Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Amata smirked. "Well, they do seem to know your names and ship IDs, but are unaware of my existance yet. Guess that means we all should leave on the Astarte while we still can. Once we did they will add me to the list asap as well though." She ponders for a second. "I have an idea for after we left, but I'm not sure you'll be too fond of it."
24 Jun 2020, 8:48pm
Jason furrowed his brow and narrowed his eyes. "Huh. I'm wanted for questioning regarding people I've never met. Interesting. Wrong place wrong time, I guess." He looks up at the others. "We do have options, but trying to exercise any of them while we're here is going to be very difficult. More than anything else, we need time. And we won't have much if we remain within the closed system of this station." He looks to Amata. "Heading to the Astarte sounds like a plan."
24 Jun 2020, 9:21pm
Ao nodded at the suggestion of getting the hell out of dodge;
"What did you habe in mind Amata?"
24 Jun 2020, 9:53pm
Amata nods. "Very well. First we need to find this Doctor Nymei and this Creamy Goodness. Once we left the station we'll head to my homeport of Stephens Enterprise. With my family being clients we should be safe there for one or two days due to our influence. I have a spare passenger cabin lying around there, and after it got fitted and we stockpiled enough food cartridges to last us at least two months we'll leave again.

The thing is: Whoever is hunting those two obviously has quite a lot of power, money, influence and tech and knows a lot about them. We on the other hand know nothing yet, until we do we cannot strike back. And with our ships being marked like that," she points at the screen, "we need to stay out of inhabited systems for a while. So our best option is to stay off the radar until our associates," she looks at Jason "like your Angels, try to figure out who these attackers are. Once they do and we got the intel we can plan our next step. For safety reason we'll not tell them where we're headed though."

She then smirks. "Which will be an uninhabited system I know that for some odd reason has a listening post in it. I stumbled across it while getting my ship engineered. We can use it as a relay to monitor all communications inside at least 1,000 lightyears. Your contacts will just need to head somewhere nearby and send their intel into the general communication channels. Thanks to the listening post we will get that data. What we do afterwards will depend on said data." She then sighs. "The part you may not like though is that it means sitting on some barren planet's surface stuck inside a ship for a long time until we get that intel or run out of supplies. If the latter happens first though they will most likely had to scale back that manhunt on us, which should give us enough time to resupply and go into hiding yet again, or at least provided us with enough time to come up with a better idea to turn things into our favour."
24 Jun 2020, 10:26pm
Ao let his usual tick get the better of him while deep in thought;
"That is not bad shout, I'm no stranger to being aboard ship for extended periods, did the Colonia run before the engineers began to surface, 22kly jumping 11ly at a time...takes a while I can tell you."
"But I'm concerned about the feeling of the noose slowly tightening while we are hiding, plus there is no guarantee Jason's transmissions to yourself have gone unnoticed....our adversary could well be hoping we'll head for your ship first...no matter what we do, we run the risk of getting caught or having to fight our way out...your covas is fitted with a recall and site to site ship transit function right?" Asked Ao, the beginnings of a plan starting to shape in his minds eye...
24 Jun 2020, 10:34pm
Amata raises an eyebrow. "Sure, but why?"
24 Jun 2020, 10:46pm
A grin split Ao's face;
"Station security will be looking for manned vessels leaving the station and scanning them as they leave...but what if we didn't leave in a ship? Human bodies are too small and don't show up on ship sensors...the brewer drydock where the Star Wolf is moored is only a few kilometres from the station, it's risky, very risky...but we could blow out one of the service airlocks and freefall towards the brewer dock...one mistake and we'll die...if we miss...we'll die...but if we get it right,
The Wolf can preform a random 500ly jump as soon as the drives are warmed up...untraceable and puts us as far away from this station as is possible in one go.
Your ship won't set off any of the stations sensors when leaving as it will be unmanned..."

"The only problem will be this creamy fella, he's hurt, and bad, and according to what the young lady said an FSD jump will mess with her treatment of him...but at least aboard the carrier we'll have a full compliment of capital class defences between us and our enemies until he's well enough to make the jump..."
24 Jun 2020, 10:52pm
Amata smirks: "One problem with your plan though: Carriers are not very low key and show up on every map once they enter any system, even if it is uninhabited. And with your name on that list they propably already know that you have a carrier nearby. So unlike my plan they will know instantly where we are as soon as you exit hyperspace, 500ly away or not." She shakes her head. "No, I think leaving on my ship is the better idea." She looks at Jason. "Guess your voice will decide which plan we'll follow."

