Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Atlas snickers at that. "He's actually the reason why one of my combat tactics is using the massive weight of the Leviathan to ram vessels. It has heavily reinforced shielding, thankfully, but Loki here decided to hit boost while I was in a dogfight. Ended up plowing straight through an FDL." He scritches the happy blue monkey on the head before getting a small cake and setting it down.

The monkey was on it immediately.

"Booncakes. They love them."
09 May 2021, 3:32pm
"So I see."

Veronica watches Loki devour the booncake, then checks her wristcomm.

"Just keepin' my eye on the time," she explains. "Wouldn't want to keep my business partner waitin'. Still got a few minutes, though. Where are you off to next, then, mate?"
09 May 2021, 5:10pm
"Make sure everything is prepped and rearmed on the Auriga for support and capital ship fire support and back to war once again." He huffs in annoyance before leaning back with a weary sigh. "The Imperium might not be totally innocent, but there is no factual proof as of yet that they're guilty either, especially since the info came from the NMLA."
09 May 2021, 6:15pm
Veronica twists her lips tightly before she replies.

"Off to Paresa, are yer? Well, good luck with that, mate. None of 'em are totally innocent, anyway. That Hadrian Duval fella's a funny one, an' no mistake. What'd'you reckon about 'im bein' the mastermind of the NMLA? Truth or tosh?"
09 May 2021, 6:24pm
He sighs. "Truthfully? I think he's a convenient scapegoat at present. I don't plan on pointing fingers until more information comes to light." Atlas makes a low humming noise, something more akin to a distant rumble of thunder than anything else as he pauses to blink at Loki, the Buurboon coming over and patting his arm, recognizing the annoyed growl in his voice.

"Thanks little buddy." He pets the monkey before looking back at Veronica. "If such a time does come to pass that he is the mastermind, despite having been critically wounded by them, I'll be on the line pointing my guns down his throat."
09 May 2021, 7:35pm
"Yeah, well... He's gunna need a ruddy big throat, ain't he, what with the number of enemies he's made. On both sides, includin' most of 'is own family. Apart from Aislin', of course."

Veronica sniffs in disdain.

"But I reckon you're right. Hadrian's bein' set up for a fall. Question is, who by?"

A red Diamondback Explorer (not really that red anymore, as paint was just missing from some parts of the hull) trundles through the mail slot, its hull covered in burn marks, dents and gashes. Engines sputtering, causing it to abruptly jerk right or left, it limps toward a landing pad. Somehow, it manages to plant itself on the landing pad with a loud thunk followed by a quiet tinkle-tinkle caused by an assortment of nuts and bolts falling from the ship upon the pad. The platform descends into the hangar and a ramp starts to extend down towards the floor. It (the ramp) makes it about three-quarters of the way, before coming to a screeching, shuddering halt.

A smiling young man, wearing sunglasses and seemingly oblivious to the dilapidated state of his ship, steps onto the defective ramp and jumps down the rest of the way. As he walks to leave the hangar, he looks back at his ship, smoking and sparking in several places. "She'll be alright", he thinks. "Now, to find something fun to do!", he says and heads toward the bar.

The dockmaster, having seen this sorry excuse of a ship haphazardly plop itself down on his landing pad, wanted to tell the young pilot about the state of his ship. He ultimately decided against it though. A newjack coming out of a wreck like that with a smile on his face, was just something he didn't want to deal with right now. "I'm too old for this shit", he grumbles and returns to read a GalNet news article.

"Did I wake you?"

I climbed the few steps into the ship. It was bigger than I remembered, but then they are all huge. It smelt reasonable, my acute sense of smell could be a problem, one of my faults.

"No need to go to any trouble. Things took longer than I thought. Bag's not heavy. You're the Captain on your ship, I'm just a passenger. Do you carry serious weapons?"

I could hear myself speaking, sounding very abrupt, almost to the point of rudeness. The last couple of days had not gone well. To top it all, the dockmaster had been particularly difficult. I unzipped my jacket.

"let me get out of these work clothes, then you can fill me in on what I need to know."

The cabin was certainly comfortable, good for a long trip, not really necessary for the day or two I was planning to stay. I put a loose jumpsuit on over my Remlock.

"That's a good question. One I hope is answered soon." He huffs faintly, leaning back with a sigh as he takes another sip of his tea. "At the very least, I think it's NMLA, and I'm very happy to just murder them wholesale." Atlas smirks faintly.

"Your thoughts?"
11 May 2021, 9:50am
Veronica takes a breath then exhales sharply, so that her lips wobble to produce a loud snorting noise.

"Dunno, mate. I mean yeah, it could be NMLA. Could be Arissa, or Patreus. Could be 'udson. Could even be 'is missis, whatsername, Astrid innit? These days it's 'ard to tell for definite which ones are the bigger bleedin' villains. Me personally, I don't trust any of 'em as far as I can chuck 'em."

She wrinkles her nose and shrugs.

"No, I wasn't sleeping. You startled me when you hit the stairs..."

"Weapons?..."

"Uh, sure take your time get comfortable..."

"Are you o-..." He trailed off as Descartes walked into the cabin and shut the door.

