Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

He didn't hear Nerys lock the door, Creamy was transfixed by the bathroom handle. He knew his hearing was still bad, but he felt confident he would have heard the lock engage. That was a clear invitation to go in and find out if Nerys would appreciate him washing her back, he'd never had that offer rejected before. There was however a feeling Creamy wasn't used to, doubt.

Creamy shook his head and decided to risk straying away from the door a little to grab the pillow off the bed. He placed the pillow behind his head and sat on the chair beside the door. After a moment, he gave the door a gentle finger-light push. It didn't feel locked. He heard the water turn on and then the unmistakable sound of the water running off Nerys' body. He glanced at the handle again and reached out for it and stood up ready to walk in. Again he hesitated clenching his fist to keep his fingers from closing around the leaver. Instead, he grabbed the quilt and slumped back into the chair.

It wasn't that he wasn't feeling amorous, one of Creamys' biggest problems was he was always in the mood. Even girls that enjoyed his attention would remind him there was a time and place. Right now he didn't trust his leg to hold him up if things got interesting, getting personal when laying down would be a different story, that was a self-delusion he could believe.

He flopped into the chair and wrapped himself up in the quilt after he had got his head comfortable on the pillow. Listening to the falling water helped Creamy calm down a little. He pulled a drawer open with his toes and rested his feet on it. Closing his eyes, Creamy fell asleep daydreaming of following the water running down from Nerys' head to her toes.

Amata LireinAmata looks around the "motel's" lobby and sighs. "These guys must be really desperate if they decided to hide in here."

The man behind the counter eyed the people that had just walked in. The man with manners that had asked about CG matched the discretion, and he felt like hed see the flash of a blue greatcoat when the two in front of him had approached the booking office. The one detail he couldn't stop focusing on was, they looked like they had credits. He smiled graciously at the pair of money bags.

"Desperation is our stock and trade miss. We sell relief at an affordable hourly rate for everyone from a nervous first-timer to the most wizened old star-dog hankering for a little company now he, or she.." he said winking at Amata "..is back in populated space"

He straightened his greasy waistcoat and casually re-engaged the safety catch on the heavy blaster.

"And there's no need to look like that. We've kept up with the .. reforms CG forced on us. The guy maybe a bit of a dick, but he knows.."

The man behind the safety of the kiosk turned to the strategically shaved gorilla pretending to be human.

..What did CG call it?" he asked the bouncer.

"Hospitality Management" Rumbeled the one-man motel security "He called it Hospitality Management Mannie"

"That's right" said Mannie in a voice so slick it could oil the landing gears on a fleet of ships "Hospitality management. After his suggestions, the girls and boys are happier, and we get a much better turn around on the punters. Shame he's too nice for this trade, he'd make a killing"

Mannie checked the screen for Kirsty's room. The girl was in the shower and CG was sleeping in a chair outside the door like a loyal dog. Mannie shook his head, that was one hell of a change in the imperial. Mannie pulled the motel's keyboard towards himself and started calculating the bribe.

"Right then, you're expected," said Mannie nodding towards Jason "but we have a strict two people per-room charge and if the other guy I was told to look out for turns up, that's gonna be three people meaning two rooms needing cash upfront. Whats more CG said he maybe bringing trouble, and you are gonna wanna keep ya weapons about ya personages I imagine, so I'll be wanting a security deposit"

The smile he leveled at Jason was so white, his teeth appeared to glow.

"Non-refundable of course. Add to that a little gratitude for myself and the staff to ensure we continue having seen nothing when security or otherwise come asking about you lot, and we have your bill.. .. Oh, CG didn't pay either, so that's three rooms"

Mannie indicated the screen built into the desk on Jason's side of the kiosk. It had a number on it that would have got five rooms in a good four-star hotel including the room service bill.

Mannie pushed a draw containing a universal credit reader out to the public side.

"Please enjoy your stay at the Highlights Motel"

Jason tried very hard not to scowl as the unctuous lobby staff ran their shtick. He had been around the galaxy long enough to know a hustle when they heard it. Despite his dressed-down state, folx like this could smell credits. And between Jason's Imperial ink and Amata's top-tier pristine Remlok, it wasn't that much of a surprise that they were being bilked.

