Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Kyla's red Cobra MKIII tears through the mailslot faster than what would normally be considered safe. She screeches to a halt above docking pad 41 and taps down elegantly before retracting into the hangar.

"I swear," she says as she stands up from her pilot's seat. "If that traffic controller calls me 'love' one more time..."

She strolls down the boarding ramp of her Cobra. "Whatever..."

She pulls out her data slate. The screen lights up and starts tapping a message.

Hey Goodie Two-Shoes! I'm here!

She slips the slate back into her jacket's inner pocket before exiting the hangar toward the shuttles.

"Deadeye?" Adam echoed almost instantly, taking a slight step backward and canting his head to the left as he listened to his explanation. The explorer's lips tightened into a small wince. Confusion and a little bit of astonishment was written all over his face. Given, Adam had no proof to the claims, but he didn't seem to have proof against them either. Looking into the news would clear that up. The Bubble was a strange place. A lot could happen in the span of a few months that would go right under and explorer's sensors.

Adam stepped forward and held up both hands. "I'll be honest, Aune, I had no idea. Listen, he had the parts for cheap, so I bought 'em. Ain't exactly many of those floating around anymore. Lot can go under my nose for six months and I try not to judge. I'll look it up on their local Gal-Net sometime, but..."

The explorer trailed off briefly as the cogs in his head clicked around. Then he blurted out the next bit. "Wait, did you say -previous- employer?" Adam shifted his stance again, more of that confusion showing through. "Should I even ask who or whom they might be?"

Stryker's ship the Vanguard loomed overhead. A monstrous mass of twisted metal, huge jagged spikes and thick plates of metal melded to the hull of the Anaconda. The large man approached the ship and it responded to his presence by lowering its cargo ramp. He stepped onto it with the explorer and it ascended into ship. Inside it was Spartan and dimly lit with sodium like lamps. Intermittently spaced the bare metal walls had large claw like gashes ripped into them. As they walked they rounded a corner and a wall met them with a door inlaid in it. Upon that wall various names had been etched into the metal and a number of those had the same clawed gashes running through in some beastial fasion to erase the name. Among those included Mhera, Freyja, Hideki and Jemine. Stryker paused for a moment considering the wall, then he considered the explorer. Extending a claw from his wicked prosthetic he roughly carved the letters A D A M among the names that were not defiled. Wordlessly he pushed on.

A storeroom of sorts was before them and Stryker picked up his tool box speaking for the first time since they left Adam’s ship. “History is written by the victors. You know this. Galnet won't give you an accurate record of what happened in Njikas. Neither will the powers in that system.” He turned to face the man. “Obfuscation was the daily work of my previous employer.”

Following, Adam placed his hands into the pockets of his black and red jacket, eyes wandering from place to place of Stryker's vessel. In comparison, it was in total contrast to the matte white of the Ghost Orchid. Instead, the Vanguard had a presence about it, massive and imposing in a somewhat monstrous fashion with the massive plates of metal welded to the hull. The ship, quite honestly, stunned the explorer. He hadn't seen anything like it before and it was so different than his own ship that he was at a loss for words. But his eyes gave away his curiosity as they darted about and took in all the details.

When Stryker paused, Adam paused. Adam watched as Stryker pondered the named and began to carved out the letters. A D A M into the hull. He was about to speak before Stryker pushed on, following but passing one last glance at the names both scratched away and complete. One he swore he heard from the local bar some time ago when he first landed. But Adam said nothing.

Finally when Aune replied, Adam listened. "Guess it might be a bit much to ask who your employer was then?" Adam spoke softly, mouth curling off to one side into a small curious expression. "I don't mean to pry, but it sounds like you and your employer have some history. That is, besides the fact the they were your *previous* employers, I mean."

Adam glanced around once more. "Don't suppose you need help carrying anything?" The explorer chuckled beneath an exhale, taking his hands out of his pockets.

