Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Having woken up in the bar once more after falling asleep inside it for a second time, and finding it to still be fairly deserted, I decided to turn my attention to the docks themselves. I'd entirely ignored them prior, and now, I wanted a distraction from me royally screwing up the chance I had at interacting with someone who appeared to have a genuine interest for me.

They provided well enough on that front, as I simply observed the activity in the market, and various other warehouses spread around the place. I eventually went to my ship to grab a credit chip, in case something I wanted caught my attention. I had the money to spend - too much of it, in fact - and didn't much care what it cost, if it looked worth it to me.

Before I returned to the market, I checked one of the local monitors for the news, and was quite amused to find a brief mention of the open letter to Azimuth I'd published not long ago in the corner of a page. Everything else was dedicated to local developments in human politics, the Thargoid War, or the GalNet news service, alongside bits and bobs of information not particularly relevant to a visitor like me.

I planned to be, anyway. I'd come here to get a break from being stuck planetside, and the station had plenty to provide in that regard, so I intended to get started proper. But even trying to push aside my failure to socialize at the bar, and willingness to make a positive experience during my limited stay, I kept having to think about the woman. Why she chose to approach me, of all people. I rarely, if ever, attracted attention from whichever corner I happened to be watching from.

Having those thoughts repeatedly, I kept a mental note to address it later, if I saw her again. Not that it would be simple for me, given my shy, antisocial nature... but for now, I had a station to explore, and embarrassment to forget.

Continued from the bar

I quickly passed through the docks to reach the Krait Phantom that I had parked up inside it. The area still didn’t inspire much confidence in me, as most security seemed to remain focused on the warehouses themselves.

As soon as I was onboard, I sealed the ship off entirely, and set alerts to only be relayed to my personal cabin. If anyone tried getting inside without my consent, that would only alert me to the intruder. Hopefully.

The message from Willow on my tired mind, I quickly slipped out of the suit and took care of biological needs before putting on some sleepwear and tucking in. I began to read it once I was settled comfortably.

‘Hi, so yeah, I kind of saw that with the guy you know, but like. . I mean I don't know I tried to help out and sort of lost my way I guess. And tonight was, Ephrain you know. Ok maybe you don't. He's the one with the shaved head and the beard that does all the talking. He waaay much, for real. But, so I'm going to bed, and I got like real long shifts, but maybe I'll see you around the station. Night‘

I read the message two or three times to get it right in my head. I assumed she’d already be sleeping, but typed up a response anyway.

‘I don’t know, still feel like I could have reacted better there. Like, not trying to come across like I wasn’t interested, you know?

Anyway, been meaning to ask… do I look like this ‘Dee’ much that you, like… I don’t know, mistook me for them? Just asking. Stuff like that just happens sometimes.

Not really sure if I’ll be on the station much longer, though. Not sure I can be, to be honest. Shouldn’t really be here to begin with…

If I do hang around, try to keep me off that Ephrain guy. I don’t like belligerent smartasses, and if he gets mouthy at me again, I might feel tempted to teach him a lesson. And I’d rather not cause trouble for the station. Would also pose problems for my plan to (eventually) apologize to your team.

Kira’

I closed the interface and sent off the message, then hid entirely in the bed. A sleeping bag on the wall was also available for zero G environments, but the rotation of the starport provided enough gravity that I didn’t need it.

Doubts about my actions started going through my head as I lay there. Silvia hadn’t really taken notice of my sudden headache, or just didn’t show it, but it was not of natural causes. And I began to question whether I should have been doing this at all.

Was it something that I wanted to tell them about? It was difficult to hide, and yet, despite me coming out about it openly prior, none of them seemed to be aware of my connection. And did I want to expose them to the risk of being associated to me?

The thoughts made me feel uneasy, so I did my best to force them into a dark corner of my mind, and let them stay banished so that I could sleep and think things over with a properly functioning brain.

Creamy decided to do something for the workers on the station.
04 May 2023, 10:04pm
I received Willow's message as I was in the cockpit of the ship, toying around with various settings around it, and decided it was worth my attention more than some tweaks that didn't really affect anything.