Setting aside the ill-gotten bundle, Jason produced one of his credit sticks. Not the one in his name; he'd also been around the galaxy long enough to learn how to move and hide some of his assets to avoid being traceable when the need called for it. At times, he'd transfer some credits from his account through a few aliases to arrive at the account tied to the stick he introduced to Mannie's reader.

The name Edward Thatch appeared on the screen. Jason upped the amount and looked Mannie square in the eye.

"A little extra for you and the staff. In return: the number of the room taken by Creamy Goodness, and no questions asked."
10 Jul 2020, 5:32pm
Mannie gave Jason a mock bow with many a flourish but didn't bother getting off the stool to do so.

"Always a pleasure to be at the service of the Empire" Mannie turned his attention to the bouncer for a moment "Lovely people, always so polite I find. Don't you?"

The thug just sat down in his chair beside the kiosk and picked up his slate with an off-hand nod to Manni. He grunted something nondescript before getting back to reading the local news net.

Mannie checked his console, telling them *Kirstys room* wouldn't help much.

"Room two thee B. Take the elevator and follow the signs. I'll buzz you in once ya at the right door, the poor guys catching forty winks"

Mannie called after them as Jason and Amata went looking for the elevator.

Hay, I hope him and the girl are ok. He's not bad for a toffee-nosed ass"

10 Jul 2020, 6:50pm
Amata rolled her eyes after the doors of the elevator closed behind Jason and herself. "I really hope this guy refunds you for this. Being in dire straits or not, having you pay a bill like that makes this... 'establishment' look classy in comparison."
11 Jul 2020, 10:49am
Ao exhaled, leaning against the wall outside the motel, nothing beat good tobacco.
He pondered if it was worth entering the motel, or if he would be better off attempting to find another way in, he was sure Rose would expect a damn good explanation for this place showing up on his credit account...

With a high he tapped out his pipe and walked inside, nodding to the staff;
"I'm with the two that just arrived, I know I know, strict two to a room policy, just tell me how much."

Ao's hand rested on the hilt of the sword on his right hip as his left reached for his credit stick in his inner jacket pocket.

(sorry about being away so long guys! changing internet providers took way longer than expected!)

Mannie was greedy but he hadn't stayed in business without learning not to be too greedy. He paid who he needed to pay on time every time, and greased palms where he had to. His boss liked things that way. Mannie even treated talent with something like respect after an informative few weeks with CG as his bouncer. Charging this man after his friend had already paid would be pushing his luck.

"Nar, the other guy covered ya bill. Take the stairs to left, room Two Three B. If ya quick you'll get there with the elevator"

Mannie got back to watching the monitors. The station had a feel about it he didn't like. The sooner CG got this lot out of the Highlights, the happier Mannie would be.
11 Jul 2020, 1:10pm
Ao nodded again
"Thanks" and headed towards the elevator catching up with Jason and Amata

It has been said that the greatest accomplishments of humankind (except, maybe, that thing with apples and gravity) have been discovered in the shower.

Unfortunately, this trick did not seem to work every time, because Nerys did not magically solve the mystery of the attackers and the attempted kidnapping. The only two options she could think of were a case of mistaken identity, or something related to the disappearance of her father, and frankly there was no need to waste water to arrive at this conclusion.

Stepping out of the shower, she dried herself as quickly as she could, then wearing the shirt and the shorts. There was no hair dryer, so Nerys wrapped a towel around her head, put on her glasses and opened the bathroom door.

"The shower is all yours, Creamy" she said, checking again her wrist scanner. Shutdown in progress. Time remaining: 14 minutes.
12 Jul 2020, 1:38pm
Creamy woke up gently and gave Nerys a lil wave.

"Looks like I dropped off for a moment"

He got off the chair and put the pillow and quilt back on the bed then tightened the towel around his waist. Turning around, he appreciated Nerys' legs for a moment.

"It appears you can wear anything well. Shorts suit you" Linking his fingers Creamy stretched his arms out "You seem a little better for your shower, I hope it does the same for me"

Creamy folded his clothes and left them beside the bathroom door with his boots.

