Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Through the swirls of a soon-to-be-forgotten nightmare, Effie's face came into view like the sun breaking through the clouds of dying storm.

Maybe that was a bit too poetic for JB at that time in the morning...

...JB woke up to find himself in bed with Effie. "Boobies" he thought because, you know, boobies.

"Hello, trouble," JB managed as he had a small stretch. There was the small pang of a hangover but only enough to point out that he'd been at the moonshine.

"Sleep OK?"

An Anaconda emerges out of supercruise, roughly shaking its lone occupant and cargo.

Anders gave a sigh of relief, knowing that he is in safe space yet again. "Made it. That trip was a hell of a lot faster than I thought it would be. This Anaconda really is a wise investment." he thought to himself before throttling up towards the station.

This specific Anaconda had a grey coat of paint all over it, making it look like something fresh out of the factory. Nothing special, externally speaking.

A deep voice booms out over Anders' headset, muttering the usual greeting and reminder to file a docking request. By habit, he went over his navigation console and promptly filed his docking request.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Moments later, he now finds himself sliding through the mailslot and into the assigned landing pad. The ship landed quite smoothly, a textbook landing to some pilots.

Anders went down from the Anaconda, where he is greeted by the hangar crew chief.

"Ah, pilot. Anything ya' need?" the chief asks with a rather enthusiastic look.

"Just a refuel and an integrity check will do, chief." Anders answers. The chief nods and got his crew to work. As Anders walked away from the hangar and into the nearest bar he could find, he whispered to himself, "Probably a new guy..."

"Hello, trouble,"

"Sleep OK?"

“A little” she replied. “You were having a nightmare”

She had held him close through the night, wondering what kind of horrors were resonating in his subconscious mind as he slept non too peacefully.

“Does Panza do Coffee?” She asked as she sat on the edge of the bed. She noticed his eyes were fixed on the girls. She smiled and threw his T-Shirt at his face. “Animal” she laughed.

“Get up, there’s a Peacock of a Fed Admiral in town with an entire Fleet anchored outside and although I don’t think he’s on Felicia’s friends list, I can’t be certain he won’t report my presence to her if his Staffers just happen to log the ships in the bays”

Effie stood and managed a totally subtle full circle twirl on front of him as she gathered her underwear and headed into the bathroom. A moment later she was underwater with her eyes closed...

As Sprockett makes his way hurriedly from the Galactic Bar, putting as much distance between him and the Admiral and his goons, he strides purposefully towards his ship "All Right Guv?"

He hears across the station radio of the destruction by Pirates of the Type 10 Defender "Mrs Malaprop" and a warning to all pilots to watch out for wreckage upon station approach.

On hearing this awful news Sir Sprockett's indigestion gets worse.

"shizzle" - he thinks to himself, as checking the insurance details of "Mrs Malaprop" - the agencies latest purchase and sees the insurance rebuy cost of 10 mill credits plus the 5 mill of cargo. This ship, even with a 30% purchase discount price, is starting to feel like a bad purchase.

Sprockett, head down deep in thought, hurriedly goes to his ship, all matt black , sleek and threatening.

As Sir Sprockett settles himself into the ship, going through pre-flight checks - his Comms buzz and as he looks, he sees his accountant is calling

"how bad is today going to get?" he muses as he answers the call...

JB pressed the Intercom button and told Panza to put the coffee on.

He sat up on the edge of the bed and started to get dressed. His main hipflask fell to the floor, he picked it up and gave it a rattle. Empty. He carefully topped it up with a dark rum and slipped it into his jacket's inside pocket.

JB checked his Comms unit. No messages from Spud saying he'd ran into trouble so, hopefully, it was all keeping calm with The Feds in the bar.

JB had enough problems with politics within his own backyard without getting into the whole Fed/Imp stuff. His home was right on the edge of the bubble, outside of superpower interests, so it never really affected him.

Obviously it was a problem for Effie though.

JB took one final mouthful of last night's noodles that had been dumped by the bed after what had been a brief, midnight pit stop.

JB put the carton back down, Panza could clean it up later. He walked through to the small shower room in his own cabin to clean himself up.

“Ef? Are you in there?”

Kate was standing on the deck in front of a rather insistent robot who refused to disturb his Boss.

“EFFIE!” She sighed frustratedly.

“Look Pal”, I’m sure your Boss would let me in if you actually asked him!” She rolled her eyes.

“Effie, if you don’t let me in right now, I swear I’m gonna shoot this frackin robot!”

As she said this, the huge mechanical man thing straightened to attention and his hand moved to rest on the grip of his sidearm.

“Stand down buddy!” she said, I’m only joking!

Kate was about to give up and return to the X-1, when her friend’s voice entered her earpiece...
20 Dec 2020, 9:22am
“Sorry Kate, I was in the shower!” Kate said as she sat on the bed, all air dried and feeling, well, quite bloody happy with herself, although she had expected not to have finished her shower alone, but by the sound of her friends voice, the day has already begun and Effie was late!

“Are you outside the Cuckoo?” The asked. Hold on a minute..

She got up and headed up the corridor to the owner’s cabin door and pressed the intercom. “JB honey, I hope everything’s OK. Listen, Kates outside and says she needs to speak to us? Would you mind asking Panza to let her in?” It’s about time you two met anyway” she added.
20 Dec 2020, 11:53am
JB was just pulling some fresh clothes on as the message came through.

