Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

JB led the way through the lower concourses as he and Effie headed towards the docks.

He'd already called Panza to go and fetch food for them. The noodle bar down in The Warrens wasn't exactly 5 Star Cuisine but it was the best noodles in a 20kly radius.

JB realised he'd kept Robert's card. Effie was right, he could've been good business had the booth not been invaded. JB knew his temper had got the better of him but he had to walk out. Better to lose a contact than to end up spending a couple of nights in the Local Pen.

"I never thought to ask," JB started as they found themselves in the colder corridors of the docks, "What kind of ship are you flying?"

"I never thought to ask," JB started as they found themselves in the colder corridors of the docks, "What kind of ship are you flying?"

“Don’t laugh” she replied, “My trusty old Cobra MKIV”.

Kate hates it and says it only draws the wrong kind of attention to us and I imagine she’s dead right. I just can’t help myself!” She laughs at me for thinking that it’s less obvious because it’s Matt Black and keeps threatening to throw pink paint all over it!”

“We ought to get ourselves something a little tougher and faster, that can carry a fighter, but I’ve only just remodelled my closet.”

“Brrrr” she shivered. “It’s cold tonight, someone’s turned down the thermostat!” She laughed!
18 Dec 2020, 12:25am
"Nothing wrong with the Mark Four," said JB. Without thinking he took off his brown leather gang jacket and draped it over Effie's shoulders. It wasn't until he'd done it that he thought that she wasn't some damsel in distress for him to patronise... she was more than capable of looking after herself.

But then, it would've been weird to snatch his jacket back now.

"Here we are then," said JB as they reached The Cuckoo.

With a click of his Comms device the ramp lowered, giving them a chance to board the Keelback. It would've been matt black too had most of the paint not been worn down.

As they entered the ship, JB led the way to one of the fancier business cabins. Inside it was clean and bright. JB lowered the lights a little and walked over to the sofa area.

Opening the bar he gestured towards the contents.

"If there's anything else you fancy I might have it in my quarters."

Effie was quite surprised at the gallantry JB exhibited. There is much more to this guy than he wants to show, she thought. He’s sweet.

Any other woman may have felt patronised when JB draped his colours around her, but she, quite genuinely, felt flattered by his thoughtfulness. Effie didn’t go in for the feminist equal this and don’t patronise me that. Where’s the fun and excitement in that? She’d shoot you on sight if she felt like it, but wasn’t about to stop a guy from holding a door for her, or for offering her his coat.

How odd she thought. This guy made her feel like she was fresh out of the Acadamy for brats, back on Achenar. It was a long time since a guy made her feel quite so intentionally vulnerable and she hadn’t been open to accept a guy’s attention since Miles.

This could go code red any minute, she thought, but something made her want to forget everything for a moment.

She let herself fall back into the sofa and when he asked her what she wanted to drink, she replied, Single Malt if you have it, beer if you don’t. Anything except that stuff you seem to enjoy that quite honestly, should be strictly kept for stripping paint! She laughed.

As JB turned toward the bar, she slipped out of her jacket and kicked off her boots with a sigh. “So, you’re a reading guy. Bought any good books lately?” She asked. suddenly she wondered if her awkward attempt at small talk, came across as awkwardly as it had sounded to her!
18 Dec 2020, 7:18am
JB clinked around in the bottles as he searched for a nice single malt. Finding one, he took out two tumblers and began to pour.

As he did so he thought back to the trouble in the bar and about spotting his friend Spud on the way out.

Whilst pouring he took out Robert's card and quickly messaged the number.

[Robert,

If you're still looking to shift that Tritium there's a guy on the station at the moment named Spud. If you're quick you'll probably find him in the bar.

He's trustworthy, discreet and part of a company that can probably manage some large-scale numbers.

JB Threepwood, (Mickey)] He also attached Spud's contact info.

JB moved the bottle and a small ice bucket and tongs to the small table in the sofa area then took their drinks over.

"Yeah, books..." JB pondered, his bunk had a couple of shelves packed with them. "I've collected copies for years. They're next door. They're all moody... counterfeit... and not worth anything but I just like them."

JB sat on the sofa.

"Are you much of a reader?"

"SCARF 1, I have a caustic missile on my tail! Going evasive!" McLaughlin frantically flipped through his firegroups, readying his decontamination limpets for use. "SCARF 4, you are too far away, I can't screen you with the shutdown field neutraliser when you are that fa..."

The man's fears were realised when he heard the tell tale roar from their enemy, a heavily damaged Medusa Interceptor which began emitting a fierce blue light. McLauhhlin tried desperately to manouver his ship towards the younger pilot's chieftain which was still trying to evade the alien missile but he was moving too fast for Dauntless to keep up.

A moment later the shutdown wave swept over the rest of the wing, SCARF 1, 2 and 3 were all protected by the SFN, however SCARF 4 soon went dark and began drifting aimlessly, and as if in slow motion, Gerry watched in horror as the caustic missile homed in and slammed into the Chieftain's cockpit.

"SCA... I'm hit... canopy... IT BURNS... I CANT..." The rest of the transmission cut off into garbled static with an occasional patch of screaming coming through. After a few moments the screaming stopped and a minute after that the chieftain's power plant went up and took the whole ship with it.

"CRUZ!" Gerry cried out as warning klaxons sounded on the ship's bridge of a new thargon swarm being launched. The klaxons deafened Gerry until he could hear nothing else.

-

Gerry awoke with a start, unaware of where he was for a moment, looking around in a daze until he remembered where he was, aboard Cyber Bird on Citi Gateway. He looked around for the source of the noise that had woken him up, his eyes finally falling on his comms device. Gerry sighed and picked it up, "forgot to mute it" he muttered as he checked the message he had received.

