Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Ao nodded;
"Sounds good, our next order of business should be to locate the others, we can't leave them here, not in the middle of all this...and that won't be easy with only Amata able to move about freely to the best of our knowledge"
26 Jun 2020, 4:47pm
Amata nods as well. "Indeed. Does one of you know anything about them? It could help us narrowing down where they went into hiding."
26 Jun 2020, 4:59pm
Jason checks his hand terminal, scrolling back through old messages. Then, he smiles, glancing up.

"I think I have a way to find them."

He tapped one of the messages in his inbox, starting a reply to Creamy, and setting its priority to 'High'.

"We need to locate you. We have a way off of the station but time is short."
26 Jun 2020, 5:02pm
Amata raises an eyebrow in confusion. "Oookaaaaay... so you know one of them? Care to fill me in while we wait for a response?"
30 Jun 2020, 4:59pm
Jason shrugged. "Something of a chance encounter. Creamy overheard me talking to some piratical persons and asked me to take a message to an Imperial I might run into."
30 Jun 2020, 5:13pm
Amata crosses her arms and tilts her head to the side. "Why do I get the feeling that there's more to this story?" She then sighs. "Either way, what do you know about him? Maybe it could help us figure out where he might have gone into hiding in case he doesn't respond to your message."

Nerys was perfectly aware of the type of hotel she was currently in, but even if she wasn't a veterinarian, she knew a thing or two about horse mouths and related gifts, so she didn't complain at all. It was infinitely better than being shot or kidnapped.

"Let me check that knee" she said, sitting on the bed with a sigh of relief. "Probably it's nothing major, but..."

Beep!

The wrist scanner, that was linked to Nerys' datapad, vibrated and another holographic window appeared above the one currently monitoring Creamy's status.

Incoming holo-message

"Who can be?" Nerys was surprised. With Celeste still offline, her ship access to the station network was disabled, and no one on Citi Gateway knew her personal ID... except the personnel of the Medical Ward.

"Doctor Nymei?" A little face appeared over Nerys' wrist. It was a man around 40yo, with olive skin and Indian features. Nerys recognized him immediately. "Vikram Rajagopal speaking. Sorry to leave you only a message, but I tried to call you through the station network without success. We heard there has been a... turmoil some minutes ago in the docks, and that your ship has been involved. I hope you are well, we in the hospital are very worried for you, please call us as soon as possible. I also have a message from Janosh Prewalski... the worker on whom you performed the arm replantation last week. He says that your ship has been declared Sacred Vessel by the Guild of Dock Workers. From what I understand, basically it's a play on words, meaning that now it is under their custody. They'll keep it safe and perform the repairs for free. Please, get in touch soon!"

The message ended.

"This... is... " she smiled, dazed. "Did you hear, Creamy? No, silly me, obviously no."

She moved in front of Creamy, to allow him to see clearly her lips. "Good news!" she started... and then her wrist scanner vibrated again.

"Commander?" said a familiar voice with a French accent. "My internal clock says I have been offline for forty-seven minutes. My sensors show signs of internal damage and gun fire. Are you ok?"

"Celeste! I am so glad to hear you!"

The COVAS was working again... and that meant that Nerys was again reachable on the station network.

Nerys Nymei

The message ended.

"This... is... " she smiled, dazed. "Did you hear, Creamy? No, silly me, obviously no."

She moved in front of Creamy, to allow him to see clearly her lips. "Good news!" she started... and then her wrist scanner vibrated again.

Was she going to kiss him? Creamy pushed himself deeper into the noisy easy-clean pillows to keep some distance from Nerys’ gunman-summoning lips. He glanced at the door and the one-way window looking out to the concourse beyond. They were on the second floor, but Creamy wasn’t taking any chances.

The Doctors' wrist computer chimed again. “Saved by the bell” Creamy thought to himself; no one with a gun had been ready to burst into the room thankfully. He would do his best and that would, naturally, be spectacular; but Creamy knew he was not in fighting form. A shower and a few hours rest under the good doctors care, and Creamy would be himself once again.. he hoped.

