Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

The cart containing Jason started with a woosh, and the next one appeared in front of the maintenance panel.

Nerys did not suffer of claustrophobia, but the idea of being closed in a wheeled coffin was less than appealing, even if for just three minutes. On the other hand, the idea of being shot and kidnapped by unknown assailants... not even knowing why... was definitely worse. So she crawled inside the cart.

Behind them, a loud bang rocked the jammed door, and a red, heated dot appeared in the center of the metal plate.

"Go go go!" Nerys said, closing the cart door from inside. The onboard computer acknowledged the lock, and the cart departed like a small rocket. The third one immediately took its place, waiting for Amata.
19 Aug 2020, 1:39pm
Amata sighs. "So much for me going second... now I know what they mean when talking about 'the best laid plans'." She crawled into her cart, closed the door and tried her best to brace herself for the following acceleration.
19 Aug 2020, 5:53pm
Jason ground his teeth as the acceleration pressed him in the small space of the cart. It wasn't necessarily made for conveying people. Thankfully, the cart slid to a stop gently enough that he was not squashed thanks to Newtonian physics.

The cart popped open and Jason rolled out into a crouch. He had his pistol out and down, finger along the trigger guard, looking around the room. He waited there, patient and alert, for the other carts to arrive.
19 Aug 2020, 9:29pm
The second cart arrived, immediately followed by the third one. The rails ended in a square room, full of mechanical arms and shelves. A couple of robot "spiders" with glass eyes checked the carts, lingering from the ceiling, but finding no barcodes to scan and no boxes to unload decided that they were empty, and ignored them.

"Cargo storage area #25" Nerys read over the small maintenance door. "We should be exactly between the medium landing pad and the small one... the question is whether there is a welcoming committee waiting for us beyond this door... this last code should unlock it, but it's probably best if we take a careful look outside before opening it wide..."

19 Aug 2020, 11:20pm
Due to the rather wild ride that subjected her to several high g-force turns Amata needed a few moments to gather herself after she stumbled out of her cart. "I hope we never have to do this again. That was highly unpleasant." She turns towards Nerys. "I secured the hangar with a personal code before I left to meet up with you. Can you check if it has been overwritten or hacked? That should give us at least a hint if someone might be waiting on the other side of the door."

Ao and August lunged down the stairs of the cutter, blades drawn, glinting in the glare of the docklights...
One of the white clad figures turned to face them in surprise;
First August soared above him, taking advantage of the low gravity and his momentum to propel himself through the air, as August passed over the soldier, with two blurs of a sword strike, cut the latches holding the armoured chest plate in place and it clattered to the floor.
Confused and stunned the soldier looked down in time to see a bluish blade, humming as it cut through the Air pass through him width ways.
Blood filled the man's helmet as he choked and collapsed with a high pitched scream...

Maintaining their momentum, the two brothers pressed the attack pushing towards a large pile of supply crates at the edge of the docking pan that were currently being unloaded, each containing a vast array of weapons and ammunition, including the specific weapon they wanted.

August reached them first, shoulder barging the unarmoured deckhand like a freight train into the pile that collapsed on top of him.
Ao reached the crates second, throwing himself forward as August ducked behind them to avoid the gunfire now directed at them...

As Ao passed over the top August's hand reached out from the cover of the boxes and Ao clasped it, feeling himself being dragged down to safety...

"Are they here?" he asked panting

August kicked over a large crate, nearly three meters long and it's contents rolled out...
"August you said guns, not fucking cannons!" hissed Ao looking at the massive weapons, about the size of a man, the weapons had a grip with a trigger similar to a flight stick about a forearms length of the way up their main body, and another just beyond it with no trigger.
The first third or so of the weapon seemed to be nothing more than a rectangular box, protruding from the top was a magazine with so sides, more like a clip, inside were four large rounds of a calibre Ao couldn't event begin to guess at, big seemed to be an understatement however.

August however ignored him and motioned for Ao to pick up one of the two weapons as he plugged a cable into the side of the weapon, and then plugged the other end into a port on his trigger arm's armour.
"You'll need to plug in to aim, the gun transmits targeting data straight to your hud"
"One problem August, this armour isn't designed with that feature, it's a prototype" sighed Ao

"You have a jack don't you?! Then Jack In!"
Ao realising this did so, plugging the cable into the socket in his neck.
Once more a shooting pain like ice water filling his skull erupted in his mind...then...nothing happened
"Ok now what?"

