Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"I'm guessing it was quite the battle if Data is in its current state. And thanks for the salvage rights, I'll be sure to be resourceful with them. Hell, if I can nail the schematics, I could probably get her punching again in a bit." He scrolled through the paperwork to see that it was in order, looking as if he was staring off into space for a moment.

He then looked straight back at Phisto, shifting the tone of his voice a little. "You know they're going to be ok, right?"
28 Jan 2018, 3:33am
Phisto curls his lip sadly at Rex's remark. Putting his hands on his hips, he looks back out at the Cobra. "I know." Several moments of silence pass. "We... they... have been through a lot. They can take care of themselves."

Crossing his arms, Phisto cocks his head and then shakes it slowly. He turns back to Rex. "It hurts. It still just really fucking hurts, but, it helps knowing you'll be keeping an eye on them."
28 Jan 2018, 3:41am
Snipes pats him on the back. "Sometimes I feel like I'm keeping an eye on too many things, but they are my current priority. The travel time is going to be a bit much for some, but if everything goes right, the Benefactor will be the last of their worries. I've been trying to keep him busy with litigations and business diversions, so he should be distracted should you have any other 'plans' in the works."

He led Phisto out toward the craft. "On a brighter note, I hope she'll be up to your standards." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I flew her around after...handling...some INRA issues back the day. You may need to update some of the cartographic data, and she's got a new FSD, but other than that, she's original parts."
28 Jan 2018, 3:50am
Phisto nods politely as Rex speaks.  Upon hearing mention of the man responsible for his current situation he struggles somewhat to maintain composure.  Clenching his hand into a fist his brow furrows sharply.

Plans, indeed.  But not for a while yet.

Releasing his fist Phisto breathes out slowly and follows Rex out to the ship.  "She looks amazing, buddy.  I can't wait to put her through the paces."  Despite his somber demeanor, a huge grin crawls onto his face.  "Starlight Exodus, huh?  Got a name of my own picked out.  Hope you don't mind."
28 Jan 2018, 4:01am
Snipes caught the tension at the mention of the Benefactor and didn't push the topic. He then shook his head. "Not at all. The name was a remnant of my younger days, and I'm getting tired of being haunted by ghost stories of my own creation. What did you have in mind?"
28 Jan 2018, 4:08am
"Ferin Sha." Phisto smiles. "It means 'dancing ground.'" Putting his hands in his pockets, his attention drifts away for a moment as he indulges a distant memory. "It was a yearly festival of races. Some of my happiest memories."

He stops for a moment, crosses his arms, and smirks at Rex. "Been thinking about those times a lot lately."
28 Jan 2018, 4:17am
Looking back at Phisto as the ramp of the Cobra extends, "We may often chart our futures by the stars of our past. I hope that the Ferin Sha is far greater for you than she ever was for me, and more so the memories."

He smirked at his friend and tossed him an old datacard. "This old girl needs this to open up, but I programmed her to start with your voice recognition."
28 Jan 2018, 4:26am
Phisto catches the data card and tucks it carefully into his flight jacket inner pocket. Unable to stop smiling, he looks up the ramp and into the ship. He reaches out, takes the railing, and takes one step up into the Cobra. Realizing he has forgotten his manners, he looks back to Rex.

"Sorry, gonna go take a look around." He grins sheepishly. "Mind if I catch up with you later?"
28 Jan 2018, 4:31am
Snipes smirked at Phisto stepping up the ramp, reliving a memory of the guy scrambling into a Pilot's Federation Eagle for the first time. He shrugs. "By all means, go ahead. I've got some contracts to go take care of but I'll be around. I'll see ya in a bit."

He started to walk off, but spun on his boot heel. "One more thing, keep the old girl intact will ya." He winked and walked off towards the warehouses district.
28 Jan 2018, 4:48am
Phisto watches his friend go then walks up the ramp of his new ship. He mulls over Rex's parting words as his eyes go wide and he puffs out his cheeks.

Believe me, I'll do my best. Seen enough action for a while!

A simple Python cut its way towards the slowly rotating station. A viper cut across it's path as the pilot deftly strafed the larger vessel. Overhead the customary greeting to many star-ports broke the silence.

"Ship scan detected."

Corvallu slowed the approach of the Python and allowed system security get on with their business and folded her arms. Next to her Tom smiled and shook his head.

"You know Cor, you could just punch it.."

"I could, but I that wound't be the proper thing to do would it?" She gave him a curt nod and resumed gazing out of the canopy."

The squawk box pipped up with it's usual static and garbled mess for a voice. "Pilot, you're free to go."

