Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

It was true, now they were in limited supply Creamy was trying hard to hear every word. Some important words made their way through the thousand questions oddly counterpointed by a strange emptiness in his head.

The words “Not immediately” and “but now I feel... empty. Useless” gave Creamy reason to relax, and something to talk about too. She wasn’t going anywhere right now and she was in need of comforting. Her self-doubt was territory he was familiar with, right now Nerys was just a little girl that missed her dad.

Creamy relaxed bowed his elbows out and put his hands on his thighs letting his eyebrows knit as he gave Narys an exaggerated appraising look.

“Did you forget what I said about you when I asked you if you’ve ever stood in front of a mirror and appreciated yourself?"

Creamy paused for a moment doing the best impression of an impatient teacher he could muster.

“I think you have, haven’t you? Well, it’s all still true Doctor” he continued wagging finger across the table at Nerys

“A pirate that missed an easy interdiction, some hansom lord of the empire that would still be working in a bar, and the man sitting in a hospital still alive to pick out his new cyber-arm will gladly espouse the many admirable qualities of Nerys Nymei. Just think, she did all that while just passing by don’ch know? Imagine what you’re capable of if you really want to make a difference. Hmm?"

Creamy left the rhetorical “hmm” hanging between them while he enjoyed odd glance Nerys was giving him when she could draw her attention away from the cup in front of her.

“Now let me tell you a little something about men that we men really would prefer women didn’t know. When there is something we would like to protect the women we.. care for from, we want to hide you in a vault, in an underground fortress surrounded by loyal guards”

He really hoped she didn’t catch him stumbling of his choice of words, but he did need to let the silly image settle in the doctor’s mind before he continued.

“Now I bet that’s very annoying form your point of view, but it’s no picnic for use either. We know it’s bloody stupid, but it’s also genetically hard wired into every man with spu..juice in his bal.. body”

Watching his turn of phrase really was quite difficult, he was used to saying whatever came to mind. Creamy also couldn’t help feeling he was talking a little loud too. He lowered his voice, dropped any hit of silliness and thought about what happened to them back in Robigo. Creamy let his feeling write themselves on the line of his face.

“It’s as impossible for us to resist that impulse as it would be, not take the next breath. What’s more, we don’t act like that because we want to show how strong we are, or because we think women can’t deal with it. We do it because we are terrified we are not going to be strong enough to stop harm coming to you, and having to see that happen would simply be too much”

Creamy waited for Nerys to look at him.

“Your dad didn’t leave you, he’s protecting you from something. Besides, he did give you the ultimate sign of freedom and trust. A Spaceship”

The smile he was wearing now warmed his cheeks and he hoped it comforted Nerys too.

“If your dad didn’t know how capable and strong his little girl really was, he wouldn’t have encouraged her to face the hungering void with nothing but a thin layer of alloy and pressure seals between her and mortal danger. He gave you the Winder because he knew you would turn it into a future”

Rationally, Nerys knew that it was not true.

Her dad... stepdad technically... did not give her the Sidewinder. She just found it in the very short list of remaining assets after his abrupt disappearance.

In a night, he had emptied the bank accounts, sold the house, revoked all the credit lines. Nerys had gone to bed wealthy, and had woken broke, alone and puzzled.

But yet, the whole situation was so strange and unexplainable that it was impossible even to feel angry or betrayed.

And... Creamy's word were exactly like the tea she was sipping: hot, comfortable and reassuring. She felt the moment of despair silently retreating into a small corner of her mind.

I need to practice Nerys thought. In the next weeks, I'll be completely alone. I can't get caught up in depression and there will not be Creamy to help me.

This last thought hit her in full.

There will not be Creamy.

"Thank you" she said, swallowing.

And he said... he cares for me. He cares for me.

Suddenly she blushed. "I... needed these words" she said, with a smile. "I am feeling really better now."