[Don't be rude, Panza, let our guest in. Show the ladies through to Cabin 2 and bring the coffee through]

...JB messaged then, after a brief thought,...

[And keep your trap shut. We still need to discuss some of the things the lads taught you]

After a quick glug of mouthwash, JB walked out of his cabin to meet the Effie and Kate.
20 Dec 2020, 12:29pm
The robot stepped to the side and gestured toward the Cuckoo’s access ramp.

“Well thank you very much”, said Kate

The robot proceeded to follow her up the ramp.

She saw her friend seated in the cabin next to her new beau. ‘Frak me!’ she thought, genuinely shocked and more than a little impressed by the guy’s appearance.

Effie introduced the them both and Kate sat down across the small table from the other two.

“Tell me” she said, looking directly at JB. “When I asked your robot why he wouldn’t let me in, he made this very odd gesture with his hands, poking his right hand index finger into the ‘OK’ sign that he was making with his left hand?!” She frowned and smiled simultaneously. “What was that all about?” She asked turning to Effie, she winked.
20 Dec 2020, 1:15pm
JB gave a stern look at Panza.

"It's just his sign language meaning I have company inside," JB lied, although he knew it wouldn't fool anyone. "I might need to get the soldering iron on him, work out some of those kinks."

Panza cocked his head to one side briefly.

"Nice to have you aboard," JB said, turning his attention back to Kate. "I've heard good things about you."

"Nice to have you aboard,"

"I've heard good things about you."

"likewise, JB. Effie hasn't shut up about you and your darn noodles for almost a month out in the black!" She gave her friend a little wink and continued, "She's a good old bird, but life hasn't been too kind to her recently, I hope you were a Gentleman, JB!" She sipped her coffee and said, "I wouldn't want to have to reprimand you, but I wouldn't hesitate for a moment"

She smiled at him, thinking, 'reprimand him! The chance would be a fine thing!'

"Anyway you two, I wanted to check that Effie was OK considering the arrival of that peacock and his Fleet"

Turning to Effie she asked, "How much have you told Sir Lancelot here? Is he up to speed?"
20 Dec 2020, 2:33pm
Kate Earnshaw "How much have you told Sir Lancelot here? Is he up to speed?"

"Not much to be honest, just that I'm kind of being looked for and I'm sure from my actions in the Bar last night, that he easily spotted that I'm not at ease when Navy types of any sort, especially Federal ones and men in suspect suits walk into a room!"

She looked at JB, "I don't want to place you, or your friends in any danger. Kate and I can be on our way if you'd feel safer, but I was sort of hoping that our paths may cross once in a while, it's been fun" she said and placed a hand on his knee. "Also, if your compatriots would be OK with a visitor every now and then, it would be kind of nice to have somewhere we could go to hang out in peace and quiet every now and then, free from all this Political BS and hide and seek stuff I keep getting embroiled in!"

She looked at Kate with a 'are you alright with this' look on her face and Kate nodded in return.

"Do you Jamaica Inn boys have a hangout, or do you nomad it about like galaxy like Kate and I?"
20 Dec 2020, 4:18pm
"Don't worry about putting us in danger, we get in enough trouble that we wouldn't notice."

JB took a sip of his coffee. He refrained from making it Irish, not everybody was down with a high-proof breakfast.

"I'll send you a map of Jamaica Inn's systems and stations incase you find yourselves needing to go to ground. We're outside of the political bubble... there's a few Fed factions out there but we buy most of our guns from their stations so they pretty much just leave us to our own devices."

"If you've gotta go you've gotta go... but I like the idea of our paths crossing... it would be a shame if last night was a one off."

From seeing Kate and Effie together, and hearing about Effie's upbringing, JB was under no illusion that he was just a "bit of rough". He did hope he'd done enough to entice her into slumming it again soon though.

"So what plans do you girls have then?"

"So what plans do you girls have then?"

"Dinner tonight?" Said Effie. She was quietly delighted that JB had signalled his hopes that last night would not be their only night together.

"Kate and I need to do some shopping this afternoon though, I'm sick of seeing her in nothing but Combat Pants, but you're welcome to tag along, otherwise we can hook up later, say around eight?"

She paused, "Oh, you mean plans, like an actual plan?"

She laughed. "Same old same old, look up a job or two on the boards, see where life takes us, but if you're going to point the way to the Jamaica Inn, we ought to ensure that the next job takes us in right general direction I guess!"

She leant into JB sitting next to her and whispered, "you wouldn't mind if Kate joined us for Dinner tonight would you?"
20 Dec 2020, 6:45pm
"Shopping?" Thought JB. He couldn't picture himself in some sort of montage scene, laughing arm-in-arm as they tried on hats... or whatever people did when they went shopping together. Or as one of those guys sat with the bags whilst the missus spends an hour in the changing rooms.

Then again, "Dinner" filled him with just as much dread... Did she mean in a restaurant?... Elbows off the table and don't use your knife like a fork?... Was he going to have to order a meal that comes on a plate instead of a wrapper. He wasn't sure if he'd ever eaten a starter in his life.

Effie Trinket
She leant into JB sitting next to her and whispered, "you wouldn't mind if Kate joined us for Dinner tonight would you?"

"Of course, no problem," he replied with a smile. "If you two want to hit the shops first then Panza and I can go kick around in The Warrens... see if there's any business to find down there... maybe see if there's any word on the Fed presence."
