Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

'Hmm ok. Allow access to commander Goto.'

I call over to Verity once more. There is a brief pause the a response.

'Greetings Commander Goto. General access granted.'

I reach down and pick Melli up as she lets out some excited chatter.

'Melli here was a gift from an old research partner. She is sweet as honey hence her full name Melitta, meaning sweet, or bee, or honey. Depends on who you ask. She is a similar creature to earth's foxes. She was found on an earth like world near Hawkings Gap.'

I let the creature down as I retract the boarding ramp and secure the ship. She runs around our feet then disappears into the depths of the ship.

'This way to the lounge. Please excuse the silicate dust everywhere. I..... well.... I left the doors open during a dust storm and I just haven't been able to get the fine silt out.'

We approach the lounge and I open the door. As the door slides out of the way it's as if the door was a portal to a completely different ship. The interior is pristine. No dirt anywhere, and the decor is of high imperial and wealthy federation origin. On the back wall are Royal Blue Calla Lily perfect preserved in acrylic, blue, purple and gold can be seen almost as if to represent a galactic nebula. A small bar is seen on the right side of the room.

Melli enters from a small animal door to the left and jumps up onto a lounge sofa. She runs spins in a circle and curls up into a ball watching the stranger with curious eyes.

'Now please Mrs Goto make yourself comfortable.'
03 Jun 2023, 5:33pm
“Don’t worry about the dirt. I wouldn’t expect an exploration ship to look particularly clean. Haven’t even bothered to get the paintjob fixed up on mine ever since I first took it out for a long trip.”

I looked around the pristine room, not finding it too comforting. It seemed almost too luxurious, as I settled down a certain distance away from the animal. If it had any interest in me, it’d come closer on its own.

“Also, please just call me by my first name. I’m not very… big on formalities, let’s say. And this definitely isn’t a formal meeting.”

I looked around again.

“Can I take my hood off here, or are the ship’s cameras connected to station security?”
03 Jun 2023, 6:35pm
'My ship is self contained. If that is what you are asking. I have my camera suite but it is heavily encrypted. Something Venus ensured when she gifted me the ship. Being a royal Imperial she preferred privacy.'

I look around at the room seeing Kira tense up. I let a smile slip.

'It's quite alright. I hate the way it's decorated but it reminds me of home....... I haven't been home in...... bah doesn't matter. So Kasumi... *I mouth the name a few times not quite sure it's origin* how did you escape the labs?'

Melli perks up at the mention of labs and lets out a growl.

'No you are not going to one Melli. Our guest here.... is from a lab if I'm not mistaken. You two might get along better than you think.'

She lets out some form of chatter as if in some form of disagreement. Melli cautiously approaches Kira and gives a sniff to investigate. She looks up at Kira her ice blue eyes seemingly attempting to decifer emotion.
03 Jun 2023, 6:49pm
“I kind of did… but also didn’t? It’s hard to explain.”

I gathered myself to deliver it.

“So, it’s like, apparently some guy from Azimuth thought I was an interesting test subject like, three years ago. Just after becoming a pilot. I don’t remember any of it because I wasn’t conscious, only found logs when one of them led me there… when was it, February? March, maybe. Don’t quite recall.”

“Anyway, it seems like they were still trying to restart that dumb Project Seraph thing, but still didn’t have any ships to do it with. Pulled me away when I was due for some medical exam. Whatever happened exactly, it was shut down a few days after I… ‘arrived’, and they put a bunch of stuff in me in preparation. Then they sent me back to the Pilot’s Federation District with a fake accident report…”

I took a moment to breathe.

“Not without a ‘gift’, of course. Some kind of mind control chip, instead of the implant I was supposed to get. Can’t say why I was thrown back out - maybe to not bother having to keep me alive and contained - but they obviously had some kind of alternative plan.”

I decided to stop there for now, and wait for Silvia’s initial opinions.
03 Jun 2023, 8:11pm
'So you mean to tell me you have a chip inside your head?'

Melli tilts her head at that statement and stares. She chatters again unsure of if it means what she thinks.

'I am not sure it that's the case Melli. So like this implant is it only for controlling you? Seems pretty messed up. Like does it have benefits outside of mind control like can it link to other implants?'

I genuinely interested in the chip in Kira's head and the researcher side of me is curious to see how it works. I pause and watch as Melli chatters a few things seemingly as though trying to communicate with Kira. I let out a small laugh.

'Melli that's quite enough.'

She stops chattering almost immediately and curls up into a small ball on Kira's lap.
03 Jun 2023, 8:33pm
I looked at the bundle of fur that had made its temporary home on my legs, and sighed.

"I knew this was coming."

