Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Sydney does her best to obscure herself from view by standing behind her landing gear, but anyone paying closer attention could catch the slight glow of a burning amber being raised and lowered from time to time, a dancing line of smoke following close behind.

Her paranoia getting the best of her, she shifts her weight off the current relaxed lean she'd been propping herself up with, and arches her head around the landing strut to look for any new sets of eyes.

Immediately she sees Phisto, undeniably he'd seen her as well. Sydney sighs, annoyed, yet mildly entertained at the irony of the situation. Her cynical sense of humor often appreciated moments like these, because they were funny, even when at her expense. There was one person, just one, she was hoping wouldn't catch her ever doing something as self destructive as smoking. Sydney rolled her eyes, even she knew it was ridiculous. Then again, to her, a display of weakness was a display of weakness, and once you found one, you were well on your way to finding others.

But here she was, caught in the act, and there was nothing she could do about those results-- so she does what she's always done, and embraces the moment by enjoying the defeat. To her, it just meant she was one step closer to revenge. With that she returned to her somewhat obfuscated lean against the landing strut, and took a long draw from her lit cigarette.

..... let me guess, to add insult to injury, you'll stop and bitch about the smell.

She smiles for a second before taking another relaxed draw.
25 Jun 2017, 11:55am
The intense burn of a cigarette mid-draw catches Phisto eye. Bringing his attention to the landing gear of the Clipper, he spots Sydney. Chuckling to himself, he raises his hand in greeting, flashing a "V" symbol with his index and middle finger.

He calls out to Sydney. "Heard those things'll kill yah."
25 Jun 2017, 12:04pm
Syd can't help but arch a brow at his gesture. Of course you did.

'Oh my gosh, you're kidding!!' She says with as much teenage angst as she can feign.

'If that's the case, by all means let me offer you one!' She whips immediately after, doing her best not to enjoy her own little jab too much.
25 Jun 2017, 12:33pm
Phisto laughs and heads towards Sydney. The underbelly of the Clipper casts a shadow on his features and outfit. More of a silhouette than a man at this stage, he holds out his hand to receive a cigarette.

He pats his jacket with the other hand, a sarcastic smile growing on his face. "Got a light? Or do you like me more than I realize?"
25 Jun 2017, 5:43pm
Great.

Sydney rolls her neck in his direction, she almost rolls her eyes but she catches it, so instead Phisto receives what most might call a creepy eye flutter as a substitute.. She flips open an aged metal canister, pulling out one of the neatly aligned and archaic forms of nicontine consumption known to man; reluctantly offering it Phisto.

Once he grabs it she takes a pull off her own and gestures the end of it to Phisto, insinuating he could light it that way.

'Sorry,' she says cynically 'I don't.'

She knew he knew that was a lie of course, but any gratitude she could strip away from him in the moment was a victory to her, granted she wouldn't have had to stomach any of it had she not offered him one to begin with, like an idiot. Who knew he'd really accept in the first place?

Bryan buckled himself into the copilot's seat as the ship dusted off. He snorted a laugh to himself at the bodyguard who fell over because of the sudden jolt of movement.  He didn't want to say anything out loud in case the comm was still on. The Moto Meli reached 50 feet above the pad when Bryan noticed that the docking bay was particularly crowded with ships waiting to depart.

"Be advised pilot, the mailslot is currently obstructed, Station Emergency Services are working to clear it, please mind the heavy traffic inside and outside the station, over." said flight control before going silent after a short bleep that signified the end of the message.

Bryan looked to Leif who seemed to mirror his puzzled expression. he leaned over to the console and asked "FC this is CoPilot Bryan of ship Lima dash Mike Mike Niner Niner what exactly is the problem"after a brief pause the operator replied "A Sidewinder was trying to smuggle narcotics onto the station and managed to wedge itself in the grill outside the mailslot, there are several SES vipers on scene trying to maneuver the ship out of the way."
Really"FC can is there an ETA on how long this will take, we have a passenger that is anxious to get going"
the comms went silent while the operator double checked with the Vipers on the scene to get an estimate.
"ETA is roughly 10 minutes"
"Thank you, Bryan out"

he turned to Leif "A bit anticlimactic after that take-off, don'tcha think"  he turned to the comms control and changed the settings to broadcast internally so he could address the senator and his men. "This is your CoPilot speaking, Unfortunately, there is an obstruction in the starport which will take roughly 10 minutes to clear, after which we will endeavour to get the journey underway at our earliest opportunity, thank you for your time." the comms didn't pick up anything from the senator's end but Bryan was pretty sure he saw him grumbling about the delay on the cabin surveillance feed. Bryan once again turned back to Leif "He really wants to get out of here, and probably for a reason, you don't think it'll be a problem? will it?"
25 Jun 2017, 8:02pm
Inspecting the Senator's face, Leif let out a sigh. He muted the comms and looked over to Bryan.

"He said it's urgent, so it is urgent. Also, he pays, so I'm better off doing what he wants me to do," he explained and laid his eyes on the sidewinder.

Leif bit his lower lip. Damn.

"Check the contacts for ships that might follow us," he said as he aligned the Beluga with the slot, "so everything that's not system or cargo vessels."

He flicked the comms channel open again.

"FC, this is Lima Dash Mike Mike Niner Niner, you better get your vessels out of the slot now. Maybe you remember my impatient passengers, they want to get out of here."

"Negative," the woman on the other end replied, "standby for clearance."

Nevertheless, some of the Vipers in the slot began moving out. Leif chuckled, muted the external comms and switched to internal.

"Hold tight, people, we're leaving in no time," he announced and couldn't hold back but added another chuckle still audible before he muted the comms again.

