flung himself into the captain's seat. "Right let's see where you're at then CMDR Leif shall we?" He said as he brought up the contacts tab rifling thrugh the names of the nearby commanders.

"CMDR Phisto....No"
"CMDR Isaiah.....No"
"CMDR Stryker.....dont forget to see him later"
"CMDR Leif...there we go. Pilot of the Moto Meli. Ok"

He opened up the chat tab and set up a private message to Leif.

"Hey Leif, It's Bryan from the bar.
I think I've made a decision on your offer are you still available to meet."

He thumbed the send button. "And now we wait" Bryan said as he slouched in the chair, arse half hanging off the chair in a position that was awkwardly comfortable.

"So you have yours but still look at others?" Leif laughed. "See you around, this place is rather small."

After Phisto left, Leif stayed for a moment, admiring the beauty of his own ship.

"Oh, you know so few about people," he mumbled to himself, "You were out there for too long."

By swinging his arms forward, he got into an upright position from the railing and started to walk towards the boarding ramp.
About halfway there, his PDA beeped. A message.

He slowed his pace, pulled it out and read the message, it was from Bryan. With one hand he typed a short response:

"Dock 24, come over."

Once inside, he started to clean up the remnants of his breakfast.
17 Apr 2017, 5:48pm
Bryan grumbled at Leif's lightning fast correspondence he had no sooner eased into his seat when the 'blip' of the message flashed on the message window.

"Dock 24 ok."

He left the AspX switching off the ship's systems and locking it as he went. He felt melancholic leaving his ship knowing that it might be a long time before he would get to pilot her again.

After a short journey that would've made a poor montage he arrived at Dock 24. Staring up at the Moto Meli in all its majesty. the towering Passenger ship was bigger up close than he'd Imagined it would be while ogling the small rotating hologram in the shipyard panel of the station services.

Like his own ship, the Beluga had its own custom paint job. A huge calming blue was painted in a wave along the side of the ginormous white ship which a contrasting orange sliced through the blue in a similar fashion.

Bryan liked the colour scheme. He stood for a few more moments Basking in the splendour of the ship before heading over to the boarding ramp which was laying open.

"Hello" Bryan announced himself before entering. He'd never been inside a ship bigger than an Asp Explorer and was beginning to worry if he'd ever be able to find Leif in the massive ship.

Christ how many rooms does this have.....is.....is there a second floor on this thing

He moved cautiously into the main corridor of the ship and called out again a little louder in case he hadn't heard him. Although Bryan didn't know why he moved so cautiously, he wasn't expecting to be attacked or anything, maybe it was due to the fact that everything aboard the Beluga screamed luxury and he felt a reluctance to touch anything for fear it would break.
17 Apr 2017, 7:56pm
Isaiah descended the boarding ramp, the clamor of the docking bay filling his ears with a dull roar. All around him, ships came and went as ground crews serviced the ships berthed elsewhere in the bay. The chilly air of the bay had a curious combination of scents - a metallic, greasy aroma with the sweet hints of grass. Agricultural stations always seemed to have the same sort of scent, depending on what was being grown. But there was no mistaking it, not for him. Not after years and years of hauling cargo to and from Ackerman Market.

I should go home when I'm through here. Make peace with what happened there while I still have time to.

The service team dispatched to his pad arrived, and Isaiah gave a quick nod of his head to the crew chief. He was an older gentleman, tall and bald. He looked like he might have spent years in the low-g environment of bays like the one they were standing in.

"Nice ship," the man said gruffly. There was a hint of sarcasm in it. "Been seein' a bunch of these lately. Yours looks a little... used."

Isaiah glanced back at the tatty paintwork on the Bloodfeather and pursed his lips. It had been several months since it'd received the black and white wireframe scheme. The outer duralium hull was scored and charred, bits and pieces of it stripped away over time. Even the name emblazoned on the nose had started to become illegible.

"She's seen better days," Isaiah said thoughtfully. More than once, he'd taken the Bloodfeather to the edge. She was starting to show the signs of wear and tear, looking as rough as her pilot felt.

"You want us to give her a top-to-bottom for ya?" the man said, gesturing to the crew members to start attaching fuel lines and the like to the ship's access ports.

Isaiah mulled it over in his mind. It was his ship, and it was in need of a thorough inspection. But he wasn't sure he wanted to stay too long in a place that made him this uncomfortable.

"How long would it take?" he asked.