"Ya, ya." The young woman approached the station requesting permission to dock which was granted and soon found herself hovering the ship over its designated landing site.

A few moments later the ship touched down and the thrusters cut out. She nodded to Tom.

Slipping out of her Remlock she gave her compatriot instructions, "Keep it ready to go. This shouldn't take too long."

Tom flipped her a thumbs up.

Corvallu adjusted the collar to her leather jacket by popping it out, "Test, test..."

Tom nodded again, "Loud and clear Cor..."

Jubei walked up the ramp of his Fer-De-Lance, the Shin Tenchu, and shut it behind him. Finally back in his ship, the Inquisitor marched along the main corridor looking for signs of any possible infiltration. Checking every nook as he passed by, he was careful to make sure everything was where he left it. When he reached the cockpit, he sat down in his flight chair and pressed a button on the chair’s command console, causing a case to rise up from the floor.

The case stood roughly three feet tall and was adorned in Japanese calligraphy. The scripts translated into various prayers for strength, humility, balance, and peace. They were a reminder that the contents of the case should not be used recklessly or without conviction, that every action should work towards achieving peace. It also acted as a warning to not give in to one’s anger, and to avoid using what was inside for hatred. Jubei looked over the case and the writings with a solemn expression, finally setting his gaze on the top end.

A lone character was centered on the top of the casing, the Japanese symbol ten encased in a circle surrounded by another larger circle that sported a pattern reminiscent of a turtle shell. The Hattori clan’s crest. Tapping the crest’s various parts in a particular order, the Inquisitor activated the case, opening it to reveal a kodachi styled sword. Jubei picked up the sword and looked it over with the utmost care and respect. Seemingly satisfied with his inspection, he placed the sword back and shut the case, causing it sink back into the floor.

The Inquisitor then opened a holofac on his console and tapped out a message:

Suki,

I still wish to meet your benefactor. I was very impressed, seeing her quick wit with Morgan, and the way she walked calmly with Idris. As well, her desire to protect not only her employees and patrons but also the girl who called out for help, was very admirable. I will offer any help I can in dealing with any unsightliness. Please call upon me, especially if Idris ever becomes an issue.

I look forward to seeing you and your mistress.

- Jubei Himura

He sent the message and yawned, the day was more stressful and tiring than he originally thought. His bed was calling out to him.

Jubei arrives back at the Shin-Tenchu after a full day in the habitation ring. He spent the majority of his time observing the daily life of the locals and learning about areas where decent people avoided walking. Such places are the most useful areas to travel if one wishes to remain unseen, but that carries a risk. However, these places are also useful for finding people who don't want to be found.

Closing the ramp behind him, he again checks the ship for any signs of infiltration, and again he doesn't find any. The Imperial stretches his sore muscles, enters his quarters, and immediately strips out of the day's clothing. He steps into the bathroom and turns on the shower, causing a stream of hot water to burst forth from the shower-head above After the refreshing shower, Jubei dressed in some semi-formal clothing consisting of a pastel-green collared shirt, and deep-brown slacks. Once dressed, he makes his way to the cockpit and retrieves his sword, strapping it to his left hip.

Now ready for the night, Jubei exits his ship and makes his way to Citi Gateway's entertainment district. There's always something, or someone, interesting there.

Okay, Commander, vector your approach to landing pad One-Zero.

"Pad One-Zero, Alpha-Juliet-Papa."

A jet-black deLacy Anaconda slid through the Orbis-class starport's access corridor, its holographic figurehead breaching the atmosphere followed by the rest of the 140-meter-long vessel. Red-tinted thrusters fired in tandem as the vessel made its way through the cylindrical dock, curiously devoid of traffic. G-Man lowered the landing gear as he glided the vessel above his pad, correcting his alignment by degrees, then dropped the Anaconda on the pad with a bang.

G-Man winced as his keel kissed the pad, while the Anaconda's hydraulic struts hissed and strained, leveling the ship.

"Not the best touchdown," he muttered to himself as the thrusters spooled down and flickered off, while the pad rolled down into the hangar. "Need to get this throttle looked at."

After a stroll down the Anaconda's gangway and onto the pad, mag-boots activating as dockworkers began mulling over the vessel, G-Man checked his dataslate and scrolled through the station directory.

An advert for the Galactic Bar caught his eye. A perfect place to get lost in, after what he had just seen. G-Man left the docks and made his way to the bar, a heavy lump in his chest where his stomach should have been.

Corvallu's partner, Tom's lifeless body slumped over the computer consul as Corvallu's feed cut out. Blood oozed from a hole in his head. His assassin holsters a weapon and turns to make their way out of the state issued Python.