Creamy Goodness III
“If you would be so kind as to escort me to that maglev station I think I will be able to make it to the Highlights Motel after a sit-down in the carriage”

Nerys nodded. "Let's go" she said, making sure to speak clearly, slowly and with an high volume. "And remember to stay close to my wrist" she repeated. She had already said that, but she didn't want to take unnecessary risks. It wasn't a big danger, but without the control signal from her scanner, the nano-machines would stop in the middle of the emergency procedure.

Behind them, the docks were a mess, with security officers swarming everywhere, and above them the smoke of the explosion was still swirling in complex mathematical spirals thanks to the station rotation and the gravity gradient.

What happened to the others? There was Jason, that other man, and... it has been all so sudden. How can I contact them now that Celeste is offline? Nerys realized that she was totally lost on the station without her COVAS.

They reached the maglev station without incidents. "Where now, Creamy?"
25 Jun 2020, 3:07pm
“Up to the habitation level, just a stop beyond the one for the bar please doctor” replied Creamy doing his best not to let his knee stop him from hobbling at a fair pace.

The ride was not as relaxing as Creamy usually found the maglev and his company was still more distant then he had been used to, but at least she was sitting close to him. He had to remind himself this was not just a rind to the club. The Highlights Motel was a squat three-story unit that had seen better days. Inside the reception, a heavyset man sat behind a secure kiosk. Beside him was an even bigger man that was there to look dangerous and he was fulfilling that role perfectly.

“CG!” Called the man behind the safety glass “What da fuck you been doin?”

Although Creamy had done his best to clean himself up there was still plenty of evidence he had been in a fight. The big guy put down the slate he was reading and watched Creamy and Nerys, the doctor’s wrist computer particularly.

“He’s ya replacement” said the man behind the glass nodding to the bouncer “Not as good lookin as you, but he takes care of things pretty well”

“We need a room please Travis” breathed Creamy leaning on the counter. Travis Looked Nerys up and down and leered at her. “Not like that you lurid pervert. Now would you be so kind as to extend me a curiously?”

“Oh er right, yeah. Sorry CG. Put ya stick in the slot… “ Travis saw the expression on Creamys’ face when Creamy patted his pockets. Travis rolled his eyes, consulted a screen and pressed a call button.

“Kirsty, you got anyone booked?... Good, put on clean plastic bedding, and get two large bottles of water..  No, someone will pay for ya lost time won’t he?” Said Travis giving Creamy and the Doctor a hard look.  “Room 23B CG, off ya go”

“One more thing Travis” said Creamy with as much levity as he dare “There is a slim chance we will have undesirable..”

“Yeah, I get it. Well now you own me too don’t ya your loodship? Now gimmi ya thumbprint and get up there before I change my mind”

When Nerys and Creamy arrived on the correct landing, a young woman was leaving room 23B wearing a gown and not much else. Nerys was a bright girl and was under no illusion she hadn’t worked out what sort of place this was. He just hoped he could explain why he was so well received. Sometimes the truth sounded very much like a lie. Creamy put his thumb on the door and opened it for Nerys.

Creamy had undressed to check his knee, it was blueish purple and swollen but thankfully he found no damage to his new trousers.  Just as Nerys was about to give her professional opinion on something that actually mattered, her pad sounded its voice message tone. The name on the screen was Dr. Rajagopal, the doctor that had let Nerys take over when she had saved the life of the dockworker that had lost his arm.

The act of kindness hadn’t been forgotten by the rest of the dockworkers now her ship was in their dock.

"1... 2... 3..."

Everything was quiet. As seconds had turned to minutes, all he could hear was the faint hum of the ventilation fans circulating the air. The silence was tugging on him. He looked to the bottle of smokey whiskey beside him. Almost empty...? Hadn't this been a new bottle...?

"7... 8... 9..."

The swig of liquor burned in his mouth and throat, but it helped calm his nerves. Nerves? What was he nervous about. He didn't get nervous in the heat of combat or when he usually smuggled goods. Why was this different?

"13... 14... 15..."

The station suddenly came into view as the ship slowly rotated around. It's not that it was a shock, but the station was so distant now that it was hard to make out with a naked eye by now. As the station disappeared out of view again he closed his eyes and started internally counting the seconds for its reappearance.

His body suddenly jerked and his eyes flashed open. He heard LEO pronounce that hardpoints had been deployed, but he payed little attention, scanning his radar for the enemy that had rammed him. There was none. He could feel his heart thump and the adrenaline course through his veins. Whoever had hit him was a dead man! With night-vision on, he started to look in all directions while engaging the thrusters, increasing his angular velocity significantly. The enemy ship couldn't hide for long! He still didn't see anything...