"Well, if you ain't beaten the shit out of your ship since the last overhaul, a day at most. We'll strip off the hull plates, give the superstructure a good once-over, make sure all the important bits are glued together like they should be. If you want us to look at the other stuff, that'll cost you extra and it'll take a bit longer."

Isaiah nodded his head, turning back to the crew chief. "Yeah. Go ahead. I can spare a little while."

"Alrighty then. I'll be in touch, Commander."

As the crew chief walked past, Isaiah turned to watch, grinding his teeth slightly. There was something odd about letting strangers near his ship. Bloodfeather wasn't merely a ship for him, it was an extension of his will. As the crew fixed lines and started the process of inspecting the ship, Isaiah felt a strange sense that he was the one being inspected.

"Blood," he said quietly. "Let 'em work on you, but don't let them aboard."

"I only open my cargo bay for you, Commander," the shipboard virtual intelligence replied smoothly. "And whatever company you decide to bring aboard."

"I thought we agreed not to discuss that."

"I understand your need for human companionship is strong right now. Consider it a friendly suggestion. I won't say anything. You're a free man now, after all. Isn't that what people say when a relationship ends?"

Isaiah grit his teeth as the wave of emotion passed over and through him. Caitlin's departure from his life was still a fresh wound. She'd had enough of his double life and she'd moved on. It made it that much more difficult to make peace with his darkness.

"Don't talk about it," Isaiah deadpanned.

"Confirmed," Bloodfeather replied.

Phisto just caught sight of the newcomer's Fer-De-Lance as it descended into the hangar.  He raised an eyebrow at the peculiar paint scheme and clear signs of wear and tear.

Well, one thing I don't have in common with that pilot - aesthetics and regular maintenance.

Looking down at himself, then back and forth across his outfit, he raised an arm above his head.  Sniffing his armpit, he slowed his walk,

Speaking of which... time for a shower and change of clothes.  Feeling.. fancy, again?

He picked up his pace, striding purposefully in the direction of No Data Available's dock.

17 Apr 2017, 9:57pm
Leif only percepted a faint "Hello" over the cleaning bots whizzing around that made him coming to a stop and listen. Only as he heard a second, much louder "Hello", he went for the main hall and sticked his head out. In the middle of it there stood Bryan, he seemed a bit scared about the size and luxury of this ship. He stepped out.

"Oh, hey Bryan, almost didn't notice ya."

He walked up to him and sticked his hand out for a shake.

"Welcome aboard. I assume you made your decision?"
17 Apr 2017, 10:28pm
"Hi, Nice to be aboard," Bryan said shaking his hand still looking around the Interior of the ship.
"Never been aboard a 'luga before. It's nice.........really nice."
Bryan locked eyes with Leif trying to make himself focus on the man he was still shaking hands with rather than gawk at his ship. He released his hand before things got a little awkward and took a small step back before continuing.

"yeah I've given it some thought, and if your offer still stands I think I'll accept."

Hang on isn't this a job interview...oh god. don't panic. the last thing we need is for you to get awkward in front of him we've made a good impression so far. just DON'T PANIC.

Bryan began to panic although he managed to maintain a facade of composure.
17 Apr 2017, 11:06pm
"You think you accept?" Leif asked tilting his head slighty, "That means you still have some doubts."

He took a step aside and raised his other arm pointing down the hall.

"But let's go into the cockpit. This will be your workspace for the next weeks until the Dolphin arrives. Time for you to get a feeling of this business, time for me to get a feeling of you. I don't mind if you step off in that time, and I also might say no after it. But for now..."
17 Apr 2017, 11:30pm
I said I think I'll accept because like you were saying we've still to work out the minutia. and in the end, it all comes down to whether or not you'll have me." Bryan explained as he followed Leif down the hall towards the cockpit.

"I'll try to save my most of my outfitting questions till later,"
"I'm an engineering hobbyist you see," he added in quieter tone like he was adding a side note to the conversation.
"But do you have a fighter bay equipped or are you going to test me with the Beluga itself. I mean I'm assuming you want to see a demonstration of my handling or something and it'd probably be best done from an SLF first. Ya know less insurance if something did go wrong." he added resuming the normal tone.

shit

"Not that it will go wrong," he added frantically. "I swear I'm a good pilot. It's just precaution. Stranger flying your ship and all." he let out a small groan of awkwardness.......He'd panicked.

Well done.

Idiot.

Leif let out a laugh.

