Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Private security, actually, but the job has the odd and end to it occasionally," the large man grunted taking one last look at the holo-novel before setting it back on the rack. He turned and leaned upon it.

"Over all exploration. If I were to take a trip, what equipment  would you recommend?" He canted his head slightly. This particular individual seemed jovial enough. Even genial. Something that was becoming more and more rare. As an engineer, it then struck him. This man was talking about the value of older equipment, and then dropped his ship typed.

"Was that your Rimliner I saw in the flight deck? The one painted white?" Stryker folded his muscular arms.

Nodding as Stryker explained his profession, Adam made another gesture with his hands. "I see, can't say I know many who get into that sort of thing." He replies with a smirk, chuckling lightly. "Probably keep your life interesting though? And it probably means that Anaconda of yours can deal out some hurt, right?"

Then, at the mention of the Orchid, Adam's smile grew a little wider and he nodded eagerly once again. "Aye, that's right!" He replies rather cheerfully, once more motioning with a lazy hand back in the dock's general direction. "That RimLiner is old, but still plugs away. Not exactly 100% stock anymore, but she's still mostly all there. Had to work a few custom parts as some of the stuff the originals had aren't exactly in full-scale production anymore. Great legs though, can hit 60ly's a jump easy with room to spare." Adam seemed to glow a bit as he spoke about his ship before shaking his head.

Breathing out in a relaxed fashion, Adam then pondered Stryker's question. A hand raised up to cup his chin in thought. "Well, besides the basics like scanners, I prefer to side with comfort." He nodded in agreement to himself. "If you're looking to get away for a while, never hurts to be comfortable. A fully functional galley, one you can use in gravity or zero-G, really helps take the edge off each night. People seem to forget that gravity is pretty easy to find even out in the void."
02 Aug 2017, 7:05pm
Stryker nodded as he carefully considered the man. He was right, older stuff, typically was better.

He offered his clawed hand. "I'm Stryker, by the way. I can say this, the newer DeLacy stuff. Not so good. Hastily made and poor QC. Those old RimLiners were built to last. I can't....Well, actually I could imagine the work you've done to your FSD to get a jump of that range. That's really impressive. You must have stripped her of all the excess weight? What other modifications have you made?" He asked in earnest.

The large man took a deep breath. "What I can't imagine is all the wonders you've seen out there in the void..." He looked back at the docks and considered his ship. She was built to take a beating.

"How long do your typical expeditions take? Do you have a set destination, or do you let your wanderlust take over and follow your heart?"
03 Aug 2017, 12:21am
"Adam Firethorn, a pleasure to meet you Stryker." Adam replied, reaching out to grasp the clawed hand and give it a friendly shake and nod of affirmation.

He then shrugged a bit. "Really, it's a bit of everyone who has owned the ship who has put in some work on it." Adam continued, waving his hand briefly. "But yes, she's rather stripped down. Engines are still top of the line, or at least close by RimLiner standards, and the FSD is brand spanking new with a few modifications. But everything has been worked into a lighter-weighted version. Don't need weapons, cargo racks, combat level internals. Nope, just keeping her light on her feet without sacrificing safety. Jump range is as good as chaff if you ask me."

For a moment, Adam pondered Stryker. Never before had he been asked that question. It made him grin a little more. "And for time spent? Well, it all depends. Been out to Colonia and back a few times, nebula and..." There was a slight pause as Adam's eyes searched the ground for a moment. "...Other places like Hawkin's Gap, just got back from there actually." Another brief pause. "Interesting place to say the least. But, people pay us decent money to go looking around for whatever we can find, so I'm not really opposed."

Adam quickly laughed and placed his hands back into his pockets. "But hey, Combat!" He echoes with an eager nod. "Surely that has to get the blood pumping, right?!"
03 Aug 2017, 2:58pm
"Likewise, Apex," Stryker nodded slowly, his beefy arms still folded as he listened to Apex.

"Well, there certainty is blood involved," he growled. Not really wanting to discuss his profession, the large man deflects it back to Apex.

