Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Ridge watches the woman leave, ignoring the others at his side.

Corner of Central and Eights in two hours? Fine. It'll take longer than that to finish up the micro-welds on the Misadventure anyway.

He glances at the man who placed the crystal in her hands, looking again at the woman as the lift doors close around her in the distance.

Foolish to give or accept something of value like that...

He turns back toward the pilots' lounge, a wry expression on his features.

Almost as foolish as offering a berth on the Misadventure to a woman you just met.

Ridge glances over his shoulder. He can almost see her, still cursing at the terminal.

And you never even caught her name.

Atlas just watched the chaos with a faintly amused look as he watched and listened to everything that happened. He kept quiet, taking in the conversations, the trades, the offers, the deals. The offer of the alien artifacts was amusing to him, and he was tempted to offer to buy a few to work on his own experiments in his lab on the Auriga. So he instead made his way to his own ship, the Leviathan, and started working on some pre-flight checks instead.

JB headed through the docks towards his hangar. Cookie and Dutch, two other members of JB's crew, left him and Panza and headed towards their DBXs.

JB's latest mission briefing had been pretty vague, he was hoping that there was more information sent to his ship's computer. Hostile Retrieval Missions can be a nightmare so the more intel you can get the better. A name like Creamy Goodness felt like it needed more explanation.

When they made it to the hangar, Panza opened the ship and made his way up the ramp into the beaten-looking Keelback.

JB reached into his jacket pocket, took out his hipflask and took a large slug of what turned out to be tequila... he wasn't sure how long it would be until he would be in a space this open for a while.

JB put the hipflask away as he heard Panza going through the preflight checks.

It takes Veronica almost ten minutes to cover the distance from the cafe to the docks. She walks along the corridor towards her hangar, then keeps going, checking the access panels beside each hatch as she goes. She ignores the panel at hangar seven, in which Ridge's ship is berthed, and then stops at the very next hangar.

The access panel beside the hatch bears a wireframe image of a Federal Corvette, together with the ship's name: Leviathan. Next to the panel there is a small speaker grill, beside which is a green button with a white bell etched into it.

Veronica presses the green button and waits for an answer.

JB sat in the cockpit of The Cuckoo, his Rat-Rocket Keelback, as it sat prepared to leave Citi Gateway. His copilot, an android he named Panza, sat in the cockpit's second seat.

He went through the details that were forwarded to him from some insurance company named "Sovereign Shield".

JB groaned as he pulled up the screen that had the client's tracker on it.

"Fuck me... it's on the move. Why can't people keep their hostages in one place."

He took a moment as he went through possible plans in his head.

"Ok, Panza, any of the lads back down in "Uncle Stinky's" tech-heads? Don't want to risk blowing the client up so we'll just drop in and do a "Goondock Well"... they'll never let you on board."

"No, Gaffer, no Techs," replied Panza.

JB glared at Panza.

"We're against the clock, mate. Check the pilots who have logged on for work in the station... cross reference and see if there's anything you can dig up on them... qualified techs or have a work history with tech companies."

Panza was already hardwired to The Cuckoo so it didn't take long to access the station's systems.

"Three, Gaffer," replied Panza, "But none have a current history as a Tech. Cameras show all three in The Bar."

"Jesus Malverde... ok, check the bar transactions and give me the details on the one who's bought the least booze."

Panza took a second and then the details popped up on JB's screen.

JB quickly tapped a message to the Commander that Panza had selected.

[Ina Muir,

I have urgent work for someone of your skill set!

You will be paid well for your time, your haste and your discretion!

JB pressed "send" then got up out of his seat, hurriedly making his way to the exit ramp. He checked the time on his Comms Unit... JB figured he had about 10 minutes until this job offer "turned into a pumpkin".

"Hangar 03... Hangar 03... Yup, that one."

Ina stopped near the entry door marked "03" and made a few deep breaths after some quite fast walking. Then she pressed a button on a hangar comms panel, took off her rifle from a shoulder and moved two steps back. "Armed/Rds:80" was visible on the weapon's little status screen.

"Okay, now you are going to tell me who you are and what do you need from me..."
03 May 2021, 10:28pm
Atlas blinks at the sudden buzzing, tapping at the communication piece in his ear as the panel in front of his ship went off. His mechanical eye whirred faintly, displaying an image on his retina before he just chuckles and nods to himself, perched atop one of the massive quad-barreled cannons on the top of the ship.

"Hello again! Please, do go ahead and come in, I'm just working on some maintenance on my ship. Let me unlock the door." And the door swings from red to green, unlocking for Veronica to enter if she so chose to.
03 May 2021, 11:02pm
JB paced around Hangar 3, checking the time on his comms unit. Time was running out and he'd have to leave soon, he wanted to get a visual on the ship the beacon was on before something happened to the client... or the beacon.

"Finally!" JB thought to himself. Without even checking on who the person behind the door was, JB slammed his hand against the hangar's door release button. It gave out a gentle "hiss" as it opened but JB was already halfway up the ramp to his ship.

"We'll go through everything once we're on our way!" JB yelled back to Ina, without seeing her or the rifle. "Get your shit on the ship, we're gears-up in 5 seconds!"

Ina stood there for a second, thinking about how much careless that move was.