"I'll be toot-sweet Doctor. With a little luck, our good samaritan should be here with a flask of Mrs Fillworths tea soon. I good brew will help ay?"

The bathroom was already nice and warm thanks to Nerys not long being finished in there. Creamy put both hands on the tiled wall and the hot water wash over him. By the time he had started singing a recent hit, very well, the apartments' little console bing-bonged closely followed by Mannie's voice on the little tinny speaker. As this was happening in the main room, Creamy was completely unaware.

"Hey, your pals are coming up. I'm gonna buzz them in for ya so they ain't hanging round in the hallway"

Less than a minute later,  the lock indicator turned green and the apartment door chimed as its latch disengaged.

Eventually the elevator arrived at the floor mentioned by the receptionist and Jason and Amata step out, looking around to see if they can spot the room number given to them.
18 Jul 2020, 2:31pm
Seeing the door indicator in a green status, Jason approached the room and waited for the door to open before stepping inside.

"Special delivery!" He tried to keep his tone light. Yes, it was a tense and hazardous situation. But for the moment, at least, they had a moment of respite, and he wasn't intending on spending it making things worse.
18 Jul 2020, 11:36pm
Nerys had heard Manny's announcement from the speaker, so she wasn't surprised to see the silhouette in the doorway. It's nice for once to meet someone who does not want to shoot me.

"Jason!" she said with a smile, standing up from the chair just outside the bathroom door. "Sorry if I don't come closer, but I have to stay within five metres from Creamy..." she pointed a finger towards the shower "...for other twelve minutes".

Then she realized that Jason was not alone. There was... she didn't know his name, but he was the one who had pulled her behind the DBX landing gear... and a tall, beautiful girl with striking blue hair and eyes.

"Oh" she said, automatically blushing with no real reason and trying to adjust the hair still wet from the shower. "Hi. Please come in, come in. Don't mind the mess. It has been a... what's the time? I can't believe it's only been one hour, but... well, I am still a bit shocked. I am Nerys Nymei, nice to meet you".

Am I speaking too fast?
19 Jul 2020, 12:01am
Amata smirked as she saw the redheaded woman who seemed to be a bit bewildered right now. She's kinda cute, she thought to herself, and when the woman was distracted from trying to fix her hair Amata used the opportunity to check out the redhead's legs and backside, emphasised by the shorts she was wearing. and she has quite a few bodily features to go along with that nicely.

"Hello, Nerys, I'm Amata Lirein, just call me Amata. I'm a friend of Jason. We're here to pick you and... Creamy, was it? We're here to pick you two up, then head to my ship and leave the station as we assume that the two of you aren't safe yet."
19 Jul 2020, 1:18am
Out of the corner of his eye, Jason saw Amata's reaction to Nerys, both the way the redhead looked and her general demeanor. He had to smile a little. As much as he wanted to remind Amata that there was a time and place, it seemed that Amata was at least trying to stay focused on the matter at hand.

He stepped around the ladies to lay his somewhat ill-gotten gains on the bed. Two sets of relatively non-descript clothes, a packed lunch large enough for Nerys and Creamy to share, and a small thermos of what Jason hoped was coffee or tea. He hadn't had time to open it and check.

"I wish I could say 'take your time', but the sooner we get underway, the better. The authorities aren't keen on Amata's involvement yet, but I'd rather not take any chances."
19 Jul 2020, 12:57pm
No anti-frizz gel. No styling gel. No leave-in conditioner and Creamy didn’t like the quality of the water trapped in his follicles either; that was just his hair. He fancied he could feel his skin complaining about the care it hadn’t received by drying out and giving serious consideration to forming some wrinkles around the eyes.

His hands were either side of the sink while Creamy inspected the results of his styling efforts in the mirror. His hair was well trained and had fallen into something like the foppish waves he normally sported. He knew it was going to go a little frizzy and he’d soon be swinging his head like a model in a shampoo advert just to keep his fringe out of his eyes.