"How did you come by an old RimLiner? They aren't exactly a twelve for ten cents anymore" He was actually curious about the modifications made, being an engineer at heart, but didn't want to come of as being too nosy. He shifted his weight onto the other foot.
04 Aug 2017, 2:38pm
Quickly picking up the the subtle hint, Adam only nodded and adjusted the subject. His hand wiggled about in his jacket pocket for a moment, listening to Stryker ask about his old RimLiner. But, the question made him continue to smile.

"The Ghost Orchid's been around for a while actually." Adam began with a light roll of his shoulder, head canting slightly backward and eyes looking toward the ceiling in thought. "From what I know it's been everything from a trader to all strapped up in weapons. But, it's been around for a -long- time, so it's probably been through many different types of hands. Hell, we still have some of those old parts around in a warehouse somewhere."

His body turned, glancing out the window and pointing toward the white-painted Anaconda that was just visible over a few buildings within the docking bay. "Somehow ended up in my Mother's hands and she turned it into an explorer, I've only helped it along since then." Adam turned his head over his shoulder and smirked. "I'd be happy to show you around it. I wouldn't consider it impressive on the inside like any of those Imperial ships, but it's comfortable."
04 Aug 2017, 5:46pm
While other pilots come and go, one pilot remains at his ship, a Saud Kruger Dolphin, named Vae Victis, an ancient latin phrase meaning woe to the conquered. Despite the light years on the ship, it appears pristine, though the lone pilot, dressed in an original black RemLock suit, has removed one of the external panels and is set about tinkering with something inside. He mutters to himself, mostly things that would offend even drunken pirates, as sparks fly from the open panel. While the shipyard personnel usually handle repairs, nothing being done here would fit any concept of "repair".

After several more showers of sparks, the ship's external lights kick on, flooding the dock with an intensity that certainly exceeds any manufactured norm. After several minutes of high-intensity light, the lone pilot boards his ship, and music begins to flood the dock, competing with the station announcements for noise. The lone pilot nodded, watching the intensity of the ship's lights, and the readout on a small meter attached inside the open panel.

After several moments, he removed the meter and closed the panel, noting neither the music nor the ship's lights changing in intensity. Satisfied, he returned to the ship once more, killed the lights and the music. For the first time in nearly six weeks the ship's audio system did not cause the lights to dim and pulse. A short time later, he emerged from the ship again, this time with a small metal briefcase, closed the ship's hatch and locked it down. He finally took a moment to look around, noting the looks from the other pilots behind the black glass of his helmet before setting off towards the Market with a determined stride.

As an engineer, the large bodybuilder had a keen interest in looking over the inner workings of ships. But what surprised him the most was the fact that the ship was this man's mother. And apparently she passed it down to him. What a legacy. Stryker set his jaw for a moment. The bitter pill of his legacy left a nasty aftertaste in his mouth.

"So, your a second generation explorer? Did you grow up among the stars? Actually witnessing the splendor of the galaxy?" He shook his head.

"I couldn't say no to an offer to poke around your engine room. To see a FSD with a sixty light year jump range, that's gotta be something. That is, of course you don't mind someone like me, poking around in there in the first place?"

He made reference to Apex's earlier pigeon-holing stereotyping. He didn't actually really care, and found his own off handed remark a bit surprising. Looking back up and over towards the sleek white ship, he caught a glimpse of his mostly obstructed 'conda. It's huge sharp spikes lining the cockpit, giving it some sort of wicked mohawk appearance. The brutality of it, made him smile.

"Second or third." Adam replied with a shrug, reaching up to scratch his forehead in thought before giving it a small shake. "But did I grow up out there, no. Don't think they were too keen on bringing a toddler out into the Void. Although come to think of it, I was out there once or twice with them."

