Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Slide back down the ladder and trott up to Jason shaking him warmly by the hand.

"A fellow imperial what! Ya accent put me off the sent, and your a chap living close to the ancestral home. Capital!"

"Now, the first name is my addition to the lineage, but the family brand is a travelers mutation of Goodwin I belive. Amazing what people out here call themselves ay? I met a chap by the name of Killboy Power-Head a few months ago. He said it with a straight face as well bless him"

Point at Jason's pad and look thoughtfully to the ceiling.

"Baron Louis Richelieu you say. Didn't he rule France in the some-teen century and annoy a bunch of dualists or some such? Seem to remember the name from the academy"

Furrow my brow with the strain of remembering my education.

"I may know his daughters.. .sisters... or possibly wife but I can't say he rings a bell. Still always nice to have a dance on the cards. However, I will have to decline until I have the ability to travel under my own steam.. and bought a new wardrobe. Plus a wardrobe to put my new duds in"

Smile brightly at Jason.

"Not quite up to snuff at the mo. Hope to be after the lovely Doctor here has reunited me with my wayward ship. An absolute pleasure to make your acquaintance Mr Frimantle"

Start retrieving my bags.
05 Mar 2020, 4:31pm
Nerys checked her tablet.

Cargo loaded and secured she read. Fuel tanks full. Oxygen tanks full. Navigation computer ready. No station alerts or warning. Normal traffic.

"Well, seems that we are ready" she said with a smile. "Safe travels, Jason, and thank you for your time and everything."

She climbed on the ladder. "Pass me the bags".

OOC: the interior of the Sidewinder is here: https://youtu.be/RfGfBX2gj2g

Nod a bow to Jason and appreciate the unique view the bottom of the ladder affords me for a moment.

"Most kind, although I do feel I should be up there hefting the bags about. Still, only a fool argues with the pilot"

Help get everything packed and secured before setting up my travel seat.

"Once this contraption is tightly fastened we'll be good to go what? Afraid I'll have to used the cargo bay, the cockpit doesn't have the necessary clearance for the seat. I'd be a pancaked on the first jump to Witch Space, and have the lumps smoothed out on exit"
07 Mar 2020, 7:54pm
Totally unaware of the show she was performing, Nerys did an encore climbing the interior ladder from the cargo bay to the upper level.

"Don't worry" she said. "There is no need for you to sleep in the bay. You would smell of Early Grey tea! The pilot seat can be reclined and transformed in a bed for me, while you can use mine. It is not a deluxe hotel, but the trip should take only a couple of days."

"Celeste, begin the pre-flight checks. Take-off in ten minutes".

"Aye, Commander".
08 Mar 2020, 1:10pm
"I couldn't possibly take your bed from you. I'll take the seat and you keep your bed. That'll save any bother with the shower and morning-routine"

Take a look around the Sidewinder.

"I say Doctor, I don't see the evidence of many lightyears. Is this going to be your first .. .thirty jump run?"

Creamy Goodness III

"I say Doctor, I don't see the evidence of many lightyears. Is this going to be your first .. .thirty jump run?"

Nerys nodded. "This is actually a good question" she said, opening the hatch to the cockpit compartment. "As I explained yesterday, my pilot license is brand new, so yes, it is my first run. On the other hand, the Sidewinder spent many years in storage and the frame number is quite old, so it should show its age... yet it seems just exited from the shipyard. Someone, possibly my father, spent a lot of time and money to refurbish it completely. The navicomputer is brand new... not just erased and re-booted, the entire memory module has been changed. Engine crystals have been substituted, and the whole interior had been thoroughly cleaned and sterilized with gamma rays. They told me that the whole procedure probably cost more than the ship itself, so I don't understand the reason for it. Another question for my father... if he is still alive."
09 Mar 2020, 12:43pm
Call through the hatch to Nerys while I pack and set up the travel seat.

"This is a vast galaxy Ms Nymei, there are plenty of places for a chap to be and stay off the radar. You'll find him, I feel you are a tenacious young vixen unwilling to yield simply because the task is Sisyphean"

Finish the seat and head up to the bunk room to put my supplies away.

