Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

She was trusting him with her ship, which he guessed was a big thing for her.

He went through his usual pre-flight routine, which was the same for any size ship.

Controls with free and full movement, instruments correctly calibrated, systems all operational and optimised.

He checked the nav panel and everything was in order.

"Ready for pad transfer" he reported.

He remembered the simulator and how easy he had found it, and it seemed a hundred years ago now.

He considered her comment about taking things slowly and it amused him a little, maybe for the wrong reasons.

Descartes sat back to enjoy the ride, tightening her harness.

The ship's computers wouldn't let Raglan do anything that might be dangerous or cause damage without getting confirmation or having manual override engaged.  With lots of distant clanging and banging, the ship rocked gently. The wall in front seemed to move closer then slid to one side. The ship was being moved to the landing/lift-off pad. Eventually the wall dropped away. The ship had been lifted into the vastness of the station. "You have the controls Raglan."

The comms opened with a beep.

Delacy DE-27  Cleared for take off and exit.

Raglan engaged the docking computer'

They lifted from the pad drifting towards the queue. Then they were out of the station. Raglan engaged the engines to clear the station ready for supercruise and the FSD jump.

Delacy DE-27  You have cleared the station exclusion zone. Enjoy your trip commander.

Continued Off station.

While waiting for the que to clear out I programmed in my waypoints and final destination. Its been a while since I was back in Nouvel and its about time I got back there.

As soon as I heard flight control state I was clear I shoved the power to her and set the jump, "oh how I love hearing that FSD countdown" and into the glories of hyper space.

Nor smiled as he eased Muninn onto the landing pad with a soft sigh rolling his shoulders in order to try to force them to relax. "I hate landing on stations odd I find planetfall so much easier." He grumbled softly to himself as he runs his hands over the various systems starting to switch them over to landing mode since most of the DB:Ex's system was not needed when docked. "Control I'm wanting to settle into the hanger." He said softly over the connection to the landing pad control, and shortly after that felt the pad start to lower as the pad moved him to the hanger bay. "Well, now I think a bit of rest first then maybe I'll go find a drink."

The Cuckoo corkscrewed through the slot as it entered the station, narrowly missing some absent-minded clown in a Python as the Keelback coasted in on the tail-end of a boost.

JB engaged his landing gear, dropped the throttle and tentatively guided his ship to his assigned landing pad, watching his speed drop from the high 200s to a more manageable 90.

With a gentle clunk, The Cuckoo landed.

"Ok," JB said to Panza, his android co-pilot, as he methodically powered down his ship, "Get those rat-bags out of the cabins before station security come looking for them."

"Yes, Boss," replied Panza as he unbuckled himself from his chair and detached himself from the ship's mainframe.

The robot stood up, clearing a good 6' 3", and was dressed in black to match his black paint. Panza took his beaten, brown leather gang jacket from the locker by his seat and put it on. He then removed a synthetic mask from the locker and pulled it over his android head, using the beard to pull it into place. Panza then put on a grey trucker's cap with the peak facing down and slipped on a pair of aviator shades to cover the green lights of his eyes. his disguise wasn't meant to be completely convincing, just good enough to not draw attention.

"I'm going to hang around here for a bit," JB started again. "Keep close to the ship though, I'm going to hit the bars later... see if I can drum up some business."

As JB walked trough yet another set of steel corridors, wondering what to do next, a familliar sound aired out of one of his pockets. Batu's communicator. His message blunt and to the point, just as the man was himself.

"Goods Delivered.

-B"

26 Nov 2020, 1:24pm
JB let out a sigh of relief as he read Batu's message on the Comms unit.

It had been an important mission but JB wasn't going to let Batu know that at the time... that would've compromised his bargaining position. There had been a few deals that had gone sideways lately and he needed a few of the big ones like this to land.

[Good work, brother,] typed JB one-handed as he held a bowl of pork noodles in the other,
[I look forward to us doing this again, mate.]

JB put the Comms unit away and pulled his chopsticks back out of his pocket. He started to eat the food as he turned back into the hanger where his ship was docked.

Gesturing to his copilot back aboard the ship, the unused SRV lift lowered so he could get back aboard The Cuckoo.

Effie turned the corner and strode into the Hanger area in her own inimitable way.