Adam then turned a little, aiming his body toward the door. The Explorer gave another shrug, this time accompanied with a small laugh and a friendly grin. "I don't mind at all, actually." He spoke, sounding rather chipper. "Showing off the Orchid is one of my favorite hobbies!"
08 Aug 2017, 4:48pm
Stryker turned his bulk to follow the man,

"So I take it your parents weren't around much? You must have missed them?"
08 Aug 2017, 6:26pm
Adam only shrugged, walking through the doorway and holding it open for Stryker. "Yeah, you could say that." The rather cheerful tone in his voice fading ever-so slightly. He turned his feet and began in the direction of the white Anaconda. "I missed them, yeah, but they were still my parents. Can't really blame them for doing what they wanted either."

He stuffed his hands into his jacket pockets, head briefly turning to watch a few ships travel about above them. "I got to see them more once I was old enough to tag along on those handful of trips. You get a lot of time to catch up, if you know what I mean."
09 Aug 2017, 11:32pm
An Asp Explorer with fresh scorch marks settles into a hanger, the hydraulic system letting out a final hiss as the gears cease moving. Emblazoned on the right side of the white and blue ship are the words Althea Malta, although a few of the letters appear to be fading.

At the helm sits a pilot double-checking his systems before disembarking. Covering his left eye is the shadow of a bruise, a sickly looking yellow and green patch of skin. Despite the blemish, he smiles as he goes about his work and bobs his head to an old-timey blues song playing over the radio. He finishes by submitting his cargo report to the dockmaster - brand new aquaponic systems - and then collects a few items before exiting his ship.

As he passes the hanger's terminal, one of the dockworkers turns in his direction and nods in greeting. He turns and nods back at the man. Shit, that guy again? What, are they just having him follow me now? He helps me home from the bar one time and now I gotta be reminded of that night almost every time I visit...

He turns the corner but manages to hear the dockworker joke to his friends, "The drunken fool returns. Wouldya believe I found that guy asleep near the Pilot's Market a couple months ago?" Gritting his teeth, the young pilot continues walking away from the terminal and hanger. Like I care... although probably a good idea to have one or two less drinks this time. He shakes off the barbed joke, smiles to himself, and makes his way towards the Market.

At the Pilot's Market, the black-clad and helmeted figure makes his way through the sparse crowd, scanning the various vendors, hucksters and con artists, plying their trade, toting a metal breifcase. He stops here and there, always asking the same question: "Have you seen a man, about 1.6 meters tall, about 86 kilos, use to fly a garbage hauler through here, callsign Dilbert Drape?"

Most just shake their head, a couple acknowledge knowing who this person is, but none admit to having seen him lately. One points him in the direction of a particular kiosk, while a rather nondescript fellow attempts to relieve the black-clad commander of his briefcase, only to discover his grip is far greater than it might seem. Unphased, he looks at the would-be thief.

"Gravity is much higher where I'm from, don't make me show you how much higher and you won't spend twice the time in the infirmary than I will in a holding cell."

The would-be thief attempts to play off his actions, but the black-clad commander isn't buying, and brushes off the encounter, as he makes his way towards the kiosk. He knows he's probably being given the run-around, but presses on with the same sense of urgency that brought him to this den of snake-oil vendors in the first place.

The bodybuilding pirate followed Apex along the open corridors of the flight deck back to the brilliant white Ghost Orchid. He had to admit. The old RimLiner design was aestetic and functional. He listened to the man and noted the change in tone.

Curiously Stryker probed the conversation deeper.

"Were? Does that mean they are no longer with the living?" He thought back to his parents for a moment, then quickly dismissed the memory.

Overhead, gate control issued it's loitering message, that echoed about the deck. He watched a sidewinder graze dangerously close to one of the massive spikes on his own ship. Stryker felt a smirk blossom on his face. He rather enjoyed impaling the Vanguard into his hapless foes.

Adam shook his head speaking quickly. "Nope, only retired." He said with a warm chuckle as he glanced back to Stryker. "Thankfully, mostly everyone in my family it well among the living." His replied, watching Stryker's gaze as he watched the sidewinder. "But, exploration sort of digs at you after you do it for so long. How many humans there are around, imagine only seeing a select few for months or years at a time?"