Piecing together what he could hear and Nerys’ general change in attitude, Creamy worked out her ship and it’s rather motherly COVAS were safe and on the way to being operational thanks to the people Nerys had helped at the hospital.

“Oh that is good news Doctor. You are innocent of any wrongdoing and jolly well should be free to leave if you so choose. It really does lighten ones' heart to see a good deed being appreciated”

Creamy rested a hand on Nerys’ thigh.

“I had been without a ship for a long while as you know, and that feeling of weighted shackles binding you to one place is not for a free spirit such as yourself. I’m very glad you and .. . Celeste was it? .. are back in touch”

Creamy paused politely for a moment before changing the subject. The dried blood on his back was itching and he desperately wanted to shower. It then occurred to Creamy that he was laying on a bed, wearing only his briefs, and he hadn’t even tried to encourage Nerys to join him! That strike to the head must have done more damage than Creamy realised, and if he didn’t stop enjoying the feel of Nerys’ thigh his own loins would soon advise what he was thinking. Creamy clasped his hands together and imagined standing under a cold shower.

“I say doctor, would I be permitted to sho…” another thought struck him.

Creamy’s mind usually bounced around like a power ball in a small room, especially when he was forcing himself to behave.

“Oh yes, that chap! Ar now, with Celie up and running, she could connect with my slate that I left in your med-bay yes? Would you mind asking her to do so please doctor?”

Creamy levered himself off the bed and turned his back to Nerys deliberately. He risked opening some draws looking for clean towels while he reviled to Nerys his user name and password so her COVAS could complete the connection.

“You know the fellow? Brown hair, good Roman nose. Looks like he’s wearing eyeliner” said Creamy voicing his chain of thoughts rather than making sense.

Creamy quickly closed a second draw. The contents of that really didn’t help keep his mind of Nerys and the bed.

“A solid chap I think. We met him when you agreed to take me to Robigo, and he was at the ramp when I was knocked for six”

Creamy desperately tried to remember his name and hoped Nerys would know who he was on about.

“It would be bad form not to thank him.. . and his priest friend come to think of it. The chap is in my contacts list somewhere, you’ll find him if you don’t mind”

Draw number four was almost full of soft clean towels. Creamy took a large one and wrapped it around his waist. He went to ask Nerys for the use of her wrist computer but thought better of it. Lots of complicated looking things were going on in its display.

“If you wouldn’t mind typing the chap a message please Nerys?” Creamy still couldn’t remember his name.

What ho chap.

Thank you very much for your kind assistance at the dry dock. One for the books what? If you and your friend hadn’t have been on hand, I dread to think what may have become of us. We look forward to showing you proper gratitude in the near future.

I find myself once more in need of your indulgence. The good Doctor and I could do with some supplies, but I understand my treatment requires us to stay in very close proximity making, coupled with my injuries,  a simple shopping trip most difficult. Could you please find yourself disposed to come to our aid once more by delivering a few medical supplies, and a little nourishment?

I do hope I have not stepped over a line by asking you to run an errand on our behalf. I will gladly reimburse you once I am reunited with my property.

Attached is a list of our needs including some clean clothes. The incident has left both of us in need of fresh garments.

You can find us at the Highlights Motel. I’ll inform the front desk you may be calling.
Yours hopefully in gratitude

PS
Please ask Mrs Fillworth to make one extra sweet flask of tea.

Jason feels his hand terminal vibrate slightly before the device emits an audible ping indicating the receipt of a message. He looks it over and smiles.

"Well, ask and ye shall receive. We're heading to Highlights Motel. We'll make a stop on the way for some supplies, and then get the hell off the station. I think there's a couple of ways to head through low-traffic areas to get there."
03 Jul 2020, 7:48am
Amata ponders for a second. "Not sure if buying those supplies on this station is a good idea. It could give away where on the station we are and lead those guys hunting those two right to us. If possible we should delay that until we reached Burojinura."
03 Jul 2020, 10:10am
"I agree with Amata, we need to get off the station as quickly as possible, delaying for any supplies we do not desperately need puts us at unnecessary risk"

Ao withdrew a polished pipe from one of his pockets, and an old style brass flip lighter from the other with a small tin of tobacco
The contents of the tin were...pitiful...a few flakes of tobacco dust and little more, just enough for a few pipes worth...