Finishing her cup of tea, Nerys found the courage to lift her eyes right into his. "But now you must allow me to check your hearing" she said. "It is clearly giving you problems, and I cannot allow this. Would you do me the honor of being the first patient of my brand new onboard tiny infirmary? First and hopefully last one, since I'll be alone on the ship."
08 May 2020, 4:28pm
"Pardon?" Said Creamy

A big silly Cheshire Cat grin crept across his face.
08 May 2020, 10:10pm
Nerys snorted, rolling her eyes, but with a smile.

"Oh, when it's too much it's too much" she said, suddenly standing up and taking Creamy's hand in hers. "Read my lips: now you'll come with me, and I won't take no for an answer."

Reaching into her pocket, Nerys threw some coins on the table. "Please excuse us, Miss Fillworth. I'll return him back better than before."

The old lady smiled. "Oh, take your time, miss Nymei. And have a good afternoon!" she added with a wink.

Outside, still holding Creamy's hand, Nerys headed towards the hangar bay.
08 May 2020, 10:50pm
"I'll come with you and you won't take go-go dancers? Well yes, I don't think they could help at all, and I never argue with medical professionals" said Creamy stuffing his slate back into his pocket.

Still wearing a silly grin, he leaned back to slow Nerys a little and dropped a cred-stick beside the coins. Creamy always left the old dear a lil extra gratuity.

He caught his reflection in a mirror on the way to the docks, he looked .. goofy was the best description he could apply. Watching Nerys' hair sway as she led them through the pilot's market, Creamy tried to set his face back to suave.
He did suave very well, but this time he wasn't just trying to impress, he was aiming to look like the sort of guy that should be accompanying the doctor.

Creamy was also eager to see what Nerys had made of his seldom-used ship. It was odd to think that she would be alone in deep space, in what used to be his bed. A chill rand down his spine; had Creamy left anything in his bedroom? If there was a place Creamy would have kept anything he'd prefer Nerys not to find, it would have been the bedroom. He looked at his hand still being held tightly by Nerys. If there was anything in there, she obviously didn't mind or the ship fitters had taken it in Nerys' redesign. His old room had probably been recycled already.

Creamy relaxed and his face slipped back into goofy.

Totally in medical mode, Nerys entered the landing bay 12 still holding Creamy's hand.

The Diamondback Explorer was almost unrecognizable. Freshly painted in red and yellow, with a big LAKON sign on the side, the ship was surrounded by steel scaffoldings and its service panels were almost all open.

"Celeste, I'm home" she said, and the access ramp lowered gently with an hiss.

"Good evening, Commander" the COVAS said with her French accent. "And welcome back, Mr. Goodness".

"Something to report?" Nerys asked.

"Yes, Commander. Mr. Sanson says that the Fuel Scoop has been installed correctly. He is still waiting for the AFMU units from the supplier. Estimated time, seven to ten days".

"As expected. Okay, now close everything and power up the infirmary. We have a patient".

"Aye, Commander."

The ship's internal had been totally restructured. Nerys had not installed a true cabin for herself, preferring the "open space" solution that there was also in the Sidewinder. In the smaller ship, it was a forced choice: here, it was more a matter of personal taste. There was a small kitchen, a bed, a real bathroom, and a "living room" with a table, a sofa, an entertainment screen, and even a small library with true paper books. The only closed space was the "infirmary", actually a small cubicle, more or less half the size of an economy passenger cabin. Inside there was a crossing between a dentist chair and an examination table, so brand new to be still partially covered by transparent plastic.

"Don't be scared" Nerys said with a smile. "It seems a Frankenstein monster, but it is actually very comfortable. It cost me fifteen trips to Belalis, selling fruits and grain, but it is worth it."

Nerys added: "Maximum respect for the local doctors, but they are a bit overwhelmed and under-staffed right now. The Medical Ward is equipped for heavy accidents, like severed arms or recovered emergency pods... I heard they found one last night... but for this kind of problems they would send you on the nearest planetary hospital. And there, you'd find one of these."

She motioned for Creamy to sit down, and smiled. "Do you trust me? I won't hurt you, promised."