"This lovely little Winder is yet to get that slightly cooked smell that a well-used Power-Gen and F.S.D infuse. It may have been in storage, but maybe investigating the part numbers on your modules could help? After all, not many people replace parts on an old Winder although plenty of pilots keep them for sentimental reasons. Perhaps the grease monkeys will remember something"

With the last ready-meal put in the fridge, sand with my hands on my hips.

"There we are, all ready. Now I'm a good liner pilot so I'll gladly take a shift at the stick if you fancy. I'm at your disposal Captian Doctor"

Nerys smiled, lowering her eyes.

"Thanks, Mr. Goodness, your kind words are truly appreciated. It's a good suggestion: I'll try to run a search on the part number archives as soon as I'll be able to afford it."

She fastened her seat belts and took the control stick. "And thank you for the offer, I'll surely ask you for some pilot advices! I feel like the first time I had to perform a surgery without a medical robot to help me... These days, everything is more or less automatized but obviously in school you have to learn how to work just with a scalpel and your hands..."

She clicked the swtiches to unlock the magnetic clamps from the landing gear.

"Pad cleared and ready to take off" Celeste said. "Citi Gateway says we are free to go".

Vertical thrusters... here. Not too much.

Her left thumb pressed the thrusters button on the throttle and the Fairytale 1 left the dock.

Now, alignment with the gate.

She rotated the stick and the ship gently danced on its axis.

Check no one is trying to do the same thing... ok.

Now, thrust forward but stay under the speed limit.

The engines of the Sidewinder buzzed to life and the ship moved towards the gate.

Stay on course... keep the rotation... check the green light... no one in the wrong direction...

"We are out!"

Nerys smiled, while the station slowly disappeared behind them.

"Three minutes until we are outside the mass-locking zone" Celeste said. "Jump course set".

"And here we are" Nerys nodded. "You can breathe now, Mr. Goodness!"

The Station Docks echo with the steady cacophony of rumbling, thunking & hissing of ships coming & going, rising & falling with the frequency but never ceasing.

A conversation could be overheard between a couple of people, if one happened to be close enough, & it goes something like this:

"Well! Hey, you wandering bit of old flotsam! What worthless debris did you bring in this time?"

"Ahh, you misbegotten barfly! Surprised you sobered up enough to make your shift!"

The two hugged briefly; in these parts, it was only too possible that 2 old friends might never see each other again...

The pilot, a bit withered beyond his years from too much time in zero-gee & unfiltered solar radiation in The Deep, replies,

"Nothing but the usual crap from scutter-runs, hauling rubber dog-shit, you know, & the cargo-bots are busy tending to that, but lookie what I found out there, floating about!"

He waves the other over to the cargo hatch & yanks the lock open, grunting a bit as it's been sticking awhile now, & the hatch falls aside with a dry gritty-sounding clang.

"Another useless damaged life pod for scrap? So what? You dragged me over to see that?" the jaded old docker exclaimed.

"Oh-Ho! Not damaged, & there's a body still inside! & look at that design! I've never seen one that old & still intact!"

The pride of finding some kind of prize entered his voice, but his face fell a bit after the docker responded,

"Bah! You idiot... you know what this means, don't you? If it was damaged, we could just scrap it & send anything inside direct to Reclamation... but No, now we gotta call Medical to take the body for identification & possible autopsy. Hell, there might even be next of kin & all the legal beagles wrangling over claims...Pffftt!"

His voice drifted off, visions of instant profits quickly fading from both their faces.

"Well, might as well get on with it," the docker sighed, & he slid his comm-pad out & thumbed the green button for Medical.

The pilot peered closely at the ancient life pod, as if he could decipher its story... any markings were nearly all burnt or scored away, & he could barely make out the faded name inscribed in ancient-styled script as the frost from its time in deep space quickly melted away: "La Belle Heaulmière"

He lifted his gaze to eye the 2 figures in the uniforms & insignia of Medical as they approached, wishing that he'd managed to 'somehow accidentally' damage that life pod, & shook his head ruefully.

He sighed & turned back to the routine of reviewing & comparing the manifest with the receipt... he wouldn't be surprised to find those damned bots were trying to cheat him again!

Nerys Nymei

"Three minutes until we are outside the mass-locking zone" Celeste said. "Jump course set".

"And here we are" Nerys nodded. "You can breathe now, Mr. Goodness!"

