Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

JB lifted Effie and threw her down onto the mattress, quickly trying to shed clothes. Admittedly, it was a lot less seductive than how Effie had gone about it.

The bruises on his body had either gone down or were hidden by the scars and tattoos that covered his body... which was good... he didn't want to ruin the moment by having to explain how he'd gained them, although it seemed as though they'd both been through the wars recently.

JB flashed Effie a grin and a wink... it was a tough life out there in the black, you've got to enjoy the good times when you can.
04 Feb 2021, 1:32pm
Effie was engulfed, physically by his strength and mentally, by her own thoughts. It wasn’t often that she actually felt like giving herself up so readily to anyone. Not since...

She had to deliberately force out the thoughts of Miles that suddenly came surging into her mind as JB pressed upon and into her body. She lay beneath him as he tensed his body and gasped, wrapping her arms and her legs around him tightly as he released.

Effie feared that her soul and her heart were still inseparable from her dear, deceased fiancé, Miles. Would she ever be able to love another?

“JB is so different to Miles”, she thought to herself as she lay there exhausted, but she was genuinely intrigued by him and her thoughts, ever since they first met, struggled not to constantly be drawn back to him. She wanted to see where this could go, but was afraid JB may not feel the same way and she was fiercely invested in not letting herself get hurt again.

She sat up in bed suddenly as if shocked, but then a moment later, without saying a word, she turned back toward him and smiled. She leant over and kissed his chest. Putting all her feelings back into their box, She asked, “Do you have any eggs? I could murder some eggs!”

She stood up and headed to the en-suite, picking up her discarded clothes along the way.

"Eggs? No," JB shouted through the door. "There's egg-white pods in the bar for whiskey sours but I don't think there's any food onboard." There was some olives and cherries but it was unlikely she was planning on cooking herself something from cocktail garnishes.

JB got up and walked over to the bar and took a couple of cold beers from the fridge. He popped the cap off one, took a deep swig then ran the bottle across his forehead. Taking another swig, he got into bed and put the other bottle on to the bedside table.

Effie had called out another guy's name earlier. "Miles". JB figured it was the guy she'd talked about briefly once, the guy she lost, before clamming up. He didn't want to press her about it back then and he wasn't the jealous type to get bent up about it now.

JB knew how short life could be... the trick was to make the most of it whilst you can. He felt bad that he was still so obviously on her mind... or maybe he was just lucky that he'd stopped getting attached to people a long way back.

JB picked his Comms Device up off the floor and read the message from Batu... once he'd finished things up here he'd sort out a meet-up with him. One of the gang from back home was already on his way in a T7 to take some cargo off his hands.

JB dropped the device back onto the floor and waited for Effie to leave the en-suite.
04 Feb 2021, 11:58pm
“Beer it is then!” Effie laughed as she left the small bathroom and slid back into bed, “But it’ll be my place next time, or a Hotel Suite, JB. Sex makes me ravenous! You must have some nuts in here somewhere at least!” She smiled at him. He was such a bloke! “Sod all in the fridge except for beer!” She said as she rolled her eyes at him jokingly.

“How long are you on Station for?” She asked, suspecting he wouldn’t be on hand for too long. She wanted to make the most of whatever time they would have together, before the Rocinante was repaired and she would leave. She wanted to get back out there as soon as possible, to try and pick up on the location of the two ships that had tried to take her out!

“I know that every trip could be the the last trip, JB, for anyone in our line of, work and I don’t want you to get the wrong idea or anything, but I do enjoy your company when we both happen to be in the same place at the same time”. She leant over the side of the bed and reached into her bag. She pulled something rather heavy out of it and passed it to him.

“I thought you may enjoy this” she said as she handed him a rare, leather bound copy of Robinson Crusoe. “It’s a First Edition. As you can see, it credits Robinson Crusoe himself as being the Author! It’s obviously quite rare and was given to me by someone very dear, but it needs a new home and I know you enjoy this stuff, so thought you might appreciate it in your Library.” She hadn’t known for certain, when she originally thought of the idea, if she would be able to actually part with the book. It was the only thing she had left in her possession that Miles had ever given her.

She smiled at JB and she knew right there and then that passing along this treasure felt right, that she had at last turned a corner. Finally she was ready to move on and put her past behind her.

She lay her head on his chest and wrapped her leg over his waist and with a hand gently caressing his chest, she whispered, “turn out the light”...

JB was a little stunned when Effie passed him the book. He had a lot of books, all counterfeits of course, but this one was a beauty. Even if it had been moody then this level of reproduction would still be very expensive.