"Then again..." he mumbled to himself running his fingers around the sides of the tin to gather up all the scraps he could before filling his pipe, and with the practised flick wrist flick of the habitual smoker opened the lighter and struck the wheel lighting the pipe...

Ao took a deep draw and exhaled with a sigh...

Alex scowled at Ao but said nothing, she like her sister, detested the habit...
"Lead the way Jason" he said...his voice thick, speaking through the smoke...

Creamy regarded Nerys casually but with concern on his mind. She had transitioned through a lot of hard emotions in the last hour, and now she seemed alright. Creamy worried Nerys was focusing on the good news to take her mind off all the nastiness that could still be clawing at a veneer of false calm. He himself was mentally exhausted and a little on edge, but he had learned not to underestimate Nerys’ fortitude. More than once she had surprised him with her ability to deal with unreasonable events.

The brownish-red patch of blood on Nerys’ light blouse and the dried smears and splashes on her wrists bothered him deeply. Creamy was well aware it was his blood staining the doctor. Although she seemed to be alright at the moment, Creamy did want Nerys to think he wasn’t concerned for her wellbeing.

“Thank you for muddling out that chap I was thinking of, and typing out a message doctor”

Creamy gripped the towel at his waist and sucked his stomach in a little. He was still a fine figure to behold, but it had been a number of months since he had access to Zero-G gym equipment, and he’d been slacking on his daily exercise. Being from a planet with higher gravity and atmospheric pressure, Creamy had to work hard to maintain his physique in the low gravity of space stations.

“You really are an impressive young lady, but would not you like to take a moment for yourself before we have company?”

Creamy pointed at Nerys’ hands to drawer attention to the blood on her palm.

“I’ll be alright if I pull that chair to the bathroom door and sit outside while you freshen up. I admit I am desperate to get in the shower myself”

He tentatively rested his free hand on the gash in the back of his head given to him by Yaz’s dusters.

“If you think it’s alright for me to get this wound wet of course”
07 Jul 2020, 9:45pm
Nerys nodded. She was tired. Really tired. Presently she was still running on emergency batteries, but soon the fatigue would present the bill.

"Let me check your situation" she said, taking a look at her wrist scanner. The emergency procedure was almost complete and some nano-machines were already starting to disassemble the others, transforming them into harmless salt molecules.

"Less than thirty minutes and you'll be free from this invisible chain" Nerys smiled. "And about that cut... let me see... yes, it's quite minor, no problem in washing it."

Then she checked the bathroom door. The shower was very inviting.

There are clothes in the drawers the girl... Christy? Kirsty? had told them while leaving the room. Nerys checked them, not entirely convinced, but managed to find a white t-shirt and a couple of shorts. Not quite her style, but they were clean and of her size.

"I'll be very fast" she smiled, taking the clothes and closing the bathroom door behind her. Wearing only the wrist scanner, she finally allowed the shower to wash away her anxiety.

Jason nodded to those near him, and started to make his way first through the crowd, then from one low-traffic corridor to another. Both passers-by and video surveillance were minimal. About ten minutes in, they passed a dormitory area for station maintenance staff. Jason ducked into the area, emerging a minute later with an armful of nondescript clothes and a sheepish expression.

"Desperate times, so on and so forth." He smiled. "It's not the worst thing I've ever done, not by a parsec. Let's keep moving."

It took a very tense, very careful additional fifteen minutes for them to arrive at the motel. Walking in, he gave the staff member at the reception desk is best smile.

"Hello there! I'm looking for my friend who goes by 'Creamy'. I believe he told you he was expecting friends."
08 Jul 2020, 6:24pm
Amata looks around the "motel's" lobby and sighs. "These guys must be really desperate if they decided to hide in here."