"Oh, I'm sorry, have we left the station?"

I smoothly rebuff softening my grip on the back of the pilot's seat.

"I don't know if I was simply captivated by you, or the take-off was so silky I didn't notice. After that display, I'd be more than happy to trust my life to your warm steady hand, rather than a cold clinical robot"

Enjoy watching Nerys' lagoon green eye for a moment as she absorbs the compliments. On realizing I'm prowling again, quickly change the subject.

"Ar now, three minutes you say? Well, I best get down to the webby-chair-thing I set up.

Address the COVAS as I duck out and go get seated for the first jump.

"I say Celeste, dose the Fairytale have internal comms? Be a bit off if I have to keep shouting through the hatch what? And if I may impose further, could you access my slate-play account and download the keyboard and guitar apps to your holo-display? I do like to play if the time is right"

Cain stepped out of his Diamondback Explorer, which has the Apollo Black paint job. Dark circles were formed under his brown eyes. His hair looked slightly disheveled. Over his flightsuit, he wore a renegade-style outfit. There were several patches adorning his jacket. He managed his way over to the communications terminal. "Ship name? Ugh. I'm terrible at these." Diamondback Explorer VA-88 flashed on the screen. The generic, pre-generated name given from the manufacturer.
18 Mar 2020, 8:01pm
He had read the articles of Thargoid incursions. He had received the new codex entries, strange alien sightings around the galaxy. His plans were to take the Diamondback Explorer and head to these sites. Supposedly parts from them could be harnessed to make decent equipment to face the Thargoids.

The ship needed a name related to this... “Blast it. Hmmm. Explorator?” He thought of old-Earth explorers he learned about growing up.  He thought of some of their first spacecrafts. Challenger, the unfortunate early generation spaceship that blew up in atmosphere. No, no. These were alien structures. Xeno.  Xenoprobe?  He typed in the name and submitted the request for the appropriate decals to be applied.

After a long "vacation" (exploration) at the behest of the Federal Navy, Cmdr. Teuf eased the FRC Hudson's Wisdom onto its pad. This Krait Phantom had only been in service for a few months as a reward for a mission off book for a Naval Admiral concerning the retrieval of his daughter from particularly nasty Delaine pilot. Teuf was informed it was a kidnapping but the truth of it was far more complex. The girl simply ran off with the direct opposite of her father. This wasn't the first "favor" Teuf had done for Adm Daggett... but on the completion of it, it would be his last. The ensuing conversation with command resulted in the "vacation". After powering down the plant and setting all systems to docked/standby, he check with the AI to request maintenance on the Phantom. Verity chimed in as Teuf turned to leave "Don't forget the reason you're here. Don't come back until you've at least been checked by the Medical Officer on this station." Teuf muttered under his breath," I'll turn you into a freaking toaster Verity." " 'Scuse me?" was her reply. "Nothing... Yes Mother." and he limped down the stairwell to the pad surface.

Surveying the scene, it was your typical busy station. Comings and goings and some of which where less than savory on the reasons why. He searched for the signs to get to the medical ward as his artificial ankle joint was acting up again after an SRV incident with a 4KM deep canyon.  "Exploration for the needs of the Federation" Teuf seethed. "More like get yourself lost in a hole because you don't suck up to a pretentious Admiral that can't keep his daughter in line." Either way Admiral Daggett did pay up with the ship, but he damned sure was going to make it difficult to enjoy the new vessel. Teuf continued on the main walkway headed to the Med Ward to get his ankle looked at. Wondering if anything was going to go right from here on out... "Who knows?"

After two uninteresting days of travel, the red and yellow Fairytale 3 docked at Inara Station.

Nerys had departed in a Sidewinder, now she returned in a DBX. She had departed as a total rookie, now she returned with much more experience.

But, most of all, she had departed in company. Now she returned alone.

"Celeste, lock the ship" she said, going down the access ramp.
"Aye, Commander".

For the umpteenth time, Nerys checked her tablet, but still no messages from Creamy.

I'll be quiet a few days she thought. But if I'll have no news soon, I'll return there.

But for the time being, she needed to equip the new ship: the Fairytale needed a new FSD drive, a new power plant, and lots of small adjustments to be transformed into a profitable exploration ship. And all these things required money.

Let's check the mission board.