After hitching on his tool belt the large man studied the explorer. He turned and shouldered a large plasma cutter and strapped it to his back. Straightening up he whispered “Tomrum Häxa. That is what I call her. Tomrum Häxa.”

Stryker took a step towards Adam, and tilted his head to look past him. In the doorway was what could be considered something dog-like. The beast's shoulder rested at a man’s midriff. Its head thick and blocky, the muzzle short blunted and filled with thick teeth. The ears were short almost spike like and it had 2 sets of milky white eyes set apart from the bridge of its rough nose. The head was attached to a thick neck and a powerful torso. The front legs were longer and ended in large hooked claws. It’s back sloped down ending in a set of 4 short and stocky legs and a thick tail. The entire animal was covered in a ruddy brown-red scales. But not the smooth scales of a snake; small sharp articulated scales that the beast could raise and rattle.

Stryker’s voice was level, “Cerberus, kommer.” The creature heeded the man’s words and trotted up next to him sitting on his right. It’s ghostly eyes fixed on Adam. Stryker lowered his mechanical claw and gave the animal a scratch behind the ear. It responded by making a kind of warbling growl and opened its maw. A thick black tentacle like tongue wrapped itself around the artificial forearm.

“I have done terrible things Adam.”

"Tomrum Haxa." Adam echoed with a slight nod towards Stryker, once more returning his hands to his pockets seeing that the bodybuilder clearly didn't need help carrying anything. "I'll be sure to keep that name in..."

The explorer's eyes shifted behind him as he heard the patter of heavy feet against the metal flooring. His torso turned and his neck shifted to gaze upon what Adam could only assume was a pet of some kind. It was a very strange pet at that, at least to Adam. He gazed at it, eyes wide, taking in all the alien features when it trotted passed. When the creature stared with those ghastly white eyes, Adam couldn't help but stare back. Curiosity, nervousness, and a bit of excitement all evident on his face. His head leaned forward slightly, still trying to understand what exactly he was looking at. Adam's eyes would shift to Aune then back, and then back to Aune. "This your pet then? Cerberus, if I heard you right?" Adam chuckled, his laugh just slightly shaky when Stryker scratched the creature behind the ears. "What is he?"

Adam watched for a few longer moments the interaction between the pair before he finally smirked. "You know, I used to have one of those winged-cats. Ever seen one of those?" A light-hearted, but still somewhat nervous chuckle erupted from his lips. "It would float around the Orchid annoying everyone. The wings were really only good in Zero-G, but good company though."

Breathing out through his nose, Adam continued in response to Stryker's ending statement while his smirk faded softly. "Yeah well, so have a lot of other people." He paused to let the words hang in the air. "Like I said, I don't go around judging. But, based on the fact you told me you're no longer with your employer, seems like you could be trying something different now?"
08 Nov 2017, 5:53pm
“I have never heard of these space cats. Cerebus is quite capable of getting around in zero-g.” His blue eyes gazed down at animal’s long front legs ending in sharp claws. But the one on the medial side was much longer and hooked as if by evolutionary design created to latch onto things and pull itself about.

Stryker studied the explorer’s face and noted the unease written upon it which satisfied his dark twisted psyche. His lips curled into a slight smile.

“He is a Jurf Munhadar Sikhriun.” he thought for a moment. “Best translated as a-” he nodded finding a suitable descriptor “-Cliff Stalker. They are native to Degastani.  Barren desolate waste of a backwater world. I was sent there with the mission to evaluate the possibility of one of our operatives creating a cult of personality. He is quite the Orator, and coupled with his brain-washing techniques he could become very persuasive. I was to make sure that this ‘preacher’ was preaching the dogma of Black Omega to the locals.”

The mechanical claw scratched behind the pointed ear of the beast, pulling the small sharp scales up. The beast made a ghostly and hollow whooping like noise. Its four eyes lingered with hunger upon the explorer. It blinked and the lids were a kind of clear reflective nictitating membrane.