"This is it!"

The engines howled up and unloaded into a fiery red glow, accelerating the craft rapidly despite its size and mass. Most of the Viper's pilots got notice of it coming and quickly strayed out of the way. However, one of them wasn't fast enough and got hit by one of the tail fins, consuming almost all of the Vipers shields and sending it spinning out of control.

The alerts window popped up and stated that a fine has been issued, but Leif simply ignored it and hit the boost another time.

"Just for your information, this is not the standard departure protocol. Have you found any suspicious ships?"

After being hit by a beluga, a shieldless Viper bounced off of the approaching matte black corvette as it approached Citi's mailslot. The Darkfire, almost invisible with its stern to the void, slammed full on its reverse thrusters as a passenger ship began bursting its way out of the station through a cluster of debris and other system authority vessels.

Moments later, the corvette flew in low over a clipper toward its landing pad, awaiting its commanding officer in docks.

26 Jun 2017, 3:12am
Phisto locked eyes on Sydney's as he placed the cigarette between his lips.  Leaning forward to Sydney's ember, he sucked in several times attempting to light it.  Successful, he moved back and grinned.  Taking a drag he broke his gaze with Sydney. He looked up at the Clipper.

"Nice ship you got here.  Come here often?"
26 Jun 2017, 3:55am
Sydney, now taking note of the Corvette that flew menacingly close overhead, took a second to tap on her datalink attached to her wrist.

'Aren't we sophisticated, sharing a sin and a special moment before facing off. Just like the old days.' She responds, deflecting his original question, for now.

Reading the data that came through, she quietly speaks: 'Frank Urban?' She looks up at the Corvette and narrows her eyes, digesting the information attentively. After a couple of seconds she smiles while looking at the Corvette.

Ooohhhh, I see what you did there.

Sydney, relishing in her own ingenuity returns her attention to Phisto.

'Try not to cheapen this classy reparte with such a lazy and trite segue.'

'Come here often...' she repeats under her breath, legitimately unimpressed.

She takes another pull of her now waning guilty pleasure, staring at Phisto stoically.

She waits for him to say something, anything, authentic in regards to the only reason she was even giving him the time of day: Marcus. Any other topic would simply be a waste of her time.
26 Jun 2017, 5:22am
Snipes hastily stepped out of the lift and hurried across the corridor and deck toward the landing pad and its corvette. Waving off the station crew who had been assessing the ship, he began to make his way up the boarding ramp while inputting more into his console.

No sooner had the ramp retracted and the thrusters kicked to life to raise the corvette, the matte black coloring shifted to a shiny chrome as the hull sent pulses through the paint's unique crystalline structure.

Simultaneously, the bridge crew applied a command to switch the ship's transponder ID.
Snipes stepped onto the bridge, placing his helmet on a racking in the rear of the bridge. He then turned to the XO and helmsman and simply said, "Take us out."
26 Jun 2017, 2:26pm
Blowing a draw of smoke out his nose, Phisto smiles. "Classy reparte? Is that what this is? I was just trying to lighten the mood with a little silliness." Looking back up at the Clipper, he prepared another draw. "Always thought these were a little too fancy for a combat ship. Sure, fast, but got a nasty habit of getting pushed too far then just kinda..." he tilted his head, bringing the cigarette to his lips, "...hanging there. Helpless."

Phisto shrugged, drawing on the cigarette as he turned his attention back to Sydney. Pulling the cigarette from his mouth, he inspected it curiously as smoke lazily escaped from his nose and mouth. "So, Marcus? How long have you known each other?"
26 Jun 2017, 4:56pm
Sydney, still somewhat preoccupied with the Corvette that was now shifting its appearance, took the opportunity to perform a second quick scan of the vessel.

That's it... she thought, as she took note of the minor yet substantial changes to the id parameters of the Corvette.

'Whoever said it was a combat ship?' She snaps. 'And let me guess, your idea of a win condition probably revolves around flying a Fer De Lance? How original of you.'

Sydney's cigarette was all but gone. With a commanding flick she sends it on its way simultaneously turning to Phisto.

'Cut the crap already. Why don't you tell me where he is, exactly? Or maybe you just don't know? Maybe this confident facad is only that, a mask, and behind it is a simple pawn- someone Rex, or Frank, Gwaed, or whatever you want to call him can move around his board- manipulate with little to no effort, and I just wasted a cigarette on the wrong person?'

She stands, still, her arms now crossed.

'Take your time, I'll wait.'
26 Jun 2017, 5:18pm
Phisto set his weight back on one foot, smirking at Sydney's jabs and rant. As Sydney reaches the end, he gazes into the lit end of his half-finished cigarette, then drops it to his feet. Casually rubbing out the ember with his foot, he rolls his eyes. Standing back up to his full height, Phisto gives her a once over and winks.

"Obviously," he grins, "your Clipper isn't for combat. Regarding Marcus, I honestly don't know." His eyes look up, as if through Sydney's Clipper. "Maybe ask that higher power?"
26 Jun 2017, 8:54pm
"Oh lordy" said Bryan to himself as Leif hit the boost. The things I do for some spare cash. Bryan winced as the fin caught the SES ship that wasn't fast enough out the way and the reckless flying bounty flashed across the console.

Bryan did keep his eye on the radar like he was told. "Suspicious ships? Yes, there is one, A Beluga just blockade ran though what was essentially a government roadblock, oh wait that's us" note to self, try to befriend your employer for a couple of days BEFORE you be a sarcastic ass to him" well if you apply situational context I guess there are the 4 System security vipers that paired off from the rest to pursue us. Oh and how long till jump? they're deploying hardpoints." he said.