He'd been given a copy of Crusoe to read before, a cheap rip-off that he had lost track of. He'd been told how the story showed that even a bad guy could make sacrifices and become the hero... JB always felt that the moral was that a man could be happy on his own until other people get involved. He hoped that Effie saw the former in him.

Or maybe he was reading too much into it.

JB's initial thought was to politely decline the book. It was obviously far too expensive a gift... but JB's recent history as a negotiator for his organisation had taught him the importance of gifts. Not the receiving... the gesture of giving something is more important to the giver than it is to the recipient.

Very carefully, JB placed the book on bedside table.

"Thank you, Red. I've got an apartment back at Grandma's House... I'll keep it safe there with my favourites." With that he leant over and gently kissed Effie.

Raising his hand to the dimmer above the bed, he let the room fade to black.

Effie woke. JB's arm was draped across her waist. Boy could this guy snore! She smiled as she lay there warm in his arms. "Time to go" she thought and she gently moved his arm to the side and rolled out of bed, not wishing to wake him.

As her eyes grew accustomed to the darkened room, she quietly slipped into her dress, tied back her hair loosely, picked up her shoes and bag and tip toed toward the door. As the Cabin door slid open and the faint light welled in from the corridor, she turned to look at him lying there, looking as peaceful as a baby and she felt a feeling of calm wellness wash over her.

Before entering the airlock to exit the Cuckoo, she took her pad of scented paper and a pen from her bag (Effie always felt that there's nothing quite like a hand written letter for the most personal of notes in these days of whizz bang holo memo's and instamail) and leaning against the ship's counter she wrote:

"Last night was wonderful, hun. Let's do it again soon. I wish I could have stayed longer (a stocked fridge could have swung it!), but I have to hit the black before the trail gets cold. Please don't be a stranger. You know how to reach me."

She signed the letter, "All Yours Babooshka"

The sound of the ramp to The Cuckoo lowering was enough to wake JB. The gentle clunk of the ramp closing back into place roused him further.

He was slightly disoriented from waking up in the passenger cabin instead of his crew bunkroom. He scratched his chest with his cybernetic left hand and ran his "good hand" along the bed next to him, Effie had gone. As he couldn't hear the shower in the en-suite he had to assume it was her leaving down the ramp.

JB turned the lights on and sat up on the edge of the bed. He finished off his bottle of beer and put the empty bottle back on the table.

Panza can clear that up when he gets back.

JB reached into the pocket of his black cargo trousers, that lay discarded on the floor, and took out the painkillers inside. He threw a couple back and washed them down with the last bit of beer in Effie's bottle.

With a groan, JB stretched and got up off the bed. He strode into the en-suite and looked at himself in the mirror.

As he stared back at himself he saw teeth marks on his shoulder and ran his fingers over the small, rising welts. He gave off a little chuckle... she obviously wanted to give him more than just the Robinson Crusoe as a momento.

It does seem to be a bit unsettling when one discovers things about themselves they really knew, but did not know.

I had always messed around with writing, but it was not my education nor profession so it was just a pass time hobby of sorts when I was bored.

I finally had some down time after some squadron stuff and went about checking all my boats, and as was going through my inspection of the MK2 and someone had left the book reader open.

I was not going to pay any attention for just a second... "Wait, what book is that?"  Then it hit me, JB was the last passenger on this tub and this particular choice of history to read stunned me a bit.  'Seven Pillars of Wisdom' was not a book I had expected to see pulled up.  A man reads this type of literature only if he really on his inside has culture and logic.  That would not be the outward glance at JB.

I may have to refine my thoughts about some things.

Time to settle in, get some sleeps and hit the mission givers up tomorrow.

An Alliance Crusader slowly pulls through the mail slot and makes it's way towards a landing pad, gently touching down and engaging it's docking clamps. On the side of the ship the name "SAPC Sea's Greetings" is visible alongside markings which clearly denote the ship as being a vessel of the Alliance.

The ship's boarding ramp descends and from within the ship two armored figures emerge and take up postions in front of the ramp, their bored expressions belying their watchful eyes scanning the dock. Assault weapons casually held with barrels pointing at the floor. From behind them another figure emerged from within the ship and looked around a few moments, his uniform and rank insignia marked him out as a Commodre in the Alliance Defence Forces, he scratched his red haired beard for a moment before his blue eyes identified the correct exit ramp.