Outside the ship, two pairs of eyes watched the closed access ramp.
11 May 2020, 11:10pm
It was a relief and a shame to Creamy. There was nothing left of the Bones Jumper other than the shell and the cockpit. Creamy took some comfort in thinking of Nerys sailing the endless sea in his ship, but it was clearly Nerys' ship now… without a single trace of his old bedroom thankfully.

Just like the medical bed, the ship was now brand new, without the personal stamp of its owner. It smelled of grease, new metal and plastic. It was taking shape though, and Creamy was happy it seemed to be a good fit for the Doctor. He’d never got on with it himself, the few light-years he’d put on the hull wouldn’t even register on the star map of an explorer.

Nerys Nymei "Don't be scared" Nerys said with a smile. "It seems a Frankenstein monster, but it is actually very comfortable. It cost me fifteen trips to Belalis, selling fruits and grain, but it is worth it."

Creamy looked from Nerys to the medical bed and returned her smile. His hearing had got a bit better since the gunshot in the back of the van, but sounds still seamed blunt and not hearing Nerys voice clearly was starting to get on his nerves.

He prodded the plastic covering wondering if he should remove it before sitting down on the expensive bit of hospital-grade equipment.

Nerys Nymei "Maximum respect for the local doctors, but they are a bit overwhelmed and under-staffed right now.

“Of course I trust you Doctor” said Creamy hopping up onto the bed and tucking his long blond hair behind his ears. “Completely”

Creamy looked at her face a second too long for comfort and quickly decided to change the pace of the moment.

“Now then Doctor” Creamy gave Nerys a serious look. “Do you want me the strip down to the waist or up from the feet?”

Creamy Goodness III

“Now then Doctor” Creamy gave Nerys a serious look. “Do you want me the strip down to the waist or up from the feet?”

Nerys blushed.

Yes, she was expecting the joke. Yes, like all her female colleagues, she had heard it many times. Yes, she knew perfectly well how to answer.

But this was Creamy, so she blushed. Hard.

"No... need for that" she replied with an embarassed smile. "I'll have just a look at your internal ear".

She took a little device similar to a couple of headphones, and put it on his head. "Now comes the difficult part" Nerys said, then she chuckled. "I understand it is an arduous feat for you, but... just try to be silent for ten seconds, okay?"

The device began to beep and hum, while a complicated maze of colored lines appeared on the screen over the chair.
12 May 2020, 9:52am
This was difficult; the medical room was so small Nerys was within reach no matter when she was. Creamy resisted the impulse to hold her hips when she put the pricy looking headphones on him and he found himself counting to ten slowly just to take his mind off the two of them and a bed.

If it was any other woman, she would be on the medical bed with him acting in a very unprofessional way. Her aroma was making him beneath shallow so he could enjoy it. That really wasn’t helping.

Counting in his head “Three four five” didn’t help much either.

Nerys was leaning over a screen while electronic sounds filled his head. She was wearing casual clothes twisting a pearl in her fingers while she read the monitor. Maybe it was something to do with her being in the position of the doctor while he was the patient, but she looked even more attractive than she had in the green dress.

Creamy pressed his lips together so he didn't count out loud. “Sixseveneight”

Even with the primitive impulses increasing his heart rate, Creamy wanted to see her work. Nerys had offered to show him what she does for a living, and he felt she would be very disappointed if he didn’t respect her offer.

-----------------

Yaz took his slate out of his battel-scared leather jacket and checked the pictures of Nerys and Creamy against the bounty notice once more. It was definitely them. He couldn’t believe his luck when he saw the couple making goo-goo eyes at each other at a shoddy little tea and cake stall.

He read the conditions for the maximum payout. The client wanted them both alive, especially the woman. They would give half the bounty for the man if he was killed, but if the woman was harmed, a larger bounty would be put on Yaz’s head. He looked to his partner who was loading stun bolts into his pistol.

“Remember the guy is like a ninja or some crap and the woman is a marksman, markswoman.. .She's good with a gun so take her down first” Yaz commanded.

Harris charged the energy cell of his weapon.