"Try closing your right eye"
Ao did so...as his centre of vision changed two rotating circles appeared, one remained fixed with his vision, the other moved with the barrel of the weapon, when the two overlapped they turned green

Ao gave August the thumbs up, and the two put their plan into action, looking almost directly above them, they could see pad 25 and the tens of armoured figures stood there waiting...

"Ao are you sure about this plan?..." Asked August, who had made it very clear to Ao that he thought their next move was nothing short of insanity

Ao looked August in the eye;
"No time for caution...little brother"

Ao led the way, the massive weapon causing him to stumble slightly, Ao lurched out from the cover and jumped, firing the suit's manoeuvring thrusters, the ground fell away and seemed to move at an increasing rate the higher he climbed, now having enough momentum that he would freefall straight through the station's rotational axis, he saw the visor on August's hemlock suit under his jacket and armour snap shut, and he too leapt and fired his thrusters slowly catching up to Ao.
Holding position like skidiver's in freefall, the two had to manoeuvre sharply to avoid and incoming passenger liner, the gawping faces of crew and passengers alike visible in the bluga's windows as they tore past...then, they hit the sweet spot...
The point directly at the centre of the station's rotation, where gravity was at an absolute zero, like a pair of synchronised swimmers the pair rolled forward into what was almost a sitting position, took aim, and taking great care to account for the station's rotation with the weapon's targeting system doing most of the work...and fired...

The recoil from the first shot almost threw Ao completely off course, if it hand't been for his armours thruster's being their best to keep him stable as he fired, he would have been spinning out of control...but even with the thursters, each shot killed off alot of momentum, and the thruster's on the back of the armour were beginning to get uncomfortably hot keeping him moving....

The sound of the weapon firing was like a cannon blast, followed by the solid clunk of the casing being ejected and the bolt slamming home on the next round.

BOOM, Slam
BOOM, Slam
BOOM,Slam
BOOM...

One after the other the brothers emptied their magazines, and tossing away the now empty guns watched as the explosive tipped tracers seemed to curve with the station's rotation, each found their target, detonating in a small cloud as the rounds slammed into the guards, or deckplates next to them guarding the entrance to pad 25 turning the figure, and those around them, into a fine pink mist.

The pair fired their thrusters once more, drawing their blades as the soared, coming closer and closer to the ground now, they had lost far more momentum with each shot then planned...

Ao watched expecting to see August splatter like a bug on a widscreen against a group of 6 silos, giving a sigh of relief as August rolled hard to the right 90 degrees and passed between them, continuing the roll as he exited the far side.
Ao banked down lower to come along side, once again in freefall...
The two rolled forwards again, and fired their thrusters once more, now breaking as hard they could, the clothes over Ao and August's armour was smouldering from the heat, and the two brother's beginning to feel a burning sensation inside their armour.

They came in low and fast, still making their breaking burn as the tore through the area between dock 25 and the large pad, boots kicking up sparks as they gouged up the deckplates....

One armoured figure collapsed, his throat opened from jaw to jaw, a crimson spray erupting against the door to the maintenance and cargo passage with each beat of his dying heart.
The one behind him just crumpled to the floor...his head missing...

Shouts of panic and confusion rang out as the guards raised their weapons to face the blue and white attackers, shrouded in smoke and steam....

Side by side, Ao and August prepared to charge their foe, knowing that it would only be moments before the doctor and her companions emerged from the doorway...

Amata Lirein"I secured the hangar with a personal code before I left to meet up with you. Can you check if it has been overwritten or hacked? That should give us at least a hint if someone might be waiting on the other side of the door."

Nerys swallowed. She had only received a bunch of codes on her tablet, it wasn't that she had suddenly become an expert hacker. Furthermore, the codes were specific for the maintenance system, not for the access to the docks. But she didn't want Amata to think she was a blunderer, so she checked the online map with meticulous attention... until outside the hell broke loose and screams of pain and panic could be clearly heard beyond the maintenance door.