"Spud? The hell kinda name is that?"

Gerry pondered for a moment before growling and putting on his flight suit, putting his flight jacket over it, quickly splashing some water on his face, he quickly practiced his winning smile in the mirror, he then disembarked from his ship and began making his way towards the bar.

Robert came here for the Lakon meeting but now he had decided he wasn't leaving this station without finding a tritium supplier.

“A little” she replied. “currently I’m enjoying ancient earth novelists, mainly from the Victorian period, such as Dickens and the Brontë sisters. What on Earth life must have been like back then. Can you imagine? It seems so alien, so romantic yet cruel at the same time and those Napoleonic Uniforms!” She looked at him with her naughty face.

“I also enjoy a biography on occasion, if the subject is more interesting than self-served by the work. I recently picked up a copy of something on John Taylor of Tau Ceti”

“I love classical earth music too: Zeppelin, Floyd and Tull are my favourites”

Lucky Numbers” she said as JB passed her the Whisky.

Shut up Effie, you’re talking too much! She said crossly to herself. She turned toward him, took the glass from his hand and placed it upon the table. Then, she pushed him back into the soft sofa by his broad shoulders and kissed him.
18 Dec 2020, 7:32pm
JB leant in, his thumb ran along Effie's jawline as his hand gently rested on her neck.

He wasn't expecting the kiss. They may have had very different starts in life but they seemed to have both got to the same place in life. For the many things that were different about their personalities, the key things were the same...

...JB tried not to pick at it in case it unraveled and ruined everything.
18 Dec 2020, 7:55pm
She placed her index finger against his lips and, sitting up, she asked “Bathroom?”

"No, I'm good," he replied, about to lean back in, then realised the question.

"Sorry... it's just there," JB pointed to the door on the far side of the room past the double bed.

He sat up and smiled, straightened himself up and took a large gulp of his drink.
18 Dec 2020, 9:03pm
In the small cloakroom, Effie fixed herself and looked in the mirror. Good.

Just a quick message to Kate, which read, “I’m on a bird in the Hangar called ‘the Cuckoo’ with JB. Don’t wait up, but be a sweetie would you and if I haven’t returned by 5am, call me on the pretence of emergency.”

One last check in the mirror and she returned to JB in his little passenger suite.

The door slid open and she leant against its frame, in just her sports bra and knickers. Looking across the small space between them. “Well?” She said, with a smile...
18 Dec 2020, 10:10pm
JB was blown away, Effie was striking when fully dressed... in her underwear she was paralysing.

JB stood up and pulled his tight, long-sleeve t-shirt over his head.

He kept himself in good shape, the boxing gym back home was a meeting place for most of the gang so he spent a lot of his time there.

The only problem was that most of his left side was a patchwork of scars and his left hand and forearm were bionic replacements. His "good side" was covered in gang, prison and nautical tattoos.

He hoped it wouldn't put Effie off.

"C'mere, Red" he growled with a grin.
19 Dec 2020, 12:33am
As his T came over his head, Effie was genuinely quite startled. She’d known many people with the odd sign of action before, but JB looked like he’d fought bare handed in every war since Waterloo!

In typical Effie fashion, when shocked, she immediately retreats into humour and she said, “Call that a scar!?”

Thats not a scar! THIS IS A SCAR!” she giggled, as she held the elastic top of her panties down just an inch, to reveal the tiniest sign that she had had her appendix removed when she was twelve.

“You won’t break me will you? she said as she sauntered over to him, placed an arm around his right shoulder and held his left arm. Before he knew what was happening she had performed a perfect O Soto Gari and he was suddenly flat on his back next to the bed, with Effie straddling his waist.

She smiled down at him and, crossing her arms as she did so, she pulled her sports bra over head and immediately leant down and kissed him like she really meant it.
19 Dec 2020, 1:23am
[Panza,

Leave the noodles by the door and fuck off 'til I call you]

...was the "sock on the doorhandle" message JB sent to his android copilot.
19 Dec 2020, 10:23am
As Effie lay there, feeling happier and more secure than she had felt for a long time, her comm link beeped. It was Kate. Right on schedule. Effie smiled. Could she be anymore reliable she thought!

“Effie!” Kate said, in her stern voice, “I thought you may like to know that an entire damn Federal fleet is sitting at anchor just off Station and an Admiral with his Staff are currently polluting the Bar. The whole Station’s in a form of hysterical self imposed lockdown!”

Effie smiled and said in a whisper, so as not to wake JB, “Impressive Kate! I know I asked to you call on the pretence of emergency, but this story is so outlandish it wouldn’t wash. This guys no dope. A simple problem with the retro’s or a plumbing emergency would have sufficed!”

She thought, ‘An entire Fleet and an Admiral! She rolled her eyes. “Can you come up with something a little more believable and call me back?” She grinned.

“I’M BEING SERIOUS EFFIE!!!”. Kate shouted back so loudly that JB stirred. “There’s an Admiral in the Bar RIGHT NOW with his Guard and Robert’s in there with JB’s buddy, Spud!” There was a short pause as both women were obviously weighing things up.

Effie sat up. “What’s his Flagship registry?”

“FDA HAND OF DOMINATION” Kate replied after checking the contacts list on her console.  “do you know him?”

“I don’t think so, we should be fine if we lay low until he makes his intentions here more obvious” replied Effie. “Is there any military presence around the Hangar bays?”

“Nope”

Effie told Kate to stay on alert and shook JB vigorously. “Wake up babe” she said with a hand resting on his chest.