'Hi K

I'm on lunch at last, like the shift is never ending you know?
So right this Dee is just the first
No wait, I was trying to pretend to be someone you knew well so like that guy would think like Oh, she's here with a friend and you could say something like Hi .. Jill, yeah great to see you let's catch up over here away for this guy. You know like a trick. Guess I saw it on a holo and gave it a shot
Life isn't a holo right?

Oh and yeah, there's a Dee, but you guys don't look the same, and she totally hates being called Dee.
See you round and like look out for creeper guys.'

I didn't need much time to read through the message, a skill from being overtly turned away from people, and just started typing. Simpler to follow where my brain went that way, rather than to overthink what to start with. Especially with a lot of its capacity devoted to the cortical implant.

'Hi, Willow.

I decided I'll stay a bit more. Hope I'm not too curious or anything. Keep thinking I write too much stuff into one thing. Also heard you guys have it pretty bad, working 14 hour shifts with only one day off a week. And terrible pay to take meals.

Anyway, I think those holos are like, made for... how can I put this? 'Social' people, where they realize what you're trying to do. I miss it more often than not. Not sure what made me visit that bar in the first place. Must've been really bored. But creepy guys aren't the ones who I'm worried are looking for me. I've, uh, broken a few arms, when they didn't learn their lesson.

I'm starting to drag on again. Let me just say, I've got a surprise waiting, next time you and the guys on your team show up at the bar. If the locals didn't take it all until your next leave, at least. You're probably also wondering how I got to message you in the first place.

- K'

I found communicating like this far easier than to have to figure out what to do with one another in a conversation, without really knowing the other person. Especially if no natural flow established itself quickly, and that seemed to be difficult to do with two shy people. So in that regard, I was perfectly happy to figure things out through text messages.

I wondered whether my gesture would come on well, or if I completely misjudged how it would be received by her and the workers. Peeking into the bar from the market a little earlier showed it was pretty much devoid of activity currently, so I hadn't bothered going in there for now, and just returned to my ship, where I felt safe. Mostly, at least. Knowing the kind of people that were out there looking for me, I had reasons to be overly cautious.

Ephrain lifted his holo-pad to read an atrial to his team sat around the table.

“Oh, Seo has used her unique insights to bring us a most shocking revelation about the mysterious and enigmatic shadow known as the Thargoids”

Mark stopped chewing to listen and Damran paid attention too, although he didn’t let that get in the way of his next stack of hot-wings.

“Well?” asked Mark wondering if Ephrain’s news was worth listening to.

“Apparently, the Thargoids are expecting us to penetrate their deadly clouds very soon” relayed Ephrain with no emotional inflection.

“Oh” answered Mark. “I’m so glad mankind has a spy with such dazzling insights”

“Yeah” added Damran “I mean, what military mind would ever considered dat their enemy would develop a countermeasure to their defences, lettin them expect and attack. That’s just crazy thinking right there”

“Hmm” agreed Ephrain “Its news, but I do hope she is using her ability for more helpful insights about the swarm”
05 May 2023, 3:56pm
It was good to see the guys getting on. They got on just fine when they were on task; it was the free time that usually caused friction. Willow dipped her fishfinger into the blob of extract she had dripped onto her plate and pushed it around while she listened to them talk.

"Yeah, that dose sound a bit, like, pointless, or not news worthy at least" she said getting to the point. "But like, what are we doing here, in this food court? I didn't think independents accepted a meal chitty"
05 May 2023, 5:44pm
"Who gives a shit?" answered Damran sucking spicy meat off a bone "Soon as D shift told me the market took chitties, I was comin down for the wings. This dude does the best chicken in the whole dang system and the company is paying for it. Yes sir"

"Actually, the company as you put it paid for the normal portion, you paid for the family platter you're currently guzzling" corrected Ephrain.

"Shut your ass up boi. Spoilin mi dinna" said Damran between chomps.

"Yes, well to answer your question Will, I think the slaves had something to do with this, or more accurately, the company that owns them" continued Ephrain.

"Yeah, power to the people" said Mark glad to know he was more than just a worker.