Stryker was feeling more at ease being in his “world,” a place where he was in control. Where he could decide how to respond to the conversation with whatever means he saw fit. The mechanic's demeanor became more relaxed as he burdened the heavy load.

“It is said that Pegasi changes people. Do you think people can change? Do you think after committing atrocities one can atone for their sins?”
09 Nov 2017, 4:21am
"A Jurf Munhadar Sikhriun, Cliff Stalker?" Adam echoed once more, breathing out his nose heavily and removing his hand from a pocket in his black and red jacket. It gently and slowly extended toward the creature, palm down, but still slightly shaking as the Explorer attemptedto be somewhat acknowledging of it. It seemed to be somewhat dog-like, so that was all he had to go off of. Adam continued to meet the Cliff Stalker's eyes, still wearing that same unease, yet tempered by Aune's casual nature around it. "How did you come by, Cerberus then?" Adam questioned, eyes looking to Stryker with an inquisitive gaze. "Surely that must be a story."

Adam laughed and breathed out, slowly becoming more relaxed in Stryker's ship. "But those winged-cats, as they are called, pretty much just a genetic engineering of a regular cat, plus wings. They aren't as impressive as your friend here." The explorer made a gesture to Cerberus."

He then let a faint pause fill the air before he spoke again. ""Do I think people can change?" Adam spoke rhetorically, shrugging his shoulders and pursing his lips to the right and left as if in thought. "Yeah, I suppose people can." Another pause. "Atonement, I guess that depends on the person, but I guess that isn't impossible. But I wouldn't know, to be honest. Not saying that people will forgive and forget, but I think there is certainly credit for trying to make up for something, least in my book."
09 Nov 2017, 5:57pm
With it’s pale eyes fixed upon the explorer, the strange animal made another eerie whooping noise as the hand was offered.

Stryker grabbed the hand and moved it away from the beast. “I wouldn’t do that if I were you. It’s not bonded to you and it’s waiting for me to give it a signal to feed. In the wild they hunt in pairs. One alpha, the other omega. Highly territorial. The indigenous people of Degastani take them as pups. Easier to manage but they loose instinct. But if you can dominate an full grown adult, make it bond to you they are absolutely loyal. But it is unwise to think they are domesticated.

In that moment a man entered into the storeroom. He was tall and thin with short cropped hair of cornsilk. He gave the animal a wide berth. He was a bit nervous. “Commander. I have the profit report of our last shipment.”

“Place it in my ready room.”

“Y...yes sir.” The man backed out of the room and only completely turned his back when he slipped past the threshold.

Stryker returned his attention back to Adam. “My return to Degastani is when I started seeing clearly what Tomrum Haxa had done. The web that she had spun is beyond anything anyone could imagine.” His claw moved under the animal’s neck.

“If I understand you, you’re saying that you’ve never done anything in your life that required forgiveness?”

Adam stuffed his hand quickly back in to his pocket, letting out another bit of nervous laughter as Cerberus let out a whooping sound. "N-Noted." The explorer chuckled simply, offering a half-smile to Aune. "Consider me learned now, don't pet the Jurf Munhadar Sikhriun, Got it. One hundred percent." Nodding, Adam returned his gaze to Stryker, watching the two carefully once again. It was quite clear from what Aune stated what had happened between him and the Jurf. He got the picture. Alpha. Omega.

When the voice from behind came, Adam turned his head and listened to their short exchange. His curious expression deepened, but he didn't say anything, at least not yet. Not his business. But when Stryker spoke to him once more, Adam couldn't help but inquire. "Sounds like it's a rather large web." Adam replied with a curt and short nod. "Is the web still up? Sounds like you cut yourself free."