It had been a while since McLaughlin had been to Citi Gateway.

One of the armored figures addressed the officer without turning his head towards him, his eyes still scanning their surroundings, "The embassy has been notified of our arrival and are waiting for us now Sir." The man's face was obscured by his fully enclosed helmet but the man was familiar to McLaughlin all the same. "Let's get a move on then Hada, as far as I can remember the embassy is that way."

With that Gerry began walking in the direction of the government section of the station where the embassies of the various groups represented in the INARA system were held. The two armored figures walking along with him, one of them walking slightly ahead of him and the other trailing along at the back of the group.

JB, beer in hand, left Cabin 3 aboard The Cuckoo to take the copy of Robinson Crusoe to his private bunkroom. On his way he noticed the note that Effie left for him...

Effie Trinket
"Last night was wonderful, hun. Let's do it again soon. I wish I could have stayed longer (a stocked fridge could have swung it!), but I have to hit the black before the trail gets cold. Please don't be a stranger. You know how to reach me."

She signed the letter, "All Yours Babooshka"

He held the scented note to his nose for a while... all the artificial air he was used to breathing in deadened most people's sense of smell so he made the most of something that reminded him of Effie's scent. He slipped the note into his back pocket and walked along the corridor to his quarters.

JB was pretty well connected and thought that he could've helped Effie if she'd asked... then reminded himself again that she wasn't a maiden in need of rescuing... it wasn't his job to be the white knight every time and that the universe would roll happily along without him flying in to save the day.

JB took another big swig of his beer and entered his cabin, relaxing before he had to go out and try and drum up business.

Edmund had been working away at his terminal in the embassy lobby when he felt a hand on his shoulder, he gave a small start when he turned around to find one of the Legionnaires staring down at him, the shorter of the two, her voice through aided by the helmet's in built speaker. "We need you to deliver a message to one of the ships docked in the starport."

Of course Edmund had been only too happy to be of "Service to the Alliance" as the Legionnaire had put it. He made his way through the docking bay and followed the precise directions he had been given until he found himself outside the Pilot's Lounge in the docking bay.

The landing pad itself was restricted to those were not registered as crew or as Station Authorities, "why couldn't they have just contacted the pilot's lounge from the embassy? Why'd I have to come all the way here?" With these thoughts in mind Edmund walked up to the reception desk in the lounge, an older woman with world weary eyes looked up at him as he approached.

She sighed before putting on a smile, "Hello, how can I help you Sir?" Edmund silently hoped he wouldn't look that listless 30 years from now as he introduced himself, "Hello, my name is Edmund Wade, I'm a... courier from the Alliance Embassy, I'm here to deliver a summons to a pilot." The woman started typing at her terminal, "Alright, what's his name?" Edmund consulted his tablet, terrified at the thought of screwing up and giving the wrong name.

"JB Threepwood, Captain of The Cuckoo."

The woman yawned, consulting some details and after verifying Edmund's identity, she directed him towards a terminal on the other side of the lounge, "Type your message into that terminal and hit send, it'll send it to his Ship's Bulletin Board." Edmund thanked the woman and made his way to the terminal, taking out his own data slate and typing in the message he had been told to send, being very careful to ensure he sent it exactly as instructed.

Edmund hit send and began making his way back to the Embassy, hoping that by the time he returned the Commodre and his Legionnaires would be gone. He was not optimistic.

"Sylvia! what the hell just happened? We crash translated? Turn those damn alarms off!"

"Skipper, getting ready to come into gateway and well, not sure what happened, gravity well over load or something locked us, only way out was to translate down."

Alright I told myself... calm the hell down. "Damages?"

"Minor skip, amfu will pick it up."

hmm ok, calmer now for a cup of coffee, hate waking up this way.

"Sylvia, get us docked, get a maintenance team on the gift, and try not to hit the docking rails on the way in please..."

"Uh yes Skip"

The small screen in his bunkroom beeped as a message flashed up. JB leant over and tapped the screen to open the message.

He remembered doing some work recently in Udegoci... some douchebag suits from Crimson Universal... though, to be fair, he remembered the he and the rest of the convoy had a two day bender in Kroehl before the flip-flop.

JB figured it couldn't hurt to check them out.

He pulled up the message screen again and tapped out a message to Batu;

[Small change of plans, brother, got to see a man about a dog over in the Commerce Division... let me know when you're free and I'll come meet you. JB]

JB picked up his beat-up brown leather jacket and got ready to leave his ship. He'd message his copilot Panza on the way.