"Don't get too excited, you're still a slave"

"And your still a dick"

Ignoring Mark's retort, Ephrain continued "I would imagine the Imperial company that supplied the slaves got wind of the meal cuts and made sure their people were not effected by the changes, because the terms for supplying what I estimate to be a third of the work force would have been set in stone before they arrived"

"Honestly" said Mark "When you guys were complaining about the ticket things, I kept my mouth shut because my food allowance hadn't changed. Sorry"

"You see" said Ephrain nodding towards Mark "So, you got all those Imp slaves running around getting fed properly, and the paid workers getting stiffed. Eventually, we would notice the inconsistency in equable treatment, and CIti would have an unhappy work force. Simple"
05 May 2023, 5:52pm
"Ok yeah, like if you say so I guess. But like, that doesn't tell me why everyone started taking the chitties"

It wasn't often Ephrain missed the point or got something wrong, so Willow was going to tease him about it.

"I mean, that's all very clever guess work, so like, were you just showing off or did you get so wrapped up in how great you think you are, you forgot the question?"

Willow took a victory chomp on her extract flavored Fishstick.
05 May 2023, 6:40pm
Rolling his eyes, Ephrain thought to him self, Do I always have to take people by the hand?

"Listen Will, the station gives us meal vouchers in place of the, order anything from approved suppliers, we were told we could use. So, they roll that back, but they can't do that to the slaves, because their management company is basically a union. If Citi upset them, they will pull their men, oh, and women off site, causing Citi a serious workforce shortage"

"Now, to stop us complaining that they, the slaves, are getting more than us, leading to people quitting, and the worker's that stay doing a poor job in protest, Citi open the vouchers up to the privet vendors. Under the old system, Citi was basically buying our food from themselves, so to save money, they wanted to limit what we could order. Letting outside suppliers accept the vouchers, means Citi doesn't have to buy food from its own stocks now, and the privet vendors can jockey for the worker's patronage"

"There are not a lot of people visiting right now, but there are a lot of workers, so it makes sense for the vendors here to offer as much as they can, to get more of the vouchers to exchange for credits. Do you see?

"Citi may have lost a little control of their predictable cash flow, and the tax deductibles feeding us provides, but they don't have to provide as much food as before, and we get a better choice of what to eat, while stimulating the ailing local economy"

"Of course, that does mean we are at the mercy of supply and demand again. If food prices go up because of low supply, the vouchers may become worthless. If enough food is bought to the station at the right price, everyone should be happy. Do you understand now?" finished Ephrain as if talking to children.

Mark had let a fork full of food go cold halfway to his mouth listening to the explanation. Damran hadn't stopped eating, but he did slow down.

"Damn it boi, how do you know so damn much about every damn thing?" asked Damran obviously impressed.

"Education mostly, natural talent, and common senses. Now if you'll excuse me, the free lecture on local economics is over" said Ephrain putting his nose back in his pad.
05 May 2023, 8:43pm
I noticed Willow's group from my isolated position as I was eating, but as I still had the incident in the bar fresh in my mind - as did they, most likely - and they appeared to be having a decent conversation, not that I heard any of it, I kept my attention focused on the food.

My presence would likely not do much good for their mood, and I had no interest in being the culprit behind another messy situation, so I hoped none of them would notice me until I finished eating and was gone. Nor did I particularly want them to associate Willow to me in any way, given how the first meeting with her team went.

Part of me suspected she shared similar feelings on the subject, too.
05 May 2023, 9:02pm
So that had put Willow in her place, but that's what Ephrain liked to do. Flexing his intellectual superiority made him feel good about him self. With Seo Jin-ae's not-at-all startling insight that the Goids were ready for us talked about, and the mystery of the food court solved, the team had nothing left to discuss that wasn't work related.

With half a plate of Fishstick, fries and fried mushrooms to go, and a bout half an hour before it was time to get ready for evening shift, Willow decided to answer Kira's last message.

Yeah, the company screwed us over, but like apparently we'ed be jealous of the Imps or something, so we can eat anywhere now. OK that sounds weird, but Ephie explains it better.

And yeah, I'm not a bar person either, but like, ya gotta try right. Like, do the normal thing what ever that means. And I kind of don't have a choice right now. Team spirit you know.. Yay.. I guess.