"Aww. That's just cute. I've never seen traps that was looking like that, hey, he just turned his back to me."

Then she walked through the entry door, giving a quick look to the left, right and the balconies. Only to see nobody. Even the automated defence turrets were offline and peacefully stowed into their compartments. The ship that stood in the hangar was a shabby-looking Keelback, its ramp was opened and... Yes, no armed people was visible there too.

"That's odd. Looks like he's really here to give me some work while I have nothing to do. But... I have to pilot THIS?"

Ina lowered her rifle and quickly followed a man to the ramp, however, still trying to visually check everything on her sides, around the crates and behind the landing gear, but much probably there was actually nobody except him and whoever could be inside the ship. Then she entered the Keelback and stopped right after the ramp, so she could see as much as possible, and switched her magboots on to have a better chance of staying on feet in case of rapid takeoff. All this situation looked super odd to her.

"Hey!", Ina yelled, trying to get the attention of that strange person, "What the heck?". And this question was followed by a loud boot stomp. Just in case.

"Panza, get into Cabin 1 and use the terminal to track that beacon," JB ordered his android copilot. "...and you, New Guy," JB yelled back to Ina as he heard her yell from further back in the ship, "...get your arse up here into the cockpit... I need to talk to you!"

Panza got up out of the copilot seat and walked to Cabin 1. As he walked down the corridor, Panza noticed the rifle Ina was holding.

"Gaffer... rifle," Panza stated as he walked to the cabin. It opened revealing a luxury room in stark contrast to the beaten-up exterior of The Cuckoo. Panza ignored Ina and walked straight in, closing the cabin behind him.

"Unless you're planning on shooting all the terminals when we get there you won't need that!" JB called, impatience growing in his voice. He saw his new crew member was inside the ship so he began to raise the ramp and started the launch process. "Now get up here before you're pancaked up the back of my ship!"
04 May 2021, 12:50am
"Hm. An android co-pilot. He did a good job on the disguise, but voice and some sharp movements are noticeable. That could be a problem... somehow... maybe. And... what's that tone?"

"Hey. What's that tone?", asked Ina loudly as she was moving through the corridor to the cockpit.

When she entered the cockpit and it was no need to yell loudly anymore, she said with her usual neutral calm voice, "Of course you need to talk with me. Glad to see you can do it. Was some careless move, turning your back like you did."

Then she noticed a launch countdown on a main HUD and asked, "So, could I sit down and we talk like a reasonable people, without that bossing of yours? I don't like it."
04 May 2021, 1:21am
JB had been in too much of a hurry to worry about pleasantries. That was out of character. He knew you could catch more flies with honey rather than vinegar, but time had been of the essence.

He'd been in so much of a rush to chase down the client that he hadn't paid any attention to Ms Muir's details. He now noticed that she was about 10 years younger than him... maybe in her mid twenties? She wasn't one of his guys from back home, they were all used to barking quick information at each other. JB took a beat as it dawned on him how rude it must have sounded.

"Please, Commander Muir, hop into the copilot seat," JB began calmly and earnestly, "We need to get this bird in the air right now... once we're up we can talk till we're hoarse. Until then...please?" JB extended his arm in a gesture towards the secondary seat, slightly behind and to the right of his own.
04 May 2021, 1:54am
"Sure", said Ina, putting her rifle into 'Safety' mode before placing it into a side clamps on a co-pilot seat, so it won't shoot accidentally and won't be floating around at zero-G. Having noticed that personal container for co-pilot stuff had a code lock, she just rolled up her belt and clamped it to the seat too. Then she sat down and noticed that this seat was much more comfortable than could be a seat of a ship looking that beaten. Actually, sitting in a cockpit and looking forward through canopy glass gave her a bit of long-awaited feelings: her ship was in maintenance, and what looked like a 'deserved rest' began to be boring at a second week. So she caught herself at staring forward for a few seconds.

"No need to be over-courteous though", she added after that pause, still looking forward through the canopy, "I'm just used to work alone. And meet people only when I want to."

"That faint alcohol smell all over the cockpit... Jacket with some kind of crest and inscription on the back... No wonder if it turn out to be some gang or smugglers or something like that. Worked with this type before, could backfire at any moment, sometimes they think that they're smarter than they are actually... But anyway I had nothing to do down there on the station. Can't drop the guard however."

"So you're in a haste? And why do you need me here, not some random anybody else?"

Veronica frowns and clicks her tongue in irritation.

"Am I wearin' a ruddy sign on my 'ead or somethin'?" she mutters to herself as she enters the hangar.

Ahead of her is a Federal Corvette, its access hatch open. But there is no immediate sign of its owner. Veronica listens for any signs of activity, then cups her hands to her mouth.

"HALLO?" she yells, "ANYBODY IN?"

"Up here!" Comes the return call from atop the vessel with a boisterous reply. "Be down in just a moment!" The man was all but straddling one of the massive multi-cannons before sliding off and climbing his way down the ship. Atlas chose to fall the rest of the way once there was nothing left to climb on, landing with a huff of air then walking over to Veronica. He made a point of cleaning off his hands thoroughly before offering the right to her.

"Good to see you again. That appraisal and café meet-up go well for you?"