She was keen to know if her recently ordered flight deck control upgrades and interlinked heads up  visor unit had arrived safely from Rhea. As she approached the dock where the Big Generator was berthed, eager to speak to the grease monkeys to ensure all was on track with the refit, she was suddenly distracted by the smell of what could only be described as Chinese food!

“Noodles!?” She declared. “Yummy”.

She stopped dead as a vivid memory of the last meal she ate with her dear friend Miles Franklin (sadly MIA since the incident involving Effie, Felicia Winters and Miles along with far too much Champagne, at a truck stop in LHS 6309 back in 3304). Dear Miles. A tear rolled down her cheek.

“Pull yourself together girl!” she said to herself out loud.

“Chief!”

“Chief!! Have you finished those upgrades yet, I need to go kill someone!”

JB sat in his pilot's seat, boots up on the console, with his bowl of pork noodles in his lap as he tapped away at the illegally acquired Achilles programming machine he had hooked up to his Copilot Panza.

Although Panza was programmed to be a copilot, bodyguard, fighter pilot and assistant to JB... JB most wanted Panza as a companion, someone to keep him entertained on long journeys rather than having to rely on a human counterpart. That's why JB was always tinkering around with Panza's programming, to broaden his conversational capacity.

Just as JB was chopsticking a piece of pork into his mouth he saw an attractive, auburn haired woman walk past the doorway to his hanger and watched her as she stood still for a second.

JB paused, mouth open with the pork cube suspended in his gaping trap as he gave the woman's figure the once over. He broke his gaze momentarily as he felt the eyes of his robot copilot on him. Slowly, he looked over at Panza who was silently and blankly staring back at him.

"Wha'?" enquired JB as he popped the piece of pork in.  Panza didn't reply.

By the time JB looked back at the woman, she had gone.

“Well, Chief”, remarked Effie, as she came back down the ramp, “Everything seems to be working satisfactorily.”

She had just completed a shakedown run out around the local Star and back to the Station, to ensure the new controls and hud interface were up to snuff.

“Have I ever let you down Effie?”, he said with a grin.

“Not deliberately, no!” She replied playfully.

They both laughed. “Seriously though Chief, I need to head out, they probably have a line on my whereabouts by now, but before I take my leave, tell me, who’s the guy with the noodles and the goofy robot?”

“That’ll be JB. He manhandles an old bucket called the Cuckoo and I swear there isn’t a straight piece of plating left on that ship of his! He’s usually up to something best not mentioned, if you ask me, but seems like an OK guy when you get down to it. Why’d you ask?” said the Chief with a knowing frown that betrayed his feigned innocence. He knew exactly what she was up to!

“I could have sworn he had Chinese food earlier and wanted to know how he managed to locate noodles out here. Be a dear and see if you can find out where he’s headed next, I have a sense that our paths may be destined to cross one day, but I can’t hang around here right now and I dare not risk logging my flight plan either. You know how reach me, right!”

“”Sure” he said, is it that serious?

“What? The Chinese food, or my interest in JB” she couldn’t help letting out a little giggle

“Ha! No you loon, I mean is it really serious, this business of someone coming looking for you!”

“Nothing I haven’t handled before Chief, but remember, you ain’t seen me! Right!”, she tapped her nose as she quoted her favourite vintage comedy rerun”.

“Go on girl, get the hell out of Dodge and I’ll contact you via the usual.” he said.

“Good man Chief”, you’re a rock!

“Well you know I’d have done anything for Miles and I swore to him that I’d look out for you, not that you need me to do that, you’re a tough old bird, ain't no mistake!”

“Just be sure to let that JB fellow know I’ll be seeing him!” She winked.

Effie faked a punch to her dear friend’s round belly, leant into him and kissed his cheek. “Fry me a Kipper, “I’ll be back in time for Breakfast!” She said, as she slapped her thigh, turned and ran back up the ramp.

The Chief stood and watched, as the girl he’d known since she was sixteen, dusted off the deck and headed for the mail slot doing a spiral as she hit the boost.

“See you Effie” he said to himself.

JB took a cold beer from the fridge in his cabin and walked back into the cockpit of The Cuckoo. He slumped into his chair and looked through the giant windows onto the concourse in front of him.

JB had sent Panza to talk to the Deck Chief. He'd seen the attractive woman talking to the Chief and wanted to see if he would divulge any info about her to a robot that he might not tell a human.