I placed my hands elsewhere, and looked back at Silvia.

"Well, see, wasn't quite done with my story. Doesn't end there. The mind control implant is gone - if it wasn't, well, let's just say I wouldn't be here to tell about it. So you know that whole thing with the Proteus Wave where Azimuth tried to get rid of the Thargoids... well, here's what I think happened."

I caught my breath.

"They shut down the project where I was, and sent me on my way while they started preparing for that. Like, in an evil genius kind of way, the whole thing was planned out. The little chip in my head triggered when the Proteus Wave project was in its last phase, just before it fired, so I was there when it did. Suppose the plan was to leave me unsuspecting of anything until they could play me right into their hands, with as many Thargoids ships to run experiments as they desired."

"But as you also know, that didn't quite... work out. So I was stuck in a dead ship surrounded by Thargoids, but they don't destroy me. Last thing I can actively remember is... well, like a bright light enveloping the ship and it getting knocked around, then I passed out. And now... you're probably figuring out where this is going, but they did something to me there."

I had to pause for a second.

"I'm not really sure what. Or why. Can't say I remember, probably for the better. You remember what I told you about my own memories going amiss? Well, turns out, those asshats over at Azimuth put a failsafe into their mind control thingy that would effectively kill me, if anyone other than them tried to remove it. So you can imagine what the Thargoids pulled out of my head."

"Now... well, not only am I stuck with some weird implant like Seo's in my head, but my entire nervous system has basically had to be replaced with whatever the Thargoids stuffed into my body. And other implants around vital organs, to allow the signals to be received. In other words, if you try to pull any of it out, I'd... probably die. My brain sure doesn't look like it'd work enough to go without the cortical implant, anyway."

I felt tempted to pet the cute ball of fur on my legs, but threw a questioning look to Silvia first, to see if I could.
03 Jun 2023, 9:38pm
I shrug at the look and pinch the bridge of my nose trying to wrap my head around all of this.

'So you have this chip but like it's inactive then the Thargoids experimented on you. Look Melli wants to know... can you communicate with other creatures with implants?'

The last sentence kind of spills out of my mouth before I even have a chance to prevent them from coming out.

'Shit, sorry Melli. Ok look when we were in the bar and we said effectively the same thing I.... I thought... gah forget it.'

Why Silvia sad? Melli is ok.

The little fox chatters again and this time I just sit there staring at Kira.

'You have something that nobody understands and I have something of my own design that is highly experimental and some would consider blasphemous.'

I turn to face the bar I was leaning against and grab some of the liquids.

'Forgive me for being a poor host. What would you like to drink? Oh and Melli is ok with being pet. She finds it relaxing.'
03 Jun 2023, 9:57pm
"Drink? Thanks, I'm fine. You probably don't remember it, but no alcoholic beverages for me."

I started to run my right hand over the fox-like creature slowly, primarily over the back.

"As to your question - what I've got in my head isn't the mind control chip. It's gone, like gone gone. Not there. Replaced by some kind of Thargoid tech-based cortical implant, and, well... let's just say, what it connects to isn't something in another person's head. Or that of an animal, for that matter."

I paused for a second to think.

"Well, uh, what I mean is, this thing kinda hooks me up to their hive mind. Wish I could say I understand, but it's as much of a mystery to me as it is to the people I've had look at it. They were from Aegis, mind you - wouldn't have trusted anyone else to. They made things a little better, and easier to bear, but... not much else I can say to it, right now. Other than that I've constantly got this noise in my head like... hard to describe. Like bees buzzing around? Sometimes quieter, sometimes louder, but I can't just shut it off at will."

I sighed, and stopped petting.

"It's mostly just tiring. Takes a lot of energy away. Well, and the occasional headache. Was a lot worse in the first few months until I got some help - phantom pain from when I was basically electrocuted from the inside. I lived off a lot of painkillers during that period."

Saying it like that sounded a little funny, making me chuckle lightly.

"I don't have that now, though. Still isn't easy, but... I try to make it work. And not get stuck up on negative thoughts... too much, at least. Guess you have to take what you can when your choice is between death and living with a hive mind in your head. Ignoring that I didn't really get a choice because I was basically dead until this stuff got put in me, but you know."
03 Jun 2023, 10:09pm
'Right....... so what you're part thargoid then?'

mmm bugs. Maybe Melli take a bite.

'No Melli. Like what the hell did you get yourself into? Whatever it was or is can't be good. I don't necessarily trust those groups. Hmmm how's your strength? Or better yet reflexes?'

I toss a glass towards Kira in an attempt to see if the implant was a performance augment as well as a connection to the hive.
03 Jun 2023, 10:14pm
“Part Thargoid? If I could say…”

I saw the glass coming toward me and fished it out of the air.