"Ehm" Nerys said, blushing. "I think I can safely say that there is someone out there".
20 Aug 2020, 12:57pm
"We need to know what's going on out there." Amata ponders for a few seconds, then grabs Nerys' tablet and enters something before handing it back. "Here, try this code. It should give you access to the Astarte's camera drones. Whoever is out there is most likely too distracted to notice them getting deployed, and even if they do we might get enough footage to determine what's going on before they get shot down. Either way, it should make planning our next step easier."

Jason took a position right next to the door, opposite the unlocking mechanism. He watched Nerys and Amata, and kept an ear near the door. Bulkheads tended to be thick in order to protect from possible decompression or other damage, but you never knew what you might pick up if you concentrated. His revolver felt a bit heavy in his hands. He didn't look forward to shooting his way to the Astarte, but if that's what he needed to do, so be it. Especially if he was protecting Amata.

Twenty minutes was the time Creamy estimated he could have the landing gears detached from the ship. He was detained at a tourist trap when flying for an independent cruise liner company once because one of his passengers was wanted. That particular company had shown Creamy the value of having manually detectable landing gears. While a pad had its maglocks clamped on a ship, it wasn’t going anywhere, Creamy didn’t mind if Citi Getaway kept his landing gears at all.

“Giles Romilly” Declared Creamy in the same manner as an ancient Greek in a bathtub “That’s the name to use on my request to the commander. Ninette, take this down please”

“J'ai déjà envoyé une demande avec le nom précédemment fourni monsieur.” Stated the computer

Creamy almost dropped the spanner he was using.

“You sent a bloody message under the name Seymour? Ninette, that’s a joke name I got off the fake bookcase hiding the drinks cabinet in fathers' study”

“Monsieur?”

Creamy stood up looking for the camera Ninette used to track him.

“What do you mean *sir?*” said Creamy doing a good job of mimicking Ninettes voice “It’s a funny name off a fake book. Like Coping with drink problems by Mustavar Swig, or Chastity and the modern Woman By Seymour Clee’vargh, and my personal favorite, The Secret To My Success by Yukarn Farcough. No one will agree to a request from Seymour Clee’vargh”

“Notre tâche a été acceptée et le propriétaire du DE-31K a répondu par une demande”

Creamy was genuinely surprised to get a positive response so quickly.

“He has? Well, let’s see the message then.. . Umm where the nearest console please Ninette? I have left my slate behind and I still don’t know this ship very well”

Creamy leaned on a console reading the message from a commander that would take a job from Seymour Clee’vargh and mumbled to himself as he read.

“Ha! … request too fishy to accept.. .. What's the catch?.. … little surprises in the net…Yours Lester C. Heheh, oh this chap gets it.”

Creamy got back to work as he dictated a reply. It looked like the hanger would be moved to the surface soon as long as he didn’t put the so-called Lester C off with his answers to the questions.
23 Aug 2020, 4:31pm
“Monsieur nous avons une réponse”

Creamy had almost got the first landing gear detached. He was pumping the support so the mount didn’t collapse into the socket once he removed the main hinge pin.

“A response already? Good heavens, he’s quick. Ninette, please read it out. Male voice, mid-twenties in an accent common to this region”

The computer obliged.

“Keep the cargo? I was going to abandon it in the nearest asteroid belt. Didn't you hear? Those fishes were whales. No miracle there.
I was already on my way. Don't expect to see you there.
Lester”

That was in response to Creamys’ previous message to Lester. He’d suggested Lester go feed some people on a mound if mound didn’t want to keep the fish. The man had a sense of humour, something that had been missing since he and Nerys were ambushed. Something else Creamy had typed came to mind.

Ninette, please read back the message I sent. English please.

“Good Evening Lester
Nothing fishy about it other than the content of the cargo containers meaning someone else already did all the catching.
The only surprising thing about this haulage job is that you don't have to take the cargo anywhere and you can keep it.
You could perhaps take it to a water world you discove. … “

“Stop there Ninette, thank you” interrupted Creamy.

That wasn’t entirely true. If Lester was on his way to the docks, he may run into whatever had made Station Security abandon watching A Knight of Goodness for Creamys’ return. Chances are that meant whatever it was would pose a danger to Lester.

“Ninette, Send this to Lester please”

Creamy dictated another message.

I did see a fair number of security officers dashing about down here. I do advise caution as I don’t know what had caused them to drop into quick response mode.

Forward is for armed what?
Seymore