Anyway, speaking of the bar, I don't think the guys are going there again you know? Specially now the market is open. Like Ridge really LOVES Hot-Wings. Anyway, I got work soon and a dinner to finish. I'm trying fresh food! Well, like some of it is fresh, but the Fishsticks are proper pre-pack.

Take care
Will

My sleep was interrupted, this time not by a nightmare or the voices, but by a persistent wake-up alarm. I turned it off, just a little grumpy, and rolled around in the bed. Then it started off again.

"I swear... I did not turn you on.", I mumbled, and rolled back to the other side to shut the digital clock off completely.

"Wake up, Kira.", a voice told me. Not in my head. I quickly identified it as EDI's, raising some concerns.

"What is it?", I asked, sounding as sleepy as I felt.

My answer came through the wrist computer buzzing and lighting up. I looked at the information presented on it to me, and whatever weariness I felt quickly left me. Someone had been accessing station activity logs and security footage, specifically looking for me. I threw the bed covers away and sat on its side.

"Do you think it's... them?", I asked, rubbing my eyes to clear them.

"I cannot say, but it is almost certain.", EDI replied.

"Okay... okay. Plan..." I quickly slipped into my Artemis suit while I thought. "Diversion. Have an idea. Make them chase after the ship while I stay. Take it to the Orunmilla... location is in the nav computer."

I grabbed the Tormentor pistol I usually kept in my cabin and held it in my right hand. If the AI had any objections, she didn't make them heard as I left the ship, and hid away in a dark corner of the docking bay, out of sight. Four armed guards led by a man in a business attire came through the bay entrance... just in time to see the pad raise up and go out of sight, with the ship on it.

"Well... there goes that plan.", I heard one of them remark. "How did she know?"

"You've read the target profile. She's good at hacking into systems undetected. Probably had a bug in place, to alert her to the kind of thing we've been doing.", another one said.

The man in the business suit interrupted the chatter.

"Stop chatting and get to the hangar! We can still catch that ship if we hurry and scan the wake. And I don't want to disappoint again."

I shadowed the group carefully as they left, avoiding to be seen by them, to make sure they all fell for the bait instead of leaving someone behind. And sure enough, all of them boarded an - otherwise inconspicuous - Anaconda.

With that matter sorted - if temporarily - I headed on up into the main body of the station, and reserved an empty room to pass the remainder of the night - if it even still was - in. I still felt tired, and I wanted somewhere that could be sealed off, to stay in for a few hours and lose the trail, with my ship off-station playing bait.

A few hours had turned into a day instead, hiding away in the basic living quarters. Today would likely be my last day at the station - mostly, due to more urgent matters requiring my attention elsewhere.

With that in mind, I got to typing up another message.

Hi Will

Not sure if you got my last message - you probably did, and are just busy, which is fine - but I just wanted to say I’ll have to leave today.

It’s for… important stuff. Things I can’t stay here for. About the Thargoids, and… well, some people tried to ‘find’ me like a day ago.

I’d like to explain. Talk, just you and me, if that’s fine with you. I’ll be at the bar until tonight, if you get a chance to drop by. If not, maybe call?

- Kira

I sent it off, not entirely without a doubt if I’d said something wrong in my previous message, as I left the room and freed it up.

While making my way over to the bar, I also had a Federal Corvette, as well as a fuel scoop and FSD booster be sent on their way to the port.
03 Jun 2023, 4:44pm
Arriving at the hangar, Memento Mori is seen sporting a badly peeling white paint job Elite xenobiology and exploration logos can be seen on the body. The name Longshot can be seen faintly through the paint as if the ship had just been recently renamed.

As I approach the boarding ramp a small fox like creature emerges from inside the ship and sits at the top of the ramp. It tilts it's head at me and the new person a strange intelligent curiosity in its gaze. It starts to do a happy feet tap as I approach.

'Hello Melli. Verity please allow access to commander......... uhm wait.. I don't actually know your name.'

I turn to Kira realizing she had never even told me who she was.

I thought about which name to provide for a second, between my pseudonym and real name. I chose the former.

“Kasumi. Kasumi Goto. Not my real name - you can probably guess why - but it’ll do. I use it as a pseudonym.”

I looked at the little pet.

“Where’d you get this little guy from?”