“Cool cool. So, do we take’um on the ship or wait for them to come out?” Harris smiled to himself as he aimed at the bulkhead of the Diamondback.
15 May 2020, 10:40pm
Nerys laughed. "Impressive! You did it! Full ten seconds!"

The pattern on the screen stopped, and some words appeared on it: Scan Completed.

Nerys removed the "headphones" from Creamy's ears, then took the screen from its support... it was actually a tablet... and studied it.

"As I thought" she said. "The technical diagnosis, full of incomprehensible medical jargon, is a damage to the basolateral region of the stereocilia in the organ of Corti."

Then she smiled. "The much more simpler explanation is that you should stay away from the guns... especially those pointed towards you".

Then Nerys pulled out a keyboard from the side of the examination chair, and started to type something that resembled computer code.

"Celeste, give me a spike of energy from the engines, please. I need to program a couple of millions of nanoprobes".

"Aye Commander. Engines ready"

Nerys pressed the ENTER key, and the infirmary lights flickered for a split second. After some moments, a small vial full of transparent liquid silently emerged from a recess in the diagnostic panel.

"Usually, in a hospital, this is done in a couple of hours" she explained "And it requires much less energy. But this equipment is designed for emergency treatments, so you can do it much more quicker... provided that you have a fusion reactor available."

Then, surprisingly, she took the vial between her fingers. "It's quite cold, Frodo" she whispered. "This is the master vial, the one vial to rule them all".

With precise gestures, she inserted a needle on an extremity of the vial and a plunger to the other: the vial was a syringe.

"Now this is the part where usually I have to explain to my terrified patients that yes, I am really a fully qualified doctor, yes, I am going to stick this needle inside their ears, and no, they will feel absolutely no pain. Scout's honor."
16 May 2020, 12:50am
Of course Nerys knew it was a gunshot in a confined space that had.. .. damaged the Bordeaux region of the stereo in the original corgi. She was a doctor for crying out loud, not a bimbo that had got by on her good looks alone. This was the second time Nerys had caught him out telling a lie. If he didn’t get his head on straight and think about what he was going to say, she could stop forgiving him his little foibles.

She was good looking though. Creamy leaned back on the medi-bed and watch Nerys’ face as she explained something technical that Creamy didn’t even start to understand. He was enjoying the enthusiasm and confidence radiating from the Doctor as she worked, completely in her element.

She had just typed something on a keyboard and moments later a little vile was dispensed. Nerys look pleased as she explained something about hospital hours and fusion reactions. Creamy was just watching her lips move, wondering if now would be a good time to put his arm around her waist and pull her in closer when she used an odd voice, and whispered something to the vile. She was at least smiling while she did it, or was that a rictus?

While Creamy was wondering what was going on with Nerys, the vile almost magically turned in to a syringe with an unreasonably long needle. Creamy felt his eyes widen and he shrunk back from the medical javelin in the same way vampires in old horror movies did from a cross.

“Sexythoughtsgonenow” he said under his breath.

Nerys Nymei
"Now this is the part where usually I have to explain to my terrified patients that yes, I am really a fully qualified doctor, yes, I am going to stick this needle inside their ears, and no, they will feel absolutely no pain. Scout's honor."

Nerys held the person-impeller safely with the sharp end, still with its safety cap, away from herself and the suddenly reluctant patient. Creamy didn’t mind needles, and he was determined to make a good impression with Nerys but that thing was huge, and Creamy knew a bit of twisted tissue hurt his ear if he pushed that in a little too far.

“You’re going to stick that in my what?” Asked Creamy transfixed by the brain probe “Umm, little girls can’t be scouts” he finished timidly, leaning back as Nerys removed the safety cover.

------------------------------

Yaz leaned against the hull of the targets' ship and kept watch while Harris started the hack on the airlock security panel. As long as they stayed tight into the ship, its sweptback wings would keep them out of view of the station cameras and the dock staff wouldn’t see them unless they had a reason to come round to the rear on the Diamondback.