"You're not gonna dock my 'Luga that soon anyway," he said with a broad grin and still chuckling, "it's probably the ship most difficult to dock."

As they entered the cockpit, he went straight for the pilot's seat.

"Take a seat, there's two to choose from," he said while seating himself and putting his feet up on the dashboard, raising both arms pointing to the co-pilot seats.

"So, this is not a ship you're in every day. Tell me about your ship."

By supporting himself on the armrests, he turned his body in the seat to face Bryan.
18 Apr 2017, 6:22pm
"Ah Right. OK," he stammered as he chose the pilot seat to the left of the captains.

Stupid stupid stupid

he took a breath as he eased into the chair trying to calm himself but became momentarily distracted by the gel cushioned seats.

OOOoooohhohohhhohoho. that feels nice.

Bryan felt more relaxed than before thanks to the magical ergonomic design of the seat and actually managed to get out a coherent answer rather than continuing on this downward spiral of cringeworthy awkwardness.

"Ah, well, my ship. I've actually managed to amass two different ships which I use for different purposes....I have A T-6 for mining and trading, and "The Nomadic Wayfarer" my Asp Explorer. I've currently outfitted it for passeenger transport, how I got it  is a story and a half but long story short, I got swindled into buying a handmedown pile of junk that barely had working Life support system let alone a working FSD, I've got it in working order since then, But piloting such a sad excuse for a ship has taught me a few things.
Whenever something breaks I've learned how to make something from nothing and its save'd my life on more than one occasion. I can repair almost anything nowadays."

He paused cracking a smile "Although the only downside of it is that everything outside of the passenger cabin is a bit of a Frankenstines monster of a ship and my cabin usually has random bits of tech to help me repair if something breaks. Good thing passengers cant tell the difference between a well made and a well put back to gether ship."

He sighed "someday I'll buy a proper ship that doesn't require maintenace every other day."
19 Apr 2017, 3:26pm
Isaiah watched the maintenance crew work on his ship for a few moments more. Satisfied that the work was underway, he turned and headed towards one of the many lifts to the interior of the station.

The last time his feet walked through these corridors, he'd been searching for a place to collect his thoughts and unwind. He'd been searching for so long, out in the wind and the wild, that he needed to recenter.

What he found was the catalyst for his current state of being.

He quickly banished the thoughts from his mind. Boarding the nearby lift with a group of others, he retrieved his data slate from a pocket inside his jacket. Two messages waited for his attention. He flicked a finger across one, opening it on the screen.

The ship is ready. Coordinates attached.

One more loose end taken care of,
 Isaiah thought.

The other message was encrypted. Better save that one for later.

The lift was starting to get crowded now, and Isaiah shuffled back into the corner, glancing up from his slate to see if any faces looked familiar. Part of him expected to see Lilith somewhere... they'd had their mutual introductions in a lift like this one, after all. She had him at gunpoint and he was dumb enough to play along. Bounty hunter in name only, he mused to himself, smirking slightly. What did she call me when we first met? A common destitute?

He wondered where she was now.

The lift shuddered, then started its descent into the station. Flicking through his old messages, he saw the name "Phisto." Wonder if he's around these parts? Couldn't hurt to send him a message...

Quickly he typed out a simple sentence, then sent the message off. "Still around Citi Gateway?"
19 Apr 2017, 4:08pm
Leif chuckled upon hearing Bryan telling about his 'pile of junk'.

"You see, I became a pilot after learning ship mechanic, and knowing how to fix stuff is a thing that sure helps while being out there."

He let his view wander from Bryan over the huge panoramic cockpit window to the station name inscribed on the opposite wall.

"This is such a high-tech ship thou, you can't fix everything on here."

"You mentioned you're doing passenger transport," Leif continued as he turned his head back to Bryan, "for how long?"
19 Apr 2017, 4:46pm
"Well, I told you I've been eyeing the Dolphin myself so I've been reading all the Saud maintenance manuals I could get my hands on. I reckon I could fix up most the essential systems in an emergency but of course, I'd have to actually replace parts after a certain point rather than scrimping credits like I have with my Asp."

Bryan paused to think about how long he's actually had the passenger cabin installed, he couldn't recall the exact date he had it put in. but he knew it wasn't longer than two months. "Eh, I've been ferrying for just under two months now. can't recall the exact date I started. I would say, customer satisfaction was always very high if it wasn't for the guy who I told you about in the bar. and you know how that ended up"