JB watched as the tall android chatted to the Deck Chief, they seemed to be getting along.

As JB took a swig of the cold beer he looked over as Panza turned to face him. Panza then raised one hand in the circular "OK" gesture. JB swiped his hand to try and signal to the robot to "be cool".

Panza then lifted his other hand and, with his index finger extended, started repeatedly inserting it into the "OK" gesture.

"Oh, for fuck's sake," groaned JB as he dropped his head into his hands, "I've got to stop him hanging around with those shits back home."

Effie slipped into the Docking bay and straight up the Big Generator’s boarding gantry, not even stopping to talk to the Chief. He noticed her turn and wave though as the door slid shut.

“Prep for launch Kate”, she said into the intercom as she removed her coat and boots. Slipping into her flight suit, she leant down to stroke Cheska. “Who’s my best girl”.

She made her way to to the flight deck as the engines could be heard coming to life. Kate hit the thrusters the moment her friend’s backside hit the chair. And less than 15 seconds later they had cleared the slot.
12 Dec 2020, 9:47am
“Annnnnd, we’re back!” Said Kate.

It had only been a short run under the radar.

Hey babe!” Effie called to Kate as she turned to walk in the opposite direction as they both left the Cygnus X-1’s birth, “See if you can locate a trader with a bottle of The Macallan, for the Chief, he’s earned himself a little treat! Oh and DON’T FORGET THE CHICKEN NOODLES!” She yelled.

Kate laughed and waved in acknowledgment as she boarded the transit shuttle.

Effie felt strangely nervous as she thought about what was on her mind. Threepwood! She mulled, I wonder if he’s related to the Rhea Threepwoods, that Mom and Dad had dealings with years ago and who we once vacationed with during Summer Break? She frowned as she imagined the enormity of such a colossal and highly unlikely coincidence. He’s just a Pirate!

A man with red hair and a beard to match in a wrinkled gabardine suit made his way through the docking bay and towards his ship which was currently being left alone on a small landing pad towards the rear of the docking bay. Cyberbird was an Imperial Courier, that had been fitted for speed and maneuverability as well as maximised jump distance.

He punched in the code for the ship and made his way up the boarding ramp, closing it after him, he made his way to to his quarters at the rear of the ship, taking off his suit jacket and hanging his holster across the back of the chair beside his cot. He would have preferred a chieftain but the higher ups wanted him to present a certain image when on "Company Business."

Just as Robert had changed into his sleepwear and was about to lay his head down for the night, he received a call, Robert looked down and saw that it was from an unrecognised number, he scowled and answered, holding it up to his ear, "Who is this and where did you get this number?"

The woman on the other end of the call wavered and hesitated, "I'm sorry, i-is this Commander McLaughlin? You asked me to call you back about my... my son Teddy and how he..." the woman's voice trailed off. McLaughlin mouthed "Fuck!" silently to himself and cringed, feeling overwhelming shame at having snapped at her.

"That's right Mrs Cruz, this is Commander McLaughlin, although you can call me Gerry if that would make you feel more comfortable. I'm terribly sorry, I didn't recognise your number and..." Gerry paused, rubbing his temples, "It's totally alright Gerry, I understand you must be very busy with the war and all." The woman paused seemingly at a loss as to how to proceed, "I was just hoping you would be able to shed some light on how Teddy died."

Gerry inhaled through his teeth, "I'm afraid that I cannot share the exact details of Teddy's death for the sake of classified information but what I can tell you is that he died quickly and painlessly." The woman on the other end of the call was silent for a moment before saying, "I understand, you just make sure... make sure you kill them all, until they're all dead or they never hurt anyone again."

Gerry had a cold look in his eyes as he responded, "Yes Ma'am." Mrs Cruz ended the call.

"Quickly and painlessly." Gerry thought to himself. "Classified information."

Lies.

Gerry opened his datapad and had a look at the after action reports he had been reading earlier.  He simply hadn't wanted to tell her how Teddy had died screaming in agony as Thargoid acid had melted through his flesh and bones before finally burning through his vital organs and killing him.

Gerry put the pad down and laid on the bed, holding up his dog tags to inspect them, the Elite insignia and the golden decals of a triple elite glinting in the light. "I don't feel like a Triple Elite right now." Gerry closed his eyes and tried to think back on happier, more peaceful times.