“Almost got it Yaz, just wanna bypass the computer indicators so the COVAS doesn’t know the hatch is open” said Harris in a quiet level voice.

“Whatever man, just do your thing and we’ll be trading in our Vipers for someth…”

The sound of the ship's Power Plant cycling up stopped Yaz mid-sentence.

“Ar crap man, their gonna leave. Get that damn hatch open before this bay gets shunted to the surface” Yaz gritted his teeth and growled a command to Harris “Now man”

Nerys laughed genuinely. "Oh, really, don't worry. Look!"

She removed the cover of the syringe and with a precise movement inserted the needle into her own ear, but without pushing the plunger.

"See? No pain" she explained. "There is a precise point in the ear canal where there is no innervation, so you don't even feel the needle. Our teacher in medschool forced us to find it on ourselves, saying that it would have been necessary to demonstrate the technique every time to every patient. And he was right... nobody believes it until they see it with their own eyes."

Nerys took out the needle and sterilized it again with some drops of disinfectant. "And about the content of the vial... it is just a bunch of nanomachines. They are programmed to find the damaged cells of the acoustic nerve and repair them, then they'll shut down and will be eliminated by the body. You'll begin to hear better in ten minutes, and the whole process will last no more than six hours.

---------

Celeste was of course programmed to monitor the ship surroundings, and normally it would have been impossible to approach the ship without being noticed. But the spike from the engines had requested a lot of energy, so many non-essential systems were rebooting , including the external sensors, and the hatch maintenance panel was open like most of the others...
20 May 2020, 12:25am
Harris stopped what he was doing and cocked his head at Yaz before backhanding him across the face.

“The ships covered in scaffold ya dumb mook, they ain’t going anywhere. Now shut up and keep an eye out for security”

Yaz drew his fist back to punch that smug look off Harris’ face, but he didn’t. Harris was a good man for getting past electronic security and reliable in a fight. Besides, he was right; the Diamondback wasn’t going anywhere. Well, not until the marks were safely restrained ready for transport to Vodan and his lads. They wouldn’t need their ship once he had them, it would make a nice lil system taxi for Yaz.

--------------------------------

Now he was feeling like a little kid trying to hide from the scary doctor behind mummy. That wouldn’t do at all. Creamy knew the sympathy vote worked for some guys, but Creamy really preferred to project an image, and simpering weakling wasn’t it. He did his best to regain control of his body language and sat up straight.

“When you put it like that Doctor Nyme, I’m put completely at ease” He lied before he could stop himself “I’m ready when you are Doctor and thank you”

Creamy put his hands on his thighs with his elbows out at the sides. A pose he subconsciously defaulted to that showed off his broad shoulders and sizable chest. He was one of life’s natural posers. When Nerys approached to administer the treatment, he moved his arm. He automatically went to put his arm around her waist but changed his mind and just leaned on the medi-bed.

The Doctor was concentrating on getting the right spot, but she spired a glance to give Creamy a reassuring smile. There was a pressure and Creamy tensed for the pain, but there was none. Nerys was right, it hurt less than injections he’d had before. The Doctor sterilised the needle again and swapped sides to treat his other ear.

Creamy noticed Nerys was looking a little red, and this time, not from nerves. Creamy gave himself a mental slap to get himself in order and relaxed. The Doctor was showing him her expertise, and Creamy was looking forward to demonstrating his. Nerys was leaning down looking into his ear canal, but her eyes were taking in everything. When she glanced at him again, he smiled that smile and she blushed a littel more.

Nerys withdrew the needle and Creamy finely let his hands do what they had been itching to do since the pair had entered the intimately small treatment room together. He placed a hand on her ribs and stroked down until it was resting it on her hip. She was still leaning over, her face level with his, the syringe held uncertainly between them. Creamy held the back of her hand and gently move the shining point from between them keeping her steady slender hand in his as he brought his lips to hers.

He pulled Nerys towards him and didn’t believe what he saw. Were they cursed, or was fate having a really good hard laugh at his expense? A gun in a tattooed hand appeared in the doorway.