Something that had been vying for his attention finely broke through the barrier of Creamys’ vanity; he could hear voices on the other side of the door. He tensed feeling fear anger and desperation. He put his hand above the button to open the door and pressed his poor quality ear to the door. Nerys sounded nervous, but that was her normal. If she sounded calm with an extra portion of reasonable and well informed on the side, he would be worried. The people she was talking to were not being threatening, not even quietly menacing.

Creamy, thankfully, relaxed; it must be Nerys' friends, he’d had enough of fighting off gunmen for this month. He couldn’t do anything to make himself presentable for company as all his clothes were on the other side of the door. Underwear and a towel would have to do. Anyway, his birthday suit was finely cut, if a little less defined thanks to the lack of recent exercise. Creamy tightened the towel around his waist and opened the door.

There was the fellow that had seen Nerys and Creamy off when they left for Robigo. His name was one of the ones that began with “J” he was sure. Behind him was a short chap in Blue Greatcoat. Creamy felt the man had been taller at Nery’s ship, Creamy seemed to remember being eye to eye with him at some point. Nerys was nervously arguing with a thermal flask in her flustered fashion that always made Creamy want to watch for a little while before offering assistance. She could be very much like a puppy struggling with stairs.

All this Creamy noticed in the half-second he door stood in the doorway. The lady in the flight suit occupied most of his attention. His face fell into its default swarve and he advanced with a grateful hand out to Jason.

“There you are my good man” Creamy grasped Jason’s hand in both of his “Thank you so much for coming to our aid. What fortune it was yourself in the dry dock what? I don’t know what would have become of us if you hadn’t been there”

Moving on swiftly, Creamy offered his hand to Ao. He was instantly assaulted by the smell of stale tobacco on the man’s clothes, but Creamy wasn’t about to let that stop him from offering his thanks.

“I seem to remember making a fool of myself when you rendered assistance to us. I do apologise if I was rude, I’d been knocked for six and I was not quite myself. Thank you so very much for being on-hand in our time of need.”

Creamy turned like a bird of prey swooping down on its target and he stood directly in front of Amata close enough to be in her personal space. He took her hand and pressed it to his cheek before looking directly into her eyes while he spoke.

“How rude of me, Introductions should be first what? Before you is Lord Creamy Goodness of Summer-Layton in northern territories of Cubeo Three”

Creamy offered Amata a shallow bow and enjoyed the colour of her eyes for a moment before releasing her hand and going to Nerys' side.

“May I introduce the esteemed Doctor Nerys Nymei. A dedicated Samaritan, a surgeon with hands so steady, asteroid impact couldn’t shake them. She also possesses a pallet so refined I weep with envy”

Creamy put a friendly hand on Nerys' arm and smiled at her before continuing.

“I feel have to say, although I’m sure the Doctor will deny it, Doctor Nymei is the hottest dancer I have ever had the pleasure to be overshadowed by. When the music stops, rhythm rests with the indomitable Doctor here” Creamy gently took the flask from Nerys.

“I’ll be mother shall I?”

Creamy looked at the sorry clothes folded up on the bed while he poured Nerys a cup of whatever was in the flask. The garments looked used and there was no evidence of shop bags or packaging of any kind. Come to that the flask wasn’t one of Ms Fillworth’s, there was no hamper she always packed for pilots that wanted her tea and cakes on the go. Creamy felt himself slump a little when he was confident a hairbrush or tin of styling moose couldn’t possibly be handing anywhere in the small pile on the bed. The compression bandages, painkillers, and antiseptic cream he asked for didn’t even enter his mind.

“Beggars can’t be choosers” thought Creamy to himself, and he really was glad these people he didn’t know had come simply because he had asked. The lunch box had someone’s name on it in faded permanent marker, he was confident it wasn’t the name of anyone in this room. He unpacked it and put the most palatable morsels out on the plastic and foil it was wrapped in for Nerys.

“Do make your selves at home. I’m currently blessed to be tethered to Doctor Nymei by enthral bonds but we can all squeeze up”

Creamy sat on the chest of draws and waited for Nerys to finish with the cup while he inspected the clothes he had been brought.

“What’s it like out there? Are the security services eager to interview us?”