"LEO... Report status on shields"

"Shields are at 100%"
the COVAS responded immediately. Ender hesitated a few seconds, then looked back on the radar. There was nothing there. Nothing at all. Not even the station... FUCK! How long had I passed out? Was it seconds? Minutes? ... Hours? He looked at his communication log, then to the ship time. It had been almost 20 minutes... At the speed the DBS drifted at just over 400 m/s, that was about 500 km away from the station... He swore silently to himself and plotted a new trajectory. Fifteen minutes... He could make that. He opened up a secure channel and sent a brief message.

"T-15 minutes. Await further instructions."

What had happened? He still didn't know, but the old man might need his help. It'd have to be an anonymous docking this time: His ship ID might have been compromised. Cargo extraction could be arranged later.

Void stood in a dark alleyway, boot rested on the wall and arms crossed. He stood just far back enough to where any passerby would not see him without a moment's more of strain. He felt somewhat safe out of the prying eyes of those around him. He tapped his finger on his elbow. Where was Jason? Sure he could have been looking for quite a secure place, but it had been quite a bit of time since they had parted. Perhaps... they had simply ditched him? He shrugged. It only made sense, seeing as how he had tried to interrogate one of his friends. "Well... shit," he muttered to himself, pushing off of the wall. So hard to find reliable friends these days. With whatever situation he had been caught up in though, he couldn't decide if it were worth it or not to continue pursuing, but something about it all seemed... off. He had continuously played back the event in his head with all of the information he knew, even with what little he had that is. There had to have been a piece of the puzzle that was missing. Why would the explosion happen right after the situation Jason had encountered, if the time table the security agent had given him were true. Perhaps... a distraction for something? The distant possibility was there, but it was a stretch to say the least. Or... was it? It was completely unmanned, so unless the ship had major malfunctions with its fuel tank spontaneously and it just so happened to... no that was even more a stretch.

Void sighed. What would even come of him helping here? If it were something that completely involved Jason or whoever else was at that pad. It was their problem, not his. He had only happened upon it all by chance anyway. There was nothing stopping him from Boarding the resolute and leaving for another station; Maybe one with a decent club to play in. They were only Imperials, anyway. One word of Void being a fed and they would show the true colors of their hatred. It had happened before with people he had thought were friends, so what stopped it from happening now? What was the point of even trying to mingle with others again anyway? He sighed as he stepped out of the alley, bound once again for the docks. The red ribbon solemnly danced just beyond his vision. Mingling with others was the reason why he had met her, the only person he was ever really comfortable with in his co-pilot's seat. Mingling with others had been the death of her, too. Were it not for those "bounty hunters" they had decided to help, she would still be here. A tsk escaped him. The one damn good Imperial he had met, and it was the most personal casualty he had ever experienced.
He found himself standing in front of his pad again. His ship had already finished repairs, and stood proudly on the pad once again, as if beckoning him to go for another adventure. He could almost feel the vibration of the multi-cannons shredding rounds off at enemies he pursued, he could feel the pressure of the boost, the impact of a well placed ram...

He sat on the ground in front of his ship. a melancholy frown invading his expression. He couldn't help but sit and watch the ships leave and enter through the station... back and forth... as monotonous as it was, it was still relaxing. Every pilot in and out of the station had their own story to follow, their own issues to deal with, and their own problems to solve. The bubble was a big place, and the galaxy even more so. Even when one path hit a rut, everyone else's would continue on, all but ignoring the fail. Perhaps that's why he enjoyed his days in combat so much... it was the rush of excitement, but also the knowledge that, as minuscule as you were on the battlefield, you could make a difference if your heart was strong enough. Even if it was your last day in battle... better to die fighting that live cowering...

He shook his head. All this, and this is what i can't decide upon... helping random pilots i don't even know, or continuing on with my day...

No answers came to him.

Jason mulled the matter over for a moment, listening to both of the others. Then, slowly, he nodded.

"Amata's name isn't on the list. Therefore, they won't be looking for us at Steven's, at least not right away. And there is another refuge or two I can think of past there. That seems the plan most likely to get us all to safety."

He produced his hand terminal and scrolled through the contacts. There had to be something in this list. A thought occurred and he looked up at Amata, a little abashed.

"I'll have to finish tuning the Astarte's thrusters later, by the way. I just realized I left the Mechanical Equipment and Chromium wiring in the bay with Nerys's ship."
26 Jun 2020, 4:09pm
Amata smiles. "Don't worry about it for now, this is more important as lives are at stake."

She then turns towards Ao again. "I think your carrier may still be a useful asset. See, while highly unlikely the chance still exists that those who are hunting us may find the system we'll be hiding in anyway. It will take them a while to find us in that sytem though, even longer if we stay on the surface of a planet. That should give your carrier enough time to jump in and serve as our panic room and getaway vehicle. What do you think?"