"Okay?..." He said to himself as he hits a button and closes the hatch looking around the docks for anyone following her. Once the hatch was closed he goes to the kitchen and fixes some tea and an orange juice with no ice in a couple of travel mugs and brings them with him along with some small pastries, one he carries in his mouth the other on top of Descartes's cup. Setting the drinks down at the appropriate chairs on the bridge Sam sits down in his chair at the helm and eats his pastry.

I wonder what's up... Something 'that maybe needed her attention' over the last two days for sure. Something didn't go as planned. Hope that doesn't come back to bite us...
Bah it'll be fine. It's one jump and about two hours of supercruise to get two the station

The docks were lively and full of workers making their way from one landing pad to another, making repairs and performing routine maintenance as Tada walked through the docking bay, making an effort to walk straight and not stumble occasionally as he tried to remember which pad the ship was docked on. He considered contacting them to get a reminder before he shook his head and continued walking. If she finds out I forgot which pad was ours she'll never let me live it down. Was it 51 or 52?

Tada eventually settled on 51, walking up to the access pad and narrowing his eyes, slowly and deliberately typing in the code to open the hatch leading to the pad proper. After hitting the last number and tapping the enter key, the hatch opened to reveal the Sea's greetings, the workers had vacated the pad and the immediate area in antcipation of the vessel's imminent departure. Tada breathed a sigh of relief as he walked to the entrance hatch, this time typing in a different code while also tapping the small device embedded in his ear, activating his comm link.

"Tada here, opening the hatch." While the code alone indicated it was him, it never hurt to give watchful sentries advance notice of your arrival. Everyone's sure to be on edge after the attacks. With this in mind Tada stepped through the hatch to be greeted by the sight of Tanaka sat on a stool watching the hatch, at this point she had also doffed her armour and was now wearing a flight suit. Sat inspecting her nails with a relaxed look on her face, she would have perfectly matched the image of a bored deckhand were it not for the shotgun laid across her lap, ready to spew burning plasma at any uninvited guests at a moments notice.

Tanaka laid her hands on her lap, shifting the shotgun so it was now resting against the wall. Her eyes met Tada's as she greeted him, "Anything noteworthy happen?" Tada sighed as he undid the holster at his waist and removed it, "Nothing noteworthy, just the usual bunch of pilots along with a couple of freaks and crackpots thrown into the mix." Tada thought of all the strange things he'd seen since leaving home. What the hell even is normal anymore?

Tanaka nodded as she stood up. Picking up her shotgun up and turning towards her quarters. Tada sighed before calling out to her, "Aoi." Tanaka stopped before turning around to face Tada again with a raised eyebrow but otherwise made no comment, waiting for him to speak. Tada grimaced as he spoke, "I'm... sorry for being an asshole earlier." Aoi frowned before sitting back down and crossing her legs, waiting expectantly. "I'm not sure what you mean." She proceeded to gently stroke the shotgun, "Could you be more specific?"

Tada's eyebrow furrowed, "Aoi, you know what. Please don't make me say it." Aoi held his gaze for a few moments before exhaling through her nose and leaning her head against the bulkhead behind her, closing her eyes. "I know. I'm sorry too Kai, I shouldn't be trying to boss you around all the time, I just... I worry all the time Kai." We've been away from home for too long. Tada hummed as he laid a hand on her shoulder as he walked past. As he did so he activated an intercom next to the hatch to contact the bridge. "Commodre, Tada here. When are we depa..." Before Tada could finish he felt a sudden jolt as the ship's landing gear was disengaged and began retracting back into the ship.

The Commodre's voice crackled on the intercom, "We're departing for the Tata system now. Wingrove's a Fed station and there are no friendly faces to be found in that neck of the woods so we're going to be trying to stay low key. Get some rest while you two can, you've got an interesting time ahead of you." With that the Commodre's voice cut off and Tada and Tanaka were left in silence. Something's off with him. Too tired to deal with it right now though. Tada extended a hand to Aoi, "You heard the man, Tata's over 200LY away." A small smile appeared on Tada's face, "I don't know what this Barboni guy is like but if he knows something we'll find out."

Tanaka smirked and accepted Tada's hand, rising to her feet, she eyed up the shotgun. "You think the Commodre would let..."

"No."

While Tanaka continued bargaining and making a case for why a high powered shotgun should be considered a "personal defence weapon", the Alliance Crusader slipped free of the docking bay and glided out through the mailslot before promptly making the jump into Witch Space.

"Neither do I. So I treat them all the same. Paying clients I am free to say no to." He snorts, finishing his tea.

"Either way, I think that hour is close to about up, isn't it? Rather not have some madman claiming I'm stealing his prize by keeping her around."
13 May 2021, 1:39pm
Veronica takes another look at her wristcomm and nods.

"Blimey," she says. "don't time fly when yer 'avin fun. I s'pose I'd best be off. Wouldn't want to get myself spaced out of the airlock for turnin' up a few minutes late, now would I?"

She rises to her feet and fastens her jacket.

"I ain't 'is prize, though, mate. The bloke's just a temporary business partner, that's all. I don't belong to anyone, see? Free spirit, that's me. Always 'ave been, always will be, an' that's the way I like it. Anyhow..."

She gives her host a grin and turns to leave the mess room.

"Ta very much for the tea. An' watch what yer doin' in Paresa, eh? I'll see myself out."