“So sorry darling” Creamy sighed to Nerys.

Creamy automatically moved without thinking. Grabbing hold of Nerys’ waistband and keeping the needle pointed away from her, he tossed Nerys over the medi-bed. Once she was traveling towards the floor, Creamy pushed hard against his seat catapulting himself at the gunman. He twisted his wrist and grabbed the weapon with a practiced motion. The disarm would have gone perfectly if another attacker hadn’t been waiting for Creamy and mashed some brass knuckles into the back of Creamys’ head.

A second strike to Creamys’ ribs made him fall to a knee in pain. Yaz didn’t let his advantage pass by and he kicked Creamy hard in the sternum sending him crashing into the medi-bed before he fell to his hands and knees gasping for a breath. Harris raised his gun and pointed it at Creamys’ head.

“Stay down dick hole. You’re not worth half as much as the girl, so I got no problem puittin a hole in that pretty face of yours”

Nerys' world started to spin.

The first time, metaphorically. She had just completed the procedure, and everything had been perfect: Creamy had felt no pain at all, and the tablet was receiving the first data from the nanoprobes: the insertion had been successful and the ultra-tiny machines were already searching for the damage to repair. It had been so perfect and so good than the kiss was not so unexpected...

But then Nerys' world started to spin for real when Creamy threw her over the bed. She landed on the floor with a thud, surprised... and then she saw two unknown men entering the small sickbay and attacking Creamy.

And they had guns.

"What... Celeste, call the dock security!"

Nothing.

In a split second, Nerys realized that the COVAS was not responding. It had been disabled somehow.

Oh shit.

One of the men was pointing the weapon towards Creamy.

Stay calm. Stay calm. You are a doctor and they are menacing your patient. Be professional. Be strong. Be calm.

"Who are you?" she asked, standing up slowly and carefully. "What do you want in my ship?"

Nerys Nymei

"Who are you?" she asked, standing up slowly and carefully. "What do you want in my ship?"

Harris saw the Doctor rise from behind the medi-bed and damn near pulled the trigger on her at once. She wasn’t holding a weapon, and didn’t appear to have a gun on her at all so he ignored Yaz’s advice to stun her. If they couldn’t get the woman’s ship off the station, they would have to take the prisoners to their own ships. Even on this station that would be hard to do without security or some gung-ho pilot interfering; and harder still if they had to carry them.

The defiant confidence she was displaying to Yaz and Harris impressed the Eurasian gunman. Both he and Yaz didn’t look like the sort of people to be questioned. He smiled as if impressed by a child but kept his weapon trained on her torso.

“You as it happens. You’re worth a good stack of credits to someone”

Harris was letting his Polish accent overrule his Americanised voice. He always did when he was working.

“Far more credits than this ass wipe” said Harris momentarily dipping the gun to point at Cream who was still wheezing on floor.

“Enough chatter” interrupted Yaz “Get her cuffed and I’ll deal with the Imperial”

Yaz slipped the knuckle dusters down his fingers as he reached into his pockets to get his binders, but the knuckles got tangled in his pocket as he struggled to free the cuffs.

Creamy was genially in pain. The back of his head where he was hit was throbbing and rolling. He could feel blood cooling as it ran around his neck. His right side ached so much, it hurt to move his arm, and the kick to the chest had knocked the air out of his lungs; he was finding it hard to breathe in. However, he was faking just how incapacitated he was.

Creamy was waiting for an opportunity to get rid of the gun in play, especially now it was pointed at Nerys. The surprise attack had done its job very well. The men had the advantage, but not for long if Creamy could be confident his actions would be fast enough to disarm the gunman. Seeing Yaz struggle to get his hand out of his own pocket, Creamy gasped in a breath, and got a foot under his body and tensed his legs ready to strike.

If he ever got the chance to have another attempt at kissing Nerys, he wouldn’t even try unless they were in a sealed room aboard an empty ship on a distant planet as yet unseen by human eyes, preferably at the bottom of a very deep ocean.