The explorer then shrugged and breathed out his nose as if to sigh. He then laughed, quite warmly at what Aune had said. "Me, doing nothing that I needed forgiveness for? Adam chuckled, flashing a wide grin before he paused, the smile faded, and he sighed. "I wouldn't say I've never done anything wrong, no. That's not what I mean. I know a few women who would love to kill me, but that's my fault. Some don't seem to fancy explorers vanishing for six months. Er, but I've done a few things here and there..." He trailed off, wincing as he tried to make sense even of what he was saying. "...I guess I've never done anything comparatively to need to seek out forgiveness, I suppose."

"Does that make sense? I don't think I made any sense."
10 Nov 2017, 2:11am
Stryker canted his head slightly. “Women who would love to kill you? Do you mean that literally? What could you have done to warrant that?”

He continued to afford the beast his affection with more scratches.

Strykers voice was serious, “Did you love those women? Why didn't you take any of them with you. I can't imagine them turning down a chance to explore wondrous new places.”

He thought about Mhera for a moment. The idea had crossed his mind that perhaps he and the red headed scientist would explore some of the region around Jacques Station. But all that seemed so long ago.

“It wouldn't be so lonely for you.”

Adam scratched at his chin, laughing, then shaking his head. "Literally, well, probably not." He replied, still grinning. "I guess I mean they wouldn't be exactly happy to see my face again. But, I wouldn't say I loved them, heck, I wouldn't say they loved me either. Things just sort of happened. I don't see any shame in that. Given, I could've said "Good-Bye" or something."

The explorer paused and slightly frown, leaning against the door frame and letting out a breath. "Would I love to take them with me? Sure. Of course I would." With his other hand he began to motion, gesticulating his explanation. "But when you tell 'em about the facts, exploration becomes less appealing. Something goes terribly wrong out there. You're done. That's it." Adam stated, eyes shifting to Stryker in probably one of the more serious stares he had ever give him. "There is no search and rescue,  no limping back to a station, none of that. People are just gone. It happens all the time. People just don't come back and no one is the wiser."

Another sigh. "It's you, your ship, and your crew if you have one."
11 Nov 2017, 1:50pm
The large man nodded. He understood, the one night stand. He had quite a few of those but never thought that the people he slept with wanted to kill him for it. They if they had reason, it would have been for legitimate reasons. He shrugged his broad thick shoulders as he continued to scratch Cerberus under its thick scaly neck.

“I thought there were safeguards to help explorers out in the deep black. What's the point of an AFMU? Granted it doesn't do squat for your hull but still? If you're playing checked with asteroids you deserve what you get. But I can see the appeal to the endurance of it all.” He looked down at the milky alien eyes then back to Adam.

“Maybe that's why I want to get away from the spider. The only real escape, besides the final escape.” he paused again for a long moment. “Running hasn't worked. I could go back to Degastani. Back to the clan I had won in honor, back to my-” he finger quoted “-husband.” But he shook his head as if the idea was idiotic.
13 Nov 2017, 12:57am
Adam let out a single and loud laugh that echoed through the room before he returned Stryker's shrug with one of his own. "Playing chicken to pieces of floating rocks and ice isn't exploration." He replied, continuing to motion with one hand while the other remained casually within his pocket. "Sure, those devices help you. But you ever seen a black hole up close? Yeah, your ship has an emergency stop, but it only works up until a point."

Sighing, Adam slouched a bit and ran a hand through his auburn hair before chuckling at Aune's words. "It's an escape for sure. It's quiet, peaceful and awfully beautiful whichever direction you go. Spend the night in a Nebula sometime, you won't regret it."
13 Nov 2017, 4:40pm
Stryker took his claw off of Cerberus. "Lämna mig" he said. The beast raised its head and made a strange alien noise in its throat before climbing with ease up the metallic scaffolding of an overlook perched above the bay and disappear through a dark door.

The large man then turned his attention back to Adam. "Any nebula you recommend besides the Pleiades. The last thing I want to do is spend the night with those Thargoid things." Shifting the weight upon his back he made his way out of the ship.