“I’m not sure it comes with better reflexes, but I kinda might have snapped a scavenger’s neck once when they pissed me off a little too much. I’d rather not demonstrate it on anything in your ship, though.”

I decided to pull off my hood for the time being, at least until I left the ship, and tidied up the hair that got ruffled up by the motion.

“Are you like, talking to your pet?”
03 Jun 2023, 10:21pm
'Uhm..... you could say that. Again 100% experimental and not readily available as of yet. Melli is well kind of a test subject that is surprisingly intelligent.'

The little fox like creature lifts its head letting out a little yawn. She looks up at Kira and almost appears to nod as if in agreement.

'Look I know it's crazy. But I mean have you heard your story? I.... hmm..... dunno.... I guess like there are soo many things we could do if we could talk to everything
03 Jun 2023, 10:24pm
“All I can really say is, I’m not really clever enough to make a chip that’d let me ‘talk’ to a pet and actually understand what it’s saying. Or thinking. Well, and that implant in my head also didn’t exactly come with instructions on ‘How to Thargoid’.”

I thought about the idea for a moment.

“Wouldn’t the world become a lot more boring if we could just understand everything about it?”
03 Jun 2023, 10:35pm
'It's a language chip that was reprogrammed sort of. But it requires two in order to work properly. Like you hear chattering and general animal noises well I do too but I can understand what they mean..... Melli hears us speaking normally but understands the language in her way. She speaks very simply....'

Not Simple

I pour a drink for myself and a cup of juice for Kira. I walk over to where Kira is sitting and take a seat across from her. Melli jumps out of her lap and lays over my shoulders.

'I only understand Melli. I haven't been able to recreate the tech since.'

I take a sip of my drink and continue after passing Kira the glass of red liquid.

'Not poisoned or alcohol just simply juice. It's a matter of time before the implant or whatever you have begins to make sense if at all. *sigh* There is just not enough know about the thargoids and why they wiped out the guardians. We understand guardian tech and language better than we do the Goids. Shoot I'm pretty sure if we studied them closer we could figure them out but..... you know.... we just kill anything not human.'

"Well, I can kind of make sense of some things a little. Like the lights that their big ships give off, and one or two sounds, but it feels like they're pretty easily understood even without that."

I spun the glass of juice in my hand lightly, making sure not to spill anything, then downed half of it.

"You know, the Guardians weren't actually exterminated by the Thargoids, though. They retreated from that war after the Guardians beat them back using sentient AI constructs. Those same constructs then wiped them out after a civil war wrecked their society. Well, some of it, at least. Enough survived for us to have some information to piece together. Hell, I keep wondering if there isn't a repository of Thargoid language hidden away somewhere in those databanks."

"So anyway, I think a lesson is also to be drawn from what happened to the Guardians. Like, the way they treated the AI they made, it's actually not that surprising what happened, terrible as it may be. They saw them as tools, for the most part, not actual living, thinking beings. Didn't even see the betrayal coming - but when you treat something sentient like that, you should. And you shouldn't treat them as tools, but equals, if they come to you with questions."

I sipped at the juice again.

"One thing I'm most afraid of is those things returning. They wiped the Guardians out for their war-like nature, and then disappeared. If they show up again and see how humans are... well, we might just remind them of their creators too much. I think we have a chance of talking with the Thargoids, but those things? I'm not sure."

I began to think about going back up to the bar to see if anyone'd showed up there since, and my mind jumped to Willow again. Mostly, in thinking that I was somewhat glad she wasn't there, at least when I was, purely for avoiding any awkward situations coming up. Despite that, I decided to suggest it.

"Say, what do you think about heading back to the bar after you finish your drink? Maybe someone else's showed up there since. But if we do, no talk about that Thargoid stuff in me. Azimuth's pretty aware of it, and well, I don't want to give them any targets. Neither you, nor me."
03 Jun 2023, 10:58pm
'Don't mention my crazy tech and I'll speak nothing of yours. It would be dangerous in the wrong hands. Seems you needed to tell someone this that would actually listen. Let me get cleaned up first. As much as I love my Artemis suit I feel like it's a bit restricting.'

I stand from my seat offering to take the glass from Kira. I step out of the lounge and head towards my quarters to clean up and change into something more comfortable.

I return a little while later wearing a flowing sundress and knee high black boots. My hair is pulled styled up and I have a bit of makeup on. I escort Kira off the ship and head to the bar.

Melli go this time?

'Sure Melli you can come. Verity secure the ship no one allowed onboard unless they are with me. Come lets head back. Don't know if I'd recognize anyone there if they did show up.'
